    Abstract: Predicting left atrial appendage thrombus (LAAT) in chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation remains challenging despite the fact that several predictive models have been proposed to date. In this study, we sought to develop new and simpler models for LAAT prediction in chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. The study enrolled 144 patients with chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation who underwent transesophageal echocardiography for LAAT detection. We examined the association of LAAT incidence with the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score and echocardiographic parameters pertaining to the left atrium (LA), including diameter, volume index, strain, and strain rate measured on speckle tracking echocardiography. LAAT was found in 24.3% of patients (39/144). The following parameters had good diagnostic performance for LAAT: LA volume index 〉 57 mL (area under the curve (AUC), 0.72; sensitivity, 77.1%; specificity, 64.2%), LA positive strain ≤6.7% in the four-chamber view (AUC, 0.84; sensitivity, 77.1%; specificity, 77.1%), and LA negative strain rate 〉 −0.73 s −1 in the four-chamber view (AUC, 0.83; sensitivity, 85.7%; specificity, 70.6%). The CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score alone had a low predictive value for LAAT in this population ( χ 2  = 3.53), whereas the combination of CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score with LA volume index had significant association and better predictive value ( χ 2  = 12.03), and the combination of CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score with LA volume index and LA positive strain or negative strain rate in the four-chamber view had the best predictive ability for LAAT ( χ 2 : 33.47 and 33.48, respectively). We propose two novel and simple models for noninvasive LAAT prediction in patients with chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. These models combine the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score with LA volume index and LA longitudinal strain parameters measured on speckle tracking echocardiography in the four-chamber view. We hope these simple models can help with decision-making in managing the antithrombotic treatment of such patients, whose risk of stroke cannot be determined solely based on the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score.

    Abstract: Nano-Ce-doped Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG:Ce) powders were synthesized by using a sol-gel low temperature combustion method, followed by thermal annealing. The annealing temperature for enriching nanoparticles was optimized and found to be 1000°C. The process for enriching uniform nanoparticles of YAG:Ce powder was carried out by using the nanosteam technique (NST). The nanoparticles obtained from this NST treatment had a size in the range of 9–20 nm. Measurements of the photoluminescence spectra of the dispersed YAG:Ce nanoparticles solutions showed a blue shift in the photoemission with a value of ca. 10 nm in the green region. WLEDs made from the blue LED chip coated with the nano-YAG:Ce + MEH-PPV composite epoxy exhibit white light with a broad band luminescent spectrum and a high color rending index (CRI). The photoluminescence spectra of the YAG:Ce nanoparticles showed a potential application of the prepared nanostructured YAG:Ce phosphor not only in energy-efficient solid-state lighting, but also in optoelectronic devices, including organic composite solar cells. In addition, it is suggested that NST can be applied for the enrichment of uniform inorganic nanoparticles.

    Abstract: Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been shown as a potential photocatalyst under ultraviolet (UV) light but its catalytic activity has a limitation under visible (Vis) light due to the wide bandgap energy and the rapid recombination of electrons and holes. Thus, hierarchical structure Au/ZnO composites were fabricated by the hydrothermal method and chemical reduction method for enhanced photocatalytic performance under visible light. As-prepared composites were characterized by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DR/UV-Vis), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The Au/ZnO-5 composite showed the highest adsorption among as-prepared samples in the range of 250-550 nm, having bandgap energy of 0.13 eV. Au nanoparticles of about 3-5 nm were well dispersed on hierarchical flower ZnO with approximately 10-15 μm. The EPR signal at g = 1.965 on both ZnO and Au/ZnO samples was attributed to oxygen vacancy Vo•, but the presence of Au led to a decrease in signal strength of Au/ZnO composite, showing the degradation efficiency (DE) and reaction rate of 99.2% and 0.109 min-1, respectively; these were larger than those of other samples. The effects of reaction parameters and oxidizing agents on photocatalytic performance were investigated and showed that the presence of H2O2 and O2 could improve the reaction of composite. In addition, the kinetic and photocatalytic mechanism of tartrazine (TA) on catalysts were studied by the first-order kinetic model and characterized analyses.

    Abstract: Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been known as an excellent photocatalyst for the degradation of a variety of organic pollutants under UV irradiation. This work describes a synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles via a facile precipitation method, and Ag was doped into Ag/ZnO nanocomposite to improve the photocatalytic degradation of BPA under visible light irradiation. The obtained ZnO nanoparticles were 20 nm in size and had a relatively high surface area and pore volume, 26.2 m2/g and 0.48 cm3/g, respectively. The deposition of Ag led to a decrease in the surface area, pore volume, and band gap energy ( E g ) of ZnO nanoparticles. However, the photocatalytic activity of Ag/ZnO composite in the case increased. The performance of ZnO was compared with Ag/ZnO composites at the different molar ratios, and the kinetic reaction of BPA in these catalysts was investigated by the first-order kinetic model. The sample of Ag/ZnO-10 composite had the highest catalytic activity and showed the degradation efficiency, reaction rate, and degradation capacity of 100% in 120 min, 0.014 min-1, and 40 mg/g, respectively. In comparison, the effects of Ag/ZnO molar ratio, catalyst dosage, solution pH, and concentration of BPA on photocatalytic degradation were investigated. Additionally, the photocatalytic performance of Ag/ZnO-10 composite was evaluated by the degradation of other persistent organic compounds such as phenol, tartrazine, and methylene blue and compared to other catalysts in literature.

    Abstract: The low carbon steel has good ductility that is favorable for forming process, but its low strength leads to limiting their application for forced structures. This paper studied improving strength of low-carbon steel via rolling deformation and dual-phase treatment. The results showed that the dual-phase treated steel had a combination of high strength and good ductility; its tensile ultimate strength reached 740 MPa with elongation at fracture of over 15%, while that of the cold-rolled steel only reached 700 MPa with elongation at fracture of under 3%. Based on the obtained results, relationships between mechanical properties and dual-phase processing parameters were established to help users choose suitable-processing parameters according to requirements of products.

    Abstract: A method for producing ferulic acid by ultrasound-assisted, homogeneous, base-catalyzed hydrolysis of γ -oryzanol was developed. Experiments were conducted using various reaction temperatures and ratios of γ -oryzanol to base catalyst in both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. The reaction performed without ultrasound under the homogeneous conditions of potassium hydroxide/ γ -oryzanol ratio (wt/wt) 20 : 1 and 75°C gave a ferulic acid yield of 83.3% in 3 h. Acceleration of the homogeneous reaction using ultrasound irradiation at 20 (horn type) and 200 kHz (planar type) was explored by evaluating the kinetic parameters. At 30°C, the ratios of ultrasonic irradiation at low (20 kHz, 50 W) and high (200 kHz, 50 W) frequencies versus those of the heating method increased by 2.0- and 1.4-fold in comparison with those at 60°C, respectively. The contribution of ultrasonic irradiation (50 W) to the hydrolysis reaction decreased with increase of temperature. However, irradiation at 20 kHz and a power of 180 W gave a 94% ferulic acid yield at 60°C in 3 h. These results indicate that the use of low frequency (horn type and high-power irradiation) enabled yields higher than 90% to be obtained.

    Abstract: The ribbons Nd 2 Fe 14 B/Fe-Co were prepared with the nominal composition Nd 16 Fe 76 B 8 /40% wt. Fe 65 Co 35 by the conventional and the developed magnetic field-assisted melt-spinning (MFMS) techniques. Both ribbons are nanocomposites with the smooth single-phase-like magnetization loops. The 0.32 T magnetic field perpendicular to the wheel surface and assisting the melt-spinning process reduces the grain size inside the ribbon, increases the texture of the ribbon, improves the exchange coupling, and, in sequence, increases the energy product ( BH ) max of the isotropic powdered samples of MFMS ribbon in ~9% by comparison with that of the ribbon melt-spun conventionally. The grain size reduction effect caused by the assisted magnetic field has also been described quantitatively. The MFMS technique seems to be promising for producing high-performance nanocomposite ribbons.

    Abstract: CuSO4/hydrazine hydrate was used as a catalyst system for copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) of AZT and 5′-azido adenosine with terminal alkynes to give 30 novel 1,2,3-triazole derivatives. Screening for their anticancer, anti-inflammatory, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and 3C-like protease (3CLpro) inhibitory activities showed that several triazoles of AZT containing murayafoline A and indirubin-3′-oxime inhibited the growth of HepG2 and LU-1 with the IC50 values ranging from 11.01 to 19.87 μg/mL. Besides that, some triazole derivatives of adenosine exhibited anti-inflammatory activity against RAW264.7 cells with the IC50 values within an interval of 12.00–59.48.00 μg/mL. Especially, two triazoles of adenosine with indirubin-3′-oxime at O- and N1 positions expressed the ACE2 and 3CLpro inhibitory activities in which the triazole of adenosine with indirubin-3′-oxime at N1 inhibited both ACE2 and 3CLpro inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 135.62 and 142.95 μg/mL, respectively.

    Abstract: Microalgae have been reported to produce endogenous phytohormones including auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, brassinosteroids, and abscisic acid. Methanol residual released from microalgal lipid extraction usually contains a variety of bioactive compounds including the phytohormones; however, they are poorly characterized and used for other applications. This study aimed at investigating auxin, gibberellin, and cytokinin production of C. sorokiniana TH01 under phototrophic and mixtrophic cultivations. Moreover, endogenous auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins in methanol residual obtained from the algal lipid extraction were characterized using HPLC-ESI-MS/MS toward application for crop and biorefinery research. Data showed that endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), 3-indolepropionic acid (IPA), gibberellin A4 (GA4), and gibberellin A7 (GA7) were detected in C. sorokiniana TH01 biomass. Under the phototrophic mode, total auxin and GA levels were reduced to 0.98 and 9.65  μ g/g DW under salt stress (20 g NaCl/L) from 3.59 to 24.71  μ g/g DW, respectively, measured for the control. Similarly, total auxins and GAs were also decreased to 0.56 and 2.86  μ g/g DW, respectively, under mixtrophic growth with 6 g glucose/L. Total auxins and GAs determined in the water algal extract were 1062.7 and 2000.1  μ g/L, respectively. Treatment with higher 40% (v/v) of the algal extract triggered earlier seed germination of rice and tomato plants in 2 and 1 days, respectively. Our new findings in capability of C. sorokiniana TH01 in endogenous phytohormone production contain fundamental merits for further optimization of the algal production (i.e., cultivation modes, conditions, lipids, biomass productivity, and hormone levels) to be used for biorefinery.
