Abstract: The mesocotyl facilities the emergence of deep-sown rice. However, the effects of mesocotyl elongation on mechanically transplanted rice seedlings remain unclear. In this study, the indica three-line hybrid rice Chuanyou 6709 (CY6709) and the indica conventional rice Guichao II (GCII) were selected as experimental materials. The seedlings were grouped based on mesocotyl lengths of 1.0 and 2.0 cm (M1 and M2, respectively), and seedlings without mesocotyl elongation were used as a control (M0). Seedling morphology, root morphology and physiology, and dynamic changes in soluble sugar and protein, malondialdehyde (MDA), and antioxidant enzyme activity in the mesocotyl were evaluated. The results showed that the elongation of mesocotyl is not conducive to improving the quality of mechanically transplanted seedlings, resulting in weak seedlings and poor root coiling force. The mesocotyl lengths of the seedlings showed a single peak with increasing seedling age, which gradually disappeared. The longer the mesocotyls, the slower their senescence. The MDA content of M2 was significantly lower than that of M1, and the activities of soluble sugar, soluble protein, and antioxidant enzymes of M2 were higher than those of M1, implying that seedlings with longer mesocotyls yielded lower-quality seedlings, reducing their suitability for mechanized transplantation. Compared with those of M0, the root-shoot ratio, stem base width, leaf age, leaf area, white root number, root coiling force, root length, root surface area, and root volume of M1 and M2 were reduced. Therefore, in the raising of rice seedlings, excessive elongation of the rice mesocotyl is not conducive to optimum root growth and development of aboveground structures for seedlings that are suitable for mechanized transplantation. Controlling the mesocotyl elongation can facilitate the cultivation of high-quality mechanically transplanted seedlings.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to introduce a novel technique of robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP) for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) with long proximal ureteral stricture in children. Materials and methods Clinical information on patients who underwent a modified RALP between July 2018 and May 2019 in our center was collected retrospectively. Our surgical modifications mainly include “double-flap” tailoring of the renal pelvis and anastomosis of spatulate ureter with the double-flap. Demographic, perioperative, postoperative, and follow-up information was recorded in detail. Results A total of 13 patients were included in the study. All the patients underwent a modified RALP without conversion to open surgery. They were followed up with a median time of 36 months. The anteroposterior diameter of the renal pelvis was 1.19 ± 0.21 at 6 months after the surgery, which was significantly lower than that on admission (3.93 ± 0.79). The split renal function of the children was also significantly improved from 0.37 ± 0.05) to 0.46 ± 0.02 at 6 months after surgery ( p & lt; 0.05). The diuretic renography revealed that all the patients have a T1/2 time less than 20 min postoperatively. The children were in good condition during the follow-up period. Conclusions Modified RALP is an effective surgical treatment for children with UPJO with long proximal ureteral stricture. The success rate of this modification has been preliminarily confirmed.

Abstract: Circadian factors likely influence the occurrence, development, therapy, and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). To determine the association between the heart rate (HR) diurnal parameters and CVD risks, we designed an analytical strategy to detect diurnal rhythms of HR using longitudinal data collected by clinically used Holter monitors and wearable devices. By combining in-house developed algorithms with existing analytical tools, we obtained trough phase and nocturnal variation in HR for different purposes. The analytical strategy is robust and also sensitive enough to identify variations in HR rhythms influenced by multiple effectors such as jet lag, geological location and altitude, and age from total 211 volunteers. A total of 10,094 sets of 24-h Holter ECG data were analyzed by stepwise partial correlation to determine the critical points of HR trough phase and nocturnal variation. The following HR diurnal patterns correlate with high CVD risk: arrhythmic pattern, anti-phase pattern, rhythmic patterns with trough phase less than 0 (extremely advanced diurnal pattern) or more than 5 (extremely delayed diurnal pattern), and nocturnal variation less than 2.75 (extremely low) or more than 26 (extremely high). In addition, HR trough phases from wearable devices were nearly identical to those from 24-h Holter monitoring from 12 volunteers by linear correlation and Bland-Altman analysis. Our analytical system provides useful information to identify functional diurnal patterns and parameters by monitoring personalized, HR-based diurnal changes. These findings have important implications for understanding how a regular heart diurnal pattern benefits cardiac function and raising the possibility of non-pharmacological intervention against circadian related CVDs. With the rapid expansion of wearable devices, public cardiovascular health can be promoted if the analytical strategy is widely applied.

Abstract: Objectives: To explore and understand the SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence of convalescents, the association between antibody levels and demographic factors, and the seroepidemiology of convalescents of COVID-19 till March 2021. Methods: We recruited 517 voluntary COVID-19 convalescents in Sichuan Province and collected 1,707 serum samples till March 2021. Then we reported the seroprevalence and analyzed the associated factors. Results: Recent travel history was associated with IgM levels. Convalescents who had recent travel history were less likely to be IgM antibody negative [OR = 0.232, 95% CI: (0.128, 0.420)]. Asymptomatic cases had, approximately, twice the odds of being IgM antibody negative compared with symptomatic cases [OR = 2.583, 95% CI: (1.554, 4.293)] . Participants without symptoms were less likely to be IgG seronegative than those with symptoms [OR = 0.511, 95% CI: (0.293, 0.891)]. Convalescents aged 40–59 were less likely to be IgG seronegative than those aged below 20 [OR = 0.364, 95% CI: (0.138, 0.959)] . The duration of positive IgM antibodies persisted 365 days while the IgG persisted more than 399 days. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that recent travel history might be associated with the antibody levels of IgM, while age could be associated with the antibody levels of IgG. Infection type could be associated with both antibody levels of IgM and IgG that declined quicker in asymptomatic cases.

Abstract: Objective: To present our primary experience of robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP) for severe ureteropelvis junction obstruction (UPJO) infants under 3 months. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of 9 infants under 3 months who underwent RALP for severe UPJO between April 2017 and March 2019 in our center. The severe UPJO was defined as infants with severe hydronephrosis (Society of Fetal Urology grades III or IV, anteroposterior diameter & gt;3 cm or split renal function & lt;40% or T 1/2 & gt;20 min) involving bilateral, solitary kidney, or contralateral renal hypoplasia UPJO at the same time. All clinical, perioperative, and postoperative information was collected. Results: There were four bilateral UPJO cases, two solitary kidney UPJO cases and three unilateral UPJO with contralateral renal hypoplasia cases included. One single surgeon performed RALP on all of the infants. The mean age of the infants was 1.62 ± 0.54 months. The mean operative time was 109.55 ± 10.47 min. The mean estimated blood loss was 19.29 ± 3.19 ml, and the mean length of hospital stay was 5.57 ± 0.73 days. According to the ultrasonography results, all patients had a significant recovery of renal function at 12 months after the operation. Conclusions: To maximize the protection of renal function, early RALP is a safe and feasible option for the treatment of severe UPJO in infants under 3 months.

Abstract: To propose and validate a new classification of surgical methods for patients with subaxial cervical hemivertebrae. Method This article reviewed cases diagnosed with subaxial cervical hemivertebrae in our hospital from January 2008 to December 2019. The results of preoperative (initial visit), postoperative and/or final follow-up were assessed using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, Neck Disability Index (NDI) score, spinal balance parameters, and Scoliosis Research Society-22 Questionnaire (SRS-22). We also performed a reliability study to assess this classification. Result The classification includes three types. Each type can be divided into two subtypes, and a preliminary algorithm is proposed. Type I: There is an obvious appearance deformity in the neck, there are hemivertebrae in the cervical spine, and only a single hemivertebra of the subaxial cervical hemivertebra needs to be resected. Type II: There is an obvious appearance deformity in the neck, there are hemivertebrae in the cervical spine, and multiple subaxial cervical hemivertebrae need to be removed. Type III: No apparent deformity in the neck, at least one subaxial cervical hemivertebra existed or Klipper-Feil syndrome. Each type is divided into two subtypes, A and B, according to whether the upper and lower adjacent vertebral bodies of the rescected hemivertebra(e) are fused. We propose corresponding treatment methods for different types. We included a total of 121 patients and reviewed the prognosis for each type of patient. All patients achieved satisfactory results. The reliability study showed that the mean interobserver agreement was 91.8% (89.3%–93.4%), and the κ value was 0.845 (0.800–0.875). The intraobserver agreement ranged from 93.4% to 97.5%, with a mean κ value of 0.929 (0.881 to 0.954). Conclusion In our study, we proposed and validated a new classification of subaxial cervical hemivertebrae and proposed corresponding treatment plans for different classifications.

Abstract: A talented endophytic bacteria strain YINM00001, which showed strong antimicrobial activity and multiple antibiotic resistances, was isolated from a Chinese medicinal herb Peperomia dindygulensis Miq. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that strain was closely related to Streptomyces anulatus NRRL B-2000T (99.93%). The complete genome of strain YINM00001 was sequenced. The RAxML phylogenomic tree also revealed that strain YINM00001 was steadily clustered on a branch with strain Streptomyces anulatus NRRL B-2000T under the 100 bootstrap values. The complete genome of strain YINM00001 consists of an 8,372,992 bp linear chromosome (71.72 mol% GC content) and a 317,781 bp circular plasmid (69.14 mol% GC content). Genome mining and OSMAC approach were carried out to investigate the biosynthetic potential of producing secondary metabolites. Fifty-two putative biosynthetic gene clusters of secondary metabolites were found, including the putative cycloheximide, dinactin, warkmycin, and anthracimycin biosynthetic gene clusters which consist with the strong antifungal and antibacterial activities exhibited by strain YINM00001. Two new compounds, peperodione ( 1 ) and peperophthalene ( 2 ), and 17 known compounds were isolated from different fermentation broth. Large amounts and high diversity of antimicrobial and/or anticancer compounds cycloheximide, dinactin, anthracimycin, and their analogs had been found as predicted before, which highlights strain YINM00001 as an ideal candidate for further biosynthetic studies and production improvement of these valuable compounds. Meanwhile, several gene clusters that were highly conserved in several sequenced actinomycetes but significantly different from known gene clusters might be silent under proceeding fermentation conditions. Further studies, such as heterologous expression and genetic modification, are needed to explore more novel compounds from this talented endophytic Streptomyces strain.

Abstract: China discontinued the zero-COVID-19 policy on December 7, 2022, and then COVID-19 surged mid-December 2022 through mid-January 2023. However, the actual incidence was unknown. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children shortly after ending the zero-COVID-19 policy. Methods This multicenter cross-sectional study included 1,065 children aged 8 months to 12 years from seven hospitals at six regions across Jiangsu province, based on the convenience sampling, from February 10 to March 10, 2023. Group I comprised 324 children aged 8 months–2 years without COVID-19 vaccination, group II consisted of 338 preschool children aged 3–5 years with varied vaccination history, and group III contained 403 primary school children aged 6–12 years with mostly vaccinated. The COVID-19 vaccines were composed of inactivated SARS-CoV-2. In addition, 96 children’s sera collected in 2014 were included as negative controls. IgG and IgM antibodies against nucleocapsid (N) and subunit 1 of spike (S1) of SARS-CoV-2 (anti-N/S1) were measured with commercial kits (YHLO Biotech, Shenzhen, China). Results None of the 96 children (5.1 ± 3.5 years; 58.3% boys) in 2014 was positive for anti-N/S1 IgG or IgM. Of the 1,065 children (5.0 ± 3.5 years; 56.0% boys), 988 (92.8%) were anti-N/S1 IgG positive but none was anti-N/S1 IgM positive. The positive rate of anti-N/S1 IgG in Group I, II, and III was 90.4, 88.5, and 98.3%, respectively, with significantly higher in group III than in groups I and II ( p & lt; 0.0001). The median antibody titers in group III (381.61 AU/ml) were much higher than that in group I (38.34 AU/ml) and II (51.88 AU/ml; p & lt; 0.0001). Conclusion More than 90% children experienced SARS-CoV-2 infection shortly after ending zero-COVID-19 policy in China, much higher than estimated infections by other studies. The widespread SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated children should be influential on the policy of COVID-19 vaccination in children in the future.
