    Abstract: Purpose. To report baseline information of a prediabetes mellitus (PDM) cohort with the aim of exploring related factors for the progression of PDM and its complications. Methods. This study is an exploratory and cross-sectional analysis of the baseline data from a cohort study. Residents aged 18 to 70 years from Houtang Village, Nanyue Town, Yueqing City, Zhejiang Province, China, were invited to participate between October 1, 2018 and July 1, 2019. Blood samples were collected for analysis, and questionnaire interviews were conducted to assess behavioral characteristics. The study participants were divided into DM, PDM, and normal groups for comparisons based on their blood work, and multiple multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to assess the risk factors for DM and PDM. Results. Data from 406 participants were used in the baseline analysis, with a mean age of 51.2 ± 11.0 years and 160 (33.0%) males. The number of participants in the DM, PDM, and normal group was 58 (14.3%), 166 (40.9%), and 182 (44.8%), respectively. The prevalence of DM was 14.3%, and the prevalence of PDM was 40.9%. The regression analysis showed that older age (relative risk ratio (RRR) = 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01–1.11, P = 0.018 ), higher systolic blood pressure (RRR = 1.04; 95% CI, 1.004–1.08, P = 0.030 ), higher BMI (RRR = 1.20; 95% CI, 1.06–3.06, P = 0.004 ), higher TG (RRR = 1.80; 95% CI, 1.06–3.06, P = 0.029 ), and higher WBC count (RRR = 1.32; 95% CI, 1.07–1.64, P = 0.010 ) were significantly associated with a higher risk of DM. Meanwhile, higher systolic blood pressure (RRR = 1.03; 95% CI, 1.004–1.06, P = 0.025 ) was the only factor significantly associated with a higher risk of PDM. Conclusion. The prevalence of DM and PDM is relatively high in this wealthy East China village population. Many modifiable risk factors exist for DM and PDM, which will be closely monitored during our longitudinal observation.

    Abstract: Background. There are still controversies about the curative effect of vitamin C in treating HIE, and its mechanism of action is not entirely clear. This study is designed to explore the potential molecular mechanism of vitamin C in treating neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Methods. The effect targets of vitamin C and the pathogenic targets of neonatal HIE were obtained via retrieval of public databases to screen out the molecular targets of vitamin C acting on neonatal HIE. Gene Ontology (GO) functional annotations and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis were performed on the main targets. Vitamin C and the optimum target structural components are subjected to molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation analysis via computer software so as to verify their binding activity and stability. Result. Based on 16 overlapping targets of vitamin C and HIE, seven main targets were identified in this study. According to GO and KEGG analysis, molecular functions (top 25 items) and signal pathways (21 items) related to inflammatory reaction, immune response, and cell transcriptional control may be potential pathways for vitamin C to treat neonatal HIE. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation were adopted to definitively determine the 4 optimum core target spots. Conclusion. The efficacy of vitamin C on HIE is involved in the immunoregulation and inflammation-related functional processes and signal pathways. These molecular mechanisms, including core targets, will contribute to the clinical practice of neonatal HIE in the future.

    Abstract: Objective. To investigate the initial hemodialysis vascular access in Hangzhou and provide evidence for improving the use of autologous arteriovenous fistula by identifying factors associated with the choice of initial vascular access. Methods. We retrospectively studied the initial hemodialysis vascular access of 257 patients in five hemodialysis units in Hangzhou of China during a 21-month period (January 2018 to September 2019). A logistic regression was used to identify the risk factors of failing to use an arteriovenous fistula at the initiation of hemodialysis. Results. (1) 257 participants with mean age 67.65 ± 13.43 years old were reviewed, including 165 males (64.2%) and 92 females (35.8%). The etiologies of end-stage renal disease included diabetic nephropathy (37.35%), chronic glomerulonephritis (31.13%), hypertensive nephropathy (14.01%), and other diseases (17.51%). Only 51 patients (19.84%) received arteriovenous fistula, whereas the remaining 206 patients (80.16%) initiated dialysis with a central venous catheter. (2) Logistic regression analysis revealed that the independent risk factors for central venous catheter at the initial hemodialysis were age 〉 70 years old ( OR = 4.827 , p 〈 0.01 versus ≤70 years old), chronic glomerulonephritis as the primary etiology ( OR = 2.565 , p 〈 0.05 versus nonchronic glomerulonephritis) and eGFR 〈 8.5 mL/min/1.73m2 ( OR = 2.283 , p 〈 0.05 versus eGFR ≥8.5 mL/min/1.73m2). Conclusion. The proportion of patients using arteriovenous fistula as the initial hemodialysis vascular access in Hangzhou was still low. The choice of vascular access for the first hemodialysis was related to age, eGFR, and the primary etiology of end-stage renal disease. Increasing the proportion of planned vascular access and arteriovenous fistula at the initiation of hemodialysis is still our current goal.

    Abstract: In this paper, a novel transmission policy referred as alternate distributed beamforming (ADB) for buffer-aided half-duplex (HD) multirelay systems is proposed, in which the relays are divided into two groups and activated alternately in their transmitter and receiver modes, with one group receiving the same information broadcast from the source while the other group simultaneously transmitting the common messages to the destination via distributed beamforming in each time slot. It is worth noting that the relays used for reception and transmission are determined without the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). Theoretical analysis of the achievable throughput of the proposed scheme in Rayleigh fading channels is provided, and the approximate closed-form expressions are derived for multiantenna relay scenario, with single-antenna relay scenario as a special case. Moreover, the asymptotic expressions for the maximum achievable throughput of the proposed scheme and corresponding optimal power allocation in the high- and low-SNR regimes are derived as well. Numerical results in accordance with theoretical analysis demonstrate that the proposed policy achieves a significant improvement in the maximum achievable throughput compared with benchmark schemes. It is shown that for the ADB scheme, the almost or exact symmetric relay grouping may achieve the best performance in the high-SNR regime. It is also shown that increasing the number of antennas equipped at each relay is better than increasing the number of relays equipped with a single antenna when the total number of antennas at the relays is fixed.

    Abstract: Vegetation growth is affected by both climate changes and human activities. In this study, we investigated the vegetation growth response to climate change (precipitation and temperature) and human activities in nine subregions and for nine vegetation types in China from 1982 to 2015. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the RESTREND method based on a multiple linear regression model were employed to this end. An overall increasing trend in the NDVI was observed in recent decades, and the fastest increases were identified in southern China (TrendNDVI = +0.0190) and evergreen broad-leaved forests (TrendNDVI = +0.0152). For 〉 66% of China, vegetation is more sensitive to temperature and less sensitive to precipitation based on the regression coefficients. The water demand for vegetative growth increased significantly from 1999 to 2015 with global warming, especially in parts of the temperate zone. We defined a relative change in the residual trend to quantify the impact of human activities on vegetation. RESTREND NDVI / NDVI in two periods (P1, 1982–1998 and P2, 1999–2015) markedly increased, indicating that human activities play a key role in the reversal of land degradation.
