    Abstract: Rice lodging seriously affects rice quality and production. Traditional manual methods of detecting rice lodging are labour-intensive and can result in delayed action, leading to production loss. With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide imminent assistance for crop stress monitoring. In this paper, we proposed a novel lightweight detection system with UAVs for rice lodging. We leverage UAVs to acquire the distribution of rice growth, and then our proposed global attention network (GloAN) utilizes the acquisition to detect the lodging areas efficiently and accurately. Our methods aim to accelerate the processing of diagnosis and reduce production loss caused by lodging. The experimental results show that our GloAN can lead to a significant increase in accuracy with negligible computational costs. We further tested the generalization ability of our GloAN and the results show that the GloAN generalizes well in peers’ models (Xception, VGG, ResNet, and MobileNetV2) with knowledge distillation and obtains the optimal mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 92.85%. The experimental results show the flexibility of GloAN in rice lodging detection.

    Abstract: With the rapid development of GPS-equipped smart mobile devices and mobile computing, location-based services (LBS) are increasing in popularity in the Internet of Things (IoT). Although LBS provide enormous benefits to users, they inevitably introduce some significant privacy concerns. To protect user privacy, a variety of location privacy-preserving schemes have been recently proposed. Among these schemes, the dummy-based location privacy-preserving (DLP) scheme is a widely used approach to achieve location privacy for mobile users. However, the computation cost of the existing dummy-based location privacy-preserving schemes is too high to meet the practical requirements of resource-constrained IoT devices. Moreover, the DLP scheme is inadequate to resist against an adversary with side information. Thus, how to effectively select a dummy location is still a challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel lightweight dummy-based location privacy-preserving scheme, named the enhanced dummy-based location privacy-preserving(Enhanced-DLP) to address this challenge by considering both computational costs and side information. Specifically, the Enhanced-DLP adopts an improved greedy scheme to efficiently select dummy locations to form a k-anonymous set. A thorough security analysis demonstrated that our proposed Enhanced-DLP can protect user privacy against attacks. We performed a series of experiments to verify the effectiveness of our Enhanced-DLP. Compared with the existing scheme, the Enhanced-DLP can obtain lower computational costs for the selection of a dummy location and it can resist side information attacks. The experimental results illustrate that the Enhanced-DLP scheme can effectively be applied to protect the user’s location privacy in IoT applications and services.

    Abstract: The calibrator is one of the most important factors in the calibration of various laser 3D scanning instruments. The requirements for the diffuse reflection surface are emphasized in many national standards. In this study, spherical calibrator and plane calibrator comparative measurement experiments were carried out. The black ceramic standard sphere, white ceramic standard sphere, metal standard sphere, metal standard plane, and white ceramic standard plane were used to test the laser 3D scanner. In the spherical calibrator comparative measurement experiments, the results indicate that the RMS of the white ceramic spherical calibrator with a reflectance of approximately 60% is 10 times that of the metal spherical calibrator with the reflectance of approximately 15%, and the RMS of the black ceramic spherical calibrator with reflectance of approximately 11% is of the same order as the metal spherical calibrator. In the plane calibrators comparative measurement experiments, the RMS of the flatness measurement is 0.077 mm for the metal plane calibrator with a reflectance of 15%, and 2.915 mm for ceramic plane calibrator with a reflectance of 60%. The results show that when the optimal measurement distance and incident angle are selected, the reflectance of the calibrator has a great effect on the measurement results, regardless of the outlines or profiles. Based on the experiments, it is recommended to use the spherical calibrator or the standard plane with a reflectance of around 18% as the standard, which can obtain reasonable results. In addition, it is necessary to clearly provide the material category and surface reflectance information of the standard when calibrating the scanner according to the measurement standard.

    Abstract: Groundwater serving as a drinking water resource usually contains manganese ions (Mn2+) that exceed drinking standards. Based on the Mn biogeochemical cycle at the hydrosphere scale, bioprocesses consisting of aeration, biofiltration, and disinfection are well known as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly ecotechnology for removing Mn2+. The design of aeration and biofiltration units, which are critical components, is significantly influenced by coexisting iron and ammonia in groundwater; however, there is no unified standard for optimizing bioprocess operation. In addition to the groundwater purification, it was also found that manganese-oxidizing bacteria (MnOB)-derived biogenic Mn oxides (bioMnOx), a by-product, have a low crystallinity and a relatively high specific surface area; the MnOB supplied with Mn2+ can be developed for contaminated water remediation. As a result, according to previous studies, this paper summarized and provided operational suggestions for the removal of Mn2+ from groundwater. This review also anticipated challenges and future concerns, as well as opportunities for bioMnOx applications. These could improve our understanding of the MnOB group and its practical applications.

    Abstract: In the food industry, microbiological safety is a major concern. Mycotoxin patulin represents a potential health hazard, as it is heat-resistant and may develop at any stage during the food chain, especially in apple-based products, leading to severe effects on human health, poor quality products, and profit reductions. The target of the study was to identify and characterize an excellent adsorbent to remove patulin from apple juice efficiently and to assess its adsorption mechanism. To prevent juice fermentation and/or contamination, autoclaving was involved to inactivate bacteria before the adsorption process. The HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) outcome proved that all isolated strains from kefir grains could reduce patulin from apple juice. A high removal of 93% was found for juice having a 4.6 pH, 15° Brix, and patulin concentration of 100 μg/L by Lactobacillus kefiranofacien, named JKSP109, which was morphologically the smoothest and biggest of all isolates in terms of cell wall volume and surface area characterized by SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy). C=O, OH, C–H, and N–O were the main functional groups engaged in patulin adsorption indicated by FTIR (Fourier transform–infrared). E-nose (electronic nose) was performed to evaluate the aroma quality of the juices. PCA (Principal component analysis) results showed that no significant changes occurred between control and treated juice.

    Abstract: In this paper, the fatigue resistance of superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) wires was improved by combining mechanical training and nanocrystallization. Fatigue tests were performed after mechanical training with a peak stress of 600 MPa for 60 cycles of nanocrystalline (NC) NiTi wires, and the associated microscopic mechanism was investigated by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD). The results showed that stress-controlled training effectively improved the functional stability (the accumulated residual strain decreased by 83.8% in the first 5000 cycles) of NC NiTi SMA wires, as well as increased the average structural fatigue life by 187.4% (from 4538 cycles to 13,040 cycles). TEM observations and TKD results revealed that training-induced dislocations resulted in lattice rotation and preferential grain orientation. The finite element method (FEM) simulation results indicated that the training-induced preferential grain orientation tended to decrease the local stress concentration and strain energy density. Combined with fractography analysis, the uniform deformation caused by mechanical training changed the crack growth mode from multi-regional propagation to single-regional propagation, improving the structural fatigue life.
