Abstract: In drinking water plants, accurate control of flocculation dosing not only improves the level of operation automation, thus reducing the chemical cost, but also strengthens the monitoring of pollutants in the whole water system. In this study, we used feedforward signal and feedback signal data to establish a back-propagation (BP) model for the prediction of flocculant dosing. We examined the effect of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and data type on the simulation performance of the model. The results showed that the parameters, such as the learning factor, population size, and number of generations, significantly affected the simulation. The best optimization conditions were attained at a learning factor of 1.4, population size of 20, 20 generations, 8 feedforward signals and 1 feedback signal as input data, 6 hidden layer nodes, and 1 output node. The coefficient of determination (R2) between the predicted and measured values was 0.68, and the root mean square error (RMSE) was lower than 20%, showing a good prediction result. Weak time-delay data enhanced the model accuracy, which increased the R2 to 0.73. Overall, with the hybridized data, PSO, and weak time-delay data, the new architecture neural network was able to predict flocculant dosing.

Abstract: We designed a tellurite microstructure fiber (TMF) and proposed a broadband optical frequency comb generation scheme that was based on electro-optical modulation and cascaded sign-alternated dispersion TMF (CSAD-TMF). In addition, the influence of different nonlinear effects, the ultrashort pulse evolution in the CSAD-TMF with the anomalous dispersion (AD) zones and the normal dispersion (ND) zones were analyzed based on the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations (GNLSE) modelling. According to the simulations, when the input seed comb had a repetition rate of 20 GHz and had an input pulse peak power of 30 W, the generation scheme could generate optical frequency combs with a 6 dB spectral bandwidth spanning over 170 nm centered at 1550 nm. Furthermore, the generated combs showed good coherence in performance over the whole 6 dB spectral bandwidth. The highly coherent optical frequency combs can be used as high-repetition-rate, multi-wavelength light sources for various integrated microwave photonics and ultrafast optical signal processing applications.

Abstract: Migratory birds spend several months in their breeding grounds in sympatry with local resident birds and relatively shorter periods of time at stopover sites. During migration, parasites may be transmitted between migratory and resident birds. However, to what extent they share these parasites remains unclear. In this study, we compared the assemblages of haemosporidian parasites in migratory, resident, and passing birds, as well as the correlations between parasite assemblages and host phylogeny. Compared with passing birds, migratory birds were more likely to share parasites with resident birds. Shared lineages showed significantly higher prevalence rates than other lineages, indicating that common parasites are more likely to spill over from the current host to other birds. For shared lineages, the prevalence was significantly higher in resident birds than in migratory birds, suggesting that migratory birds pick up parasites at their breeding ground. Among the shared lineages, almost two-thirds presented no phylogenetic signal in their prevalence, indicating that parasite transmission among host species is weakly or not correlated with host phylogeny. Moreover, similarities between parasite assemblages are not correlated with either migration status or the phylogeny of hosts. Our results show that the prevalence, rather than host phylogeny, plays a central role in parasite transmission between migratory and resident birds in breeding grounds.

Abstract: To address the challenges of poor fluidity and low uniformity in conventional sugarcane fertilizer applicators, a novel dual-directional spiral fertilizer applicator has been developed. The working principle of the applicator is explained, and, after analyzing the agronomic requirements for sugarcane, the parameter range for key components of the applicator is determined. The spiral blade’s diameter, pitch, and rotational velocity are chosen as the experimental factors, with the average fertilizer discharge uniformity as the evaluation criterion. Virtual simulation experiments are conducted using the discrete element method and a quadratic regression orthogonal rotating combined design. Regression models for the evaluation criterion and various experimental factors are obtained. Additionally, a dataset created from these experiments was then used to construct an artificial neural network (ANN) prediction model. Response surface methodology (RSM) and the ANN were both used to analyze and predict the outcomes. The results indicate that the artificial neural network outperforms response surface methodology in terms of better fitting capability and higher prediction accuracy. The determination coefficient, mean squared error, and root mean square error are 0.99629, 0.99163, 0.07763, 0.17498, 0.27862, and 0.41831, respectively. When comparing the two models, the optimal parameter combination is determined to be a diameter of 90.1669 mm, a pitch of 59.7407 mm, and a rotational speed of 53.8944 r/min, resulting in an average fertilizer discharge uniformity of 92.0670%. An experiment with these parameters confirmed the simulated findings, revealing a maximum discrepancy of 2.4%. This study offers valuable insights into optimizing spiral fertilizer applicators.

Abstract: Photocatalysis offers a sustainable approach for recalcitrant organic pollutants degradation, yet it is still challenging to seek robust photocatalysts for application purposes. Herein, a novel NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)/covalent triazine framework (CTF-1) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was rationally designed for antibiotics degradation under visible light irradiation. The NiFe-LDH/CTF-1 nanocomposites were readily obtained via in situ loading of NiFe-LDH on CTF-1 through covalent linking. The abundant coupling interfaces between two semiconductor counterparts lay the foundation for the formation of Z-scheme heterostructure, thereby effectively promoting the transfer of photogenerated electrons, inhibiting the recombination of carriers, as well as conferring the nanocomposites with stronger redox ability. Consequently, the optimal photocatalytic activity of the LDH/CTF heterojunction was significantly boosted for the degradation of a typical antibiotic, tetracycline (TC). Additionally, the photodegradation process and the mineralization of TC were further elucidated. These results envision that the LDH/CTF-1 can be a viable photocatalyst for long-term and sustainable wastewater treatment.

Abstract: Free enzymes often face economic problems due to their non-recyclability, which limits their applications for industrial manufacturing. Organic biopolymers are frequently used to fabricate hydrogel for enzyme immobilization due to their advantages of non-toxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and flexibility. However, for highly thermostable enzymes, simple cross-linking causes either low immobilizing efficiency or low thermal stability. Herein, we developed a novel enzyme immobilization strategy with two-step cross-linked gelatin hydrogel for thermostable enzymes working at high temperature. The hydrogel was firstly “soft cross-linked” to immobilize most enzyme molecules and then “hard cross-linked” to gain strong thermal stability. We selected the enzyme diacetylchitobiose deacetylase (Dac), which was firstly derived from hyperthermophilic bacteria, to demonstrate the advantages of our method. With the optimized fabrication steps, our hydrogel showed ~87% Dac immobilization efficiency and excellent stability against heating, dehydrating, long-time storing, and massive recycling. Importantly, our hydrogel showed ~85.0% relative enzyme activity at 80 °C and retained ~65.8% activity after 10 rounds of catalysis. This strategy showed high immobilizing efficiency and strong thermal stability and we believe it could improve the industrial potential for those enzymes.

Abstract: We design a novel slow-light silicon photonic crystal waveguide which can operate over an extremely wide flat band for ultrafast integrated nonlinear photonics. By conveniently adjusting the radii and positions of the second air-holes rows, a flat slow-light low-dispersion band of 50 nm is achieved numerically. Such a slow-light photonic crystal waveguide with large flat low-dispersion wideband will pave the way for governing the femtosecond pulses in integrated nonlinear photonic platforms based on CMOS technology.

Abstract: Efficient and accurate fault diagnosis plays an essential role in the safe operation of machinery. In respect of fault diagnosis, various data-driven methods based on deep learning have attracted widespread attention for research in recent years. Considering the limitations of feature representation in convolutional structures for fault diagnosis, and the demanding requirements on the quality of data for Transformer structures, an intelligent method of fault diagnosis is proposed in the present study for bearings, namely Efficient Convolutional Transformer (ECTN). Firstly, the time-frequency representation is achieved by means of short-time Fourier transform for the original signal. Secondly, the low-level local features are extracted using an efficient convolution module. Then, the global information is extracted through transformer. Finally, the results of fault diagnosis are obtained by the classifier. Moreover, experiments are conducted on two different bearing datasets to obtain the experimental results showing that the proposed method is effective in combining the advantages of CNN and transformer. In comparison with other single-structure methods of fault diagnosis, the method proposed in this study produces a better diagnostic performance in the context of limited data volume, strong noise, and variable operating conditions.

Abstract: Drug-delivery vehicles have garnered immense interest in recent years due to unparalleled progress made in material science and nanomedicine. However, the development of stimuli-responsive devices with controllable drug-release systems (DRSs) is still in its nascent stage. In this paper, we designed a two-way controlled drug-release system that can be promoted and prolonged, using the external stimulation of near-infrared light (NIR) and protein coating. A hierarchical nanostructure was fabricated using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)—mesoporous silica as the core-shell structure with protein lysozyme coating. The mesoporous silica shell provides abundant pores for the loading of drug molecules and a specific type of photosensitive molecules. The morphology and the physical properties of the nanostructures were thoroughly characterized. The results exhibited the uniform core-shell nanostructures of ~four UCNPs encapsulated in one mesoporous silica nanoparticle. The core-shell nanoparticles were in the spherical shape with an average size of 200 nm, average surface area of 446.54 m2/g, and pore size of 4.6 nm. Using doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapy agent as the drug model, we demonstrated that a novel DRS with capacity of smart modulation to promote or inhibit the drug release under NIR light and protein coating, respectively. Further, we demonstrated the therapeutic effect of the designed DRSs using breast cancer cells. The reported novel controlled DRS with dual functionality could have a promising potential for chemotherapy treatment of solid cancers.
