Abstract: Red ginseng (RG), which is obtained from heated Panax ginseng and is produced by steaming followed by drying, is a valuable herb in Asian countries. Steamed ginseng dew (SGD) is a by-product produced in processing red ginseng. In the present study, phytochemical profiling of extracts of red ginseng and steamed ginseng dew was carried out using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and rapid resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RRLC-Q-TOF-MS) analysis. Additionally, antioxidant activities (DPPH, ·OH, and ABTS scavenging ability) and whitening activities (tyrosinase and elastase inhibitory activity) were analyzed. Phytochemical profiling revealed the presence of 66 and 28 compounds that were non-saponin components in chloroform extracts of red ginseng and steamed ginseng dew (RG-CE and SGD-CE), respectively. Meanwhile, there were 20 ginsenosides identified in n-butanol extracts of red ginseng and steamed ginseng dew (RG-NBE and SGD-NBE). By comparing the different polar extracts of red ginseng and steamed ginseng dew, it was found that the ethyl acetate extract of red ginseng (RG-EAE) had the best antioxidant capacity and whitening effect, the water extract of steamed ginseng dew (SGD-WE) had stronger antioxidant capacity, and the SGD-NBE and SGD-CE had a better whitening effect. This study shows that RG and SGD have tremendous potential to be used in the cosmetic industries.

Abstract: Crop resistance and biological control are both considered efficient and environmentally friendly methods of sustainable pest control. In this study, we aimed at investigating the direct influence of four wheat lines with varying resistance level on the life-history traits of the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum, and the mediational effect on the functional response of a predatory ladybird, Propylaea japonica, under laboratory conditions. Results showed that the aphid fitness was the lowest for aphids that had been feeding on wheat line ‘98-10-19’ for one year. These aphids had the longest development time, and least adult mass, minimal mean relative growth rate, and lowest reproductive fitness. In contrast, the aphids that fed on wheat line ‘98-10-30’ were the fittest, with the shortest development time and highest levels of reproductive fitness. The predatory activities of the ladybeetle, especially the adult male significantly decreased following the consumption of aphids belonging to the ‘98-10-19’-acclimated population. However, there were no significant differences in predatory efficiency (net attack frequency) among the four aphid acclimated populations. Our results showed that the wheat line ‘98-10-19’ has a relative higher resistance to S. graminum than the other three wheat lines, which could further decrease the amount of prey available for consumption. However, the ecological effect of the resistance of ‘98-10-19’ to S. graminum posed no negative influence on the biocontrol potential of P. japonica to these aphids, as their predatory efficiency increases at the fourth instar larvae phase.

Abstract: Based on previous studies about microflora regulation and immunity enhancement activities of polysaccharides from Codonopsis pilosula Nannf. var. modesta (Nannf.) L. T. Shen (CPP), there is little study on intestinal mucosal immunity, which is a possible medium for contacting microflora and immunity. In the present study, the BALB/c mice were divided into five groups (eight mice in each group), including a normal group (Con), a model control group (Model), and model groups that were administered CPP (50, 100, 200 mg/kg/d) orally each day for seven days after intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg BW/d cyclophosphamide (CP) for three days. CPP recovered the spleen index and restored the levels of IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-10, as well as serum IgG. In addition, it elevated ileum secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), the number of Lactobacillus and acetic acid content in cecum. These results indicated that CPP plays an important role in the protection against immunosuppression, especially mucosa immune damage, and the inhibition of pathogenic bacteria colonization, which could be considered a potential natural source of immunoregulator.

Abstract: Short videos are very popular among students, but the immersive nature of the software makes them prone to problematic use and even addiction. Internet addiction, including short-video problematic use, has been a hot topic in recent years due to the COVID-19 epidemic. However, there are few empirical studies that have explored the effects of short-video problematic use on students. Thus, vocational colleges in China were recruited to participate in this study. There were 1089 effective participants, with a valid recall rate of 90.8%. This included 466 male students (42.8%) and 623 female students (57.2%), with a mean age of 19.19 years (standard deviation of 1.07 years). Five hypotheses were proposed and validated by structural equation modeling within the framework of ecological systems theory and engagement theory to explore the association of short-video problematic use, three types of learning engagement, and perceived learning ineffectiveness. Research findings showed that: (1) short-video problematic use has a negative effect on behavioral engagement; (2) behavioral engagement has a positive effect on both emotional and cognitive engagement; and (3) emotional and cognitive engagement have a negative effect on perceived learning ineffectiveness. According to the results, it can be seen that short-video problematic use has a detrimental effect on students’ learning experiences, so teachers and parents need to pay attention to the negative effects of excessive use among students.

Abstract: Gear contact fatigue has becoming a bottleneck restricting the safety and reliability of wind turbine transmission systems. Tooth interior fatigue fracture (TIFF) failure is commonly observed in case-hardened wind turbine gears. In this work, a contact fatigue model is developed to investigate the effect of design parameters and material properties on TIFF of wind turbine gears. The sub-surface stress field is obtained by superposing the load-introduced stress and initial residual stress. The hardness gradient of the hardened layer is measured by Vickers hardness tests. Based upon the stress field and material properties, a fatigue parameter analysis is presented to characterize the risk of TIFF by using the Dang Van multiaxial fatigue criterion. Results show that the risk of TIFF increases with increasing external load. Increasing pressure angle and residual compressive stress could reduce TIFF risk. The combination of high surface hardness, low core hardness, and large effective case depth could inhibit the crack initiation.

Abstract: Lanthanum sulfadiazine (LaSD) was synthesized from sulfadiazine and lanthanum nitrate using water as solvent under alkaline conditions, and was used as a novel rare earth thermal stabilizer to stabilize poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The structure of LaSD was characterized by elemental analysis (EA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermo- gravimetric analysis (TGA). The influence of lanthanum sulfadiazine with calcium stearate (CaSt2) and epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) on stabilizing PVC was studied by using the Congo red test, oven discoloration test, UV-vis spectroscopy and thermal decomposition kinetics. The results showed that the addition of LaSD as a thermal stabilizer can significantly improve the initial whiteness and long-term stability of PVC. In addition, the synergies between LaSD, ESBO, and CaSt2 can provide outstanding improvement in the long-term thermal stability of PVC. When the ratio of LaSD/ESBO/CaSt2 is 1.8/0.6/0.6, its thermal stability time is 2193 s which is the best state for stabilizing PVC. Furthermore, comparing the reaction energy (Ea) and the variations in the conjugate double bond concentration in PVC samples, the order of thermal stability of PVC was PVC/LaSD/ESBO/CaSt2 〉 PVC/LaSD/ESBO 〉 PVC/LaSD. The thermal stability mechanism of LaSD on PVC was studied by the AgCl precipitation method and FTIR spectrum. The results showed that the action of LaSD on PVC was achieved through replacing unstable chlorine atoms and absorbing hydrogen chloride.

Abstract: Plant architecture improvement is of great significance in influencing crop yield, harvesting efficiency and ornamental value, by changing the spatial structure of the canopy. However, the mechanism on plant architecture in woody plants is still unclear. In order to study the genetic control of plant architecture traits and promote marker-assisted selection (MAS), a genetic linkage map was constructed, and QTL mapping was performed. In this study, using 188 BC2 progenies as materials, a genetic map of Lagerstroemia was constructed using amplification fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) and simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers, and the QTLs of four key plant architecture traits (plant height, crown width, primary lateral branch height and internode length) were analyzed. The genetic map contains 22 linkage groups, including 198 AFLP markers and 36 SSR markers. The total length of the genome covered by the map is 1272 cM, and the average distance between markers is 6.8 cM. Three QTLs related to plant height were located in LG1, LG4 and LG17 linkage groups, and the phenotypic variation rates were 32.36, 16.18 and 12.73%, respectively. A QTL related to crown width was located in LG1 linkage group, and the phenotypic variation rate was 18.07%. Two QTLs related to primary lateral branch height were located in the LG1 and LG7 linkage groups, and the phenotypic variation rates were 20.59 and 15.34%, respectively. Two QTLs related to internode length were located in the LG1 and LG20 linkage groups, and the phenotypic variation rates were 14.86 and 9.87%. The results provide a scientific basis for finely mapping genes of plant architecture traits and marker-assisted breeding in Lagerstroemia.

Abstract: Due to the large volumes of solid waste produced by the traditional arsenic-rich lime iron salt precipitation method treatment produced during wet-smelting by precious metal workshops, raw As(V)-rich wastewater from a domestic metallurgical enterprise was chosen as the research object. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) was used to remove arsenate (As(V)) from raw wastewater. Factors affecting the adsorption of As(V), such as the ZVI size and adsorption time, were investigated. The As(V) removal percentage was 〉 98.2% when using 40, 100, 250, or 300 mesh ZVI in a 2.8 mg·L−1 As(V) solution at pH 7, with an iron mass–wastewater ratio of 5 g/100 mL, and 12 h reaction time. The As(V) removal percentage was 〉 86.5% when using 40 mesh ZVI after 50 min of reaction. A comprehensive evaluation was performed on the effects of factors such as cost and water head loss. Here, 40 mesh ZVI was used for column-based separation, in which the mass of solid waste was very small. Column experiments indicated that the adsorbent more efficiently eliminated arsenate in comparison to the earlier reported adsorbents. High bed volumes (BV) of 3200 BV, 6300 BV, and 8400 BV up to a breakthrough concentration of 100 μg·L−1 were achieved for arsenate removal in the presence of 2.8 mg·L−1 of arsenic. The empty bed contact times (EBCTs) were 2.6 min, 5.1 min, and 9.8 min, respectively. Furthermore, the concentrations of other pollutants such as Cu2+, Zn2+, F−, Cd2+, Cr6+, Pb2+, and F- met the national discharge standard. The elimination of As(V) and other heavy metals from solutions employing ZVI is efficient, cheap, and produces no secondary environmental pollution, making it an ideal candidate for heavy metal removal from wastewater.

Abstract: 230Th/U dating can provide high-precision age constraints on Quaternary hydrothermal sulfides. However, low content of U and Th often involves extraction chemistry for the separation and enrichment of U and Th, but these chemical processes are very complex. We developed a simplified procedure consisting of total sample dissolution and single-column extraction chemistry, which can reduce the time and improve the accuracy of the dating. Concentrated HCl-HF followed by HNO3 was added to ensure complete dissolution. A single column filled with 0.4 mL of AG 1-X8 anion resin was used, then 8 M HNO3, 8 M HCl and 0.1 M HNO3 were used to elute most of the matrix metals, Th and U. This process provided more than 95% recoveries for U and Th, and negligible blanks. Meanwhile, Pb and Bi interferences were tested and showed no effect on the U and Th isotope ratio. The 230Th/238U activity of the Geological Survey of Japan geochemical reference material JZn-1 in secular equilibrium was determined and showed a radioactive equilibrium (1.00 ± 0.01, n = 5, all errors 2σ) and an in-house standard QS-1 was consistent to 0.0078 ± 0.0001 (n = 8, ±2σ) with an average age of 705 ± 10 yrs BP (n = 8, ±2σ). The technique greatly shortens the sample preparation time and allows more concise and effective analysis of U-Th isotopes. It is ideally suited for the high-precision 230Th/U dating of Quaternary submarine hydrothermal sulfides and sulfides from other settings.

Abstract: Over the past decade, organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) have shown unprecedented growth in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 3.8% to 25.7%. However, intrinsic thermal instability and lead toxicity are obstacles limiting its large–scale commercialization. Thus, all-inorganic CsSnI3 perovskite has drawn remarkable interest owing to its nontoxicity, excellent thermal stability, low-cost fabrication, and spectacular photoelectric characteristics, including ideal bandgap range, long carrier lifetime, and large absorption coefficient. Many studies have shown that the device performances are closely related to the morphology and crystallinity of perovskite films. In this review, the physical properties of CsSnI3 perovskite are summarized. Furthermore, this review primarily narrates the recent progress in optimizing the morphology by various strategies such as additive engineering, composition regulation, and deposition techniques, emphasizing their effects on grain sizes, film uniformity, grain boundary, and defect passivation.
