Abstract: Ecological flow is an important indicator for reflecting the stability of a watershed ecosystem. The calculation of ecological discharge under hydrological variation has become a research hot-spot. The Ganjiang River south of Poyang Lake in China was taken as an example in this study. Hydrological Alteration Diagnosis System methods were used to detect the change-points. The Distributed Time Variation Gain Model (DTVGM) was used to carry out runoff restoration. The Probability-weighted Flow Duration Curve was applied to calculate the ecological flow. The results showed that: (1) The hydrological alteration of the Waizhou Station occurred in 1991, the annual runoff increased by 10%, and the Gini coefficient (GI) increased by 0.07 after the change-point. The change in precipitation was the main driving factors. (2) The R value and NSE of the DTVGM were greater than 0.84, which represents the feasibility of the model used to restore runoff. (3) Compared to the traditional hydrological method, the proposed method can better reflect the inter-annual difference of ecological flow, flow ranges for high, normal, and low flow years are 398–3771 m3/s, 352–2160 m3/s, and 277–1657 m3/s, respectively. The calculation method of ecological flow in rivers considering hydrological variation can more scientifically reflect the impact of hydrological variation on ecological flow process, ecological flow under different human activities that can be calculated, such as dam control, water intake and water transfer, furthermore, it also provides a scientific basis for water resources planning and allocation under changing environment.

Abstract: In this study, we developed a novel dielectric tomography system for in-situ tracking three-dimensional (3D) soil water dynamics. The system was designed to control a single dielectric tube sensor that automatically lowered in a PVC tube array installed in-situ to determine the water content of a soil profile, which eliminated probe-to-probe uncertainties and labor costs. Two tests for evaluating the novel system were conducted (i) to analyze and correct the positional error of the probe due to out-of-step errors of stepper motors, and (ii) to track and visualize 3D soil water temporal variations in a soil tank with heterogenetic bulk densities and initial water contents under drip irrigation. The results show that the positioning correcting algorithm combined with starting point alignment can minimize the positioning error of the probe during the 3D tomography. The single drip emitter test illustrated spatial and temporal variations of soil water content due to heterogeneous soil properties in vertical and horizontal directions around the access tube array. Based on these data, 3D distributions of soil water dynamics were visualized. The developed tomography system has potential application to be extended to the local scale in a greenhouse or the large scale in an agricultural field. Future research should explore the performance for agricultural crop irrigation or for modeling and validating soil water flow or hydrological process under either steady state or non-steady state condition.

Abstract: Under the erosion of seawater–ice two-phase flow, seawater in pipelines of polar ships can cause the pipeline failures that threaten the safety of navigations. The discrete phase model (DPM) and erosion wear model (EWM) were established by using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method for numerical analysis of the 90° elbow with relatively severe erosion. This paper explores the erosion effect of pipelines under different conditions and puts forward optimal measures for pipeline protection. Compared with the existing multiphase flow research, the novelty of this study is that vibration conditions are considered and parameters such as two-phase flow velocity, ice packing factor (IPF), ice particle diameter and ice particle rotation characteristics are combined with vibration conditions. Combined with the comprehensive analysis of erosion effects of static pipelines, a general law of seawater pipeline wear under vibration is obtained. The results show that pipeline wear under vibration is more serious than under static conditions. Under static conditions, the wear of the same section in the pipeline increases with the increases of two-phase flow velocity and IPF. However, under vibration conditions, when the velocity is less than 3 m/s, the wear of the pipeline has no significant change, while when the velocity is over 3 m/s, the wear rate increases significantly. The particle diameter has little effect on the wear of static pipes, but under the vibration condition, the pipe wear rate decreases with the increase of particle diameter, and it starts to stabilize when the diameter exceeds 0.3 mm. If the rotation characteristics of ice particles are taken into account, the wear rate along the pipeline is significantly higher than that without particle rotation.

Abstract: Qingwen Baidu Decoction (QBD) is an extraordinarily “cold” formula. It was traditionally used to cure epidemic hemorrhagic fever, intestinal typhoid fever, influenza, sepsis and so on. The purpose of this study was to discover relationships between the change of the constituents in different extracts of QBD and the pharmacological effect in a rat model of acute lung injury (ALI) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The study aimed to discover the changes in constituents of different QBD extracts and the pharmacological effects on acute lung injury (ALI) induced by LPS. The results demonstrated that high dose and middle dose of QBD had significantly potent anti-inflammatory effects and reduced pulmonary edema caused by ALI in rats (p 〈 0.05). To explore the underlying constituents of QBD, we assessed its influence of six different QBD extracts on ALI and analyzed the different constituents in the corresponding HPLC chromatograms by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method. The results showed that the pharmacological effect of QBD was related to the polarity of its extracts, and the medium polarity extracts E2 and E5 in particular displayed much better protective effects against ALI than other groups. Moreover, HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn and PCA analysis showed that verbascoside and angoroside C played a key role in reducing pulmonary edema. In addition, the current study revealed that ethyl gallate, pentagalloylglucose, galloyl paeoniflorin, mudanpioside C and harpagoside can treat ALI mainly by reducing the total cells and infiltration of activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs).

Abstract: Basal or partial resistance has been considered race-non-specific and broad-spectrum. Therefore, the identification of genes or quantitative trait loci (QTLs) conferring basal resistance and germplasm containing them is of significance in breeding crops with durable resistance. In this study, we performed a bulked segregant analysis coupled with whole-genome sequencing (BSA-seq) to identify QTLs controlling basal resistance to blast disease in an F2 population derived from two rice varieties, 02428 and LiXinGeng (LXG), which differ significantly in basal resistance to rice blast. Four candidate QTLs, qBBR-4, qBBR-7, qBBR-8, and qBBR-11, were mapped on chromosomes 4, 7, 8, and 11, respectively. Allelic and genotypic association analyses identified a novel haplotype of the durable blast resistance gene pi21 carrying double deletions of 30 bp and 33 bp in 02428 (pi21-2428) as a candidate gene of qBBR-4. We further assessed haplotypes of Pi21 in 325 rice accessions, and identified 11 haplotypes among the accessions, of which eight were novel types. While the resistant pi21 gene was found only in japonica before, three Chinese indica varieties, ShuHui881, Yong4, and ZhengDa4Hao, were detected carrying the resistant pi21-2428 allele. The pi21-2428 allele and pi21-2428-containing rice germplasm, thus, provide valuable resources for breeding rice varieties, especially indica rice varieties, with durable resistance to blast disease. Our results also lay the foundation for further identification and functional characterization of the other three QTLs to better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying rice basal resistance to blast disease.

Abstract: Slag spot surface defects often appear during continuous casting of high carbon steel billets due to the solidification characteristics of molten steel in the mold. To target the problem of surface slag spot defects that occur frequently during the continuous casting of high-carbon steel strands, we analyzed the influence of molten steel superheat, accumulated service time and the water inlet temperature of the mold, the size of the submerged entry nozzle and the physical and chemical properties of the mold powder on the slag spot defects. The production practice shows that by adjusting the superheat of molten steel to 30–35 °C, the water inlet temperature of the mold is stable at 33–35 °C. To adjust the internal and external diameter of the immersion nozzle to 30–70 mm, the viscosity and melting temperature of the mold powder were adjusted from 0.45–0.55 Pa·s, 1100–1140 °C to 0.15–0.25 Pa·s, 1020–1060 °C. The final billet surface quality was improved significantly, the billet surface was smooth, the oscillation marks were relatively smooth and regular and the slag trench ratio was reduced from the original maximum of 40–50% to less than 1%.

Abstract: Optimal frequency control of an islanded microgrid has been a challenging issue in the research field of microgrids. Recently, fractional-order calculus theory and some related control methods have attempted to handle this issue. In this paper, a novel fractional-order model predictive control (FOMPC) method is proposed to achieve the optimal frequency control of an islanded microgrid by introducing a fractional-order integral cost function into model predictive control (MPC) algorithm. Firstly, a discrete state-space model is derived for the optimal frequency control problem of an islanded microgrid. Afterward, a fractional-order integral cost function is designed to guide the FOMPC algorithm to obtain optimal control law by borrowing the Grünwald-Letnikov (GL) definition of fractional order calculus. Six simulation studies have been carried out to illustrate the superiority of FOMPC to conventional MPC under dynamical load disturbances, perturbed system parameters and random dynamical power fluctuation of wind turbines.

Abstract: This paper investigates the multidimensional spatial effects of risk spillovers among Chinese financial institutions and the dynamic evolution of financial risk contagion in the tail risk correlation network over different time periods. We first measure risk spillovers from financial submarkets to the stock market, identifying five periods using structural breakpoint tests. Then, we construct a spatial error financial network panel model by combining complex network and spatial econometric theory to explore the spatial spillover variability. Finally, we calculate the Bonacich centrality of nodes in the tail risk network and analyze the dynamic evolution of the financial impact path during the different time periods. The results show that the multidimensional spatial spillovers of financial risk among financial institutions are obvious and time varying. The spatial spillovers of financial institutions are positively correlated with the turnover rate and negatively correlated with the exchange rate, interest rate and return volatility. Financial institutions of the same type in the tail risk network display intraindustry risk clustering, and the systemically important institutions identified based on Bonacich centrality differ significantly across time. Moreover, when risk spillovers increase, external shocks’ destructive power and speed of transmission to the network rise.
