Abstract: The dynamics of cardiac signals can be studied using methods for nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). The methods that are used in the article to investigate the fractal, multifractal and informational characteristics of the intervals between heartbeats (RR time intervals) are: Rescaled Range, Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, Poincaré plot, Approximate Entropy and Sample Entropy. Two groups of people were studied: 25 healthy subjects (15 men, 10 women, mean age: 56.3 years) and 25 patients with arrhythmia (13 men, 12 women, mean age: 58.7 years). The results of the application of the methods for nonlinear analysis of HRV in the two groups of people studied are shown as mean ± std. The effectiveness of the methods was evaluated by t-test and the parameter Area Under the Curve (AUC) from the Receiver Operator Curve (ROC) characteristics. The studied 11 parameters have statistical significance (p 〈 0.05); therefore, they can be used to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy subjects. It was established by applying the ROC analysis that the parameters Hq=2(MFDFA), F(α)(MFDFA) and SD2(Poincaré plot) have a good diagnostic value; H(R/S), α1(DFA), SD1/SD2(Poincaré plot), ApEn and SampEn have a very good score; α2(DFA), αall(DFA) and SD1(Poincaré plot) have an excellent diagnostic score. In conclusion, the methods used for nonlinear analysis of HRV have been evaluated as effective, and with their help, new perspectives are opened in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract: The aim of present study was to obtain novel fibrous materials based on cellulose derivative and polyethylene glycol loaded with natural biologically active compound quercetin by electrospinning. Several methods including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), water contact angle measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and UV-VIS spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the obtained materials. The incorporation of polyethylene glycol in the fibrous material resulted in increased hydrophilicity and burst release of quercetin from the fibers. Quercetin-containing fibrous mats exhibited high antioxidant activity as estimated by DPPH free radical scavenging method. In vitro tests with HeLa tumor cells and SH-4 melanoma skin cells were performed in order to determine the cytotoxicity of the novel materials. It was found that the fibrous CA/PEG/QUE materials exhibited high cytotoxic effect against both cell lines. Therefore, the novel polymeric materials containing quercetin are promising candidates for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract: Innovative fibrous materials from cellulose derivative, cellulose acetate (CA) and water-soluble polyether, polyethylene glycol (PEG) loaded with natural biologically active compounds (BAC), quercetin (QUE) and rutin (RUT), have been successfully fabricated by blend electrospinning and dual electrospinning. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the mean fiber diameters of all the obtained fibers were in the nanometer range. QUE and RUT incorporated in the fibrous mats were in the amorphous state, as evidenced by the performed differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The presence of the polyether in the developed fibrous material assisted the in vitro release of the biologically active compounds by improving the hydrophilicity and wettability of the mats. Rutin-containing fibrous materials manifest the highest antioxidative activity, as determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate free radical method. The cytotoxicity of the fabricated novel materials was evaluated using a tumor cell line and normal mouse fibroblast cells. The mats containing QUE and QUE/RUT independent of the applied spinning method show a higher cytotoxic effect against cancer cells and 3 to 4.5 times lower cytotoxicity to a noncancer cell line. These features make the quercetin- and rutin-containing fibrous materials promising candidates for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and biomedical use.

Abstract: The “Multivariate Ring Learning with Errors” problem was presented as a generalization of Ring Learning with Errors (RLWE), introducing efficiency improvements with respect to the RLWE counterpart thanks to its multivariate structure. Nevertheless, the recent attack presented by Bootland, Castryck and Vercauteren has some important consequences on the security of the multivariate RLWE problem with “non-coprime” cyclotomics; this attack transforms instances of m-RLWE with power-of-two cyclotomic polynomials of degree n=∏ini into a set of RLWE samples with dimension maxi{ni}. This is especially devastating for low-degree cyclotomics (e.g., Φ4(x)=1+x2). In this work, we revisit the security of multivariate RLWE and propose new alternative instantiations of the problem that avoid the attack while still preserving the advantages of the multivariate structure, especially when using low-degree polynomials. Additionally, we show how to parameterize these instances in a secure and practical way, therefore enabling constructions and strategies based on m-RLWE that bring notable space and time efficiency improvements over current RLWE-based constructions.

Abstract: Electrospinning was used to create fibrous polylactide (PLA) materials loaded with Portulaca oleracea (P. oleracea) plant extract obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide. Morphological, physico-chemical, mechanical, and biological characteristics of the fibers were studied. According to the SEM results, the diameters of smooth and defect-free fibers fabricated by a one-pot electrospinning method were at micron scale. All the obtained materials possess good mechanical properties. Additionally, it was found that the composite fibers exhibited considerable antioxidant activity. The antimicrobial activity of the fibrous materials against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was determined as well. In vitro studies showed that the electrospun biomaterials had no cytotoxic effects and that the combination of PLA and the P. oleracea extract in the fiber structure promoted cell survival and proliferation of normal mouse fibroblasts. The obtained results reveal that microfibrous mats containing the polyester—PLA and the plant extract—P. oleracea can be suitable for applications in wound healing.

Abstract: A new type of fibrous mat based on a cellulose derivative—cellulose acetate (CA) or CA and water-soluble polymers (polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP or poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA)—loaded with the model drug 5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline (5N) was fabricated via electrospinning or electrospinning in conjunction with electrospraying. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle measurements and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) were used for the complex characterization of the obtained novel material. The decoration of CA fibers with a water-soluble polymer containing the drug resulted in the facilitation of wetting and fast drug release. The 5N-containing fibrous material showed antioxidant activity. Moreover, the proposed materials’ antibacterial and antifungal properties were tested against S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and C. albicans. Well-distinguished, sterile zones with diameters above 3.5 cm were observed around all 5N-containing mats. The mats’ cytotoxicity toward HeLa carcinoma cells and normal mouse BALB/c 3T3 fibroblasts was assessed. The 5N-in-CA, PVP,5N-on-(5N-in-CA) and PVA,5N-on-(5N-in-CA) fibrous mats possessed anticancer efficacies and much lower levels of toxicity against normal cells. Therefore, the as-created novel electrospun materials, which are based on polymers loaded with the drug 5N via electrospinning/electrospraying, can potentially be applied for topical wound healing and for local cancer therapy.

Abstract: Novel eco-friendly fibrous materials with complex activities from cellulose acetate and cellulose acetate/polyethylene glycol (CA,PEG) containing 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline as a model drug were obtained by electrospinning. Several methods, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, water contact angle measurements, and mechanical tests, were utilized to characterize the obtained materials. The incorporation of PEG into the fibers facilitated the drug release. The amounts of the released drug from CA/5-Cl8Q and CA,PEG/5-Cl8Q were 78 ± 3.38% and 86 ± 3.02%, respectively (for 175 min). The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the obtained materials were studied. The measured zones of inhibition of CA/5-Cl8Q and CA,PEG/5-Cl8Q mats were 4.0 ± 0.18 and 4.5 ± 0.2 cm against S. aureus and around 4.0 ± 0.15 and 4.1 ± 0.22 cm against E. coli, respectively. The complete inhibition of the C. albicans growth was detected. The cytotoxicity of the obtained mats was tested toward HeLa cancer cells, SH-4 melanoma skin cells, and mouse BALB/c 3T3 fibroblasts as well. The CA/5-Cl8Q and CA,PEG/5-Cl8Q materials exhibited anticancer activity and low normal cell toxicity. Thus, the obtained fibrous materials can be suitable candidates for wound dressing applications and for application in local cancer treatment.

Abstract: Mathematical models for describing the shape of eggs find application in various fields of practice. The article proposes a method and tools for a detailed study of the shape and peripheral contours of digital images of eggs that are suitable for grouping and sorting. A scheme has been adapted to determine the morphological characteristics of eggs, on the basis of which an algorithm has been created for obtaining their 3D models, based on data from color digital images. The deviation from the dimensions of the major and minor axes measured with a caliper and the proposed algorithm is 0.5–1.5 mm. A model of a correction factor has been established by which the three-dimensional shape of eggs can be determined with sufficient accuracy. The results obtained in this work improve the assumption that the use of algorithms to determine the shape of eggs strongly depends on those of the bird species studied. It is approved with data for Mallard eggs which have a more elliptical shape and correspondingly lower values of correction coefficient ‘c’ (c = 1.55–4.96). In sparrow (c = 9.55–11.19) and quail (c = 11.71–13.11) eggs, the form tends to be ovoid. After testing the obtained model for eggs from three bird species, sparrow, mallard, and quail, the coefficient of the determination of proposed model was R2 = 0.96. The standard error was SE = 0.08. All of the results show a p-value of the model less than α = 0.05. The proposed algorithm was applied to create 3D egg shapes that were not used in the previous calculations. The resulting error was up to 9%. This shows that in the test, the algorithm had an accuracy of 91%. An advantage of the algorithm proposed here is that the human operator does not need to select points in the image, as is the case with some of the algorithms developed by other authors. The proposed methods and tools for three-dimensional transformation of egg images would be applicable not only for the needs of poultry farming, but also in ornithological research when working with different shaped varieties of eggs. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has sufficient accuracy.
