Abstract: Introduction: Currently, Vietnam is entering the aging population stage and is one of the fastest aging countries worldwide. Old age increases the risk of chronic diseases, particularly mental health disorders. Objective: investigated the prevalence of depression and examined the associated factors with depression among older people. Methods: A cross-sectional study was implemented in 760 older people in some communities of Thua Thien Hue province from January to August 2020. Data were collected by directinterviewing based on a structured questionnaire, including demographic, socio-economic, geriatric Depression scale with 30 questions (GDS-30), health status and physical activities. The GDS-30 was used to evaluate the prevalence of depression. The multiple logistic regression model was applied to exam the associated factors with depression. Results: Our findings indicated that the prevalence of depression among elderly people was 28.6%, comprising mild (23.6%) and seveve (5%). The higher Odds of depression was observed in the low economic status (poor/near-poor) (OR= 2.51; 95% CI: 1.15 – 5.48), live alone (OR= 2.43; 95% CI: 1.02-5.78), co-morbidities chronic disease(OR =1,59; 95% CI: 1.01 – 2.52), self-evaluation not good in overall health status (OR =2.34; 95% CI: 1,50 – 3,66), dissatisfaction in health (OR = 2.55; 95% CI:1.59 – 4.08), lack of physical activities (OR =2.79; 95% CI: 1.83 - 4.27), and low quality of life (OR = 2.79; 95% CI: 1.84-4.24). Conclusions: This research suggests that older people are commonly exposing to depression in the communities. Therefore, the priority strategies for reducing depression should be implemented, particularly in the high-risk groups.

Abstract: Introduction: Lower respiratory infections caused by respiratory viruses have played an important role in morbility and mortality in young children. Identification of viral etiologies has not been done in poor countries due to the lack of laboratory facilities for viral diagnosis. This study was to determine viral etiologies in children hospitalized with lower respiratory infections. Patients and methods: Nasal pharyngeal swabs or throat swabs were collected from 216 children hospitalized clinically with lower respiratory infections and processed for viral identification by RT-PCR and PCR. Results: Viral respiratory infections were detected in 91 children (42%) with 107 respiratory viruses, majority of infected children were younger than 5 years of age. among them 76 children (84%) have single infection and 15 children (16%) have co-infections of 2 or 3 viruses. The most common respiratory virus was influenza A virus with 41 cases (45%), followed by RSV with 38 cases (42%), adenovirus in 11 cases (12%), influenza B virus in 7 (8%) and parainfluenza virus type 1 and 3 in 5 cases (5%) each. RSV infections were found in several months, whereas, influenza virus infections were found in high numbers in rainy and cold months from October of 2010 to February of following year, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was the predominant subtype of influenza A virus. Conclusion: Respiratory viruses were found with the high rate in children hospitalized with lower respiratory infections; the common viruses detected were influenza A(H1N1) pdm09 virus and RSV. Key words: influenza, RSV, lower respiratory infections

Abstract: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy becomes standard technique for management symptomatic cholelithiasis, polype. The risk of bile duct injury following laparoscopic cholecystectomy is higher than open cholecystectomy. Purpose: To diagnosis the type of injury bile duct and management bile duct injuries sustained by laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Patients and Methods: Retrospective analyses of the patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy from 01/1999 to 06/2020. We evaluated the data according to outcome measures, characteristics and treatment results of major bile duct injuries after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Results: We found 21 patients with major bile duct injuries sustained by laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Only 23.8% of injuries are recognized during operation. Type of injuries include: Lateral injury of common bilde duct were 4 cases, transection of bile duct were 4 cases. Management injuries include: bile duct suture were 4 cases (19.1%), hepaticojejunostomy were 10 cases (47.6%), choledochojejunostomy were 6 cases (28.5%). Conclusion: Common bile duct injury is a rare complication of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (0.35%). Immediate recognition and repair are associated with improved outcome. The optimal management depends on the timing of recognition of injury, the type, extent of bile duct injury, the patient’s conditions and the availability of experienced hepatobiliary surgeons.

Abstract: Introduction: Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair frequently is performed with mechanical fixation of a flat polypropylene mesh. Mechanical fixation is associated with pain syndromes and mesh migration may occur without fixation of flat protheses. An anatomically contoured mesh 3D-Max (3DMAX Mesh/Bard-Davol, France) using no fixation would avoid these problems. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness and safeness of laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) hernia repair with nonfixation of three-dimensional mesh. Materials and methods: A prospective analysis of patients, admitted for groin hernia type direct and operated by laparoscopic TEP hernia repair with nonfixation of 3D mesh (3DMAX Mesh), performed between June 2010 and June 2015. Data were collected regarding general characteristics, complication rates, length of hospital stay and the recurrence rate postoperative of this method. Results: 36 patients/42 hernias type direct underwent laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) repair with nonfixation of 3D mesh. The results show with an average age of 59,5±13,2 years (range 36–85 years); peritoneal laceration was noticed during dissection in 7,1%, there was no injury of the inferior epigastric vessels during dissection. Unilateral hernia had an operative time of 54,5±18,1 minutes (range 30–115 minutes), bilateral hernia was 88,3±24,6 (range 65-120 minutes). All of these patients in the study were controlled with 2,4% had pain post-op at 3 months follow-up postoperative, but at 12 months and 24 months follow-up, there were no complication, no recurrences. Conclusions: The laparoscopic (TEP) repair of inguinal hernia with nonfixation of three-dimensional mesh is safe and effective. Keywords: groin hernia – TEP hernioplasty - laparoscopy

Abstract: Background: The genus Alpinia is one of the diverse genera in Thua Thien Hue province, in which many species have been used as medicine. But until now, studies on A. vietnamica have rarely been reported. Objectives: The present study was aimed at the determination of microscopic characteristics and chemical compositions as well as evaluating the antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities of A. vietnamica. Materials and methods: A. vietnamica was collected in Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province. Anatomic structures and powder properties were determined by the microscopic method. Phytochemical screening was conducted by specific chemical reactions. The Folin-Ciocalteau method and the aluminum chloride-flavonoid assay, respectively, were used to quantify the total polyphenol (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC). Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH assay, while acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity was evaluated using the Ellman method. Results: The microscopic characteristics of this species have been described. Phytochemical analysis results revealed the presence of flavonoids, coumarins, and tannins in A. vietnamica. The ethanol extract from the aerial part of A. vietnamica had higher polyphenol and flavonoid contents than the underground part extract. Moreover, this extract also displayed a stronger DPPH radical scavenging and exhibited AChE inhibitory activities. Conclusion: This is the first report on the microscopic characteristics, chemical compositions, and biological activities of A. vietnamica.
