Abstract: The success of a language class does not simply depend on the students’ achievement of learning outcomes. However, this is mostly expected by educators who advocate applying outcome-based education. Indeed, it is how the teacher and the students within a class can create an environment where active learning is of greater importance. This paper discusses the results of a case study at a selected faculty. The data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 12 full-time teachers and staff and surveyed responses from 233 students taking an English undergraduate honors program at a selected public university in Ho Chi Minh City. This case study aims to analyze difficulties students and teachers encounter in building an active learning environment for a program. It also aims to identify the roles of teachers and students in doing so. As found in the study, major difficulties in building an active learning environment include the fixed curriculum, large class size, students’ low autonomy, limited learning resources, and the wide gap between teachers’ teaching activities and students’ expectations. In order to successfully create an active learning environment at Vietnamese universities, it is suggested that teachers should be more reasonably flexible, open-minded, and helpful throughout the teaching process, while students are expected to be more critical, self-directed, and disciplined in learning. Several major pedagogical implications for both teachers and students are also well elaborated.

Abstract: As a major aspect of internationalization, international academic mobility has been among the most discussed issues in higher education worldwide in recent years. However, while more and more institutions in many countries show substantial interest in implementing international academic mobility programs, the practices seem to be surprisingly in slow progress in Vietnam higher education . The current study, therefore, aims to fill up the gap by exploring the reality of implementing international academic mobility programs and surveying students’ readiness as well as expectations for international academic mobility programs in the setting of the faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University- HCM city. Using data from a semi-structured interview with the faculty dean, a semi-structured interview with 5 students having just coming back from an international academic mobility program to the Philippines in early 2020 and a questionnaire among 78 students coming from 4 continuous cohorts, the findings evidence that (1) Intra-national mobility programs outperform the international ones, (2) Students expect more orientational activities and support from the faculty, (3) Students show high level of readiness for international academic mobility programs, (4) Students are more open-minded in choosing where to go and what to do during international academic mobility programs. Recommendations are well elaborated at the latter part of the study as references for institutions that are considering internationalizing their curricular. The study hopefully sheds light on the feasibility of implementing international academic mobility programs in the setting of Vietnam higher education.

Abstract: Self-Directed Learning (SDL) occupies a strong position in language education in many countries. Yet, little evidence has been given on this approach among English majors in the setting of Vietnam. The current cross-sectional study, therefore, is an effort to fill up the gap by exploring students’ levels of self-directedness in learning and their correlation with academic performance at a state university. The study employed the Self-Rating Scale of Self-Directed Learning (SRSSDL) with five domains consisting of 60 items developed by Williamson (2007) to get responses from 90 English-majored students of 04 cohorts. The data were then analyzed through SPSS, using Independent-sample T-test and One-way ANOVA. Results of the study evidenced that (1) Investigated students were found to be at moderate and high levels of SDL, (2) No difference in SDL scores was found between male and female students, (3) No considerable difference in SDL scores was found among students of different academic years in the same program, (4) There was a direct correlation between students’ SDL level and their academic performance. Based on the findings, recommendations are well elaborated as references for teachers who are considering leveraging their students’ self-directedness in learning. The study hopefully contributes to the existing literature on self-directed learning in language education.
