    Abstract: Background. Emergency gingival uncontrollable bleeding after nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) could be caused by a variety of factors; local oral factors are the main cause of gingival bleeding in most patients. Because the doctor will do a good job of evaluating the patient’s physical condition before nonsurgical periodontal therapy. This study is subjected to evaluate the possible factors associated with emergency uncontrollable bleeding within 24-48 hours after NSPT. Material and Methods. A total of fifty-eight patients with emergency bleeding after NSPT in the past four years were enrolled. The related factors in patients, such as age, gender, clotting function, systemic diseases, and baseline periodontitis severity, were analyzed. The site-related factors, such as tooth type, tooth distribution, and alveolar bone resorption at the bleeding site, were compared. The possible relationship of the parameters to the causes of emergency bleeding with NSPT was also evaluated. Results. Gingival bleeding after NSPT was registered. In this retrospective study, a total of 58 patients were selected. There were 29 males and 29 females, aged from 20 to 67 years old, with an average age of 35.21 ± 10.09 years. Among them, 8.6% were over 50 years old, and 91.4% were under 50 years old. Completed evaluations were performed in 15.5% gingivitis and 84.5% periodontitis. The causes of emergency bleeding after nonsurgical periodontal therapy in this study were residual subgingival calculus or granulation tissue in 63.79% of cases: severe gingival inflammation, 29.32%; gum trauma, 3.45%; and poor compliance, 3.45%. The therapy method before bleeding includes supragingival scaling accounted for 72.4% and subgingival scaling accounted for 27.6%. 23 cases of horizontal absorption at the bleeding site accounted for 39.66%, and 35 cases of angular absorption accounted for 60.34%. Bleeding of maxillary posterior teeth accounted for 34.48%; mandibular anterior teeth accounted for 15.52%; mandibular anterior teeth accounted for 8.62%; and mandibular posterior teeth accounted for 18.97%; multiple sites accounted for 22.41%; eliminating residual subgingival calculus and granulation tissue were the main and most effective hemostatic methods, 86.21%. Conclusion. Residual subgingival calculus or granulation tissue and severe gingival inflammation were the main causes of emergency gingival bleeding after nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Severe gingival inflammation causing emergency bleeding was more common in maxillary posterior teeth areas. Angular alveolar bone resorption was more likely to cause bleeding than horizontal resorption. Careful debridement of residual subgingival calculus and granulation tissue was the main hemostatic method.

    Abstract: In order to screen lignocellulose-degrading superior mushroom strains ten strains of mushrooms ( Lentinus edodes939 , Pholiota nameko , Lentinus edodes868 , Coprinus comatus , Macrolepiota procera , Auricularia auricula , Hericium erinaceus , Grifola frondosa , Pleurotus nebrodensis , and Shiraia bambusicola ) were inoculated onto carboxymethylcellulose agar-Congo red plates to evaluate their ability to produce carbomethyl cellulase (CMCase). The results showed that the ratio of transparent circle to mycelium circle of Hericium erinaceus was 8.16 ( P 〈 0.01 ) higher than other strains. The filter paper culture screening test showed that Hericium erinaceus and Macrolepiota procera grew well and showed extreme decomposition of the filter paper. When cultivated in guaiacol culture medium to detect their abilities to secrete laccase, Hericium erinaceus showed the highest ability with the largest reddish brown circles of 4.330 cm. CMCase activity determination indicated that Coprinus comatus and Hericium erinaceus had the ability to produce CMCase with 33.92 U/L on the 9th day and 22.58 U/L on the 10th day, respectively, while Coprinus comatus and Pleurotus nebrodensis had the ability to produce laccase with 496.67 U/L and 489.17 U/L on the 16th day and 18th day. Based on the results, Coprinus comatus might be the most promising lignocellulose-degrading strain to produce both CMCase and laccase at high levels.

    Abstract: In previous studies, Gentianella acuta (Michx.) Hulten was reported to contain xanthones, iridoids, terpenoids, and sterols and is mainly used to cure hepatitis, jaundice, fever, headache, and angina pectoris. In this study, we used bioassay guided fractionation to identify compounds from G. acuta and investigated their activity against hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )-induced apoptosis of H9c2 cells using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. The levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic (GCLC) expression were assessed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Protein expression was evaluated using western blot. The results showed that all four compounds had protective effects on H9c2 cells. The transcription levels of HO-1 and GCLC significantly increased in H9c2 cells pretreated with norswertianolin ( 1 ), swetrianolin ( 2 ), demethylbellidifolin ( 3 ), and bellidifolin ( 4 ). However, compared to the model group, the transcription levels of Nrf2 were not enhanced by pretreatment with compounds 1 , 2 , and 4 . The protein expression levels of HO-1 and GCLC in H9c2 cells were greater than that in the H 2 O 2 -treated group, and the expression of Nrf2 was not significantly changed except by swetrianolin treatment; inhibitors can reverse the protective effect by ZnPP (15  μ M), BSO (10  μ M), and brusatol (10  μ M). The results indicated that the four compounds isolated from G. acuta inhibited the oxidative injury induced by H 2 O 2 by activating the Nrf2/ARE pathway in H9c2 cells and provide evidence that G. acuta may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

    Abstract: To investigate the effect of the soy protein concentrate (CSP) and 7S and 11S soy globulin on wheat dough and steamed bread (SB), mixing properties of the dough were assessed by farinograph and dynamic-mechanical analyzer (DMA). The quality attributes of SB were assessed by texture profile analyzer (TPA), sensory analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that CSP, 7S, or 11S (each from 2.0 to 4.0%) significantly decreased gluten content (from 29.4 to 26.0, 36.7 to 31.8, and 31.6 to 30.7%), when those were added to wheat flour. The CSP/wheat dough stability was increased (from 6.5 to 8.4, 6.5 to 8.5, and 6.5 to 8.3 min) and the degree of softening was decreased (from 71.0 to 68.0, 71.0 to 64.0, and 71.0 to 62.0 min), but 7S or 11S had the opposite result. Moreover, the ratio of 7S and 11S has a significant effect on the quality of the dough. The storage modulus and loss modulus of soy/wheat dough decreased in the order of CSP, control, 11S soy globulin, and 7S soy globulin. The hardness, chewiness, and cohesiveness of SB decreased in the order of control, CSP, 11S soy globulin, and 7S soy globulin. Microstructure demonstrated that gluten network was interfered by SPC, 7S, and 11S soy protein, which was in agreement with the texture analysis index. The quality of SB with 3% 11S was the best in texture, microstructure, and sensory. These findings indicate that 11S has the potential to be used as a special soy protein for SB making.

    Abstract: Objectives . To evaluate the reporting quality of published randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in the Tai Chi literature following the publication of the CONSORT guidelines in 2001. Data Sources . The OVID MEDLINE and PUBMED databases. Review Methods . To survey the general characteristics of Tai Chi RCTs in the literature, we included any report if (i) it was an original report of the trial; (ii) its design was RCT; (iii) one of the treatments being tested was Tai Chi; and (iv) it was in English. In addition, we assessed the reporting quality of RCTs that were published between 2002 and 2007, using a modified CONSORT checklist of 40 items. The adequate description of Tai Chi interventions in these trials was examined against a 10-item checklist adapted from previous reviews. Results . The search yielded 31 Tai Chi RCTs published from 2002 to 2007 and only 11 for 1992–2001. Among trials published during 2002–2007, the most adequately reported criteria were related to background, participant eligibility and interpretation of the study results. Nonetheless, the most poorly reported items were associated with randomization allocation concealment, implementation of randomization and the definitions of period of recruitment and follow-up. In addition, only 23% of RCTs provided adequate details of Tai Chi intervention used in the trials. Conclusion . The findings in this review indicated that the reporting quality of Tai Chi intervention trials is sub-optimal. Substantial improvement is required to meet the CONSORT guidelines and allow assessment of the quality of evidence. We believe that not only investigators, but also journal editors, reviewers and funding agencies need to follow the CONSORT guidelines to improve the standards of research and strengthen the evidence base for Tai Chi and for complementary and alternative medicine.

    Abstract: This paper develops two novel and fast Riemannian second-order approaches for solving a class of matrix trace minimization problems with orthogonality constraints, which is widely applied in multivariate statistical analysis. The existing majorization method is guaranteed to converge but its convergence rate is at best linear. A hybrid Riemannian Newton-type algorithm with both global and quadratic convergence is proposed firstly. A Riemannian trust-region method based on the proposed Newton method is further provided. Some numerical tests and application to the least squares fitting of the DEDICOM model and the orthonormal INDSCAL model are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods. Comparisons with some latest Riemannian gradient-type methods and some existing Riemannian second-order algorithms in the MATLAB toolbox Manopt are also presented.

    Abstract: The prognosis of over 90% of infant acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) remains poor because of harboring the mixed-lineage leukemia gene (MLL) fusion. To give insight into the critical coexpressed genes related to the MLL-rearrangement (MLL-R) gene in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, we integrated different bioinformatic methods. First, the gene expression data of MLL-R ALL and normal samples from GSE13159 and GSE13164 were analyzed using “compare” function in the Oncomine database. The top 150 overexpressed and 150 underexpressed genes were identified by the Oncomine website. Then, we employed the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) to define functional genes for the 300 DEGs. The Cytoscape identified two important networks for overexpressed genes, including 35 functional genes, among which PROM1, FLT3, CTGF, LGALS1, IGFBP7, ZNRF1, and RUNX2 were considered as the key genes because of their high expression in MLL-R ALL compared to the expression in other subclassification of leukemia in the MILE dataset. Further analysis of GSE68720, GSE19475, and Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) ALL (phase I) database confirmed the robust expression of 7 key genes in MLL-R compared to MLL-germline (MLL-G) childhood ALL. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that childhood ALL patients with high PROM1 and CTGF expression had significantly poor overall survival. These findings suggest that PROM1 and CTGF represent two potential therapeutic targets for childhood MLL-R ALL.
