    Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of milk thistle supplementation of fattener pig feeds on physical and chemical properties of pork offal. The experiments were conducted on 60 fatteners (group C—control (30 pigs) and group E—experimental (30 pigs)). The experimental group was supplemented with ground milk thistle (Silybum marianum) at 7 g/kg feed. The offal (tongues, kidneys, hearts, lungs and livers) was analyzed for weight, pH, WHC, water, protein, fat, energy value, fatty acid profile and content of major and trace elements. The present study shows that milk thistle added to fattener pig diets increased pH45 and pH24 values in most of the analyzed offal and significantly (p ≤ 0.01) decreased the weight of heart and lungs and increased the weight of liver and kidneys. Hearts, lungs and kidneys of the experimental group contained more fat and the liver less, than the same offal of the control group. As regards the content of elements, the dietary supplement most often had an effect on the heart and lungs. In general, milk thistle supplemented in fattener diets had modified the physical parameters and chemical composition of the analyzed products.

    Abstract: Cytogenetic monitoring allows the identification and early removal of pigs affected by inherited karyotype defects from breeding herds. These abnormalities cause developmental anomalies, considerably reducing the fertility (by several dozen to 100%) and performance parameters of breeding herds, resulting in substantial financial losses. This mainly concerns reciprocal translocations, typical of pigs, which are highly prevalent (about 0.46%), generally occur de novo, and normally result in low breeding soundness of the carriers. Due to the potential spontaneous occurrence of chromosomal aberrations and the rapid spread of these genetic defects in the population, especially under artificial insemination conditions, it is necessary to perform routine karyotype screening of animals qualified for reproduction. The cytogenetic screening program for young boars, carried out using continually refined diagnostic techniques, permits a precise and reliable karyotype assessment, identification of chromosomal abnormalities, and formulation of specific selection guidelines.

    Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine technological and consumption quality of some offal components obtained from Pulawska and Polish Landrace fattening pigs, and to analyse the eating quality of the offal products. The study material consisted of 100 fattening pigs: Pulawska (PUL) and 50 Polish Landrace (PL) pigs. The offal components were analysed for physical traits, chemical composition and energy value. Offal products were made from the offal and their physical, chemical and organoleptic parameters were evaluated. Our study showed that breed had a significant effect (p ≤ 0.05) on pH45 of the tongue, heart (PUL 〉 PL), lungs and kidneys (PUL 〈 PL), and on the fat content of the tongue, heart (PUL 〉 PL), liver and kidneys (PUL 〈 PL). A highly significant effect of breed (p ≤ 0.01) was observed for protein content of the lungs, liver (PUL 〈 PL) and kidneys (PUL 〉 PL), for collagen content of the kidneys (PUL 〈 PL) and liver (PUL 〈 PL), and for energy value (p ≤ 0.01) of the heart (PUL 〉 PL) and liver (PUL 〈 PL). Moreover, our results indicate that the organoleptic quality of the evaluated offal products was higher for Pulawska than Polish Landrace pigs, in particular with regard to consistency (p 〈 0.05) and flavour (p 〈 0.01) of the liver sausage.

    Abstract: We analyzed clinical experience with percutaneous closure of instances of left atrial appendage with thrombus (LAAT) irresponsive to antithrombotic therapy in patients treated in three high-volume cardiology centers. Clinical and procedural data regarding consecutive patients who underwent percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (PLAAC) due to LAAT were retrospectively analyzed. The study population consisted of 17 patients (11 men; 68 ± 14 years; CHA2DS2VASC 4.7 ± 1.9; HASBLED 3 (0–5)) with LAAT confirmed by transesophageal echocardiography, and included 5 patients with mechanical heart valves. Most of the patients (94.1%) received anticoagulation therapy before PLAAC. All LAATs were located in distal portions of the appendage and occupied less than 30% of its volume. Occluding-device implantation was successful in 17 patients; in one, a residual leak was disclosed. Appropriate positioning of occluders required more than 1 attempt in 6 individuals (35.3%); in 3 others (17.6%), the subjects’ devices had contact with thrombi. No procedural complications were noted. Midterm follow-up (median: 10 months) revealed no procedure-related complications or clinically diagnosed thromboembolism. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) performed after six months revealed device-related thrombus in one patient. We concluded that LAAT irresponsive to antithrombotic therapy might be effectively treated with PLAAC, even in patients with mechanical-valve prostheses.
