Notes: An increasingly common and effective method for the treatment of atherosclerotic disease in the coronary arteries is percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and stenting. The stents are made of different metals. An increased rate of restenosis when using gold-plated stents has been shown. Contact allergy to gold is common in many countries. Recently, a study has shown an increased rate of contact allergy to nickel among patients with restenosis and a nickel-containing stent. The aims of our study were to investigate whether there was an increased rate of contact allergy to gold among patients with gold-plated stents and if this increased the risk of restenosis. 22 patients who had received a gold-plated stent were patch tested. An age- and sex-matched population of 88 patients, previously patch tested because of a suspected contact dermatitis, served as controls. In the stent group, 10/22 (45.5%) had a contact allergy to gold, in the control group 18/88 (20.5%); the difference is statistically significant (P = 0.04). There was no significant difference regarding frequency of restenosis. Our study indicates that there is a risk of sensitizing the patient when implanting a gold-plated stent. Further studies are needed to confirm these results and to evaluate whether there is an increased risk of restenosis.

Notes: Light microscopic studies have shown that nevus cell nests and melanoma nests are surrounded by basement membrane (BM) material containing type IV collagen and laminin. This study confirms this by electron microscopy and relates it to proteins which interact with the basement membrane. Nevi except for dysplastic and Spitz nevi, malignant melanomas, and melanoma metastases were studied by immunohistopathology, routine electron microscopy (EM), and immunoelectron microscopy. The lesions were incubated with monoclonal antibody (moAb) against type IV collagen, laminin, and the integrin α6 and studied by light microscopy. In addition, melanomas were studied by immuno-EM after incubation with a moAb against matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2). Nevus cell nests and melanoma nests are surrounded by BM material containing type IV collagen and laminin by immuno-EM. The BM material various in thickness and is amorphous. Type IV collagen, laminin, and MMP-2 are synthesized by melanoma cells as well as adjacent fibroblasts. Destruction or loss of the BM is not mandatory for melanoma invasion or even metastasis. Possibly the BM material is a protective wall for melanoma cells. Interactions between melanocytes and the extracellular matrix of which the BM is a part, can be traced back to the migration of melanocytes from the neural crest.

Notes: Abstract The macrobenthic fauna associated withFucus at a station in the Kiel Fjord was investigated from June 1978 until June 1979. The predominant group in number as well as in biomass were gammarids. They formed, together with the isopodsIdotea spp., approximately 95 % of the total average annual biomass. The total dry weight of all macrobenthic animals (excl.Littorina spp.) increased from 1.9 g per kgFucus in May to about 16 g in June–August, and dropped to 8.3 g in September. Winter average dry weight values were only about 6 % of the summer values.

Notes: Abstract Following evaluation of 634 aerial photographs, the dead marine plant biomass on the western Baltic Sea shores between Flensburg and Neustadt (Federal Republic of Germany) was estimated to be 300 t dry weight in August 1977. On the average, a belt of 0,9 m width was covered by dead marine plant material. Main constituents wereFucus vesiculosus L. andZostera marina L. The impact of the hydrographical conditions on the quantity of plants washed ashore is discussed.

Notes: Abstract As part of a survey on population dynamics and ecology of fishesin the Elbe River, seasonal and regional fluctuations of external fish diseases were studied from the open North Sea to Hamburg in 1981–1982. Clinical signs of 11 different diseases, several of them not being recorded before, were noted in 22 fish species. Averaged over all samples, the total disease prevalence was below 1 % in 16 species. Highest prevalences were found in smelt (12.7 %), eel (9.2 %), and flounder (5.5 %). The frequency of most diseases increased in larger (older) fish. High prevalences of skeletal abnormalities in cod could be related to abnormal migration habits of diseased fish. Spawning papillomatosis, skin ulceration, and fin rot in smelt occurred predominantly during the spawning season. Most diseases observed occurred at relatively high prevalences in the central Elbe estuary between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel. This is most obvious for lymphocystis, fin rot, skin ulceration, and bleaching syndrome in flounder, but such a tendency also seems to occur in cauliflower disease of eel, as well as spawning papillomatosis and pharyngeal granuloma in smelt. This area is less heavily polluted and less frequently affected by oxygen deficiency than the area upstream of Glückstadt, where diseases in general occurred at lower frequencies. Therefore, it is concluded that neither pollution nor lack of oxygen are the main triggers for the outbreak of diseases in Elbe fish. It is supposed that large tidal fluctuations of salinity are a major stress factor for fish in the estuary between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel. Flounder from this area usually are in a relatively bad nutritional state. Their condition factor increases significantly towards Hamburg, while their disease prevalence decreases in the same direction.

Notes: Abstract The H-basis concept allows, similarly to the Gröbner basis concept, a reformulation of nonlinear problems in terms of linear algebra. We exhibit parallels of the two concepts, show properties of H-bases, discuss their construction and uniqueness questions, and prove that n polynomials in n variables are, under mild conditions, already H-bases. We apply H-bases to the solution of polynomial systems by the eigenmethod and to multivariate interpolation.

Notes: Abstract Using recoilless gamma resonance absorption of the 23.8 keV transition of Sn119 we have measured the isomer shift as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to 100 kbar. The tin isotope was introduced into the substances SnMg2, metallic tin, Pd(12 wgt.% Sn), Sn (SO4)2·2H2O, and SnAu. Except for SnMg2, all compounds exhibit a linear relation between isomer shift and pressure, which reflects a decrease of ¦ ψ(0)¦2, the probability density of the electrons at the nuclear site, with increasing pressure. This decrease is interpreted by a volume-dependent screening of the 5s electrons by the 5p electrons. The non-linear dependence of the isomer shift upon pressure in the case of SnMg2 is interpreted in terms of the superposition of two counteracting effects, with band repopulation and electronic shielding effects prevailing in the low and high pressure branches, respectively. Measurements of the pressure dependence of both the electrical resistivity and the lattice structure of SnMg2 lead to a picture, which resulted in a calculation of the pressure dependence of the isomer shift, which is in agreement with the experimental observations.

Notes: ABSTRACT Alois Alzheimer published two papers on the disease which was named after him by Emil Kraepelin in 1910. Each of these papers contains clinical and pathological data on a patient Alzheimer had seen at the hospital. We have previously reported on the rediscovery of tissue sections from Alzheimer's second published case of Alzheimer disease, Johann F., which probably gave the disease its name (Neurogenetics 1997; 1 : 73–80). Here, we describe the histopathology and APOE genotype of Alois Alzheimer's first patient, Auguste D. As in the case of Johann F., a large number of tissue sections belonging to Alzheimer's laboratory, which was later headed by Spielmeyer, were found among material kept at the Institute of Neuropathology of the University of Munich. As described by Alzheimer in his original report (Allg Zeitschr Psychiatr 1907; 64 : 146–148), there were numerous neurofibrillary tangles and many amyloid plaques, especially in the upper cortical layers of this patient. Yet, there was no microscopic evidence for vascular, i.e., arteriosclerotic, lesions. Interestingly, Alzheimer's histological preparations did not include the hippocampus or entorhinal region. The APOE genotype of this patient was shown to be ε3/ε3 by PCR-based restriction enzyme analysis, indicating that mutational screening of the tissue is feasible. The historical importance of the case of Auguste D. lies in the fact that it marks the beginning of research into Alzheimer disease. In addition, neurofibrillary tangles were first described in this brain.
