Abstract: The traditional medical image fusion methods, such as the famous multi-scale decomposition-based methods, usually suffer from the bad sparse representations of the salient features and the low ability of the fusion rules to transfer the captured feature information. In order to deal with this problem, a medical image fusion method based on the scale invariant feature transformation (SIFT) descriptor and the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) in the shift-invariant shearlet transform (SIST) domain is proposed. Firstly, the images to be fused are decomposed into the high-pass and the low-pass coefficients. Then, the fusion of the high-pass components is implemented under the rule based on the pre-trained CNN model, which mainly consists of four steps: feature detection, initial segmentation, consistency verification, and the final fusion; the fusion of the low-pass subbands is based on the matching degree computed by the SIFT descriptor to capture the features of the low frequency components. Finally, the fusion results are obtained by inversion of the SIST. Taking the typical standard deviation, QAB/F, entropy, and mutual information as the objective measurements, the experimental results demonstrate that the detailed information without artifacts and distortions can be well preserved by the proposed method, and better quantitative performance can be also obtained.

Abstract: As an important part of the traditional Chinese medicine system, Tibetan medicine has its unique treatment methods for diabetes mellitus and its complications. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most serious diabetic microvascular diseases. Tibetan medicine believes that the occurrence of DN is closely related to renal function changes, and it can be effectively prevented and treated by improving renal lesions. In this paper, we consult ancient books of Tibetan medicine and summarize the medicines that treat kidney disease in the Tibetan medicine system. The Chinese name, English name, and Latin name of these drugs were searched as keywords in the online database. Thirty-four drugs were found for the treatment of DN. The most commonly used were Amomum kravanh, Terminalia chebula, and Tribulus terrestris, and we introduced the traditional uses and modern pharmacological activities of these drugs. The results indicate that Tibetan medicines for kidney disease could be used as potential candidate drugs for DN; they would expand the range of medications for DN and provide a new idea for the treatment of DN.

Abstract: Ultrahigh temperature (UHT) pasteurization is often used to sterilize liquid whole eggs in egg processing enterprises in China. Although this treatment generates satisfactory sterilization effect, there are few studies on the processing characteristics and physical and chemical properties of the liquid whole eggs treated by UHT pasteurization. We compared the physical and chemical properties (i.e., foaming ability and stability, emulsification ability and stability, viscosity, thiol content, gel strength, and color) of unsterilized eggs and liquid whole eggs pasteurized with UHT over five weeks of storage. The emulsifying properties of sterilized liquid whole eggs were initially low and decreased further with the storage time. The emulsification stability index of UHT-pasteurized liquid whole eggs was higher than that of unsterilized eggs and increased by 21.9%, from 7.850 to 9.567. The foaming ability of UHT-pasteurized and unsterilized liquid whole eggs increased by 33.38% and 15.48%, respectively. The viscosity, gel strength, and soluble protein content were higher in UHT-pasteurized liquid whole eggs than those in unsterilized liquid whole eggs and increased further with storage time. Our results demonstrate that UHT pasteurization preserves and improves the processing characteristics and shelf life of liquid whole eggs.

Abstract: Promoting green consumption is key in meeting ambitious sustainable fashion targets being set around the world. This research examined how framing of green message as positive or negative (i.e., benefit framing) influenced formation of sustainable consumption behaviors of fashion (SCBF) based on the cross-theoretical model and, especially, how self-efficacy, decision balancing, and perceiving threats-mediated green message framing effects. Data were collected from 217 Chinese residents in an online experiment. Our findings show that green message framing has different effects on individuals in different change stages of SCBF and loss framing-based green messages induce more positive responses toward SCBF with greater perceived threats in the pre-intention and intention stages, while gain framing-based green messages might stimulate positive behaviors toward SCBF with greater perceived benefits in the preparation and action and maintenance stages. Results suggest that highlighting green message expression in relating to SCBF may be useful for promoting broader sustainable behaviors. Therefore, this article significantly fills the gaps between green message framing and SCBF. The findings of this article have significant implications for fashion companies who wish to explore the fashion green market potential.

Abstract: Silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) has been reported to inhibit osteoarthritic gene expression in chondrocytes. Here, efforts in this study were made to unveil the specific role of SIRT1 in the therapy of acupuncture on cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis (OA). Specifically, OA was established by the anterior cruciate ligament transection method in the right knee joint of rats, subsequent to which acupuncture was performed on two acupoints. Injection with shSIRT1 sequence–inserted lentiviruses was conducted to investigate the role of SIRT1 in acupuncture-mediated OA. Morphological changes and cell apoptosis in rat OA cartilages were examined by safranin-O staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay, respectively. The serum levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-2 in OA rats were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expressions of SIRT1, cartilage matrix degradation-related proteins (matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and ADAMTS5), NF-κB signaling-related markers (p-p65/p65 and p-IκBα/IκBα), and cartilage matrix synthesis-related proteins (collagen II and aggrecan) in the OA cartilage were analyzed by western blot. As a result, acupuncture counteracted OA-associated upregulation of TNF-α, IL-2, cartilage matrix degradation-related proteins, and NF-κB signaling-related markers, morphological damage, apoptosis, SIRT1 downregulation, and loss of cartilage matrix synthesis-related proteins in rat articular cartilages. SIRT1 silencing reversed acupuncture-induced counteractive effects on the aforementioned OA-associated phenomena (except apoptosis, the experiment regarding which under SIRT1 silencing was not performed). Collectively, acupuncture inhibited chondrocyte apoptosis, inflammation, NF-κB signaling activation, and cartilage matrix degradation by upregulating SIRT1 expression to delay OA-associated cartilage degeneration.

Abstract: Ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal gynecologic malignancies for women. Due to the lack of efficient target therapy, the overall survival rate for patients with advanced ovarian cancer is still low. Illustrating the molecular mechanisms dictating ovarian cancer progression is critically important to develop novel therapeutic agents. Here, we found that RNA-binding motif protein 11 (RBM11) was highly elevated in ovarian cancer tissues compared with normal ovary, while RBM11 depletion in ovarian cancer cells resulted in impaired cell growth and invasion. Moreover, knockdown of RBM11 also retarded tumor growth in the A2780 ovarian cancer xenograft model. Mechanically, we found that RBM11 positively regulated Akt/mTOR signaling pathway activation in ovarian cancer cells. Thus, these results identify RBM11 is a novel oncogenic protein and prognostic biomarker for ovarian cancers.

Abstract: To overcome the disadvantages of the traditional block-matching-based image denoising method, an image denoising method based on block matching with 4D filtering (BM4D) in the 3D shearlet transform domain and a generative adversarial network is proposed. Firstly, the contaminated images are decomposed to get the shearlet coefficients; then, an improved 3D block-matching algorithm is proposed in the hard threshold and wiener filtering stage to get the latent clean images; the final clean images can be obtained by training the latent clean images via a generative adversarial network (GAN).Taking the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM for short) of image, and edge-preserving index (EPI for short) as the evaluation criteria, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can not only effectively remove image noise in high noisy environment, but also effectively improve the visual effect of the images.

Abstract: The immune activity of polysaccharides increases after structural modification, whereas the structure of dietary fiber is similar to that of polysaccharides, and research on the chemical modification of dietary fiber is lacking. Therefore, in this study, we used soluble dietary fiber from millet to chelate metal selenium ions, named the selenium-enriched additive (SDF-Se), and investigated its effects on macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells in vitro. The results showed that SDF-Se could activate RAW 264.7 cells through NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling and promote the accumulation of the reactive oxygen species, thereby increasing the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10 and releasing numerous NO molecules. Furthermore, SDF-Se treatment induced NK cells to secrete cytokines (IFN-γ and TNF-α), cytoplasmic granules (granzyme-B), surface-activating receptors (NKp44), and increased CD56 and CD107a expressions, which promote NK cell cytotoxic responses. These results suggest that SDF-Se can promote macrophage and NK cell activation and be used as a potent immunostimulant.

Abstract: Qiliqiangxin capsule (QLC), a natural herb recipe with therapeutic effect from China, has been widely used in clinical practice for attenuating cardiac remodeling induced by myocardial infarction (MI). However, the pharmacological mechanism of QLC on cardiac remodeling after MI is not entirely clear. The present study aims to investigate the effectiveness and mechanisms of QLC on cardiac remodeling induced by MI in rats. The animal model was established by permanently ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery in rats. Subsequently, rats with successful ligation were randomly divided into model group, captopril group, and QLC group. And the control group was operated upon in parallel except ligation, namely, the sham group. All rats were treated through the intragastric administration once a day for 4 weeks. Cardiac hemodynamics was measured after treatment. Then, the left ventricular mass index (LVMI) was examined. The pathological changes were observed by HE staining. The collagen volume fraction (CVF) was detected by Masson trichrome staining. The apoptosis index was obtained by TUNEL fluorescent staining. The miR-133a and mRNA of TGF- β 1, CTGF, Caspase9, and Caspase3 were examined by real-time PCR. The protein expressions of TGF- β 1, CTGF, Caspase9, Caspase3, and cleaved-Caspase3 were tested by Western blot. Compared with the model group, QLC partially improved cardiac hemodynamics and decreased LVMI. miR-133a was significantly increased in QLC group. In addition, QLC declined CVF by downregulating TGF- β 1 rather than CTGF. Meanwhile, QLC decreased the apoptosis index by attenuating Caspase9, Caspase3, and cleaved-Caspase3. This study suggested that QLC could improve cardiac function and partially attenuate cardiac remodeling by attenuating fibrosis and decreasing apoptosis, which might be partially related to miR-133a, TGF- β 1, Caspase9, and Caspase3.
