    Abstract: Enterogenous infection is a major cause of death during traumatic hemorrhagic shock (THS). It has been reported that Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) plays an integral role in regulating mucosal immunity and intestinal homeostasis of the microbiota. However, the roles played by TLR5 on intestinal barrier maintenance and commensal bacterial translocation post-THS are poorly understood. In this research, we established THS models in wild-type (WT) and Tlr5−/− (genetically deficient in TLR5 expression) mice. We found that THS promoted bacterial translocation, while TLR5 deficiency played a protective role in preventing commensal bacteria dissemination after THS. Furthermore, intestinal microbiota analysis uncovered that TLR5 deficiency enhanced the mucosal biological barrier by decreasing RegIIIγ-mediated bactericidal activity against G+ anaerobic bacteria. We then sorted small intestinal TLR5+ lamina propria dendritic cells (LPDCs) and analyzed TH1 differentiation in the intestinal lamina propria and a coculture system consisting of LPDCs and naïve T cells. Although TLR5 deficiency attenuated the regulation of TH1 polarization by LPDCs, it conferred stability to the cells during THS. Moreover, retinoic acid (RA) released from TLR5+ LPDCs could play a key role in modulating TH1 polarization. We also found that gavage administration of RA alleviated bacterial translocation in THS-treated WT mice. In summary, we documented that TLR5 signaling plays a pivotal role in regulating RegIIIγ-induced killing of G+ anaerobic bacteria, and LPDCs mediated TH1 differentiation via RA. These processes prevent intestinal bacterial translocation and enterogenous infection after THS, suggesting that therapeutically targeting LPDCs or gut microbiota can interfere with bacterial translocation after THS.

    Abstract: Objective. Our study assessed the predictive value of heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) for critically ill patients. Methods. 150 critically ill patients admitted to the emergency department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, were included in our study from August 2021 to April 2022. Serum H-FABP, procalcitonin (PCT), lactate (LAC), and other markers were determined within 1 h after admission. The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score and the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) were calculated. The independent predictors of 28-day mortality in critically ill patients were analyzed by logistic regression, and the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to analyze the predictive value for 28-day mortality in critically ill patients. Results. Age, APACHE II, SOFA, GCS, LAC, H-FABP, IL-6, Scr, and D-dimer were significantly different in the nonsurvivor vs. survivor groups ( P 〈 0.05 ), with H-FABP correlating with cTNI, Scr, PCT, and SOFA scores ( P 〈 0.05 ). Logistic regression analysis showed that H-FABP, APACHE II, LAC, and age were independent predictors for 28-day mortality in critically ill patients ( P 〈 0.05 ). The AUC of ROC curve in H-FABP was 0.709 (sensitivity 72.9%, specificity 66.1%, and cut-off 4.35), which was slightly lower than AUC of ROC curve in LAC (AUC 0.750, sensitivity 58.3%, specificity 76.1%, and cut-off 1.95) and APACHE II (AUC 0.731, sensitivity 77.1%, specificity 58.7%, and cut-off 12.5). However, statistically, there was no difference in the diagnostic value of H-FABP compared with the other two indicators ( Z 1 = 0.669 , P = 0.504 ; Z 2 = 0.383 , P = 0.702 ). But H-FABP (72.9%) has higher sensitivity than LAC (58.3%). The combined evaluation of H-FABP+APACHE II score (AUC 0.801, sensitivity 71.7%, and specificity 78.2%; Z = 2.612 , P = 0.009 ) had better diagnostic value than H-FABP alone and had high sensitivity (71.7%) and specificity (78.2%). Conclusion. H-FABP, LAC, APACHE II, and age can be used as independent risk factors affecting the prognosis of critically ill patients. Compared with using the above indicators alone, the H-FABP+APACHE II has a high diagnostic value, and the early and rapid evaluation is particularly important for the adjustment of treatment plans and prognosis.

    Abstract: The objective of this study was to analyze six essential oils from Zanthoxylum genus (family Rutaceae) in China and evaluate their repellent activities against Tribolium castaneum and Lasioderma serricorne adults. Six essential oils from Zanthoxylum genus, including Z. armatum , Z. dimorphophyllum , Z. dimorphophyllum var. spinifolium , Z. piasezkii , Z. stenophyllum, and Z. dissitum, were obtained by hydrodistillation and their yields were ranging from 0.02% to 0.53%. Totally, there were 39 chemical components revealed by GC-MS. Among them, some components with high relative content existed in more than three Zanthoxylum species. For instance, both δ -cadinene (1.21%–17.15%) and spathulenol (0.36%–10.19%) appeared in essential oils of Z. dimorphophyllum , Z. piasezkii , Z. stenophyllum, and Z. dissitum which were found to have higher content of sesquiterpenoids. The repellent activities of six essential oil samples against T. castaneum and L. serricorne adults were investigated for the first time. Data demonstrated that six Zanthoxylum species had much stronger repellent activities against T. castaneum than L. serricorne adults, especially in 2 hours after exposure. The results indicate that these six essential oils from Zanthoxylum have significant potential to be developed into natural repellents to control insects in grains, food, and traditional Chinese medicinal materials.

    Abstract: The growing demand for new products that rely on the accurate identification of a target’s location indoors, while remaining mindful of cost, continues to drive research in this important and challenging area. Researchers are actively pursuing algorithmic improvements to eliminate errors introduced from complex interference factors present in indoor, wireless communication environments. In this work, we adopt a differential signal strength method in the design of our new indoor localization algorithm. The proposed algorithm reduces errors in the time domain by smoothing out the wireless signal fluctuations, thus stabilizing the signal; a single exponential algorithm is applied to the signal strength parameters collected to accomplish this. The target’s position is then computed by utilizing both the plane geometric method and difference localization theory. This combination of techniques is reasonable for the environment under consideration (small scale, wireless), as the multipath effects for the signal are approximately equal under these conditions. In addition, the proposed approach is compatible with a wide variety of technologies (e.g., RFID and Bluetooth); it can be cost-effectively deployed by leveraging an existing hardware infrastructure. The proposed approach has been implemented and experimentally validated. The test results are very promising: they indicate that our algorithm improves the positioning accuracy by 70%–80% in comparison with the trilateration and LANDMARC positioning algorithms.

    Abstract: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) actively participate in breast cancer (BRCA) tumorigenesis via epigenetic mechanisms. Our study identified immune-related lncRNA (irlncRNA) pairs and compiled them into a set of noncoding gene signatures able to stratify subtypes of BRCA associated with variable degrees of survival and immune cell infiltration. A 40 immune-related lncRNA pair (IRLP) signature including 43 irlncRNAs was built, with high sensitivity and specificity for the prediction of survival in different molecular subtypes of BRCA. Results demonstrated that the low-risk group showed a significantly longer survival rate, and this novel IRLP signature was highly associated with survival status, T stage, metastatic disease, and overall stage in BRCA. Immune infiltrating analyses found that the low-risk group has a lower expression level of macrophage M2 and a higher expression level of immunosuppressed biomarkers than the high-risk group. DEirlncRNAs were further proven to be significantly related to the MAPK signaling, Jak-STAT signaling, and ErbB signaling pathways in BRCA. In conclusion, the 40 IRLP signature showed a promising clinical prediction value in the prognosis of different molecular subtypes and immunotherapy response in BRCA, and the underlying mechanism for these IRLPs warrants further investigations.

    Abstract: In this study, the effects of temperature, pH, and biochar under cadmium stress on the adsorption characteristics of atrazine in soils in northeast China were studied by batch adsorption method. In the atrazine–Cd(II) coexistence system, the adsorption of atrazine by the soils reached equilibrium within 24 h, but there were some differences in sorption capacities of the three types of soil and the order of adsorption is albic soil  〉  black soil  〉  saline-alkaline soil. With the concentration of atrazine increased, the adsorption capacity of atrazine in the three types of soil gradually increased, the upward trend became more obvious with the ambient temperature of the solution decreased. The adsorption kinetics curves of atrazine in the three types of soil conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm follows the Langmuir model. When atrazine and Cd(II) coexist in soils, the decrease in atrazine adsorption in the soil may be due to the competitive interaction between the two chemicals. Cd(II) occupies part of the adsorption site of atrazine, thus saturating the active site in soils. Since atrazine is a weakly alkaline pesticide, the lower the pH of the soil, the higher the affinity of atrazine for the soil. After adding biochar to the soil, the functional groups in biochar can form π bond with atrazine, which promotes the fixation of atrazine in the soil. The results show that the prevention of atrazine and cadmium leaching can be achieved by appropriately adjusting the pH, temperature, clay content, and organic matter of the soils.

    Abstract: Introduction. Acute pain is a prevalent problem for dementia residents in nursing homes. A variety of intervention strategies have been applied to address this problem. However, there remains an issue of inadequate pain control. This study aims to explore the analgesic efficacy of auricular acupressure (AA) for dementia residents with acute pain in nursing homes. Methods. A multicenter, single-blind, randomized, and sham-controlled clinical trial was performed in three nursing homes in Yinchuan, China. All of the 206 eligible patients with acute pain were randomly divided into two groups for real AA therapy or sham AA (at sham point stimulation) therapy. The primary outcome was measured with a face pain scale revised (FPS-R) score before the procedure, 5 min after the start of the intervention, and 5 min after finishing the procedure. Secondary outcomes covered three physiological parameters, adverse reactions observed, satisfaction level of caregivers, acceptance of patients, and additional use of analgesics. Results. There was a significant difference in pain scores based on FPS-R between the two groups ( p 〈 0.01 ). Pain score in the true AA group was 1.84 ± 0.23, compared with 2.22 ± 0.81 in the sham AA group. No adverse events were found during the whole procedure for all patients. The satisfaction level of caregivers and acceptance of patients in the real AA group were significantly higher than those in the sham AA group. Conclusion. This study shows that real AA was an alternative analgesic modality in reducing acute pain in patients with mild dementia.

    Abstract: Objective. To ascertain the efficacy and safety of Ganji Formulation (GF) for patients with Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who had undergone surgery. Materials and Methods. A total of 262 HCC patients who had undergone liver resection, local ablation, or transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) were divided randomly into the treatment group and control group. The former was treated with GF and the later with placebo, both for 6 months. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). Second endpoints were disease-free survival (DFS) or time to disease progression (TTP). Results. OS of the treatment group was significantly longer than that of the control group ( P 〈 0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that, for patients who received TACE, the TTP was significantly longer in the treatment group than in the control group (P 〈 0.05). However, for patients who underwent liver resection or local ablation, there was no significant difference in DFS between the two groups ( P 〉 0.05). Conclusion. GF could improve postoperative cumulative survival and prolong the TTP. This clinical trial number is registered with ChiCTR-IOR-15007349 .

    Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an aggressive malignant tumor with a poor prognosis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in tumors; however, the role of ROS-related genes is still unclear in HCC. Therefore, we analyzed the role of ROS-related genes in HCC via bioinformatics methods. Firstly, a prognosis model was constructed using LASSO Cox regression and multivariate analyses. We also investigated the potential function of the ROS-related genes and the correlation with immune infiltration, tumor stemness, and drug sensitivity. ICGC database was used for validation. Secondly, we further analyzed the role of 11 ROS-related genes in HCC. As a member of ROS gene family, the role of STK25 has remained unclear in HCC. We explored the biological function of STK25 using in vitro experiments. The present study was the first to construct a ROS-related prognostic model in HCC. The correlation of ROS-related genes with immune infiltration, tumor stemness, and drug sensitivity was dissected. Furthermore, we demonstrated that STK25 knockdown could increase the proliferation, migration, and invasion capacity of HCC cells.
