    Abstract: Chitosan-silica (CS-SiO 2 ) hybrid microspheres were prepared through the combined process of sol-gel and emulsification-crosslinking. Their composition, morphology, in vitro bioactivity, and drug release behavior were investigated. The results showed that, when 20 wt% SiO 2 was incorporated, the as-prepared CS-SiO 2 hybrid microspheres exhibited a regular spherical shape, a high dispersity, and a uniform microstructure. Their average particle diameter was determined to be about 24.0  μ m. The in situ deposited inorganic phase of the hybrid microspheres was identified as amorphous SiO 2 , and its actual content was determined by the TG analysis. As compared with the pure chitosan microspheres, the CS-SiO 2 hybrid microspheres displayed a greatly improved in vitro bioactivity. Vancomycin hydrochloride (VH) was selected as a model drug. It was demonstrated that the CS-SiO 2 hybrid microspheres presented a good capacity for both loading and sustained release of VH. Moreover, the increase of the SiO 2 content efficiently slowed down the drug release rate of the CS-SiO 2 hybrid microspheres.

    Abstract: Background. The prognosis of IDH1-mutant glioma is significantly better than that of wild-type glioma, and the preoperative identification of IDH mutations in glioma is essential for the formulation of surgical procedures and prognostic assessment. Purpose. To explore the value of a radiomic model based on preoperative-enhanced MR images in the assessment of the IDH1 genotype in high-grade glioma. Materials and Methods. A retrospective analysis was performed on 182 patients with high-grade glioma confirmed by surgical pathology between December 2012 and January 2019 in our hospital with complete preoperative brain-enhanced MR images, including 79 patients with an IDH1 mutation (45 patients with WHO grade III and 34 patients with WHO grade IV) and 103 patients with wild-type IDH1 (33 patients with WHO grade III and 70 patients with WHO grade IV). Patients were divided into a primary dataset and a validation dataset at a ratio of 7 : 3 using a stratified random sampling; radiomic features were extracted using A.K. (Analysis Kit, GE Healthcare) software and were initially reduced using the Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman analyses. Lasso was finally conducted to obtain the optimized subset of the feature to build the radiomic model, and the model was then tested with cross-validation. ROC (receiver operating characteristic curve) analysis was performed to evaluate the performance of the model. Results. The radiomic model showed good discrimination in both the primary dataset ( AUC = 0.87 , 95% CI: 0.754 to 0.855, ACC = 0.798 , sensitivity = 85.5 % , specificity = 75.4 % , positive   predictive   value = 0.734 , and negative   predictive   value = 0.867 ) and the validation dataset ( AUC = 0.86 , 95% CI: 0.690 to 0.913, ACC = 0.789 , sensitivity = 91.3 % , specificity = 69.0 % , positive   predictive   value = 0.700 , and negative   predictive   value = 0.909 ). Conclusion. The radiomic model, based on the preoperative-enhanced MR, can effectively predict the IDH1 genotype in high-grade glioma.

    Abstract: Objective. To investigate the effect of intensive management and achieving the target control more than 3 times on endpoint events during 9 consecutive years’ annual assessment in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients in the Sanlitun Community Health Service Center in Beijing, including blood glucose, blood pressure, lipids profiles, and the joint target control. Methods. In Beijing Community Diabetes Study (BCDS), 224 patients with T2DM from the Sanlitun Community Health Service Center were enrolled in 2008. All patients were randomly assigned to the intensive management group ( n  = 113) and the standard management group ( n  = 111). All patients were followed up for nine consecutive years from January 2009 to December 2017. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were detected as the main indexes, and the endpoint events were also carried out at the same time. The endpoint events were analyzed by using survival analysis (Kaplan–Meier method) based on management grouping and whether achieving the target control more than 3 times or not. Results. During the nine-year follow-up, the abscission number was 35 (14.29%), among which 14 (12.39%) was in the intensive management group and 21 (18.92%) was in the standard management group. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy (6 cases, 5.41%) and diabetic nephropathy (13 cases, 11.71%) in the standard management group was significantly higher than that in the intensive management group (1 case, 0.88%; 5 cases, 4.42%), respectively ( P 〈 0.05 ). However, there were no significant differences on the other endpoint events between the two groups ( P 〉 0.05 ). All-cause death was 23 cases, in which patients who achieved the target control (HbA1c and LDL-C) and the joint target control more than 3 times were significantly lower than that of less than 3 times ( P 〈 0.05 ). As far as death caused by cardiovascular events, cerebrovascular events, and newly onset coronary heart disease are concerned, there were no significant differences on the aforementioned endpoint events between the two groups based on target control more than 3 times or not ( P 〉 0.05 ). There were less incidence of new onset cerebrovascular events, stenosis or occlusion of large arteries, and diabetic microvascular complications in patients who achieved target control (HbA1c and LDL-C) and the joint target control more than 3 times than those with target control less than 3 times ( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusions. The intensive management can effectively reduce the occurrence of microvascular complications. The incidence of all-cause death and the other endpoint events decreased in T2DM patients who achieved the joint target control more than 3 times during the nine-year management, which improved survival time and life quality. This trial is registered with ChiCTR-TRC-13003978 and ChiCTR-OOC-15006090 .

    Abstract: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is characterized by isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) with anosmia and is sometimes associated with cleft lip/palate (CLP). In order to describe the clinical features, genetic etiology, and treatment outcome of KS males with CLP, we performed genetic screening for 15 known causal IHH genes ( KAL1 , FGFR1 , NELF , FGF8 , CHD7 , WDR11 , SEMA3A , KISS1R , KISS1 , PROKR2 , PROK2 , TAC3 , TACR3 , GNRH1 , and GNRHR ) in four KS with CLP patients and six IHH patients without CLP. Two novel heterozygous missense mutations in FGFR1 , (NM_001174066): c.776G 〉 A (p.G259E) and (NM_001174066): c.358C 〉 T (p.R120C), were identified in a 23-year-old KS male with cleft lip and an 18-year-old KS patient with cleft lip and palate, dental agenesis, and high arched palate, respectively. These two mutations were not presented in their healthy parents and 200 normal controls. One novel heterozygous missense mutation in KISS1R , (NM_032551): c.587C 〉 A (p.P196H), was identified in an 18-year-old KS male with cleft lip and dental agenesis who developed sperm after being treated with gonadotropin. This mutation was also presented in his healthy father and grandfather. These results have implications for the diagnosis, genetic counseling, and treatment of KS and CLP males with mutations in FGFR1 gene.

    Abstract: Five new organogermanium sesquioxides have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectra. All the compounds were tested for antitumor activities against KB, HCT, and Bel cells in vitro. Compound 5 (-thiocarbamido propyl germanium sesquioxide) showed excellent antitumor activity, and its inhibition yield to KB, HCT, and Bel cells was 92.9%, 84.9%, and 70.9%, respectively. A rapid method was described for the labeling compound 5 with , and the optimum labeling conditions were investigated. The labeling yield is above 90% in pH 7.0, , reaction time greater than 10 minutes, 1 mg of compound 5, and 0.0750.1 mg of . The biodistribution of labeled compound 5 in nude mice bearing human colonic xenografts was studied. The result showed that the tumor uptakes were 0.73, 0.97, 0.87, and 0.62 ID%/g at 1-hour, 3-hour, 6-hour, and 20-hour postinjection, respectively. T/NT (the uptake ratio for per gram of tumor over normal tissues) was 18.3 for tumor versus brain and 5.81 for tumor versus muscle at 20-hour postinjection. The tumor clearance was slow. The results showed that compound 5 may be developed to be a suitable cancer therapeutic agent.

    Abstract: Immune cells play an important role in the development and progression of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the influence of adoptive cellular immunotherapy (CIT) on viral load and progression-free survival (PFS) for HCC patients infected with HCV. Patients ( n = 104 ) were divided into a control group (conventional therapy, n = 73 ) and study group (combination of CIT and conventional therapy, n = 31 ). Autologous mononuclear cells were induced into natural killer, γδ T, and cytokine-induced killer cells and infused intravenously to study group patients. More patients had shown viral load decrease or were stable in study group (100% versus 75%) ( p = 0.014 ). The median PFS of the study group and control group was 16 and 10 months, respectively ( p = 0.0041 ), and only CIT was an independent prognostic factor for PFS (hazard ratio, 0.422; p = 0.005 ). Three patients developed transient moderate fever after infusion, and there were no significant differences in alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels before and after treatment in both groups. Our results show that CIT contributes to improvement of prognosis and inhibition of viral replication in HCV-related HCC patients, without impairment of liver function.

    Abstract: Excessive energy consumption of UHF tag is the bottleneck of energy saving in its wide range of applications. To address this issue, a lower power design for UHF RF CMOS circuits based on power consumption acuity is proposed in this paper. Through in-depth analysis of the static and dynamic power generation principle of UHF RF circuits in the work, the power consumption acuity can be calculated by using the correlation of circuit power and input vector. Subsequently, under the guide of this acuity, the UHF RF CMOS circuits with better energy saving can be designed. Furthermore, according to the performance indicators of EPC CIG2 UHF RFID in UHF identification, the corresponding circuit is designed and implemented. The test results show that the design of UHF RF circuit based on the acuity of power consumption can reduce 35%–40% power consumption.

    Abstract: Black rice anthocyanins (BRAs) have extremely high nutritional value and health care effects. This study investigated the intervention effect of BRAs on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the regulation effect on intestinal microbiota imbalance in T2DM rats. This study established successfully a T2DM model in a high-fat and high-glucose diet combined with streptozotocin (STZ). BRAs intervention reduced significantly the fasting blood glucose level of T2DM rats, improved the glucose tolerance of rats, reduced the blood lipid level and inflammation state, and repaired liver, oxidative stress, and other injuries. In addition, BRAs’s intervention enhanced the expression of phosphoinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT), activated the expression of adenosine 5’-monophosphate-activated protein kinase(AMPK), and the downstream acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT1) in the liver. 16S rRNA sequencing showed that BRAs significantly decreased the abundances of Bifidobacterium and Clostridiaceae_Clostridium, and promoted the abundances of Akkermansia and Lactobacillus. Accelerate the recovery of gut microbiota diversity. BRAs play an antidiabetic role by regulating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and intestinal microbiota in T2MD rats.

    Abstract: Epidemiological studies have suggested that interleukin-17 ( IL-17 ) polymorphisms are associated with cancer risk. However, the results of these studies are inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to obtain a precise conclusion. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the association of the IL-17A rs2275913G 〉 A and IL-17F rs763780T 〉 C polymorphisms with cancer risk. Publication bias and sensitivity analyses were performed to ensure the statistical power. Overall, 10 relevant case-control studies involving 4,516 cases and 5,645 controls were included. The pooled ORs with 95% CIs indicated that the IL-17A rs2275913G 〉 A polymorphism was significantly associated with increased cancer risk (for A versus G: OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.16–1.41, P 〈 0.001 , I 2 = 61.1 %; for GA versus GG: OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02–1.23, P  = 0.015, I 2 = 27.8 %; for AA versus GG: OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.38–2.41, P 〈 0.001 , I 2 = 69.6 %; for GA + AA versus GG: OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.13–1.34, P 〈 0.001 , I 2 = 6.4 %; for AA versus GG + GA: OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.27–2.07, P 〈 0.001 , I 2 = 81.4 %). Succeeding analysis of HWE and stratified analysis of gastric cancer and the Asian (and Chinese) population revealed similar results. The IL-17F rs763780T 〉 C polymorphism was also significantly associated with gastric cancer development. Overall, the present meta-analysis suggests that IL-17 polymorphisms increase the risk of developing cancer, particularly gastric cancer, in the Asian (and Chinese) population.

    Abstract: Dental resin monomers such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) disturb vital cell functions and induce mitochondrial intrinsic apoptosis via generation of oxidative stress. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) regulates the gene expression of antioxidative enzymes and plays a crucial role in the maintenance of cellular redox equilibrium and mitochondrial homeostasis. The present study investigated the functional significance of Nrf2 in cellular response toward HEMA. It was found that HEMA stimulation promoted nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and increased Nrf2 and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression, which was further enhanced by Nrf2 activator tert- butylhydroquinone (tBHQ), but suppressed by Nrf2 inhibitor ML385. Pretreatment of primary human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) with tBHQ protected the cells from HEMA-induced oxidative injury (increased reactive oxygen species production and apoptosis) and mitochondrial impairment (morphological alterations, decreased ATP production, suppressed oxidative phosphorylation activity, depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, and disrupted electron transport chain). In contrast, pretreatment with ML385 increased cell sensitivity to these injurious processes. This protective effect on mitochondria could be related to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1 α (PGC1 α )/nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) pathway. These results contribute to the understanding of the function of Nrf2 and the development of novel therapies to counteract the adverse effects of dental resin monomers.
