Abstract: The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 h in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the ’Global VLBI Alliance’ to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth.

Abstract: The ultra-high-speed magnetic abrasive machining (UHSMAM) process is a surface improvement technique, which has been widely used to minimize the surface accuracy and change the precision morphology of difficult-to-machine materials. Surface integrity plays an important role in the machining process, because it is used to evaluate the high stress and the loaded components on the machined surface. It is important to evaluate the plastically deformed layers in ultra-precision machining surface of material. However, the usual plastic strains in the ultra-precision machining surface are significantly difficult to consider. In this paper, an ultra-high-speed magnetic abrasive machining technique is used to improve the surface accuracy and dimensional accuracy of an AISI 304 bars. Additionally, the subsequent recrystallizations technique is used for measuring the plastic strain on machined surface of AISI 304 bars. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effects of an UHSMAM process on the plastic strains and the strain energy of the machined surface, and to evaluate the residual strain in the plastic deformation of AISI 304 bars materials by analyzing a plastically deformed layer. The results showed that the plastic strain of the material did not change after machined by an UHSMAM process. Based on the results, an UHSMAM process could significantly improve the surface roughness, micro-diameter, and removal weight of AISI 304 bars effectively. The surface roughness Ra of AISI 304 bars was improved from 0.32 µm to 0.03 µm for 40 s of machining time at 80,000 rpm of workpiece revolution speed.

Abstract: This study aimed to re-evaluate the pathogenic characteristics of Chryseobacterium balustinum, generally known as a food spoilage bacterium. We observed mass mortality in a rainbow trout farm in Jeonbuk province, Republic of Korea. Fewer studies have reported on rainbow trout mortality or infections in Korea than in other countries; among these, few studies have reported cases of Chryseobacterium infections. Sequencing analysis revealed that this bacterium is closely related (99.24%) to Chryseobacterium balustinum. Bacterial identification assays, including the API test, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis, found the 24 isolates to be C. balustinum. The strain showed multiple resistance to 18 of 25 antibiotics tested. Primary clinical symptoms of its infection are damage to the fins, necrosis, and cytoplasmic vacuolation in hepatocytes. The pathogenicity of the strain was determined following Koch’s postulates and the challenge test. The present results suggest that C. balustinum WLT can be considered a multidrug-resistant zoonotic pathogen responsible for mortality and economic losses.

Abstract: Vibrio coralliilyticus is known as a coral pathogen that also infects marine bivalve larvae worldwide. It is considered to be one of the major constraints in artificial marine bivalve seed production as it causes mortality. In this study, we first isolated and characterized a high virulent of V. coralliilyticus designated as SNUTY-1 that was the cause of Pacific oyster larvae mortality in Korea. In the pathogenicity test, exposure to 2.14 × 105 CFU/mL for 24 h caused mortality to 88.65 ± 2.4% of the tested healthy Pacific oyster larvae. SNUTY-1 showed anti-microbial resistance to β-lactams, such as penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems. We sequenced and assembled the complete genome of SNUTY-1 (5,842,676 bp), consisting of two chromosomes (Chr I and Chr II) and two plasmids (pSNUTY1 and pSNUTY2). The COG functional analysis confirmed that Chr I had more genes associated with basic cellular functions in comparison to Chr II. The results of the phylogenetic trees based on OrthoANI values indicated that the SNUTY-1 was closely related to V. coralliilyticus strains. SNUTY-1 had a unique plasmid (pSNUTY2), which could mean that the Korean isolate is different from other sequenced V. coralliilyticus strains from different geographical origins. Toxic proteins such as cytolysin/hemolysin and extracellular metalloprotease genes were encoded on Chr I and Chr II of SNUTY-1. These data facilitate the control of V. coralliilyticus infections in aquaculture by providing valuable insights into the biodiversity of this organism and valuable information for the study of virulence factors.

Abstract: The bacterial genus Pseudomonas is a common causative agent of infections in veterinary medicine. In this study, we focused on Pseudomonas aeruginosa canine otitis externa isolates. Due to prolonged antibiotic treatment of otitis externa, antibiotic resistance is common and has become a major complication. Many alternatives to antibiotics have been studied, with bacteriophages emerging as the most promising alternatives. Here, we isolated and characterized a novel phage, pPa_SNUABM_DT01, by investigating its morphology, growth, lysis kinetics, and genomic characteristics. Phages have a vigorous capacity to eliminate bacterial cells through bacterial lysis. This capacity is dependent on the multiplicity of infection (MOI), but even at low MOIs, the phage successfully inhibited bacterial regrowth. The phage genome was 265,520 bp in size and comprised 312 putative open reading frames (ORFs). Comparative genome analysis demonstrated that the phage is a novel species in Myoviridae. The nucleotide similarity was moderately high compared with the Pseudomonas virus, Noxifer. However, a phylogenetic analysis and a dot plot indicated that pPa_SNUABM_DT01 is not closely related to the Phikzvirus or Noxifervirus genus but, instead, belongs to a novel one. The genome comparisons also indicate that the phage, pPa_SNUABM_DT01, could be a novel genus.

Abstract: Vibrio coralliilyticus (V. coralliilyticus) is a pathogen that causes mass mortality in marine bivalve hatcheries worldwide. In this study, we used a bacteriophage (phage) cocktail to prevent multiple-antibiotic-resistant (MAR) and phage-resistant (PR) V. coralliilyticus infection in Pacific oyster (Crassostreagigas) larvae. To prevent the occurrence of phage-resistant strains and decrease the effect of mono-phage treatment, we prepared a phage cocktail containing three types of V. coralliilyticus-specific phages and tested its prophylactic efficacy against MAR and PR V. coralliilyticus infection. The results of the cell lysis test showed that the phage cocktail showed an excellent bactericidal effect against the MAR and PR variants in contrast to the experimental group treated with two mono phages (pVco-5 and pVco-7). An in vivo test using Pacific oyster larvae also confirmed the preventive effect against MAR and PR variants. In conclusion, the application of the phage cocktail effectively prevented V. coralliilyticus infection in marine bivalve seedling production. Furthermore, it is expected to reduce damage to the aquaculture industry caused by the occurrence of MAR and PR V. coralliilyticus. Therefore, phage cocktails may be used for the control of various bacterial diseases.

Abstract: The transition-metal-catalyzed alcohol dehydrogenation to carboxylic acids has been identified as an atom-economical and attractive process. Among various catalytic systems, Ru-based systems have been the most accessed and investigated ones. With our growing interest in the discovery of new Ru catalysts comprising N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands for the dehydrogenative reactions of alcohols, we designed and prepared five NHC/Ru complexes ([Ru]-1–[Ru] -5) bearing different ancillary NHC ligands. Moreover, the effects of ancillary and additional ligands on the alcohol dehydrogenation with KOH were thoroughly explored, followed by the screening of other parameters. Accordingly, a highly active catalytic system, which is composed of [Ru]-5 combined with an additional NHC precursor L5, was discovered, affording a variety of acid products in a highly efficient manner. Gratifyingly, an extremely low Ru loading (125 ppm) and the maximum TOF value until now (4800) were obtained.

Abstract: To solve the slow kinetics of polysulfide conversion reaction in Li-S battery, many transition metal nitrides were developed for sulfur hosts. Herein, novel polyaniline-coated porous vanadium nitride (VN) microrods were synthesized via a calcination, washing and polyaniline-coating process, which served as sulfur host for Li-S battery exhibited high electrochemical performance. The porous VN microrods with high specific surface area provided enough interspace to overcome the volume change of the cathode. The outer layer of polyaniline as a conductive shell enhanced the cathode conductivity, effectively blocked the shuttle effect of polysulfides, thus improving the cycling capacity of Li-S battery. The cathode exhibited an initial capacity of 1007 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, and the reversible capacity remained at 735 mAh g−1 over 150 cycles.

Abstract: Many gram-negative bacteria use type IV secretion systems to deliver effector molecules to a wide range of target cells. These substrate proteins, which are called type IV secreted effectors (T4SE), manipulate host cell processes during infection, often resulting in severe diseases or even death of the host. Therefore, identification of putative T4SEs has become a very active research topic in bioinformatics due to its vital roles in understanding host-pathogen interactions. PSI-BLAST profiles have been experimentally validated to provide important and discriminatory evolutionary information for various protein classification tasks. In the present study, an accurate computational predictor termed iT4SE-EP was developed for identifying T4SEs by extracting evolutionary features from the position-specific scoring matrix and the position-specific frequency matrix profiles. First, four types of encoding strategies were designed to transform protein sequences into fixed-length feature vectors based on the two profiles. Then, the feature selection technique based on the random forest algorithm was utilized to reduce redundant or irrelevant features without much loss of information. Finally, the optimal features were input into a support vector machine classifier to carry out the prediction of T4SEs. Our experimental results demonstrated that iT4SE-EP outperformed most of existing methods based on the independent dataset test.

Abstract: The dynamic characteristics and tooth spalling fault features are studied for the high-contact-ratio spur gear bearing system. The bending torsional dynamic model is proposed in this study for the gear bearing system with an ellipsoid spalling fault. This model also considers time-varying meshing stiffness, tooth friction, fractal gear backlash, and comprehensive transmission error. The meshing stiffness of the system is evaluated using the potential energy method. The bifurcation diagram, time-domain waveform, Poincaré map, phase map, frequency spectrum, and related three-dimensional map are used as tools to analyze the system’s dynamic response qualitatively. The results reveal that the system’s motion with ellipsoid tooth spalling defect exhibits rich dynamic behavior. The response of the proposed dynamic model is consistent with experimental results in the frequency domain. Therefore, the developed dynamic model can predict the system’s vibration behavior with localized spalling fault. Hence, it could also provide a theoretical foundation for future spall defect diagnosis of the gear transmission system.
