    Abstract: This paper presents the on-site monitoring of a medium–long highway tunnel constructed above a goaf of a multi-layer coal seam, in order to evaluate and maintain safety during operation. The case study of the Tianzimiao medium–long highway tunnel in Shanxi province was conducted above a goaf of a multi-layer coal seam with typical geological and engineering conditions in China, where a total of four coal seams (seam no. 3, 8, 12, and 15) were mined out with a total thickness of up to 11 m. Methods including data collection, engineering geological survey, drilling, geophysical prospecting, testing, and on-site monitoring were adopted, and a geo-mechanical model was established to conduct the research. Stratified monitoring was applied to investigate the individual settlement and deformation of the four layers of the goaf below, and a prediction of the possible deformation in tunnel floor ground was made based on the stratified measurements. The settlement of the tunnel sidewall, the internal stress in the fractured zone of the surrounding rock, and the deformation above the tunnel entrance were also monitored, and the monitoring data were compared with the numerical simulation results for the safety evaluation of the tunnel. The results show that the current tunnel deformation values and trend are both within the safety scope of the evaluation and prediction. The stability evaluation method for the multi-layer goaf used in this paper and the long-term on-site monitoring and timely feedback during operation is helpful to ensure the safe use of the tunnels above the goaves of multi-layer thick coal seams.

    Abstract: The path of crack propagation in a graphene sheet is significant for graphene patterning via the tearing approach. In this study, we evaluate the fracture properties of pre-cracked graphene during the tearing process, with consideration of the effects of the aspect ratio, loading speed, loading direction, and ambient temperatures on the crack propagation in the monolayer sheet. Some remarkable conclusions are drawn based on the molecular dynamic simulation results, i.e., a higher loading speed may result in a complicated path of crack propagation, and the propagation of an armchair crack may be accompanied by sp carbon links at high temperatures. The reason for this is that the stronger thermal vibration reduces the load stress difference near the crack tip and, therefore, the crack tip can pass through the sp link. A crack propagates more easily along the zigzag direction than along the armchair direction. The out-of-plane tearing is more suitable than the in-plane tearing for graphene patterning. The path of crack propagation can be adjusted by changing the loading direction, e.g., a rectangular graphene ribbon can be produced by oblique tearing. This new understanding will benefit the application of graphene patterning via the tearing approach.

    Abstract: Concentric circular antenna arrays (CCAAs) can obtain better performance than other antenna arrays. However, high overhead and excessive sidelobes still make its application difficult. In this paper, we consider the sparse synthesis optimization of CCAAs. Specifically, we aim to turn off a specific number of antennas while reducing the sidelobe of CCAAs. First, we formulate an optimization problem and present the solution space. Then, we propose a novel evolutionary method for solving the optimization problem. Our proposed method introduces hybrid solution initialization, hybrid crossover method, and hybrid update methods. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the proposed improvement factors.

    Abstract: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) are increasingly recognized as an urgent public health concern. The rapid and accurate identification of carbapenemases could provide insights into antimicrobial therapy and infection control. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of three different methods, including the NG-test Carba 5, colloidal gold immunoassay (CGI) test, and Xpert Carba-R assay, for the rapid detection of five carbapenemases (KPC, NDM, IMP, OXA-48, and VIM). A total of 207 Gram-negative strains collected from patients and hospital sewages were tested. The presence or absence of carbapenemase genes in the whole-genome sequences was used as the gold standard for evaluating the accuracy of the above-mentioned three methods. Among the 192 strains carrying only one carbapenemase gene, the accuracies of the NG-Test Carba 5, CGI test, and Xpert Carba-R were 96.88% (95% CI, 93.01–98.72%), 96.88% (95% CI, 93.01–98.72%), and 97.92% (95% CI, 94.41–99.33%), respectively. Xpert Carba-R was able to detect all 13 types of KPC variants, including KPC-2, KPC-3, KPC-25, KPC-33, KPC-35, KPC-51, KPC-52, KPC-71, KPC-76, KPC-77, KPC-78, KPC-93, and KPC-123, with a detection sensitivity of 100.00% (95% CI, 96.50–100.00%), a specificity of 100.00% (95% CI, 92.38–100.00%), and a κ index of 1.00. For IMP, Carba 5 was superior to the other two methods, with a sensitivity of 100% (95% CI, 71.66–100.00%), a specificity of 100% (95% CI, 97.38–100.00%), and a κ index of 1.00. For the remaining 15 strains carrying two or three kinds of carbapenemase genes, Carba 5 performed the best, which accurately identified all the target genes, followed by Xpert Carba-R (12/15, 80.00%) and the CGI test (10/15, 66.67%). Therefore, all three assays demonstrated reliable performances in carbapenemase detection, and Xpert Carba-R should be recommended for the detection of KPC variants, especially for patients at a high risk of infections caused by ceftazidime/avibactam-resistant strains. IMPORTANCE: CRE was listed as one of the top three pathogens that are in critical need of new antibiotics by the WHO. The rapid and accurate identification of carbapenemases is important for antimicrobial therapy and infection control. In recent years, new beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations such as ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to cope with CRE challenges. CZA was effective against class A, class C, and some class D enzymes such as OXA-48-like. However, CZA-resistant KPC variants emerged at an alarming speed, which posed a new challenge for the accurate identification of KPC variants. In this study, we evaluated the performance of two lateral flow immunochromatographic assays, namely, NG-test Carba 5 and the CGI test, and the automated real-time quantitative PCR Xpert Carba-R in the rapid detection of carbapenemases. Notably, 13 types of KPC variants were enrolled in this study, which covered most KPC variants discovered in China. Carba-R was superior to NG-teat Carba 5 and the CGI test; it was able to detect all of the included KPC variants, including KPC-2, KPC-3, KPC-25, KPC-33, KPC-35, KPC-51, KPC-52, KPC-71, KPC-76, KPC-77, KPC-78, KPC-93, and KPC-123.

    Abstract: Plant viruses and entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) can both elicit immune responses in insects. This study was designed to clarify whether plant viruses could affect the efficacy of EPF and explore the immune responses of brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, in response to different pathogen infections. In this study, a strain of Metarhizium anisopliae YTTR with high pathogenicity against BPH was selected and explored whether rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) could affect its lethality against BPH. RNA-seq was used to detect the inner responses of BPH in response to RRSV and M. anisopliae YTTR infection. Results showed that M. anisopliae YTTR has strong lethality against BPH (RRSV-carrying and RRSV-free). RRSV invasion did not affect the susceptibility of BPH against M. anisopliae YTTR at all concentrations. At 1 × 108 spores/mL, M. anisopliae YTTR caused a cumulative mortality of 80% to BPH at 7 days post-treatment. The largest numbers of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was obtained in BPH treated with the two pathogens than in other single pathogen treatment. In addition, KEGG enrichment analysis showed that the DEGs were mostly enriched in immune and physiological mechanisms-related pathways. Both RRSV and M. anisopliae YTTR could induce the expression changes of immune-related genes. However, most of the immune genes had varying expression patterns in different treatment. Our findings demonstrated that RRSV invasion did not have any significant effect on the pathogenicity of M. anisopliae YTTR, while the co-infection of M. anisopliae YTTR and RRSV induced more immune and physiological mechanisms -related genes’ responses. In addition, the presence of RRSV could render the interplay between BPH and M. anisopliae YTTR more intricate. These findings laid a basis for further elucidating the immune response mechanisms of RRSV-mediated BPH to M. anisopliae infection.

    Abstract: In this study, three mesoporous-activated crab shell biochars were prepared by carbonation and chemical activation with KOH (K−CSB), H3PO4 (P−CSB), and KMnO4 (M−CSB) to evaluate their tetracycline (TC) adsorption capacities. Characterization by SEM and a porosity analysis revealed that the K−CSB, P−CSB, and M−CSB possessed a puffy, mesoporous structure, with K−CSB exhibiting a larger specific surface area (1738 m2/g). FT-IR analysis revealed that abundant, surface ox-containing functional groups possessed by K−CSB, P−CSB, and M−CSB, such as −OH, C−O, and C=O, enhanced adsorption for TC, thereby enhancing their adsorption efficiency for TC. The maximum TC adsorption capacities of the K−CSB, P−CSB, and M−CSB were 380.92, 331.53, and 281.38 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics data of the three TC adsorbents fit the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption mechanism involved aperture filling, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic action, π-π EDA action, and complexation. As a low-cost and highly effective adsorbent for antibiotic wastewater treatment, activated crab shell biochar has enormous application potential.

    Abstract: A series of Yttrium (Y)-doped Bi2MoO6 composites with calcined mussel shell powder (CMS) as supports were synthesized using a solvothermal method. The as-prepared samples were analyzed using multiple techniques to investigate their microscopic morphology, composition structure, and optical properties. The photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared samples was assessed via examining their capacity to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation. The photocatalytic data showed that the Y-doped Bi2MoO6/CMS composites exhibited better photocatalytic activity compared to pure Bi2MoO6 and undoped Bi2MoO6/CMS samples. Among the samples, the 0.5%Y-doped Bi2MoO6/CMS (0.5%Y-BC) showed the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving a maximum degradation rate of 99.7% within 60 min. This could be attributed to highly reactive sites due to Y doping, a narrower band gap, and a lower recombination rate of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. Additionally, the 0.5%Y-BC photocatalyst exhibited excellent stability and reusability properties even after four cycles, making it suitable for practical applications. The findings provided a feasible synthesis of nanocomposite photocatalysts with outstanding properties for organic pollutant removal from the solution system.

    Abstract: Spartina alterniflora is an invasive plant from coastal wetlands, and its use in applications has garnered much interest. In this study, a composite photocatalyst (ZnO@BC) was synthesized by preparing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with S. alterniflora extracts, S. alterniflora, and one-step carbonization, which was characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm. The degradation capacity and mechanism of malachite green (MG) using ZnO@BC were analyzed under visible irradiation, and the degradation products of malachite green were detected by LC–MS. The results show that ZnO@BC has a larger surface area (83.2 m2/g) and various reactive groups, which enhance its photocatalytic efficiency, with the presence of oxygen vacancy further improving the photocatalytic activity. The total removal rate of malachite green (400 mg/L) using ZnO@BC is up to 98.38%. From the LC–MS analysis, it could be concluded that malachite green is degraded by demethylation, deamination, conjugate structure and benzene ring structure destruction. This study provides a novel idea for the high-value utilization of S. alterniflora.
