Abstract: Background. Bushen Jianpi formula (BSJPF, also known as Lingmao formula) is a traditional Chinese medicine for chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The previous study has suggested that the treatment combination of BSJPF and entecavir (ETV) can achieve a significant loss of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and a significant decrease in serum level of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in HBeAg-positive CHB patients with mildly elevated alanine aminotransferase. Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BSJPF combined with ETV for treating HBeAg-negative CHB patients. Methods. A total of 640 patients were assigned randomly to the treatment group (receiving BSJPF combined with ETV for 96 weeks) or the control group (receiving a placebo combined with ETV for 96 weeks) in a 1 : 1 ratio. The primary endpoints are the rate of loss of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The secondary outcomes included the rate of decrease in the HBsAg concentration to ≥1 lg·IU/mL, the HBV DNA suppression, the decline of the level of covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) in the liver, histological improvements, and the rate of ALT normalization. Results. The rate of HBsAg loss in the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the control group (5.5% versus 1.8%, P = 0.031 ). There were 11.1% of patients in the treatment group who recorded a reduction in HBsAg ≥1 lg·IU/mL, which is better than 5.9% of patients in the control group ( P = 0.043 ). There was no significant difference between the two groups with regard to the rate of HBV DNA clearance, the reduction in intrahepatic cccDNA, and the rate of ALT normalization ( P 〉 0.05 ). The rate of liver fibrosis improvement in the treatment group was better than that of the control group (35.5% versus 11.8%, P = 0.031 ), but there was no difference in necroinflammatory improvement ( P 〉 0.05 ). The adverse events (AEs) were similar between the two groups, except for the abnormal kidney function, with 2.2% in the control group and 0.0% in the treatment group ( P = 0.028 ). Conclusion. The combination of BSJPF and ETV can increase the rate of HBsAg loss and the rate of histological fibrosis improvement without serious adverse events in CHB patients. Trial Registration. This trial is registered with ChiCTR-IOR-16009880 on November 16, 2016—retrospectively registered, http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=16836.

Abstract: This study was designed to determine the therapeutic efficacy and safety of the Shi-cha capsule, a Chinese herbal formula, in the treatment of patients with wind-cold type common cold. In our multi-center, prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation trial, patients with wind-cold type common cold received 0.6 g of Shi-cha capsule plus 0.6 g placebo (group A), 1.2 g of Shi-cha capsule (group B), or 1.2 g placebo (group C), three times daily for 3 days and followed up to 10 days. The primary end point was all symptom duration. The secondary end points were main symptom duration, minor symptom duration, the changes in cumulative symptom score, main symptom score, and minor symptom score 4 days after the treatment, as well as adverse events. A total of 377 patients were recruited and 360 met the inclusive criteria; 120 patients constituted each treatment group. Compared with patients in group C, patients in groups A and B had significant improvement in the all symptom duration, main symptom duration, minor symptom duration, as well as change from baseline of cumulative symptom score, main symptom score, and minor symptom score at day 4. The symptom durations and scores showed slight superiority of group B over group A, although these differences were not statistically significant. There were no differences in adverse events. The Shi-cha capsule is efficacious and safe for the treatment of patients with wind-cold type common cold. Larger trials are required to fully assess the benefits and safety of this treatment for common cold.

Abstract: Residual stress has significant influence on the performance of mechanical components, and the nondestructive estimation of residual stress is always a difficult problem. This study applies the relative nonlinear coefficient of critical refraction longitudinal ( L C R ) wave to nondestructively characterize the stress state of materials; the feasibility of residual stress estimation using the nonlinear property of L C R wave is verified. The nonlinear ultrasonic measurements based on L C R wave are conducted on components with known stress state to calculate the relative nonlinear coefficient. Experimental results indicate that the relative nonlinear coefficient monotonically increases with prestress and the increment of relative nonlinear coefficient is about 80%, while the wave velocity only decreases about 0.2%. The sensitivity of the relative nonlinear coefficient for stress is much higher than wave velocity. Furthermore, the dependence between the relative nonlinear coefficient and deformation state of components is found. The stress detection resolution based on the nonlinear property of L C R wave is 10 MPa, which has higher resolution than wave velocity. These results demonstrate that the nonlinear property of L C R wave is more suitable for stress characterization than wave velocity, and this quantitative information could be used for residual stress estimation.

Abstract: Objectives. Acupoint catgut embedding therapy has shown effectiveness in treating functional constipation; however, relevant, high-quality clinical evidence is scarce. This study aimed to systematically assess the effectiveness and safety of acupoint catgut embedding in treating poststroke constipation. Methods. Correlative randomized controlled trials were identified through a comprehensive literature search of PubMed, Cochrane Library/Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Internet, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Wanfang, and VIP databases from inception until February 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. Results. Fifteen trials involving 1084 patients were identified. The meta-analysis revealed that the acupoint catgut embedding group was significantly superior to the non-catgut embedding group with regard to the efficacy rate (RR = 1.27, 95% CI (1.19, 1.37), P 〈 0.05 ), the first defecation time (MD = −3.08, 95% CI (−4.53, −1.63), P 〈 0.05 ), the defecation sensation score (MD = −0.44, 95% CI (−0.61, −0.26), P 〈 0.05 ), the degree of difficulty in defecation (MD = −0.73, 95% CI (−1.10, −0.37), P 〈 0.05 ), the PAC-QOL scale score (MD = −10.06, 95% CI (−13.47, −6.64), P 〈 0.05 ), and the symptom integral (MD = −3.15, 95% CI (−3.60, −2.71), P 〈 0.05 ). However, there was no significant difference in the stool property score (MD = 0.06, 95% CI (−0.39, 0.50), P 〉 0.05 ) as well as the incidence of adverse reactions (RD = 0.01, 95% CI (−0.01, 0.03), P 〉 0.05 ) between the two groups. Conclusions. The results showed that acupoint catgut embedding is probably an effective and safe acupuncture treatment strategy for poststroke constipation. Nevertheless, more rigorously designed, standardized, large-sample, and multicenter randomized controlled designs are warranted to further verify the findings of this study.

Abstract: A comparative study on the photophysical, electrochemical properties and photovoltaic performances of pure imidazole dyes containing varying linker groups is done. Two new organic dyes containing 4,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1 H -imidazole (BPI) unit as an electron donor, boron dipyrromethene (Bodipy) chromophore as a conjugate bridge, cyanoacetic acid as an electron acceptor, and phenylene (BPI-P) or thienyl (BPI-T) as a additional linker have been synthesized for fabricating dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). A reference dye (DPI-T) with 6,9-dimethoxy-1 H -phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole as the donor has also been synthesized for comparison. The overall conversion efficiencies of 0.18%, 0.32%, and 1.28% were obtained for DSSCs based on BPI-P, BPI-T, and DPI-T, respectively. DPI-T was found to be more efficient than BPI-P and BPI-T because of its enhanced light harvesting efficiency and better coplanar geometry of the electronic structure.

Abstract: Purpose. Jie-Du-Hua-Yu (JDHY) granules are a traditional Chinese medicine with known therapeutic effects for the treatment of acute liver failure (ALF). This study explored the potential molecular mechanism(s) of JDHY granules in promoting liver regeneration and preventing ALF. Methods. Rat models of ALF were constructed through administration of D-galactosamine (D-GalN) (600 mg/kg) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) (20 μg/kg). Rats were gavaged with JDHY granules, and serum and liver samples were collected at 12 h post-D-GalN/LPS administration. The degree of liver injury was evaluated through hepatic pathology and alanine/aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST) activity. miRNA chips were used to detect the miRNA expression profiles of rat models. Bioinformatics analysis was used to identify the biological processes and cell signaling pathways mediating the therapeutic effects of JDHY. Real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and western blotting were used to validate the data. Results. JDHY granules could effectively decrease the levels of ALT and AST, relieve D-GalN/LPS-induced liver injury, and improve hepatic function. JDHY granules were found to regulate the expression of 20 miRNAs and 19 mRNAs, which influenced 21 biological processes and 9 signaling pathways. Upon analysis of the therapeutic mechanism(s) governing the effects of JDHY granules on liver regeneration, enhanced DNA replication and an improved cholesterol metabolic ratio were identified. JDHY granules were also found to increase the expression of MCM3, CDK4, and TC, confirming the involvement of these pathways. Moreover, JDHY granules were found to promote hepatocyte mitosis and inhibit the progression of ALF. Conclusion. JDHY granules protect against D-GalN/LPS-induced ALF in rats by promoting liver regeneration through enhanced DNA replication and an improved cholesterol metabolic ratio.

Abstract: Objective. To investigate the effect of intensive management and achieving the target control more than 3 times on endpoint events during 9 consecutive years’ annual assessment in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients in the Sanlitun Community Health Service Center in Beijing, including blood glucose, blood pressure, lipids profiles, and the joint target control. Methods. In Beijing Community Diabetes Study (BCDS), 224 patients with T2DM from the Sanlitun Community Health Service Center were enrolled in 2008. All patients were randomly assigned to the intensive management group ( n  = 113) and the standard management group ( n  = 111). All patients were followed up for nine consecutive years from January 2009 to December 2017. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were detected as the main indexes, and the endpoint events were also carried out at the same time. The endpoint events were analyzed by using survival analysis (Kaplan–Meier method) based on management grouping and whether achieving the target control more than 3 times or not. Results. During the nine-year follow-up, the abscission number was 35 (14.29%), among which 14 (12.39%) was in the intensive management group and 21 (18.92%) was in the standard management group. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy (6 cases, 5.41%) and diabetic nephropathy (13 cases, 11.71%) in the standard management group was significantly higher than that in the intensive management group (1 case, 0.88%; 5 cases, 4.42%), respectively ( P 〈 0.05 ). However, there were no significant differences on the other endpoint events between the two groups ( P 〉 0.05 ). All-cause death was 23 cases, in which patients who achieved the target control (HbA1c and LDL-C) and the joint target control more than 3 times were significantly lower than that of less than 3 times ( P 〈 0.05 ). As far as death caused by cardiovascular events, cerebrovascular events, and newly onset coronary heart disease are concerned, there were no significant differences on the aforementioned endpoint events between the two groups based on target control more than 3 times or not ( P 〉 0.05 ). There were less incidence of new onset cerebrovascular events, stenosis or occlusion of large arteries, and diabetic microvascular complications in patients who achieved target control (HbA1c and LDL-C) and the joint target control more than 3 times than those with target control less than 3 times ( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusions. The intensive management can effectively reduce the occurrence of microvascular complications. The incidence of all-cause death and the other endpoint events decreased in T2DM patients who achieved the joint target control more than 3 times during the nine-year management, which improved survival time and life quality. This trial is registered with ChiCTR-TRC-13003978 and ChiCTR-OOC-15006090 .

Abstract: The binding of irbesartan to bovine hemoglobin (BHb) has been investigated for the first time by using UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD), and molecular docking. The binding site number n and binding constant K were calculated to be 1 and , respectively. The alternations of protein secondary structure in the presence of irbesartan was demonstrated using CD spectroscopy. Furthermore, molecular docking indicated that irbesartan could bind to the site 2 of BHb. The analysis of the binding site of irbesartan within the BHb molecule suggested that hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bond formation, and electrostatic interaction could account for the binding of irbesartan. The hydrogen bond of irbesartan with His87 in the C chain of BHb has been formed. The electrostatic energy, van der Waals energy, and binding free energy were calculated to be −460.3, −224.2, and−684.5 kcal, respectively.

Abstract: This paper describes a fabrication and characterization of ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors based on Ohmic contacts using Pt electrode onto the epitaxial ZnO (0002) thin film. Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system was employed to deposit ZnO (0002) thin films onto silicon substrates, and radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering was used to deposit Pt top electrode onto the ZnO thin films. The as-deposited Pt/ZnO nanobilayer samples were then annealed at 450 ∘ C in two different ambients (argon and nitrogen) to obtain optimal Ohmic contacts. The crystal structure, surface morphology, optical properties, and wettability of ZnO thin films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL), UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer, and contact angle meter, respectively. Moreover, the photoconductivity of the Pt/ZnO nanobilayers was also investigated for UV photodetector application. The above results showed that the optimum ZnO sample was synthesized with gas flow rate ratio of 1 : 3 diethylzinc [DEZn, Zn(C 2 H 5 ) 2 ] to carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and then combined with Pt electrode annealed at 450 ∘ C in argon ambient, exhibiting good crystallinity as well as UV photo responsibility.
