    Abstract: Community structures can reveal organizations and functional properties of complex networks; hence, detecting communities from networks is of great importance. With the surge of large networks in recent years, the efficiency of community detection is demanded critically. Therefore, many local methods have emerged. In this paper, we propose a node similarity based community detection method, which is also a local one consisted of two phases. In the first phase, we first take out the node with the largest degree from the network to take it as an exemplar of the first community and insert its most similar neighbor node into the community as well. Then, the one with the largest degree in the remainder nodes is selected; if its most similar neighbor has not been classified into any community yet, we create a new community for the selected node and its most similar neighbor. Otherwise, if its most similar neighbor has been classified into a certain community, we insert the selected node into the community to which its most similar neighbor belongs. This procedure is repeated until every node in the network is assigned to a community; at that time, we obtain a series of preliminary communities. However, some of them might be too small or too sparse; edges connecting to outside of them might go beyond the ones inside them. Keeping them as the final ones will lead to a low-quality community structure. Therefore, we merge some of them in an efficient approach in the second phase to improve the quality of the resulting community structure. To testify the performance of our proposed method, extensive experiments are performed on both some artificial networks and some real-world networks. The results show that the proposed method can detect high-quality community structures from networks steadily and efficiently and outperform the comparison algorithms significantly.

    Abstract: Purpose . To evaluate the regulating effect of Notch-Hes1 signaling on IL-17A + γδ + T cell expression and IL-17A secretion in mouse psoriasis-like skin inflammation. Materials and Methods . Experimental mice were randomly divided into control group, model group (5% imiquimod- (IMQ-) treated mice), and intervention group (IMQ and γ -secretase inhibitor DAPT cotreated mice). The severity of psoriasis-like skin inflammation was evaluated by target lesion score based on the clinical psoriasis area and severity index (PASI). Flow cytometry detected IL-17A + γδ + T cell percentage. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR detected Hes1 mRNA expression. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and western blot measured IL-17A serum concentration and protein expression. Additionally, splenic single cells from model mice were treated by DAPT to further evaluate the inhibitory effect of blocking Notch-Hes1 signaling on IL-17A + γδ + T cell differentiation and IL-17A secretion. Results . The spleen index, IL-17A + γδ + T cell percentage, Hes1 mRNA expression, IL-17A serum concentration, and protein expression were all significantly higher in model mice than control mice, while dramatically reduced in intervention mice by DAPT treatment, which also obviously alleviated the target lesion score, epidermal hyperplasia, and dermal inflammatory cell infiltration of intervention mice. In vitro study demonstrated that DAPT treatment could result in dose-dependent decrease of IL-17A + γδ + T cell percentage and IL-17A secretion in splenic single cells of model mice.

    Abstract: Inflammation causes tissue damage and promotes ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI), and the infiltration and polarization of macrophages play an important role in regulating inflammation post-MI. Here, we investigated the anti-inflammatory function of curcumin after MI and studied its relationship with macrophage polarization. In vivo, curcumin not only attenuated ventricular remodeling 3 months after MI but also suppressed inflammation during the first 7 days post-MI. Importantly, the results of qPCR and immunochemistry showed that curcumin decreased M1 (iNOS, CCL2, and CD86) but increased M2 macrophage (Arg1, CD163, and CD206) marker expression in the myocardium of MI mice during the first 7 days post-MI. And flow cytometry analysis indicated that curcumin suppressed M1 (CD45+Gr-1-CD11b+iNOS+ cells) but enhanced M2 macrophage (CD45+Gr-1-CD11b+Arg+ cells) expansion in the myocardium of MI mice during the first 7 days post-MI. In vitro, curcumin decreased LPS/IFNγ-elevated M1 macrophage marker (iNOS and CD86) expression and the proportion of M1 macrophages (iNOS+F4/80+ cells) but increased LPS/IFNγ-suppressed M2 macrophage marker (Arg1 and CD206) expression and the proportion of M2 macrophages (Arg1+F4/80+ cells). In addition, curcumin modulates M1/M2 macrophage polarization partly via AMPK. In conclusion, curcumin suppressed the MI-induced inflammation by modulating macrophage polarization partly via the AMPK pathway.

    Abstract: The centrality plays an important role in many community-detection algorithms, which depend on various kinds of centralities to identify seed vertices of communities first and then expand each of communities based on the seeds to get the resulting community structure. The traditional algorithms always use a single centrality measure to recognize seed vertices from the network, but each centrality measure has both pros and cons when being used in this circumstance; hence seed vertices identified using a single centrality measure might not be the best ones. In this paper, we propose a framework which integrates advantages of various centrality measures to identify the seed vertices from the network based on the TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) multiattribute decision-making technology. We take each of the centrality measures involved as an attribute, rank vertices according to the scores which are calculated for them using TOPSIS, and then take vertices with top ranks as the seeds. To put this framework into practice, we concretize it in this paper by considering four centrality measures as attributes to identify the seed vertices of communities first, then expanding communities by iteratively inserting one unclassified vertex into the community to which its most similar neighbor belongs, and the similarity between them is the largest among all pairs of vertices. After that, we obtain the initial community structure. However, the amount of communities might be much more than they should be, and some communities might be too small to make sense. Therefore, we finally consider a postprocessing procedure to merge some initial communities into larger ones to acquire the resulting community structure. To test the effectiveness of the proposed framework and method, we have performed extensive experiments on both some synthetic networks and some real-world networks; the experimental results show that the proposed method can get better results, and the quality of the detected community structure is much higher than those of competitors.

    Abstract: Objective . Both hyperuricemia and hypertension have important clinical implications, but their relationship in terms of gender and age is still a matter of debate. In this study, we aimed to explore gender- and age-specific differences in this association between hyperuricemia and hypertension in a Chinese population. Methods . A total of 78596 ostensibly healthy subjects (47781 men and 30815 women) were recruited. The association between hyperuricemia and hypertension was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression, and the analyses were stratified by gender and age. Results . Overall prevalence of hypertension and hyperuricemia was significantly higher in males than in females. Increasing trends of hypertension prevalence in both genders as well as hyperuricemia prevalence in females were found along with aging. However, males showed a reduced trend in hyperuricemia prevalence with aging. Higher hypertension and hyperuricemia prevalence was found in young and middle-aged men than in women, but not in elderly people older than 70 years. Significantly increased risk of hypertension from hyperuricemia was found only in men with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.131 ( P 〈 0.01 ), especially in the middle-aged male participants. However, such significant results were not found in women. Similarly, hyperuricemia was also an independent risk factor of increased systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure in males, but not in females. Conclusion . We observed significantly higher overall prevalence of hyperuricemia and hypertension in men than in women. Men with hyperuricemia (particularly in middle age) had a significantly increased susceptibility of hypertension, while this significant association was not observed in women.

    Abstract: Background. It is known to all the doctors and patients that both the morality and incidence rate of chronic heart failure (CHF) are quite high among various heart diseases. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) comprehensive intervention becomes a rising prospective therapy for patients with CHF. Considering the efficacy of TCM, the study aims to test the safety as well as the validity of TCM comprehensive intervention in patients who are struggling with CHF. Methods. The study is an essentially randomized, single-central, placebo-controlled, double-blinded crossover trial. Eighty-two eligible subjects aged 18–75 years with CHF are supposed to be recruited. According to the subject plan, all the patients will be divided into group A and B. The patients in group A will receive oral Qishen Taohong granules (QTGs) combined with TCM external treatment and standard Western medicine for four weeks. After that, a 2-week washout would be proceeded; this group will be reallocated to another four weeks with oral placebo granules combined with TCM external treatment and standard Western medicine. In contrast, group B will perform the opposite protocol. The primary outcome conforms to the classification from the New York Heart Association (NYHA). Meanwhile, the secondary outcomes are echocardiogram, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), Chronic Heart Failure Quality of Life Scale of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine (CHFQLS), TCM syndrome, symptom, sign, six-minute walk test (6MWT), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA), major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), and metabolomics. Discussion. Based on conventional treatments, TCM comprehensive intervention may further improve the patients’ cardiac function and then enhance their quality of life. The results will provide high-quality evidence of TCM comprehensive intervention in treating CHF.

    Abstract: Purpose. To describe the clinical features, management, and outcomes of patients with posttraumatic endophthalmitis (PTE) and to determine risk factors for poor visual prognosis. Methods. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 42 consecutive patients presenting with PTE who were treated at our institution between 2017 and 2019. Each patient’s data, including demographic characteristics, ocular injury details, surgical records, patient outcomes, and laboratory results, were collected and analyzed. Multivariate analysis was conducted to determine the factors associated with poor visual outcomes. Results. In our series, male (n = 36, 85.7%) and patients below 60 years of age (20–40 years, 23.8%; 40–60 years, 57.14%) comprised most of the total cohort. On presentation, 39 (92.8%) of the 42 PTE patients presented best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) worse than counting fingers. Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was performed in all the patients. 59.5% (n = 25) of the patients’ BCVA improved after surgery and 33.3% (n = 14) achieved BCVA of 20/200 or better. The rate of evisceration was 7.1% (n = 3). Of the 42 specimens, the culture was positive in 10 (23.8%) eyes. By univariate analysis, factors including sex, occupation, systemic disease, source of trauma, lens injury, silicone oil tamponade, usage of intravitreal antibiotics, BCVA at presentation, and culture positive for any organism did not affect the final visual outcome. The features associated with poor BCVA (grouped as  〈  20/200 and ≥ 20/200) included older age ( P = 0.035 ), corneal-sclera wound (versus sclera wound) ( P = 0.047 ), retained intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) ( P = 0.006 ), treatment  〉  3 days (versus  〈  1 day) ( P = 0.033 ), and more times of surgeries ( P = 0.033 ). Conclusions. PTE is a severe complication of penetrating globe injuries associated with irreversible visual loss. Our results highlighted the importance of conducting early therapeutic PPV and IOFB removal to achieve better visual outcomes.
