    Abstract: To clarify the predictive factors of significant platelet count improvement in thrombocytopenic chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients. CHC patients with baseline platelet counts of 〈 150 × 103/μL receiving direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy with at least 12-weeks post-treatment follow-up (PTW12) were enrolled. Significant platelet count improvement was defined as a ≥10% increase in platelet counts at PTW12 from baseline. Platelet count evolution at treatment week 4, end-of-treatment, PTW12, and PTW48 was evaluated. This study included 4922 patients. Sustained virologic response after 12 weeks post-treatment was achieved in 98.7% of patients. Platelet counts from baseline, treatment week 4, and end-of-treatment to PTW12 were 108.8 ± 30.2, 121.9 ± 41.1, 123.1 ± 43.0, and 121.1 ± 40.8 × 103/μL, respectively. Overall, 2230 patients (45.3%) showed significant platelet count improvement. Multivariable analysis revealed that age (odds ratio (OR) = 0.99, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.99–1.00, p = 0.01), diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.06–1.38, p = 0.007), cirrhosis (OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.58–0.75, p 〈 0.0001), baseline platelet counts (OR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.98–0.99, p 〈 0.0001), and baseline total bilirubin level (OR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.71–0.91, p = 0.0003) were independent predictive factors of significant platelet count improvement. Subgroup analyses showed that patients with significant platelet count improvement and sustained virologic responses, regardless of advanced fibrosis, had a significant increase in platelet counts from baseline to treatment week 4, end-of-treatment, PTW12, and PTW48. Young age, presence of DM, absence of cirrhosis, reduced baseline platelet counts, and reduced baseline total bilirubin levels were associated with significant platelet count improvement after DAA therapy in thrombocytopenic CHC patients.

    Abstract: In data clustering, the measured data are usually regarded as uncertain data. As a probability-based clustering technique, possible world can easily cluster the uncertain data. However, the method of possible world needs to satisfy two conditions: determine the data of different possible worlds and determine the corresponding probability of occurrence. The existing methods mostly make multiple measurements and treat each measurement as deterministic data of a possible world. In this paper, a possible world-based fusion estimation model is proposed, which changes the deterministic data into probability distribution according to the estimation algorithm, and the corresponding probability can be confirmed naturally. Further, in the clustering stage, the Kullback–Leibler divergence is introduced to describe the relationships of probability distributions among different possible worlds. Then, an application in wearable body networks (WBNs) is given, and some interesting conclusions are shown. Finally, simulations show better performance when the relationships between features in measured data are more complex.

    Abstract: Ciclesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid used to treat asthma and has been repurposed as a treatment for mildly ill COVID-19 patients, but its precise mechanism of action is unclear. Herein, we report that ciclesonide blocks the coronavirus-induced production of the cytokines IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 by increasing IκBα protein levels and significantly decreasing p65 nuclear translocation. Furthermore, we found that the combination of ciclesonide and dbq33b, a potent tylophorine-based coronavirus inhibitor that affects coronavirus-induced NF-κB activation a little, additively and synergistically decreased coronavirus-induced IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 cytokine levels, and synergistically inhibited the replication of both HCoV-OC43 and SARS-CoV-2. Collectively, the combination of ciclesonide and dbq33b merits consideration as a treatment for COVID-19 patients who may otherwise be overwhelmed by high viral loads and an NF-κB-mediated cytokine storm.

    Abstract: Big data gathered from real systems, such as public infrastructure, healthcare, smart homes, industries, and so on, by sensor networks contain enormous value, and need to be mined deeply, which depends on a data storing and retrieving service. HBase is playing an increasingly important part in the big data environment since it provides a flexible pattern for storing extremely large amounts of unstructured data. Despite the fast-speed reading by RowKey, HBase does not natively support multi-conditional query, which is a common demand and operation in relational databases, especially for data analysis of ubiquitous sensing applications. In this paper, we introduce a method to construct a linear index by employing a Hilbert space-filling curve. As a RowKey generating schema, the proposed method maps multiple index-columns into a one-dimensional encoded sequence, and then constructs a new RowKey. We also provide a R-tree-based optimization to reduce the computational cost of encoding query conditions. Without using a secondary index mode, experimental results indicate that the proposed method has better performance in multi-conditional queries.

    Abstract: Fifth-generation mobile communication networks (5G)/Beyond 5G (B5G) can achieve higher data rates, more significant connectivity, and lower latency to provide various mobile computing service categories, of which enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC) are the three extreme cases. A symmetrically balanced mechanism must be considered in advance to fit the different requirements of such a wide variety of service categories and ensure that the limited resource capacity has been properly allocated. Therefore, a new network service architecture with higher flexibility, dispatchability, and symmetrical adaptivity is demanded. The cloud native architecture that enables service providers to build and run scalable applications/services is highly favored in such a setting, while a symmetrical resource allocation is still preserved. The microservice function in the cloud native architecture can further accelerate the development of various services in a 5G/B5G mobile wireless network. In addition, each microservice part can handle a dedicated service, making overall network management easier. There have been many research and development efforts in the recent literature on topics pertinent to cloud native, such as containerized provisioning, network slicing, and automation. However, there are still some problems and challenges ahead to be addressed. Among them, optimizing resource management for the best performance is fundamentally crucial given the challenge that the resource distribution in the cloud native architecture may need more symmetry. Thus, this paper will survey cloud native mobile computing, focusing on resource management issues of network slicing and containerization.

    Abstract: Federated learning trains a neural network model using the client’s data to maintain the benefits of centralized model training while maintaining their privacy. However, if the client data are not independently and identically distributed (non-IID) because of different environments, the accuracy of the model may suffer from client drift during training owing to discrepancies in each client’s data. This study proposes a personalized federated learning algorithm based on the concept of multitask learning to divide each client model into two layers: a feature extraction layer and a category prediction layer. The feature extraction layer maps the input data to a low-dimensional feature vector space. Furthermore, the parameters of the neural network are aggregated with those of other clients using an adaptive method. The category prediction layer maps low-dimensional feature vectors to the label sample space, with its parameters remaining unaffected by other clients to maintain client uniqueness. The proposed personalized federated learning method produces faster learning model convergence rates and higher accuracy rates for the non-IID datasets in our experiments.

    Abstract: Software-Defined Networking (SDN) systems are sensitive to the lifespans of flow entries in flow tables as such lifespans affect the overall network-forwarding latency and the flow table space usage, particularly when the systems are under cyber attack. Instead of developing extra approaches to reactively detect the attacks and mitigate the impact of the attacks, this paper views the lifespans of flow entries as the privacy of the SDN systems and proposes a Flow-Entry Aging RandOmization Layer (FEAROL), which applies the staircase randomized response mechanism in the flow-entry-aging process at switches. FEAROL locally perturbs the lifespan of each flow entry in the flow table. Since the true lifespan of each flow entry is different from the lifespan set in the entry by the controller and dynamically perturbed by FEAROL, Low-rate Denial-of-Service (LDoS) attacks based on the sniffed flow-entry timeouts cannot be effectively organized. FEAROL proactively prevents LDoS attacks from overflowing the flow tables and legitimate flow packets from being dropped due to the broken synchronization between attack flows and the network settings. FEAROL can adjust its aging policies and privacy budget based on the real-time monitored network performance. FEAROL is prototyped in an open-source soft switch (OpenVSwitch) and evaluated through simulations on real network traces. The results show that FEAROL increases the overhead of aging a flow entry. However, this overhead can be significantly reduced by adjusting the interval at which the aging process is triggered. FEAROL also effectively defends against flow table overflow LDoS attacks by significantly reducing the table usage of LDoS attack flows. When the aging strategy is carefully chosen, the table space used by attack flow entries can be reduced to 0.
