    Abstract: Milling with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) is now a commonly used machining technique in industry. The application of the MQL significantly reduces the temperature on the machined surface, while the cost of the lubricants is limited and the pollution caused by the lubricants is better controlled. However, the fast prediction of the milling temperature during the process has not been well developed. This paper proposes an analytical model for milling temperature prediction at the workpiece flank surface with MQL application. Based on the modified orthogonal cutting model and boundary layer lubrication effect, the proposed model takes in the process parameters and can generate the temperature profile at the workpiece surface within 1 min. The model is validated with experimental data in milling AISI D2 steel. With an average absolute error of 10.38%, the proposed model provides a reasonable temperature prediction compared to the experimental results. Based on the proposed model, this paper also investigates the effect of different cutting parameters on the cutting temperature. It is found that the application of the MQL decreases the temperature at the cutting zone, especially at the flank surface of the workpiece, which is due to the heat loss led by air-oil flow.

    Abstract: Pim-2 kinase is overexpressed in multiple myeloma (MM) and is associated with poor prognosis in patients with MM. Changes in quantitative metabolism, glycolysis, and oxidative phosphorylation pathways are reportedly markers of all tumor cells. However, the relationship between Pim-2 and glycolysis in MM cells remains unclear. In the present study, we explored the relationship between Pim-2 and glycolysis. We found that Pim-2 inhibitors inhibited glycolysis and energy production in MM cells. Inhibition of Pim-2 decreased the proliferation of MM tumor cells and increased their susceptibility to apoptosis. Our data suggest that reduced Pim-2 expression inhibits the energy metabolism process in MM, thereby inhibiting tumor progression. Hence, Pim-2 is a potential metabolic target for MM treatment.

    Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease of synovial inflammation that affects populations worldwide. Transdermal drug delivery systems for treating RA have increased but remain challenging. We fabricated a dissolving microneedle (MN) system with photothermal (PT) polydopamine (PDA) to co-load the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug loxoprofen (Lox) and the Janus kinase inhibitor tofacitinib (Tof), with the aim of co-delivering Lox and Tof directly to the articular cavity, aided by the combination of MN and PT. In vitro and in vivo permeation studies showed that the PT MN significantly promoted drug permeation and retention in the skin. An in vivo visualization of the drug distribution in the articular cavity showed that the PT MN significantly promoted drug retention in the articular cavity. Importantly, compared to the intra-articular injection of Lox and Tof, the application of the PT MN to a carrageenan/kaolin-induced arthritis rat model exhibited superior performance in reducing joint swelling, muscle atrophy, and cartilage destruction. Furthermore, the PT MN downregulated the mRNA expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1β, iNOS, JAK2, JAK3, and STAT3. The results show that the PT MN transdermal co-delivery of Lox and Tof is a new synergetic therapy with high compliance and good therapeutic efficacy for RA.

    Abstract: Landslides are one of the major geohazards threatening human society. The objective of this study was to conduct a landslide hazard susceptibility assessment for Ruijin, Jiangxi, China, and to provide technical support to the local government for implementing disaster reduction and prevention measures. Machine learning approaches, e.g., random forests (RFs) and support vector machines (SVMs) were employed and multiple geo-environmental factors such as land cover, NDVI, landform, rainfall, lithology, and proximity to faults, roads, and rivers, etc., were utilized to achieve our purposes. For categorical factors, three processing approaches were proposed: simple numerical labeling (SNL), weight assignment (WA)-based and frequency ratio (FR)-based. Then 19 geo-environmental factors were respectively converted into raster to constitute three 19-band datasets, i.e., DS1, DS2, and DS3 from three different processes. Then, 155 observed landslides that occurred in the past decades were vectorized, among which 70% were randomly selected to compose a training set (TS1) and the remaining 30% to form a validation set (VS1). A number of non-landslide (no-risk) samples distributed in the whole study area were identified in low slope ( 〈 1–3°) zones such as urban areas and croplands, and also added to the TS1 and VS1 in the same ratio. For comparison, we used the FR approach to identify the no-risk samples in both flat and non-flat areas, and merged them into the field-observed landslides to constitute another pair of training and validation sets (TS2 and VS2) using the same ratio of 7:3. The RF algorithm was applied to model the probability of the landslide occurrence using DS1, DS2, and DS3 as predictive variables and TS1 and TS2 for training to obtain the SNL-based, WA-based, and FR-based RF models, respectively. Verified against VS1 and VS2, the three models have similar overall accuracy (OA) and Kappa coefficient (KC), which are 89.61%, 91.47%, and 94.54%, and 0.7926, 0.8299, and 0.8908, respectively. All of them are much better than the three models obtained by SVM algorithm with OA of 81.79%, 82.86%, and 83%, and KC of 0.6337, 0.655, and 0.660. New case verification with the recent 26 landslide events of 2017–2020 revealed that the landslide susceptibility map from WA-based RF modeling was able to properly identify the high and very high susceptibility zones where 23 new landslides had occurred, and performed better than the SNL-based and FR-based RF modeling, though the latter has a slightly higher OA and KC. Hence, we concluded that all three RF models achieve reasonable risk prediction, but WA-based and FR-based RF modeling deserves a recommendation for application elsewhere. The results of this study may serve as reference for the local authorities in prevention and early warning of landslide hazards.

    Abstract: In the surface filtration process with pores larger than the particle size, the formation of particle bridges plays a crucial role in the filter cake structure and the filtration efficiency throughout the filtration process. First, to understand the microscopic information required for the bridging mechanism, we use the two-way coupling of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)–discrete element method (DEM) to simulate the deposition characteristics of particles in the pores of ceramic membranes. Next, by dynamically observing the deposition morphology and bridging process of particles, the bridging mechanism was revealed at the level of a single hole. Then, we studied the influence of particle concentration and inlet velocity on the bridge erection process. The results show that the bridging function of particles runs through the clean filtration stage and the transition stage. Particle concentration and inlet flow rate have a crucial influence on the formation of particle bridges and filtration efficiency.

    Abstract: A novel virus named SARS-CoV-2 has caused a worldwide pandemic, resulting in a disastrous impact to the public health since 2019. The disease is much more lethal among patients with malignant disease. Vaccination plays an important role in the prevention of infection and subsequent severe COVID-19. However, the efficacy and safety of vaccines for cancer patients needs further investigation. Encouragingly, there have been important findings deduced from research so far. In this review, an overview of the immunogenicity, effectiveness, and safeness of COVID-19 vaccines in patients with cancer to date is to be shown. We also highlight important questions to consider and directions that could be followed in future research.

    Abstract: The algorithm of the clustering-based decision tree, which is a methodology of multimodal fusion, has made many achievements in many fields. However, it is not common in the field of transportation, especially in the application of automobile navigation. Meanwhile, the concept of Spatio-temporal data is now widely used. Therefore, we proposed a vehicle routing Spatio-temporal selection system based on a clustering-based decision tree. By screening and clustering Spatio-temporal data, which is a collection of individual point data based on historical driving data, we can identify the routes and many other features. Through the decision tree modeling of the state information of Spatio-temporal data, which includes the features of the historical data and route selection, we can obtain an optimal result, that is, the route selection made by the system. Moreover, all the above calculations and operations are done on the edge, which is different from the vast majority of current cloud computing vehicle navigation. We have also experimented with our system using real vehicle data. The experiments show that it can output path decision results for a given situation, which takes little time and is the same as the approximated case of networked navigation. The experiments yielded satisfactory results. Our system could save a lot of cloud computing power, which might change the current navigation systems.

    Abstract: The climate oscillations of the quaternary periods have profoundly affected the geographic distributions of current species. Acer davidii is a deciduous forest tree species mainly distributed in East Asia and China, playing a dominant role in the local forest ecosystem. In order to study the potential changes of geographic distributions of A. davidii in climate fluctuations, we collected the relate geographical distribution data and six climatic variables, using maximum entropy modelling to determine the species distribution. The results showed that the Areas Under Curve (AUC) values of the working characteristic curves of the subjects in the five historical periods were all greater than 0.93, suggesting that the results of maximum entropy modelling were accurate. The simulation of species distribution showed that the suitable area of A. davidii was mainly concentrated in central and northern China in contemporary times. From the Last Interglacial Age (LIG) to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and then to the future (2050, 2070), the distribution area of this species experienced a decrease (LGM~Current; the high adaptability areas of central China became moderate) then an increase (Current~2050, the adaptation areas expanded to South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Siberia), and finally decreased (2050~2070, the suitable areas of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Siberia shrank returning to China at latitude 25 °N). Compared to the LGM, the area of contemporary suitable area increased. Interestingly, the area of suitable growth range under future climatic conditions (2050) increased by half than before, and the suitable distribution area moved from Midwest China to Northeast China. This study on the change of species distribution can provide a typical case for the model study on the response of plants to climate change in the north temperate and subtropical zones of East Asia. Meanwhile, it can also give a basis for planting planning, species protection, and management.

    Abstract: To quantitatively study the hydrodynamic changes in different river morphologies and clarify the impact of morphological changes on river ecosystems, this study examined a section of the Nansha River near Laoniuwan in the Haidian District, Beijing, and characterized different river morphologies by river sinuosity. The River 2D model was used for simulation and analysis, and the depth and velocity diversity indices were introduced to quantify the distribution of depth and velocity under different sinuosities. Cyprinus carpio was selected as the target fish in this study, and its suitability curve was determined using literature and field surveys. Combined with the simulation results, a weighted usable area curve was established to identify its inflection point and maximum value and determine the ecological flow in the river under different sinuosities, that is, to clarify the relationship between sinuosity and ecological flow. The results showed that the lower the sinuosity, the worse the depth and velocity diversity, but a greater sinuosity did not lead to better depth and velocity diversity. The depth and velocity diversity of a sinuosity of 1.5 were better than those of 1.89 in general, except for low flow conditions (Q = 5 m3/s). For rivers with water use restricted by nature and society and where ecological needs exist, ecological engineering that appropriately changes the planform of rivers can be considered to increase the diversity of river/channel geometry and provide a basis for the ecological restoration of rivers.

    Abstract: The first successful sand-control was achieved in the Mu Us Desert by local people in the 1950–1960s, and their experience and approach have been extended to the whole Ordos and Northern China since then. The objective of this paper is to assess comprehensively the effectiveness of sand-control in 15 counties in and around Mu Us using multitemporal satellite images and socioeconomic data. After atmospheric correction, Landsat TM and OLI images were harnessed for land cover classification based on the ground-truth data and for derivation of the GDVI (generalized difference vegetation index) to extract the biophysical changes of the managed desert and desertification. Climatic, socioeconomic, environmental and spatial factors were selected for coupling analysis by multiple linear and logistic regression models to reveal the driving forces of desertification and their spatial determinants. The results show that from 1991 to 2020, 8712 km2 or 63% of the desert has been converted into pastures and shrublands with a greenness increase of 0.3509 in GDVI; the effectiveness of sand-control is favored by the rational agropastoral activities and policies; though desertification occurs locally, it is associated with both climatic and socioeconomic factors, such as wind speed, precipitation, water availability, distance to roads and animal husbandry.
