Abstract: Although the genetics and preliminary mapping of the cabbage yellow-green-leaf mutant YL-1 has been extensively studied, transcriptome profiling associated with the yellow-green-leaf mutant of YL-1 has not been discovered. Positional mapping with two populations showed that the yellow-green-leaf gene ygl-1 is located in a recombination-suppressed genomic region. Then, a bulk segregant RNA-seq (BSR) was applied to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using an F3 population (YL-1 × 11-192) and a BC2 population (YL-1 × 01-20). Among the 37,286 unique genes, 5730 and 4118 DEGs were detected between the yellow-leaf and normal-leaf pools from the F3 and BC2 populations. BSR analysis with four pools greatly reduced the number of common DEGs from 4924 to 1112. In the ygl-1 gene mapping region with suppressed recombination, 43 common DEGs were identified. Five of the DEGs were related to chloroplasts, including the down-regulated Bo1g087310, Bo1g094360, and Bo1g098630 and the up-regulated Bo1g059170 and Bo1g098440. The Bo1g098440 and Bo1g098630 genes were excluded by qRT-PCR. Hence, we inferred that these three DEGs (Bo1g094360, Bo1g087310, and Bo1g059170) in the mapping interval may be tightly associated with the development of the yellow-green-leaf mutant phenotype.

Abstract: Low-water-soluble disperse dyes possess a broad color gamut and good durability, but they need chemical or physical modification before being used in inks and can only be applied to several kinds of hydrophobic fabrics. In this work, disperse dyes/P(St-BA-MAA) nanospheres (known as DPN) absorbed by sodium nitrilotriacetate (known as NTA@DPN) were prepared and applied into ink formulations, which exhibited high dye fixation, long-term stability and self-curable ability without addition of any binder. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed the nanospheres have homogeneous core-shell spherical shape and the average diameter increased by 20.6 nm after coloration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements illustrated the interaction between dyes and nanospheres and indicated that the colored nanospheres contained both dye molecules and crystalline dyes. The Zeta potential and particle size measurements demonstrated that the dispersion stability was improved when sodium nitrilotriacetate (NTA) was absorbed onto DPN. The rheological behavior of the NTA@DPN inks was Newtonian and desired droplet formation was achieved at the viscosity of 4.23 mPa·s. Both hydrophilic cotton and hydrophobic polyester fabrics were cationic modified before used, which had an excellent image quality and desired rubbing fastness after inkjet printing. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed NTA@DPN formed stable deposits on the surface of modified fibers and could self-cure to form continuous film coating on the fiber surface after being baked at 150 °C without addition of any binder.

Abstract: This paper investigates the environmental impacts of two commonly used steel roofing and wall-cladding products in New Zealand over their life cycle, taking into consideration the recycling process. The recycling process of steel is in line with the Circular Economy (CE) approach, where the goal is to prolong the material’s lifetime and possibly reduce its environmental impacts and material waste. Although the benefit of recycling steel is well recognised, the environmental impact values of different specific steel products cannot be generalised and need to be estimated. For this, life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) were implemented to quantify the environmental impacts of the investigated steel products and to analyse the significance of the recycling process in reducing the impacts on the environment. This study considered modules C1–C4 and D to estimate the impacts of steel products. It was found that the recycled steel materials have an effect on reducing the environmental impacts, particularly the global warming potential (GWP) and photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP), both of which were negative and of −2.36 × 106 kg CO2eq and −8.10 × 102 kg C2H4eq, respectively. However, it is important to note that not all impacts were reduced by recycling steel, which creates trade-offs within each impact indicator. In addition, when compared with locally sourced material cladding, the imported material cladding had a 6% higher negative impact value for both GWP and POCP.

Abstract: Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a vegetable rich in glucosinolates (GSLs) that have proven health benefits. To gain insights into the synthesis of GSLs in cabbage, we systematically analyzed GSLs biosynthetic genes (GBGs) in the entire cabbage genome. In total, 193 cabbage GBGs were identified, which were homologous to 106 GBGs in Arabidopsis thaliana. Most GBGs in cabbage have undergone negative selection. Many homologous GBGs in cabbage and Chinese cabbage differed in expression patterns indicating the unique functions of these homologous GBGs. Spraying five exogenous hormones significantly altered expression levels of GBGs in cabbage. For example, MeJA significantly upregulated side chain extension genes BoIPMILSU1-1 and BoBCAT-3-1, and the expression of core structure construction genes BoCYP83A1 and BoST5C-1, while ETH significantly repressed the expression of side chain extension genes such as BoIPMILSU1-1, BoCYP79B2-1, and BoMAMI-1, and some transcription factors, namely BoMYB28-1, BoMYB34-1, BoMYB76-1, BoCYP79B2-1, and BoMAMI-1. Phylogenetically, the CYP83 family and CYP79B and CYP79F subfamilies may only be involved in GSL synthesis in cruciferous plants. Our unprecedented identification and analysis of GBGs in cabbage at the genome-wide level lays a foundation for the regulation of GSLs synthesis through gene editing and overexpression.

Abstract: The traditional linear economy (LE) approach based on a “take-make-dispose” plan that has been used in building activities over a long period has a significant impact on the environment. In the LE approach, the used materials are usually sent to landfills rather than recycled, resulting in resource depletion and excessive carbon emissions. A circular economy (CE) is expected to solve these environmental problems by promoting material “closed-loop systems”. This study was intended to quantify and analyse the global warming potential (GWP) values of specific metal roofing and cladding products to promote CE thinking. A spatiotemporal model integrated with the life cycle assessment (LCA) tool was used to quantify the GWP value of the steel products in the investigated buildings. The study analysed ten case buildings located in six different cities in New Zealand: Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Tauranga, and Christchurch. The production stages (A1–A3), water processing (C3), disposal (C4), and recycle, reuse, and recovery stages (D) were the focus of the study in analysing the GWP values of the product’s life cycle. The study found that the production stages became the most significant emitters (approximately 99.67%) of the investigated steel products’ GWP values compared to other selected life cycle stages. However, when considering the recycling stages of the steel products, the GWP value was reduced up to 32%. Therefore, by implementing the recycling process, the amount of GWP can be reduced, consequently limiting the building activities’ environmental impacts. In addition, the integration of spatial analysis and LCA was found to have potential use and benefit in future urban mining and the development of the CE approach in the construction industry.

Abstract: Background: Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective health investments to prevent and control communicable diseases. Improving the vaccination rate of children is important for all nations, and for China in particular since the advent of the two-child policy. This study aims to elicit the stated preference of parents for vaccination following recent vaccine-related incidents in China. Potential preference heterogeneity was also explored among respondents. Methods: A discrete choice experiment was developed to elicit parental preferences regarding the key features of vaccines in 2019. The study recruited a national sample of parents from 10 provinces who had at least one child aged between 6 months and 5 years old. A conditional logit model and a mixed logit model were used to estimate parental preference. Results: A total of 598 parents completed the questionnaire; among them, 428 respondents who passed the rational tests were analyzed. All attributes except for the severity of diseases prevented by vaccines were statistically significant. The risk of severe side effects and protection rates were the two most important factors explaining parents’ decisions about vaccination. The results of the mixed logit model with interactions indicate that fathers or rural parents were more likely to vaccinate their children, and children whose health was not good were also more likely to be vaccinated. In addition, parents who were not more than 30 years old had a stronger preference for efficiency, and well-educated parents preferred imported vaccines with the lowest risk of severe side effects. Conclusion: When deciding about vaccinations for their children, parents in China are mostly driven by vaccination safety and vaccine effectiveness and were not affected by the severity of diseases. These findings will be useful for increasing the acceptability of vaccination in China.

Abstract: Ships sailing through cold regions frequently encounter floe ice fields. An air-bubble system that reduces friction between the hull and ice floes is thus considered useful for the reduction of ice-induced resistance. In this study, a numerical analysis procedure based on coupled finite volume method (FVM) and discrete element method (DEM) is proposed to simulate complicated hull-water-gas-ice interactions for ice-going ships installed with air-bubble systems. The simulations reveal that after turning on the air-bubble system ice floes in contact with the hull side wall are pushed away from the hull by the gas-water mixture, resulting in an ice-free zone close to the side hull. It is found that the drag reduction rate increases with the increase of ventilation, while the bow ventilation plays a deciding role in the overall ice-resistance reduction. The proposed procedure is expected to facilitate design of new generations of ice-going ships.

Abstract: Effective control of the cohesive force between hydrate particles is the key to prevent their aggregation, which then causes pipeline blockage. The hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) value of surfactants was proposed as an important parameter for the evaluation and design of hydrate anti-agglomerants. A microscopic manipulation method was used to measure the cohesive forces between cyclopentane hydrate particles in the presence of Tween and Span series surfactants with different HLB values; moreover, the measured cohesive force was compared with the results of calculations based on the liquid bridge force model. Combined with the surface morphology and wettability of the hydrate particles, we analyzed the mechanism by which surfactants with different HLB values influence the cohesion between hydrate particles. The results show that for both Tween (hydrophilic, HLB 〉 10) and Span (hydrophobic, HLB 〈 10) surfactants, the cohesive force between cyclopentane hydrate particles decreased with decreasing HLB. The experimental results were in good agreement with the results of calculations based on the liquid bridge force model. The cohesive force between hydrate particles increased with increasing concentration of Tween surfactants, while in the case of the Span series, the cohesive force decreased with increasing surfactant concentration. In the formation process of cyclopentane hydrate particles, the aggregation of low-HLB surfactant molecules at the oil–water or gas–water interface increases the surface roughness and hydrophobicity of the hydrate particles and inhibits the formation of liquid bridges between particles, thus reducing the cohesion between particles. Therefore, the hydrate aggregation and the associated blockage risks can be reduced.

Abstract: Petal color is an important agronomic trait in cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata). Although the key gene BoCCD4 has been functionally characterized, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism of petal color formation in cabbage is still unclear. In this study, we applied the transcriptome analysis of yellow petals from the cabbage inbred line YL-1 and white petals from the Chinese kale inbred line A192-1 and the BoCCD4-overexpressing transgenic line YF-2 (YL-1 background), which revealed 1928 DEGs common to both the A192-1 vs. YL-1 and the YL-1 vs. YF-2 comparison groups. One key enzyme-encoding gene, BoAAO3, and two key TF-encoding genes, Bo2g151880 (WRKY) and Bo3g024180 (SBP), related to carotenoid biosynthesis were significantly up-regulated in both the A192-1 and YF-2 petals, which was consistent with the expression pattern of BoCCD4. We speculate that these key genes may interact with BoCCD4 to jointly regulate carotenoid biosynthesis in cabbage petals. This study provides new insights into the molecular regulatory mechanism underlying petal color formation in cabbage.

Abstract: With the popularization of 5G communications, the scale of social networks has grown rapidly, and the types of messages have become increasingly complex. The rapid increases in the number of access nodes and the amount of data have put a greater burden on the transmission of information in the networks. However, when transferring data from a large number of users, the performance of traditional opportunistic network routing algorithms is insufficient, which often leads to problems such as high energy consumption, network congestion, and data packet loss. The way in which to improve this transmission environment has become a difficult task. Therefore, in order to ensure the effective transmission of data and reduce network congestion, this paper proposed a link prediction model based on triangular relationships in opportunistic social networks (LPMBT). In the topological structure of the social network, the algorithm scores links based on the frequency of use and selects the optimal relay node based on the score. It can also efficiently track the target node and reconstruct the sub-community. The simulation experimental results showed that the algorithm had excellent performance, effectively reduced overhead, reduced the end-to-end delay, and greatly improved the data transfer rate in the opportunistic network.
