Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality worldwide, which is characterized by chronic bronchitis, destruction of small airways, and enlargement/disorganization of alveoli. It is generally accepted that the neutrophilic airway inflammation observed in the lungs of COPD patients is intrinsically linked to the tissue destruction and alveolar airspace enlargement, leading to disease progression. Animal models play an important role in studying the underlying mechanisms of COPD as they address questions involving integrated whole body responses. This review aims to summarize the current animal models of COPD, focusing on their advantages and disadvantages on immune responses and neutrophilic inflammation. Also, we propose a potential new animal model of COPD, which may mimic the most characteristics of human COPD pathogenesis, including persistent moderate-to-high levels of neutrophilic inflammation.

Abstract: Background . Total flavonoids of Rhododendron (TFR) is extracted from Rhododendron, a herbal medicine widely used in China. The main components are flavone compounds such as warfarin, rutin, quercetin, and hyperoside. We investigated the role of TRPV4 channel in the TFR induced endothelium-dependent hyperpolarizing factor- (EDHF-) mediated responses against ischemia/reperfusion injury (IR) in cerebral IR (CIR) rats. Methods . The morphological changes of cerebral cortex, the relaxation of cerebral basal artery (CBA), and cell membrane potential recording were studied in CIR rats. The outward potassium current in smooth muscle cell was recorded by whole-cell patch clamp recording. The protein expression of TRPV4, SKca, and IKca was determined. Confocal laser was used to measure the Ca 2+ fluorescence intensity. Results . After treatment with TFR, the number of pyramidal cells in brain tissue increased and the number of empty or lightly stained cells decreased and these effects were eliminated by using HC-067047, Apamin, or TRAM-34. TFR induced and EDHF-mediated dilatation and hyperpolarization in CBA were also attenuated by using these inhibitors. The increased outward current density elicited by TFR in acutely isolated CBA smooth muscle cells was abolished by using TRAM-34 and Apamin. TFR upregulated the protein expression of TRPV4, SKca, and IKca that was also eliminated by these inhibitors. Laser scanning showed that the increased mean fluorescence intensity of Ca 2+ by CIR was decreased by using TFR and that this effect was again eliminated by the above inhibitors. Conclusions . We conclude that in the CBA of the CIR rats the protective effect of TFR on ischemic cerebrovascular injury may be related to the activation of the TRPV4 in both endothelium and smooth muscle by increasing its expression and activity. The activation of TRPV4 channel in the endothelium may be linked to the opening of endothelial IKca/SKca channels that induces EDHF-mediated relaxation and hyperpolarization in the smooth muscle cell. In addition, the activation of TRPV4 in the smooth muscle cell in CBA may be linked with the activation of B K C a channel through a TRPV4-dependent pathway, reduce Ca 2+ concentration in the cell, and relaxes the vessel. These findings may form a new therapeutic target for protection of ischemic brain injury and facilitate the use of Chinese medicine in brain protection.

Abstract: There has been an explosion of interest in acoustic metamaterial in the last ten years. The tunable negative acoustic metamaterial is an important issue for designing metamaterials. The acoustic metamaterial is restricted by the narrow bandgap of sound waves for the local resonance of metamaterial unit cells. By shifting the sizes of the unit cell, the acoustic metamaterial could potentially overcome the limit of the narrow resonance frequency. In this research, we focus on the resonant behavior of split hollow sphere (SHS) in the waveguide. Firstly, we analyze the resonance characteristics of SHS and get an analytical formula for the effect of geometrical parameters on the resonance frequency. Furthermore, the resonance frequency of SHS is verified with finite-element method analysis based on COMSOL Multiphysics simulation. The results are in good agreement with theory model. It is observed that there is a blue shift of the resonance frequency with the gradual increase of the neck radius of SHS, a V-type response curve with the increase of inner radius of SHS, and a red shift with the increase of outer radius of SHS. Using the method of estimate of resonance, we could get a precisely controllable unit structure with negative effective modulus and offer a way to optimize the realization of double negative acoustic metamaterial.

Abstract: The application of polymer grouting in underground pipeline rehabilitation is increasing gradually. The leakage and subsidence of buried pipelines could be repaired by polymer grouting technology. In order to analyse the calculation theory of the pipeline repairing process, the Winkler model and the Vlazov model of the pipe-soil-polymer interaction based on the elastoplastic theory are established, the calculation formulas of the pipe-soil interaction under polymer grouting are derived, and the MATLAB calculation program based on the transfer matrix method is compiled. Then the calculated values are compared with the pipeline experimental values, and the influence of different factors on the internal force and deformation of the polymer-repaired pipeline under different work conditions is discussed. The results show that the values and trends of the pipe deformation and circumferential bending moment calculated by the models are consistent with the experimental results, and the results obtained by the Vlazov model are closer to the experimental values. In addition, the void at the bottom of the pipeline has a large impact on the mechanical properties of the pipeline. However, polymer grouting can repair disengaged pipelines effectively and restore their mechanical properties. The proposed methods and calculation results are valuable for pipeline polymer repairing analysis and pipeline void repairing design.

Abstract: Mobile crowd sensing (MCS) arises as a new sensing paradigm, which leverages citizens for large-scale sensing by various mobile devices to efficiently collect and share local information. Unlike other MCS application challenges that consider user privacy and data trustworthiness, this study focuses on the network trustworthiness problem, namely, Sybil attacks in MCS network. The Sybil attack in computer security is a type of security attack, which illegally forges multiple identities in peer-to-peer networks, namely, Sybil identities. These Sybil identities will falsify multiple identities that negatively influence the effectiveness of sensing data in this MCS network or degrading entire network performance. To cope with this problem, a cloud based trust management scheme (CbTMS) was proposed to detect Sybil attacks in the MCS network. The CbTMS was proffered for performing active and passive checking scheme, in addition to the mobile PCS trustworthiness management, and includes a decision tree algorithm, to verify the covered nodes in the MCS network. Simulation studies show that our CbTMS can efficiently detect the malicious Sybil nodes in the network and cause 6.87 Wh power reduction compared with other malicious Sybil node attack mode.

Abstract: Objective . In recent years, public health experts have concluded that the impact of osteoarthritis is equal in magnitude to that of cardiovascular disease. Osteoarthritis of the knee is prevalent in the elderly population; however, there are currently no effective treatments for this condition. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of “meridian-sinew release,” a newly developed technique which entails using a meridian-sinew scope and a meridian-sinew knife to treat osteoarthritis of the knee. Methods . Patients ( N = 90 ) with knee osteoarthritis were prospectively randomized to meridian-sinew release therapy, acupuncture therapy, or drug therapy groups, respectively. Outcome evaluation included pain, stiffness, physiological function, total symptom score, and overall changes in the condition. Results . After 12 weeks, patients' general assessment (GA) and doctors' general assessment (GA) of the condition were not significantly different among the three groups. However, significant differences in primary endpoint pain, joint stiffness, and total symptom score were found between the meridian-sinew group and the acupuncture group and between the meridian-sinew group and the control group ( P 〈 0.05 ). No adverse events occurred during the trial. Conclusion . Our study suggests that meridian-sinew release therapy can improve knee osteoarthritis, alleviate joint pain, and improve functional movement disorder. It is a safe and effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract: Redevelopment of abandoned coal mine industrial sites (ACMISs) has been one of the critical research topics in recent years. The ecological system of ACMISs, which involves environmental, economic, and social characteristics, is an environment-economy-society (EES) composite system. Many factors with conflicting effects are involved in the sustainable development of this system. The matter-element analysis method presented in this paper can transform counteracting problems among influencing factors into compatible problems. This analytical approach leads to a reduction of the uncertainty of these influencing factors and provides a suitable research method to solve the complexity when selecting the most suitable reuse mode of the ACMIS. In this study, eight state-owned ACMISs in the suburbs of Beijing were investigated, and a suitability evaluation index system based on the EES conceptual framework was built. Targeting four reuse modes, including the residential area, the park, the scientific research and office campus, and the business district, we established a matter-element decision-making model to evaluate the priority of reuse mode selections scientifically. The results of our calculations show that the optimal reuse mode for the Qianjuntai, Muchengjian, and Huapogen ACMISs is the park; for the Da’anshan and Changgouyu ACMISs is the business district; for the Datai ACMIS is the scientific research and office campus; and for the Wangping ACMIS is the residential area. Since the suitability level of reusing the Anjiatan ACMIS in any of the four reuse modes is relatively low, it is recommended to reserve it for governmental strategically reserved open space. These real cases demonstrate that the research method is feasible and can be applied to reuse mode decisions for similar abandoned coal mines.

Abstract: UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) captured images have small pedestrian targets and loss of key information after multiple down sampling, which are difficult to overcome by existing methods. We propose an improved YOLOv4 model for pedestrian detection and counting in UAV images, named YOLO-CC. We used the lightweight YOLOv4 for pedestrian detection, which replaces the backbone with CSPDarknet-34, and two feature layers are fused by FPN (Feature Pyramid Networks). We expanded the perception field using multiscale convolution based on the high-level feature map and generated the population density map by feature dimension reduction. By embedding the density map generation method into the network for end-to-end training, our model can effectively improve the accuracy of detection and counting and make feature extraction more focused on small targets. Our experiments demonstrate that YOLO-CC achieves 21.76 points AP50 higher than that of the original YOLOv4 on the VisDrone2021-counting data set while running faster than the original YOLOv4.
