Abstract: Dietary inclusion of canthaxanthin, a common carotenoid pigment, has been long practiced in aquaculture to give the favorable flesh color in farmed salmonids. However, carotenoids are associated with limited solubility and poor physicochemical stability, and their dose in fish feed is widely regulated. In this study, we included canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes into fish diets and evaluated the effects of supplemented fish feed on fish growth, color, nutrition, and canthaxanthin deposition in fillets of cultured rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The liposomes were fabricated using lecithin as phospholipids with the initial concentrations (IC = mcanthaxanthin/mlipids, % wt/wt) of canthaxanthin at 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0%. Particle size characterization showed that liposome mean sizes were 109.70 ± 6.36, 105.10 ± 8.41, and 109.20 ± 5.66 nm (mean ± SD; n = 3), respectively, corresponding with liposomes synthesized at canthaxanthin IC = 0.1%, IC = 0.5%, and IC = 1%. The polydispersity index (PDI) of all samples remained lower than 0.2. There were no significant differences in the mean size and PDI between blank lecithin liposome and canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes. The encapsulation efficiency of canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes decreased when increasing the concentration of canthaxanthin in lecithin liposomes, with EE% values of IC = 0.1%, IC = 0.5%, and IC = 1% being 85.3 ± 2.1, 72.9 ± 1.8, and 55.3 ± 2.6, respectively. For fish growth, at the end of the experiment, final weight was significantly higher in fish fed with diet supplemented with 1 g/kg canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes (IC = 0.5%) in comparison to other experimental control groups. The difference in color of the salmon muscle was most apparent after two months of feeding. However, after three months, there was no noticeable change in the color score of the fish muscle, indicating saturation of color of the fish muscle. The above results suggest the potential of canthaxanthin- and a-tocopherol-loaded liposomes as the red pigment in fish aquaculture.

Abstract: Heavy rainfall occurs frequently in Northern Vietnam and causes severe floods and landslides. Heavy rainfall not only appears in rainy seasons (May–October) but also regularly occurs in spring (February–April). This study is devoted to identifying the climatic factors that influence the variation of rainfall, particularly heavy rainfall in Northern Vietnam in the dry season. Analysis based on the observed rainfall, PERSIANN satellite rainfall data, and ERA5 reanalysis reveals that spring should not be considered a dry season, but the first period of a rainy season in Northern Vietnam. Spring rainfall is caused by collaborative effects of cold surge, subtropical high, and the deepening of the low pressure over the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau and Bay of Bengal (BOB). Based on the composite analysis of heavy rainfall events in Northern Vietnam in the transitional season, two heavy rainfall patterns are recognized. The first is related to the southward movement of a meso-scale vortex and the cold surge, while the second one is induced by the interaction of cold surge and the deepening of an upper-level trough.

Abstract: So far, diabetes mellitus has become a health threat to society all over the world. Especially, people with diabetes have always coped with complications related to this disease and unexpected side effects of synthetic drugs. Thus, there has been a current trend for researchers to find out new natural ingredients which were safer and still effective in the treatment of diabetes. Gomphogyne bonii Gagnep. extract (G. bonii extract) was an herbal-derived product of the Pharmacy Department, Vietnam University of Traditional Medicine. This study was designed to assess the antidiabetic effect of G. bonii extract on a high-fat diet (HFD) and alloxan-induced diabetes in mice. Mice were first fed a high-fat diet for 8 weeks and then given an intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (ALX) at the dose of 180 mg/kg b.w. After the diabetic mice model was successfully established, mice were administered orally with G. bonii extract at two doses of 4 mL/kg b.w/day and 12 mL/kg b.w/day for 2 weeks. The results revealed that G. bonii extract at both doses ameliorated the effects of ALX on the concentration of glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and microhistological images of livers. Besides, the antidiabetic effect of G. bonii extract at the dose of 12 mL/kg b.w/day was better than that at the dose of 4 mL/kg b.w/day. This suggested that G. bonii extract could be a potential agent for treating diabetes mellitus in clinical practice.

Abstract: Biorobotic fishes have a huge impact on the development of underwater devices due to both fast swimming speed and great maneuverability. In this paper, an enhanced CPG model is investigated for locomotion control of an elongated undulating fin robot inspired by black knife fish. The proposed CPG network includes sixteen coupled Hopf oscillators for gait generation to mimic fishlike swimming. Furthermore, an enhanced particle swarm optimization (PSO), called differential particle swarm optimization (D-PSO), is introduced to find a set of optimal parameters of the modified CPG network. The proposed D-PSO-based CPG network is not only able to increase the thrust force in order to make the faster swimming speed but also avoid the local maxima for the enhanced propulsive performance of the undulating fin robot. Additionally, a comparison of D-PSO with the traditional PSO and genetic algorithm (GA) has been performed in tuning the parametric values of the CPG model to prove the superiority of the introduced method. The D-PSO-based optimization technique has been tested on the actual undulating fin robot with sixteen fin-rays. The obtained results show that the average propulsive force of the untested material is risen 5.92%, as compared to the straight CPG model.

Abstract: Chronic inflammation is considered as one of the challenging diseases, and overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is strongly related to the onset of chronic inflammation. Therefore, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory approaches are particularly becoming suitable treatment and prevention of inflammation. Curcumin (CUR), a main component of turmeric extract, is well known as an effective agent in both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; however, there are still some limitations of its use including poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and oxidation by ROS. Nanotechnology has been used as a drug delivery system, which is a promising approach in overcoming the aforementioned drawbacks of CUR; hence, it improves the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of conventional medications. In this research, silica-containing redox nanoparticles (siRNP) were designed with the size of several tens of nanometers, prepared by self-assembly of an amphiphilic block copolymer consisting of drug absorptive silica moiety and ROS-scavenging nitroxide radical moiety in the hydrophobic segment. CUR was simply encapsulated into siRNP through the dialysis method, creating CUR-loaded siRNP (CUR@siRNP), which significantly improved the water solubility of CUR. The efficient antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effect of CUR@siRNP in vitro were also improved via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay and lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophage cell line activation, respectively. Oral administration of CUR@siRNP showed improvement in pharmacokinetic profile in vivo including AUC and Cmax values as compared to free CUR. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effect of nanoformulation was investigated in the colitis mouse model induced by dextran sodium sulfate.

Abstract: This study proposed a sequential redox process to partially degrade tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) within a reactor to a great extent. After 72 hours in an anoxic environment, 20 ppm of TBBPA could be effectively degraded by sulfurized zerovalent iron nanoparticles (S-nZVI) at concentrations of 2 g L-1 and 4 g L-1. Biphenol A (BPA) together with tri-, di-, and monobromobisphenol A was detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) suggesting that TBBPA was debrominated by S-nZVI in a stepwise manner. Following the S-nZVI treatment, a persulfate-advanced oxidation process (PS-AOP) system with persulfate concentrations varied from 5 to 20 mM was incorporated to degrade the final debrominated byproduct, BPA, for 2 hours. The two-stage anoxic/oxic reactions at the same reactor with initial conditions (0.037 mM TBBPA, 4 g L-1 of S-nZVI, pH 6 in anoxic stage, 20 mM of PS in the latter oxic stage) were investigated. The sulfurized layer played an important role in such a system and hypothetically contributes to increasing electron transfer from Fe0 core as well as hydrophobicity of the NP surface. It was demonstrated that the S-nZVI/PS-AOP system could effectively remediate TBBPA and BPA and consequently provide a promising strategy to remedy brominated organic pollutants in the environment.

Abstract: In this paper, ZnFe2O4 nanomaterial synthesized in different solvents by hydrothermal method was used as catalyst for the benzylation of p-xylene. ZnFe2O4 catalyst was characterized by XRD, EDX, SEM and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. The influence of various parameters in the benzylation of p-xylene such as the Fe content of the prepared materials, the ratio molar of p-xylene/benzyl chloride, the catalyst dosage, and the temperature was investigated. The relationship between adsorption kinetics and reaction kinetics of p-xylene benzylation over ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles was discussed. The results indicated that ZnFe2O4 catalyst synthesized in ethylene glycol (ZFO-EG) showed high conversation for the benzylation of p-xylene. The reusability of the ZFO-EG catalyst was also investigated.
