    Abstract: This work implements an intelligent forest monitoring system using the Internet of things (IoT) with the wireless network communication technology of a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN), a long range (LoRa), and a narrow-band Internet of things (NB-IoT). A solar micro-weather station with LoRa-based sensors and communications was built to monitor the forest status and information such as the light intensity, air pressure, ultraviolet intensity, CO2, etc. Moreover, a multi-hop algorithm for the LoRa-based sensors and communications is proposed to solve the problem of long-distance communication without 3G/4G. For the forest without electricity, we installed solar panels to supply electricity for the sensors and other equipment. In order to avoid the problem of insufficient solar panels due to insufficient sunlight in the forest, we also connected each solar panel to a battery to store electricity. The experimental results show the implementation of the proposed method and its performance.

    Abstract: Improving the assessment of breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) 4 lesions and reducing unnecessary biopsies are urgent clinical issues. In this prospective study, a radiomic nomogram based on the automated breast volume scanner (ABVS) was constructed to identify benign and malignant BI-RADS 4 lesions and evaluate its value in reducing unnecessary biopsies. A total of 223 histologically confirmed BI-RADS 4 lesions were enrolled and assigned to the training and validation cohorts. A radiomic score was generated from the axial, sagittal, and coronal ABVS images. Combining the radiomic score and clinical-ultrasound factors, a radiomic nomogram was developed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The nomogram integrating the radiomic score, lesion size, and BI-RADS 4 subcategories showed good discrimination between malignant and benign BI-RADS 4 lesions in the training (AUC, 0.959) and validation (AUC, 0.925) cohorts. Moreover, 42.5% of unnecessary biopsies would be reduced by using the nomogram, but nine (4%) malignant BI-RADS 4 lesions were unfortunately missed, of which 4A (77.8%) and small-sized ( 〈 10 mm) lesions (66.7%) accounted for the majority. The ABVS radiomics nomogram may be a potential tool to reduce unnecessary biopsies of BI-RADS 4 lesions, but its ability to detect small BI-RADS 4A lesions needs to be improved.

    Abstract: We assessed the mental health of parents (N = 1450, Mage = 40.76) of special needs children during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted an online survey comprising items on demographic data; two self-designed questionnaires (children’s behavioral problems/psychological demand of parents during COVID-19); and four standardized questionnaires, including the General Health Questionnaire, Perceived Social Support, Parenting Stress Index, and Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five Factor Inventory. The results showed that there were significant differences among parents of children with different challenges. Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder were more likely to have mental health problems compared to parents whose children had an intellectual disability or a visual or hearing impairment. Behavioral problems of children and psychological demands of parents were common factors predicting the mental health of all parents. Parent–child dysfunctional interactions and parenting distress were associated with parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. Family support, having a difficult child, and parenting distress were associated with having children with an intellectual disability. It is necessary to pay attention to the parents’ mental health, provide more social and family support, and reduce parenting pressures.

    Abstract: Food safety is a significant public health issue in both developed and developing countries. Previous detection methods struggle to meet the current demands. We have proposed a new way to detect pathogens, allowing detection to be visualized by the naked eye. Using our newly developed assay, when target genes are present in the reaction, corresponding padlock probes form closed-loop molecules. Each reaction tube contains a pair of universal primers for identifying target genes. The ring padlock probes and corresponding universal primers start hyperbranched rolling circle amplification (HRCA) under the action of the polymerase, so as to gain branched chain amplification products, which are irreversibly entangled with magnetic particles to form aggregated magnetic particle clusters, and the detection results are visible to naked eyes. On the contrary, by using linear probes, the clustering of magnetic particles will not be produced. This method was applied to the detection of five food-borne pathogens enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), with detection limits of 1 × 103, 1 × 104, 1 × 103, 1 × 104 and 1 × 102 CFU/mL, respectively. This method can realize multiplex automatic detection of nucleic acid and shows great development potential in the field of molecular diagnosis.

    Abstract: In this study, a new method for economical utilization of coffee grounds was developed and tested. The resulting materials were characterized by proximate and elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N2 adsorption–desorption at 77 K. The experimental data show bio-oil yields reaching 42.3%. The optimal activated carbon was obtained under vacuum pyrolysis self-activation at an operating temperature of 450 °C, an activation temperature of 600 °C, an activation time of 30 min, and an impregnation ratio with phosphoric acid of 150 wt.%. Under these conditions, the yield of activated carbon reached 27.4% with a BET surface area of 1420 m2·g−1, an average pore size of 2.1 nm, a total pore volume of 0.747 cm3·g−1, and a t-Plot micropore volume of 0.428 cm3·g−1. In addition, the surface of activated carbon looked relatively rough, containing mesopores and micropores with large amounts of corrosion pits.

    Abstract: Perovskite microwires have a larger surface-to-volume ratio and better photoelectric conversion efficiency than perovskite films. The degree of crystallization also affects the optoelectrical performances of perovskite microwires. Laser annealing was regarded as a tool for crystallization. High light absorption induced fast heating process. A 405 nm violet laser located near the absorption peak of typical perovskite films was employed as the annealing laser. In an in situ experimental design, the annealing laser beam was combined into the micro Raman measurement system. Real-time information of the annealing and crystallization was provided. Many excellent works were done, and typically needed offline optoelectronic measurements. An mW-level continuous-wave laser beam can provide enough kinetic energy for crystalline in perovskite microwires. The thermal distribution of the perovskite microwire under the annealing laser beams was considered here. Polarized Raman signals can provide evidence of the perovskite microwires crystallization. This work offered the novel approach of an on-site, real-time laser-induced thermal annealing design for perovskite microwires. This approach can be used in other material procedures. Intensity-dependent conditions were crucial for the annealing processes and analyzed in detail. The substrate effect was found. This proposed scheme provided integrated novel, scalable, and highly effective designs of perovskite-based devices.

    Abstract: Porcine sapelovirus (PSV) is a ubiquitous virus in farmed pigs that is associated with SMEDI syndrome, polioencephalomyelitis, and diarrhea. However, there are few reports on the prevalence and molecular characterization of PSV in Fujian Province, Southern China. In this study, the prevalence of PSV and a poetical combinative strain PSV2020 were characterized using real-time PCR, sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis. As a result, an overall sample prevalence of 30.8% was detected in 260 fecal samples, and a farm prevalence of 76.7% was observed in 30 Fujian pig farms, from 2020 to 2022. Noteably, a high rate of PSV was found in sucking pigs. Bioinformatics analysis showed that the full-length genome of PSV2020 was 7550 bp, and the genetic evolution of its ORF region was closest to the G1 subgroup, which was isolated from Asia and America; the similarity of nucleotides and amino acids to other PSVs was 59.5~88.7% and 51.7~97.0%, respectively. However, VP1 genetic evolution analysis showed a distinct phylogenetic topology from the ORF region; PSV2020 VP1 was closer to the DIAPD5469-10 strain isolated from Italy than strains isolated from Asia and America, which comprise the G1 subgroup based on the ORF region. Amino acid discrepancy analysis illustrated that the PSV2020 VP1 gene inserted twelve additional nucleotides, corresponding to four additional amino acids (STAE) at positions 898–902 AAs. Moreover, a potential recombination signal was observed in the 2A coding region, near the 3′ end of VP1, owing to recombination analysis. Additionally, 3D genetic evolutionary analysis showed that all reference strains demonstrated, to some degree, regional conservation. These results suggested that PSV was highly prevalent in Fujian pig farms, and PSV2020, a PSV-1 genotype strain, showed gene diversity and recombination in evolutionary progress. This study also laid a scientific foundation for the investigation of PSV epidemiology, molecular genetic characteristics, and vaccine development.

    Abstract: The response of alfalfa to water and salinity stress differs during the whole growth period, and water stress has the most severe effects on the yield of alfalfa at the branching stage. However, the presence of soil salt can also enhance its drought resistance and alleviate the impact of water stress on yield. Thus, information on the responses of aboveground biomass, water-use efficiency and osmolytes to water and salinity stress at the branching stages of alfalfa development is urgently required. A pot experiment that combined three irrigation levels of 55–70% (W1), 70–85% (W2) and 85–100% (W3) of field capacity (FC) and four salinity levels was conducted in Dengkou County, Inner Mongolia, China, in 2018 and 2019. The percentage of mixed salt (NaCl:Na2SO4 = 1:1 [w/w]) added for the salinity treatments was 0, 2, 4 and 6% of the soil dry weight and was designated as S0–S3, respectively. The water consumption, biomass, osmolytes, such as proline and Na+, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD), of alfalfa were measured during its early flowering stage. In general, the plant height, aboveground biomass, root biomass and water consumption of alfalfa increased with the decrease in soil salinity and increase in the amount of irrigation applied. When the salt 〉 3 g kg−1, alfalfa could improve its stress resistance by increasing the contents of proline and Na+ and the activity of POD and decreasing the activity of SOD, but the aboveground biomass and water consumption decreased. However, alfalfa has a certain cross adaptation ability under water and salt stress at the branching stage, particularly when salt is less than 3 g kg−1. Compared with single water stress, adding an appropriate amount of salt (≤3 g kg−1) increased the contents of proline and Na+ and the activities of SOD and POD, which led to water consumption and aboveground biomass of alfalfa increases of 11.93% and 17.51%, respectively. In conclusion, the alfalfa was tolerant to moderate (3 g kg−1) salt stress. The alfalfa with higher proline, SOD and POD activity and Na+ was better able to yield well under salt stress. Meanwhile, combined with moderate irrigation (70–85% FC), the productivity of alfalfa was improved better. The results can provide a theoretical basis for the utilization of alfalfa in salinized land.

    Abstract: The existence of ice in nature will threaten the safety of navigation and water operations in cold regions. In order to improve the knowledge system of ice strength, the uniaxial compressive strength of distilled water ice grown at different temperatures is studied in this paper. Distilled water ice samples grown at −5 °C, −10 °C, −15 °C, −20 °C, −25 °C, −30 °C and −35 °C are prepared in the cryogenic laboratory. The density and grain size are measured. The uniaxial compressive strength tests are carried out at −10 °C. The stress-strain curves and the mechanical properties and failure modes of ice are obtained by loading along the vertical direction in the strain rate range of 10−6 s−1 to 10−2 s−1. It is found that the uniaxial compressive strength of ice is a power function of strain rate and a linear relationship with the −1/2 power of grain size. Combined with the relationship between strength and grain size and the relationship between grain size and temperature, it is deduced that the peak compressive strength has a logarithmic relationship with the growth temperature. In addition, it shows that the growth temperature affects the strength of ice by controlling the grain size.
