Abstract: The aim of this paper is to use the homotopy analysis method (HAM), an approximating technique for solving linear and nonlinear higher order boundary value problems. Using HAM, approximate solutions of seventh-, eighth-, and tenth-order boundary value problems are developed. This approach provides the solution in terms of a convergent series. Approximate results are given for several examples to illustrate the implementation and accuracy of the method. The results obtained from this method are compared with the exact solutions and other methods (Akram and Rehman (2013), Farajeyan and Maleki (2012), Geng and Li (2009), Golbabai and Javidi (2007), He (2007), Inc and Evans (2004), Lamnii et al. (2008), Siddiqi and Akram (2007), Siddiqi et al. (2012), Siddiqi et al. (2009), Siddiqi and Iftikhar (2013), Siddiqi and Twizell (1996), Siddiqi and Twizell (1998), Torvattanabun and Koonprasert (2010), and Kasi Viswanadham and Raju (2012)) revealing that the present method is more accurate.

Abstract: Kinetics and mechanism of substitution of cyanide ion in hexacyanoferrate(II) by EDTA catalysed by mercury(II) has been studied spectrophotometrically at 365 nm in potassium hydrogen phthalate buffer of pH = 5.0 and ionic strength, I = 0.1 M, maintained by (KNO 3 ) at 25 °C. Effect of the pH and concentration of the EDTA, [Fe(CN) 4- 6 ] on the rate of reaction has been studied. The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction has been shown through dissociative mechanism. The mechanism of ligand substitution in the complex together with the kinetic data has been shown. The catalytic activity of mercury(II) has also been studied as a function of its concentration. The maximum reaction product was detected at pH = 5 after which a decline in absorption occurs followed by precipitation. It is an inexpensive method to identify and remove the cyanide ion in solution even in very low concentration of the order of 10 -4 M.

Abstract: Carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranol methylcarbamate), is known to induce oxidative stress and to cause inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity. The present work was envisaged to evaluate the effect of carbofuran on redox indices and its interactions with hepatic markers in rat. The ameliorating effect of Citrus limon fruit extract on carbofuran induced toxicity was also monitored. The results indicated that carbofuran treatment caused significant alterations in the levels of activities of AST, ALT, and LDH in liver tissues and serum. The levels of enzymatic oxidative stress markers such as SOD and catalase and nonenzymatic redox molecules such as total thiol, GSH, and protein thiol also showed significant perturbations in rat liver due to carbofuran treatment. The administration of Citrus limon fruit extract, however, was able to markedly ameliorate the toxicity of carbofuran by protecting the levels of aforesaid biomarkers to near normal levels. The ameliorative effect of Citrus limon fruit extract may be due to the presence of different antioxidants in it which may neutralize the ROS and RNS generated in the body tissue due to pesticide stress. These results suggested that Citrus limon fruit extract may be utilized as a potential supplement in proper management of pesticide intoxication in association with relevant therapeutics.

Abstract: Reports have documented titanium (Ti) hypersensitivity after dental implant treatment. Alternative materials have been suggested including zirconia (Zr) ceramics, which have shown predictable osseointegration in animal studies and appear free of immune responses. The aim of the research was to investigate the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) of one-piece Zr, compared with one-piece Ti implants, placed in the jaws and femurs of domestic sheep. Ten New Zealand mixed breed sheep were used. A One-piece prototype Ti (control) and one Zr (test) implant were placed in the mandible, and one of each implant (Ti and Zr) was placed into the femoral epicondyle of each animal. The femur implants were submerged and unloaded; the mandibular implants were placed using a one-stage transgingival protocol and were nonsubmerged. After a healing period of 12 weeks, %BIC was measured. The overall survival rate for mandibular and femur implants combined was 87.5%. %BIC was higher for Zr implants versus Ti implants in the femur (85.5%, versus 78.9%) ( p = 0.002 ). Zirconia implants in the mandible showed comparable %BIC to titanium implants (72.2%, versus 60.3%) ( p = 0.087 ). High failure rate of both Zr and Ti one-piece implants in the jaw could be attributed to the one-piece design and surface characteristics of the implant that could have influenced osseointegration. Further clinical trials are recommended to evaluate the performance of zirconia implants under loading conditions.

Abstract: Objectives . To compare percutaneous mitral valve repair (PMVR) with optimal medical therapy (OMT) in patients with heart failure (HF) and severe functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). Background . Many patients with HF and FMR are not suitable for surgical valve replacement and remain symptomatic despite maximal OMT. PMVR has recently emerged as an alternative solution. Methods . We performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis to address this question. Cochrane CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and Scopus were searched for randomized (RCT) and nonrandomized studies comparing PMVR with OMT in patients with HF and FMR. Primary endpoint was all-cause midterm mortality (at 1 and 2 years). Secondary endpoints were 30-day mortality and cardiovascular mortality and HF hospitalizations, at maximum follow-up. Studies including mixed cohort of degenerative and functional MR were allowed initially but were excluded in a secondary sensitivity analysis for each of the study’s end points. This meta-analysis was performed following the publication of two RCTs (MITRA-FR and COAPT). Results . Eight studies (six observational, two RCTs) comprising 3,009 patients were included in the meta-analysis. In comparison with OMT, PMVR significantly reduced 1-year mortality (RR: 0.70 [0.56, 0.87]; p=0.002; I 2 =47.6%), 2-year mortality (RR: 0.63 [0.55, 0.73]; p 〈 0.001; I 2 =0%), and cardiovascular mortality (RR: 0.32 [0.23, 0.44]; p 〈 0.001; I 2 =0%). No significant difference between PMVR+OMT and OMT was noted in HF hospitalization (HR: 0.69 [0.40, 1.20]; p=0.19; I 2 =85%) and 30-day mortality (RR: 1.13 [0.68, 1.87]; p=0.16; I 2 =0%). Conclusions . In comparison with OMT, PMVR significantly reduces 1-year mortality, 2-year mortality, and cardiovascular mortality in patients with HF and severe MR.

Abstract: C. elegans is a preferential model for testing environmental toxicity of compounds including nanomaterials. The impact of multigeneration exposure of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the lifespan and fertility of C. elegans is not known and therefore is investigated in this study. We used pomegranate ( Punica granatum ) peel extracts as a reducing agent to synthesize gold nanoparticles (PPE-AuNPs) from chloroauric acid. Nematodes were grown till adult stage and then exposed to 25, 50, and 100  μ g/ml of PPE-AuNPs at 20°C for 72 hours and then assessed for lifespan and fertility. The same protocols were followed for subsequent F1, F2, and F3 generations. The results showed that PPE-AuNPs dose-dependently but insignificantly reduced the lifespan of C. elegans . Exposure of PPE-AuNPs significantly and dose-dependently reduced the fertility of C. elegans in terms of the number of eggs produced. The reproductive toxicity of PPE-AuNPs was found to be minimal in parental generation (F0) and maximal in F3 generation. In conclusion, biologically synthesized PPE-AuNPs adversely affect the fertility of C. elegans while the factors responsible for reproductive toxicity are inherited by subsequent generations.

Abstract: Effect of Pb doping on the structural and low temperature magnetic properties of SrPb x Fe 12 - x O 19 ( x = 0 , 0.1 , 0.2 , 0.3 , and    0.4 ), synthesized by sol-gel autocombustion technique, has been investigated. The powder samples were sintered at 800°C for 2 h in order to develop the stable hexagonal phase, characteristic of the SrFe 12 O 19 structure. The consequences of Pb substitution (at iron sites) on various structural parameters like lattice constants, unit cell volume, crystallite size, and porosity have been discussed. Fourier transform infrared frequency bands were utilized to determine the formation of tetrahedral and octahedral clusters of M-type ferrites. Hexagonal texture of the grains, a characteristic of the hexagonal crystal structure of SrFe 12 O 19 , was refined by Pb substitution. The magnetic properties, determined using a vibrating sample magnetometer, revealed that saturation magnetization decreased, while coercivity was increased with the increase of Pb contents. However, the increased squareness ratio and hence the energy product motivate the utilization of these ferrite compositions where hard magnetic characteristics are required. The increased values of saturation magnetization were observed at reduced temperature of 200 K, attributable to the better spin alignments of individual magnetic moments at low temperature.

Abstract: A novel 4-point interpolating subdivision scheme is presented, which generates the family of C 2 limiting curves and its limiting function has support on [ − 7 / 3 , 7 / 3 ] . It behaves better than classical 4-point binary and ternary schemes with the same approximation order in many aspects that it has smaller support size, higher smoothness, and is computationally more efficient. The proposed nonstationary scheme can reproduce the functions of linear spaces spanned by { 1 , sin ( α x ) , cos ( α x ) } for 0 〈 α 〈 π / 3 . Moreover, some examples are illustrated to show that the proposed scheme can also reproduce asteroids, cardioids, and conic sections as well.
