    Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum levels of OPG, TGF- β 1, and TGF- β 2 and BMD decrease rate (BDR) in native Chinese women. This cross-sectional study was performed on 465 healthy native Chinese women aged 35–80 years. Serum levels of OPG, TGF- β 1, and TGF- β 2 were determined. BDR was measured by DXA at the posteroanterior spine, hip, and distal forearm. At all skeletal sites tested, there was a negative correlation between BDR and serum levels of both OPG ( r = − 0.122 to –0.230, all P = 0.007–0.000) and TGF- β 2 ( r = − 0.100 to –0.173, all P = 0.029–0.000) and a positive correlation between BDR and serum TGF- β 1 ( r = 0.245 − 0.365 , all P = 0.000 ). After adjustment for age and BMI, there were no statistically significant correlations between serum levels of OPG or TGF- β 2 and BDR. However, statistically significant correlations between serum TGF- β 1 and BDR at the lumbar spine and ultradistal forearm remained. Multiple linear regression stepwise analysis showed that serum OPG could explain 1.4–3.7% of BDR variation. Serum TGF- β 1 was a positive determinant of BDR and could explain 5.3–13.3% of BDR variation.

    Abstract: Sulindac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, which is clinically used for the ailments of various inflammations. This study investigated the allele frequencies of FMO3 E158K and E308G and evaluated the influences of these two genetic polymorphisms on the pharmacokinetics of sulindac and its metabolites in Chinese healthy male volunteers. Eight FMO3 wild-type (FMO3 HHDD ) subjects and seven FMO3 homozygotes E158K and E308G mutant (FMO3 hhdd ) subjects were recruited from 247 healthy male volunteers genotyped by PCR-RFLP method. The plasma concentrations of sulindac, sulindac sulfide, and sulindac sulfone were determined by UPLC, while the pharmacokinetic parameters of the two different FMO3 genotypes were compared with each other. The frequencies of FMO3 E158K and E308G were 20.3% and 20.1%, respectively, which were in line with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium ( D ′ = 0.977, r 2 = 0.944). The mean values of C m a x , A U C 0 – 24 , and A U C 0 – ∞ of sulindac were significantly higher in FMO3 hhdd group than those of FMO3 HHDD group ( P 〈 0.05 ), while the pharmacokinetic parameters except T m a x of sulindac sulfide and sulindac sulfone showed no statistical difference between the two groups. The two FMO3 mutants were in close linkage disequilibrium and might play an important role in the pharmacokinetics of sulindac in Chinese healthy male volunteers.

    Abstract: Background. The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program is aimed to shorten patients’ recovery process and improve clinical outcomes. This study aimed to compare the outcomes between the ERAS program and the traditional pathway among patients with ankle fracture and distal radius fracture. Methods. This is a multicenter prospective clinical controlled study consisting of 323 consecutive adults with ankle fracture from 12 centers and 323 consecutive adults with distal radial fracture from 13 centers scheduled for open reduction and internal fixation between January 2017 and December 2018. According to the perioperative protocol, patients were divided into two groups: the ERAS group and the traditional group. The primary outcome was the patients’ satisfaction of the whole treatment on discharge and at 6 months postoperatively. The secondary outcomes include delapsed time between admission and surgery, length of hospital stay, postoperative complications, functional score, and the MOS item short form health survey-36. Results. Data describing 772 patients with ankle fracture and 658 patients with distal radius fracture were collected, of which 323 patients with ankle fracture and 323 patients with distal radial fracture were included for analysis. The patients in the ERAS group showed higher satisfaction levels on discharge and at 6 months postoperatively than in the traditional group ( P 〈 0.001 ). In the subgroup analysis, patients with distal radial fracture in the ERAS group were more satisfied with the treatment ( P = 0.001 ). Furthermore, patients with ankle fracture had less time in bed ( P 〈 0.001 ) and shorter hospital stay ( P 〈 0.001 ) and patients with distal radial fracture received surgery quickly after being admitted into the ward in the ERAS group than in the traditional group ( P = 0.001 ). Conclusions. Perioperative protocol based on the ERAS program was associated with high satisfaction levels, less time in bed, and short hospital stay without increased complication rate and decreased functional outcomes.

    Abstract: Background. To evaluate the association between blood urea nitrogen (BUN) to creatinine (Cr) (BUN/Cr) ratio and the in-hospital mortality of critically ill patients with cerebral infarction in intensive care unit (ICU). Methods. In this cohort study, the data of 3059 participants with cerebral infarction were collected from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-III and the MIMIC-IV database. After propensity score matching (PSM) on age and gender, 2085 people were involved in and divided into the alive group ( n = 1390 ) and the dead group ( n = 695 ) based on the results of follow-up. Multivariate logistic analyses were applied to identify the confounders and the association between BUN/Cr and mortality of cerebral infarction. Results. The median follow-up time was 10.5 days. Among 2778 participants, 695 were dead at the end of follow-up. Univariate analysis revealed that BUN/Cr [ risk   ratio   RR = 1.01 , 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.02] might be associated with the in-hospital mortality of cerebral infarction patients. After adjusting for respiratory failure, malignant cancer, anticoagulation, liver disease, white blood cell (WBC), red cell distribution width (RDW), glucose, bicarbonate, and temperature, BUN/Cr had week correlation with the increased risk of in-hospital mortality of cerebral infarction patients ( RR = 1.01 , 95% CI: 1.01-1.02). Conclusion. This study evaluated the association between BUN/Cr and the in-hospital mortality of cerebral infarction patients in ICU and found that BUN/Cr had weak correlation with the increased risk of in-hospital mortality of patients with cerebral infarction in ICU especially in males and those with respiratory failure, malignant cancer, and without liver disease, as well as those receiving anticoagulation.

    Abstract: Objective. This study was to examine the anti-inflammatory effect of sappanone A on interleukin- (IL-) 1β-stimulated osteoarthritis (OA) chondrocytes. Methods. Chondrocytes were pretreated with sappanone A for 2 h before subsequent IL-1β stimulation. The mRNA expression levels of iNOs, COX-2, aggrecan, and collagen-II were measured with qRT-PCR. The levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, MMP-3, and MMP-13 were determined by ELISA. The protein levels of iNOs, COX-2, ADAMTS-4, ADAMTS-5, aggrecan, collagen-II, p-p65, p65, IκBα, Nrf2, and HO-1 were assessed by Western blot. Results. Sappanone A inhibited the IL-1β-stimulated production of NO, PGE2, iNOS, COX-2, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8 in OA chondrocytes. In addition, sappanone A suppressed the expression of MMP-3, MMP-13, ADAMTS-4, and ADAMTS-5 in IL-1β-stimulated OA chondrocytes. The degradation of ECM components was reversed by sappanone A. Sappanone A prevented NF-κB activation while enhanced Nrf2/HO-1 activation in IL-1β-treated chondrocytes. Conclusion. Sappanone A may be a potent therapeutic agent for OA.

    Abstract: Twisted light, or orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying beams or photons, is a pillar of structured photonics, a booming subfield of modern optics. The generation and transformation of twisted light, which lie with coupling topological charges into target light’s wavefunctions, are usually performed by phase-only OAM manipulations. The practical twisted lights, however, obtained by this method are actually noneigen modes of free space, leading to an evolution through the diffractive propagation. Here, we present a general theoretical frame for accurately describing this evolution. Based on the theory, the whole diffractive propagation history in a typical OAM-manipulation loop, converting Gaussian light into a twisted one and then reconverting back, is demonstrated via a set of exact analytical solutions. These results provide a powerful tool for analyzing the transverse profiles of twisted light through the diffractive evolution, as a guideline for studying the science of structured light, which would provide guidelines for research studies in nonlinear optics and high-dimensional quantum information technology based on OAM-degree of freedom.

    Abstract: With the rapid development of Internet of Things technology, RFID technology has been widely used in various fields. In order to optimize the RFID system hardware deployment strategy and improve the deployment efficiency, the prediction of the RFID system identification rate has become a new challenge. In this paper, a neighborhood rough set and random forest (NRS-RF) combination model is proposed to predict the identification rate of an RFID system. Firstly, the initial influencing factors of the RFID system identification rate are reduced using neighborhood rough set theory combined with the principle of heuristic attribute reduction of neighborhood weighted dependency, thus obtaining a kernel factor subset. Secondly, a random forest prediction model is established based on the kernel factor subset, and a confusion matrix is established using out-of-bag (OOB) data to evaluate the prediction results. The test is conducted under the constructed RFID experimental environment, whose results showed that the model can predict the identification rate of the RFID system in a fast and efficient way, and the classification accuracy can reach 90.5%. It can effectively guide the hardware deployment and communication parameter protocol setting of the system and improve the system performance. Compared with BP neural network (BPNN) and other prediction models, NRS-RF has shorter prediction time and faster calculation speed. Finally, the validity of the proposed model was verified by the RFID intelligent archives management platform.

    Abstract: Objective. Up to 62% of perimenopausal women have depression symptoms. However, there is no efficacy treatment. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of EA therapy and escitalopram on perimenopause women with mild-moderate depressive symptom. Method. A multicenter, randomized, positive-controlled clinical trial was conducted at 6 hospitals in China. 242 perimenopause women with mild-moderate depressive symptom were recruited and randomly assigned to receive 36 sessions of EA treatment or escitalopram treatment. The primary outcome measure was the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17). The secondary outcome measures include menopause-specific quality of life (MENQOL) and serum sexual hormones which include estrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. Results. 221 (91.3%) completed the study, including 116 in the EA group and 105 in the escitalopram group. The baseline levels of demographic and outcome measurements were similar in the two groups. In the intervention period, there was no difference between two groups. However, in the follow-up, both HAMD-17 and MENQOL were significantly decreased, and at week 24 the mean differences were −2.23 and −8.97, respectively. There were no significant differences in the change of serum sexual hormones between the two groups. No serious adverse events occurred. Conclusion . EA treatment is effective and safe in relieving depression symptom and improving the quality of life in the perimenopausal depression. Further research is needed to understand long-term efficacy and explore the mechanism of this intervention. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02423694 .

    Abstract: This paper aims to carry out the condition assessment on temperature distribution and thermal effects of a long span suspension bridge. The structural health monitoring (SHM) oriented data analysis is first performed and several indices are developed to process the time-varying temperature, displacement, and strain responses. An analytical procedure based on heat transfer theory is presented to determine the temperature distributions within the bridge. The fine finite element models of the deck plate, the cross frame, and the bridge tower are constructed for thermal analysis. A new approach to the thermal-structural coupling analysis of long span bridges is proposed to examine the structural thermal effects. The feasibility and validity of the proposed data process method and the new approach for thermal-structural coupling analysis are examined through detailed numerical simulation. The numerical results are compared with the field measurement data obtained from the long-term monitoring system of the bridge and they show a very good agreement, in terms of temperature distribution in different time and in different seasons. This exercise verifies the accuracy of the heat transfer analysis employed and the effectiveness and validity of the proposed approaches for data processing and thermal-structural coupling analysis.

    Abstract: Mice are the most frequently used animals in pharmacokinetic studies; however, collecting series of blood samples from mice is difficult because of their small sizes and tiny vessels. In addition, due to the small sample size, it is problematic to perform high required quantification. Thus, present work aims to find an effective strategy for overcoming these challenges using trans-resveratrol as a tool drug. Based on the idea of a joint technology, the capillary microsampling (CMS) was chosen for blood sample collection from mice after delivery of trans-resveratrol (150 mg/kg) by gavage, and a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for the determination of trans-resveratrol and its main metabolites. All the mouse blood samples were exactly collected by CMS without obvious deviation. This provided credible samples for subsequent quantitative analysis. The HPLC-MS/MS method was found to be sensitive, accurate, and repeatable, and the pharmacokinetic parameters for all analytes were comparable with those reported in previous studies. However, the present joint technology offers the advantages of less animal damage, easy for sample preparation, and improved reliability. It has overcome some of the major limitations revealed in previous pharmacokinetic studies in mice and therefore provides a more effective option for future studies.
