    Abstract: Leonurus cardiaca L. (motherwort) is a perennial herb, native to Asia and southeastern Europe, with widespread global occurrence in present days. The plant was historically used as cardiotonic and for treating gynaecological afflictions (such as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menopausal anxiety, or postpartum depression). Although its use in oriental and occidental medicine is relatively well documented, the recent progress registered raises the need for an update of the Medicines Agency assessment report on Leonurus cardiaca L., herba (2010). The current study presents the progress made within the 2010-2018 timeframe regarding the potential applications and scientific evidences supporting the traditional use of motherwort, in the same time suggesting future research opportunities.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study is to produce antibacterial filters based on a commercial polyethylene terephthalate (PET) filter with pores larger than bacterial cells. The antibacterial agent was copper nanoparticles (CuNP) which were synthesized and deposited on the PET filter by reducing copper(II) ions using sodium hypophosphite (NaH2PO2) as the reducing agent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the capping agent. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the presence of 150–300 nm CuNP on the surface of PET filters. We evaluated the amounts of deposited CuNP using a colorimetric method and the antibacterial-filtration capacity of CuNP/PET filters against Escherichia coli using the colony counting method. The reaction conditions were optimized successively using the one-factor-at-a-time approach for the concentration of copper precursor, the concentration of PVP, and the reaction time. The results showed that an initial 1 M CuSO4, 0.8% w / v PVP, and 10-20 min of reaction resulted in a CuNP/PET filter with the highest antibacterial activity: 5.2 log cfu/mL reduction for Escherichia coli and 5.6 log cfu/mL reduction or Staphylococcus aureus. SEM images demonstrated the damages of the bacterial cells after passing through the CuNP/PET filter. ICP-MS analysis of the first liter of filtrate showed that the copper concentration of released copper was 0.6 ± 0.1  ppm, which is below the WHO standard for drinking water. Therefore, these CuNP/PET filters are promising for point-of-use disinfection of water, where clean potable water is not sufficient.

    Abstract: Copper has demonstrated utility in multiple industrial applications for its high conductivity and antibacterial/antiviral properties. However, numerous findings have suggested potential hazards regarding pathogenesis. This study was conducted to demonstrate the application of zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a cost-effective biological assay to detect environmental pollution, i.e., heavy metal of coins. We demonstrated that zebrafish larvae exposed to copper-plated coins or copper (II) ion solution elicited a consistent phenotype of early mortality without signs of morphological defects in surviving individuals. Copper ion solution served as a standard to (1) corroborate copper exposure from coins and (2) demonstrate proportional increase in early mortality phenotype according to concentration. We found that 5 μM CuSO4·5H2O was the minimal concentration to elicit the observed phenotypes from copper toxicity. This study aimed to demonstrate how a simple protocol involving wild-type zebrafish larvae could provide an economical solution to water monitoring in areas of rapid technological advancement and increasing environmental concerns, especially in communities without access to expensive analytical methods.
