    Abstract: The reference ranges of bone turnover markers (BTMs) were important during the treatment of osteoporosis, and the associations with bone mineral density (BMD) were controversial. The aim of this study was to establish the reference ranges of N-terminal procollagen of type l collagen (P1NP), osteocalcin (OC), and beta C-terminal cross-linked telopeptides of type I collagen ( β -CTX) in Shanghai area and to investigate the relationships between BTMs and BMD in postmenopausal women. 2,799 subjects recruited in Shanghai City were measured BTMs to establish the reference ranges. Additional 520 healthy postmenopausal women were also measured BTMs, these women measured BMD in addition. BTMs were measured using the Roche electrochemiluminescence system. We used the age range of 35 to 45-year-olds to calculate reference intervals. The reference range of OC was 4.91 to 13.90 ng/mL for women and 5.58 to 16.57 ng/mL for men, P1NP was 13.72 to 32.90 ng/mL for women and 16.89 to 42.43 ng/mL for men, and β -CTX was 0.112 to 0.210 ng/mL for women and 0.100 to 0.378 ng/mL for men. BTMs significantly negatively correlated with lumbar spine and femoral and total hip in postmenopausal women ( = −0.157 ~ −0.217, P 〈 0.001). We established the normal reference ranges of P1NP, OC, and β -CTX in the Shanghai area. This study also found that BTMs correlated with BMD and suggested that BTMs were the key determining factors of early BMD decreases.

    Abstract: To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation training in patients with intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired muscle weakness (ICUAW), a single-blinded, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial is designed for execution. In total, 56 participants with ICUAW will be randomly assigned to the treatment and control groups with 28 participants in each group. The participants will be treated with acupunctures or sham procedures at LI15, LI11, ST36, GB34, and ST31, 5 times per week for a total of 20 sessions in 4 weeks while they will receive rehabilitation training. Patients will be followed up every month for 3 months after treatment. The primary outcomes include changes in quadriceps femoris muscle area, thickness, vastus intermediate muscle thickness, subcutaneous tissue thickness, and ultrasonic intensities of the rectus femoris. The secondary outcomes consist of the modified Barthel index score and the Medical Research Council total score. Participants’ mechanical ventilation, the rate of detachment at the second week, the 28-day survival rate, and the occurrence of adverse reactions will be measured, and any side effects will be reported and recorded. Patient outcomes between the treatment and control groups will be compared and statistically tested. We anticipate that the therapeutic regimen of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation training would be more effective than the rehabilitation training alone for the treatment of the ICUAW. The findings of this study could help develop a better strategy for the treatment of the ICUAW disease and explore a clinical application of an acupuncture technique.     Abstract: Hybrid rice breeding using cytoplasmic male sterility/fertility restoration (CMS/ Rf ) systems plays an important role in ensuring global food security. Two backcross inbred line (BIL) populations derived from either Xieqingzao B (XB)//XB/Dongxiang wild rice (DWR) (XXD) or XB//DWR/XB (XDX) were used to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for fertility restoration of Dwarf wild abortive- (DA-), Indonesia Paddy- (ID-), and DWR-type CMS in rice. Lines with ID- and DA-type CMS were testcrossed with both the XXD- and XDX-BILs, while the line with DWR-type CMS was testcrossed with the XDX-BILs only. A total of 16 QTLs for fertility restoration of CMS systems were identified, including three for DWR-type CMS, six for DA-type CMS, and seven for ID-type CMS. All of the additive alleles in the QTLs were derived from Oryza rufipogon . Eleven QTLs were clustered in five chromosomal regions, indicating that common Rf loci restored different CMS systems, and the favorable O . rufipogon alleles could be used to develop restorer lines for various CMS types by marker-assisted selection.

    Abstract: Curcumin is extracted from the rhizomes of the ginger family plant Curcuma longa L., which has a good protection for liver, kidney, and immune system. However, there is little information about its contribution in protection of astrocytes recently. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the protective effect of curcumin, an herbal antioxidant, on 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion- (MPP + -) and lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced cytotoxicities, as well as the underlying mechanisms by using primary mouse mesencephalic astrocytes. The results showed that curcumin protected the mesencephalic astrocytes from MPP + - and LPS-induced toxicities along with reducing reactive oxygen species ( P 〈 0.05 ) and maleic dialdehyde ( P 〈 0.05 ) sufficiently. Moreover, curcumin significantly inhibited the cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) expression ( P 〈 0.01 at mRNA level, P 〈 0.05 at protein level) and its activity ( P 〈 0.05 ) sufficiently induced by MPP + and LPS in the mouse mesencephalic astrocytes. And curcumin as well as diallyl sulphide, a CYP2E1 positive inhibitor, ameliorated MPP + - and LPS-induced mouse mesencephalic astrocytes damage. Accordingly, curcumin protects against MPP + - and LPS-induced cytotoxicities in the mouse mesencephalic astrocyte via inhibiting the CYP2E1 expression and activity.

    Abstract: Background. Ferroptosis has gained significant attention from oncologists as a vital outcome of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to develop a prognostic signature that was based on the ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) for osteosarcoma patients and explore their specific role in osteosarcoma. Methods. The training cohort dataset was extracted from the Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) database. Different techniques like the univariate Cox regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, multivariate Cox regression analyses, and the Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival analyses were utilized to develop a prognostic signature. Then, the intrinsic relationship between the developed gene signature and the infiltration levels of the immune cells was further investigated. An external validation dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was employed to assess the predictive ability of the developed gene signature. Subsequently, the specific function of potential FRG in affecting the oxidative stress reaction and ferroptosis of osteosarcoma cells was identified. Results. A prognostic signature based on 5 FRGs (CBS, MUC1, ATG7, SOCS1, and PEBP1) was developed, and the patients were classified into the low- and high-risk groups (categories). High-risk patients displayed poor overall survival outcomes. The risk level was seen to be an independent risk factor for determining the prognosis of osteosarcoma patients ( p 〈 0.001 , hazard ratio: 7.457, 95% CI: 3.302-16.837). Additionally, the risk level was associated with immune function, which might affect the survival status of osteosarcoma patients. Moreover, the findings of the study indicated that the expression of ATG7 was related to the regulation of oxidative stress in osteosarcoma. Silencing the ATG7 gene promoted the proliferation and migration in osteosarcoma cells, suppressing the oxidative stress and ferroptosis process. Conclusions. A novel FRG signature was developed in this study to predict the prognosis of osteosarcoma patients. The results indicated that ATG7 might regulate the process of oxidative stress and ferroptosis in osteosarcoma cells and could be used as a potential target to develop therapeutic strategies for treating osteosarcoma.

    Abstract: BACKGROUND: Many previous studies have evaluated the histopathological features of tumours as risk factors for postoperative recurrence in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there have been few large studies investigating the relationship between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in non-cancerous regions of the liver and postoperative recurrence in the remnant liver, especially in HBV-related HCC. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the significance of COX-2 expression levels in noncancerous liver regions as a prognostic indicator of HCC in patients with HBV-related cirrhosis. METHODS: A total of 124 patients who underwent curative resection for HCC were reviewed retrospectively. Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate the expression of COX-2 in noncancerous liver tissue. Clinicopathological variables were compared between patients with high COX-2 expression (n=58 [COX-2-positive group]) and patients with low COX-2 expression (n=66; [COX-2-negative group] ). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors that affected disease recurrence. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between COX-2 expression and alanine aminotransferase levels and vascular invasion. The recurrence-free survival rates in the COX-2-positive group were significantly lower than the rates in the COX-2-negative group. On multivariate analysis, the overexpression of COX-2 in noncancerous liver regions was found to be an unfavourable prognostic indicator for the recurrence of HCC. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the current study suggest that over-expression of COX-2 in noncancerous liver regions is an independent and significant indicator predictive of early recurrence of HCC in patients with HBV-related cirrhosis.

    Abstract: Clay-brine process employing activated clay, NaCl, HCl, and HF as raw materials is the primarily advanced technology to synthesize cryolite in the present industrial grade. However, plenty of byproducts of fluorine-containing waste HCl at the concentration of about 10%~12% could not be utilized comprehensively and are even hazardous to the environment. This work proposed a new two-step technology to prepare inorganic polymer flocculants polyaluminium chloride (PAC) from synthetic cryolite mother liquor. Many specific factors such as the variety of aluminide source, reaction temperature and time, reagent ratio, and manner of alkaline addition were taken into consideration and their influences on the performances of produced PAC were discussed. It was found that synthetic cryolite mother liquor could react with bauxite and calcium aluminate directly to prepare cheap PAC, with plenty amount of water insoluble CaF 2 and CaSiF 6 produced as well. However, once HCl was introduced into synthetic cryolite mother liquor as well as by utilizing bauxite as aluminide source and sodium aluminate as adjusting basicity agent, the resultant PAC would dissolve out higher amount of aluminum while producing little amount of water insoluble materials. The coagulation behavior of the specially produced PAC could even match the industrial grade PAC conforming to national standard.

    Abstract: Objective. To better understand the status of medical treatment for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer and the differences between the Chinese and the international clinical practice. Methods. This was a retrospective, nationwide, multicenter, epidemiological study of advanced breast cancer patients from China. Between January 01, 2012, and December 31, 2014, a total of 3649 patients, covering 7 geographic regions and 21 institutions, participated in this series of studies. HER2-positive breast cancer was selected among the group and adopted into this study. In comparison, we summarized the demographics and clinical characteristics of HER2-positive breast cancer from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Results. A total of 918 patients diagnosed as HER2-positive breast cancer patients were included. The median age at diagnosis was 46 years (ranging, 23 to 78) with a single-peak incidence. The proportions of stages II–IV at diagnosis and distance metastasis in viscera were more than half of the participants. In comparison, the prevalence of estrogen or progesterone receptor-positive expression and luminalB subtype was relatively lower than that of the United States. The receipt of chemotherapy was fairly higher, while the usage of targeted therapy was seriously insufficient. Tumor size was in significantly positive associations with the duration of targeted therapy (Kendall’s correlation coefficient = 0.3, P 〈 0.0001 ), while no prohibitive variables among clinical characteristics were detected. Conclusion. Our study suggested that HER2-positive breast cancer patients were characterized as a younger trend, a lower prevalence of hormonal receptor (HR)-positive expression, and less accessible to anti-HER2 targeted therapy with insufficient duration over the past few years in China. Concerted efforts should be exerted for promising survival benefits in the future. The trial registration number is https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03047889.

    Abstract: The survey area is located in the planning area of Longquan national urban park, with frequent human activities, numerous water conservancy, transportation projects, and frequent geological disasters such as landslides. The Red Mudstone has low strength and easy to soften in the case of water, and it is very prone to landslide in rainy season. At present, there are many studies on Red Mudstone Landslides, but most of them are analyzed by geological means, and the monitoring process is also dominated by surface deformation and settlement; there is less analysis with hydrogeological that is caused by rainfall and human activities. For Red Mudstone Landslides, to effectively reveal and analyze the process of the Slip Mechanism, we need to carry out the characteristics of hydrogeological structure and underground physical structure, and compare with surface monitoring and point geological structure. In this study, a one-year field survey and hydrogeophysical survey were carried out. Combined with the characteristics of environmental geology, the geophysical forward modeling problem based on finite element method was used to verify the influence of rainfall on the electrical characteristics of underground media. The smoothness constrained least square method and three-dimensional unstructured grid method are used to interpret the ERT data, analyze the abnormal patterns of electrical structure of landslide in different seasons, and correspond well with the GPR data. According to the characteristics of surface vegetation and weathering, as well as the displacement and settlement monitoring after landslide, the spatial characteristics of red bed landslide are revealed, and the relationship between landslide, rainfall, and human activities is clarified.
