    Abstract: For rapid and unlimited cell growth and proliferation, cancer cells require large quantities of nutrients. Many metabolic pathways and nutrient uptake systems are frequently reprogrammed and upregulated to meet the demand from cancer cells, including the demand for lipids. The lipids for most adult normal cells are mainly acquired from the circulatory system. Whether different cancer cells adopt identical mechanisms to ensure sufficient lipid supply, and whether the lipid demand and supply meet each other, remains unclear, and was investigated in lung cancer cells. Results showed that, despite frequent upregulation in de novo lipogenesis and the lipid transporter system, different lung cancer cells adopt different proteins to acquire sufficient lipids, and the lipid supply frequently exceeds the demand, as significant amounts of lipids stored in the lipid droplets could be found within lung cancer cells. Lipid droplet surface protein, PLIN3, was found frequently overexpressed since the early stage in lung cancer tissues. Although the expression is not significantly associated with a specific gender, age, histology type, disease stage, and smoking habit, the frequently elevated expression of PLIN3 protein indicates the importance of lipid droplets for lung cancer. These lipid droplets are not only for nutrient storage, but are also crucial for tumor growth and proliferation, as well as survival in starvation. These results suggest that manipulation of lipid droplet formation or TG storage in lung cancer cells could potentially decrease the progression of lung cancer. Further exploration of lipid biology in lung cancer could help design novel treatment strategies.

    Abstract: Leptin (LEP) regulates glucose metabolism and energy storage in the body. Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with the upregulation of serum LEP. LEP promoter methylation is associated with obesity. So far, few studies have explored the association of BMI and OA with LEP methylation. We assessed the interaction between body mass index (BMI) and OA on LEP promoter methylation. Data of 1114 participants comprising 583 men and 558 women, aged 30–70 years were retrieved from the Taiwan Biobank Database (2008–2015). Osteoarthritis was self-reported and cases were those who reported having ever been clinically diagnosed with osteoarthritis. BMI was categorized into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity. The mean LEP promoter methylation level in individuals with osteoarthritis was 0.5509 ± 0.00437 and 0.5375 ± 0.00101 in those without osteoarthritis. The interaction between osteoarthritis and BMI on LEP promoter methylation was significant (p-value = 0.0180). With normal BMI as the reference, the mean LEP promoter methylation level was significantly higher in obese osteoarthritic individuals (β = 0.03696, p-value = 0.0187). However, there was no significant association between BMI and LEP promoter methylation in individuals without osteoarthritis, regardless of BMI. In conclusion, only obesity was significantly associated with LEP promoter methylation (higher levels) specifically in osteoarthritic patients.

    Abstract: Soy sauce, as a traditional seasoning, is widely favoured by Chinese and other Asian people for its unique colour, smell, and taste. In this study, a salt-tolerance Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain HF-130 was obtained via three rounds of ARTP (Atmospheric and Room Temperature Plasma) mutagenesis and high-salt based screening. The ethanol production of mutant HF-130 was increased by 98.8% in very high gravity fermentation. Furthermore, ATF1 gene was overexpressed in strain HF-130, generating ester-producing strain HF-130-ATF1. The ethyl acetate concentration of strain HF-130-ATF1 was increased by 130% compared to the strain HF-130. Finally, the soy sauce fermentation performance of Torulopsis globosa and HF-130-ATF1 was compared with T. globosa, HF-130, HF-130-ATF1, and Torulopsis and HF-130. Results showed ethyl acetate and isoamyl acetate concentrations in co-fermentation of T. globosa and HF-130-ATF1 were increased by 2.8-fold and 3.3-fold, respectively. In addition, the concentrations of ethyl propionate, ethyl caprylate, phenylethyl acetate, ethyl caprate, isobutyl acetate, isoamyl alcohol, phenylethyl alcohol, and phenylacetaldehyde were also improved. Notably, other three important flavour components, trimethylsilyl decyl ester, 2-methylbutanol, and octanoic acid were also detected in the co-fermentation of T. globosa and HF-130-ATF1, but not detected in the control strain T. globosa. This work is of great significance for improving the traditional soy sauce fermentation mode, and thus improving the flavour formation of soy sauce.

    Abstract: The recommendation of the optimal selling rules for any product or service is challenging, owing to the complexity of the customer’s behavior and the competitiveness existing in the telecom retail industry. This study proposes a recommendation model for selling rules that utilizes a hybrid decision-making approach based on K-means and the C5.0 decision tree to analyze the historical sales information of telecom retailers. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed recommendation model, it was used to analyze original data from a case company. The results indicated that the proposed hybrid decision-making approach resulted in sales content with a high gross profit and high agreement rates. The experimental results show each cluster that can be used to identify rules for the combination of good tariff items in different tariff ranges. Rules for the recommendation of special tariffs are also established to assist salespeople.

    Abstract: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of probiotics in the treatment of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C), we searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing probiotic care versus placebos for patients with IBS-C in five comprehensive databases (March 2022). The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool. RevMan 5.3 was used to perform a meta-analysis on stool consistency, abdominal pain, bloating, quality of life (QoL), fecal Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus counts, and adverse events. The GRADE approach was used to evaluate the certainty of the evidence. Ten RCTs involving 757 patients were included. Only three studies were rated as having a low risk of bias. The meta-analysis results show that, compared to the placebo, probiotics significantly improved stool consistency (MD = 0.72, 95% CI (0.18, 1.26), p 〈 0.05, low quality) and increased the number of fecal Bifidobacteria (MD = 1.75, 95% CI (1.51, 2.00), p 〈 0.05, low quality) and Lactobacillus (MD = 1.69, 95% CI (1.48, 1.89), p 〈 0.05, low quality), while no significant differences were found in abdominal pain scores, bloating scores, QoL scores, or the incidence of adverse events (p 〉 0.05). The low-to-very low certainty evidence suggests that probiotics might improve the stool consistency of patients with IBS-C and increase the number of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in feces with good safety. However, more high-quality studies with large samples are needed to verify the findings.

    Abstract: Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) patients experience multiple uncomfortable symptoms, which may be alleviated using music-based intervention, a nondrug treatment. This umbrella review aims to combine the data of systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of music-based intervention in improving uncomfortable symptoms in ICU patients. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed on the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Airiti Library, CINAHL, ProQuest, and Web of Science databases, and Epistemonikos. The search had no language restrictions, and articles on the improvement of symptoms using music-based intervention in adult ICU patients were included. This review protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021240327). Results: This umbrella review retrieved 5 systematic reviews and 41 original studies, including 39 randomized controlled trials, and 2 nonrandomized controlled trials. Diverse music was the most common music type used for music-based intervention, the intervention music was typically decided by the study participants (61%), and most subjects underwent one intervention session (78%). Furthermore, most music intervention sessions lasted for 30 min (44%). The positive results included decreased anxiety, decreased pain, decreased agitation, decreased anesthesia dose and sedative use, decreased chances of delirium, decreased feelings of uncomfort, and improved sleep quality. Conclusions: A systematic review on the effectiveness of music-based intervention in improving uncomfortable symptoms in ICU patients revealed that 20–30 min intervention sessions showed the best improvement in the uncomfortable symptoms in patients. This study provides a basis for using music-based intervention to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms in critically ill ICU patients, and a reference for empirical clinical practice.

    Abstract: Stroke patients presenting with anemia at the time of stroke onset had a higher risk of mortality and development of other cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities. The association between the severity of anemia and the risk of developing a stroke is still uncertain. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the association between stroke incidence and anemia severity (by WHO criteria). A total of 71,787 patients were included, of whom 16,708 (23.27%) were identified as anemic and 55,079 patients were anemia-free. Female patients (62.98%) were more likely to have anemia than males (37.02%). The likelihood of having a stroke within eight years after anemia diagnosis was calculated using Cox proportional hazard regression. Patients with moderate anemia had a significant increase in stroke risk compared to the non-anemia group in univariate analyses (hazard ratios [HR] = 2.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] , 1.97–2.71, p 〈 0.001) and in adjusted HRs (adj-HR = 1.20, 95% CI, 1.02–1.43, p = 0.032). The data reveal that patients with severe anemia received more anemia treatment, such as blood transfusion and nutritional supplementation, and maintaining blood homeostasis may be important to preventing stroke. Anemia is an important risk factor, but other risk factors, including diabetes and hyperlipidemia, also affect stroke development. There is a heightened awareness of anemia’s severity and the increasing risk of stroke development.

    Abstract: Background: Schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment; Second-generation Antipsychotics (SGAs) have become the most prescribed medication for schizophrenia patients. The efficacy of various SGAs treatment may differ in schizophrenia patients with various traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) body constitution (BC) types. Method: This study applied a longitudinal quantitative research design, where a total of 66 participants were recruited. The Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) and the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) score were used to evaluate patients’ psychopathology status in hospitalization, and body constitution questionnaires were conducted by face-to-face interviews in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th week of hospitalization. Results: More than 60% of schizophrenia patients who were treated with SGAs were classified to have unbalanced BC types including Yin-Xu, Yang-Xu and Stasis. Generalized estimating equation analysis revealed significant time effects in CGI and PANSS score improvements in both unbalanced and gentleness (balance) BC types, but no significant changes in the group and group-time interaction in the CGI and PANSS scores in different BC type groups. Conclusions: Schizophrenia patients under SGAs treatment had a higher proportion of unbalanced BC types which may lead to poorer physical or mental statuses, such as overweight problems. Health care providers could apply interventions according to patients’ BC types for disease prevention.
