    Abstract: To explore the prognostic value of radiological features and serum indicators in patients treated with postoperative adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization (PA-TACE) and develop a prognostic model to predict the overall survival (OS) of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with PA-TACE. Method We enrolled 112 patients (75 in the training cohort and 37 in the validation cohort) with HCC treated with PA-TACE after surgical resection at the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University between January 2012 and June 2015. The independent OS predictors were determined using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Decision curve analyses and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to verify the prognostic performance of the different models; the best model was selected to establish a multi-dimensional nomogram for predicting the OS of HCC patients treated with PA-TACE. Result Multivariate regression analyses indicated that rim-like arterial phase enhancement (IRE), peritumor capsule (PTC), and alanine aminotransferase to hemoglobin ratio (AHR) were independent predictors of OS after PA-TACE. The combination of AHR had the best clinical net benefit and we constructed a prognostic nomogram based on IRE, PTC, and AHR. The calibration curve showed good fit between the predicted nomogram’s curve and the observed curve. Conclusion Our preliminary study confirmed the prognostic value of AHR, PTC, and IRE and established a nomogram that can predict the OS after PA-TACE treatment in patients with HCC.

    Abstract: Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which belong to the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) family, are critical for the control of developmental processes such as dorsal-ventral axis formation, somite and tooth formation, skeletal development, and limb formation. Despite Oplegnathus having typical healing beak-like teeth and tooth development showing a trend from discrete to healing, the potential role of BMPs in the development of the beak-like teeth is incompletely understood. In the present study, 19 and 16 BMP genes were found in O. fasciatus and O. punctatus , respectively, and divided into the BMP2/4/16, BMP5/6/7/8, BMP9/10, BMP12/13/14, BMP3/15 and BMP11 subfamilies. Similar TGFb and TGF_β gene domains and conserved protein motifs were found in the same subfamily; furthermore, two common tandem repeat genes (BMP9 and BMP3a-1) were identified in both Oplegnathus fasciatus and Oplegnathus punctatus . Selection pressure analysis revealed 13 amino acid sites in the transmembrane region of BMP3, BMP7, and BMP9 proteins of O. fasciatus and O. punctatus , which may be related to the diversity and functional differentiation of genes within the BMP family. The qPCR-based developmental/temporal expression patterns of BMPs showed a trend of high expression at 30 days past hatching (dph), which exactly corresponds to the ossification period of the bones and beak-like teeth in Oplegnathus . Tissue-specific expression was found for the BMP4 gene, which was upregulated in the epithelial and mesenchymal tissues of the beak-like teeth, suggesting that it also plays a regulatory role in the development of the beak-like teeth in O. punctatus . Our investigation not only provides a scientific basis for comprehensively understanding the BMP gene family but also helps screen the key genes responsible for beak-like tooth healing in O. punctatus and sheds light on the developmental regulatory mechanism.

    Abstract: With rapid economic development and the increasing demand for drinking water, a large amount of groundwater is exploited, resulting in a high F − content in groundwater, which is harmful to the environment and human body. In this study, 5,464 data points of fluoride in shallow groundwater were collected, and the F − content distribution, occurrence form and environmental impact of shallow groundwater were discussed. The results showed that 1) the F − content in shallow groundwater in China ranged from 0 to 60 mg/L, with a mean content of 0.90 mg/L; the lowest average F − content in shallow groundwater in Southwest China was 0.36 mg/L; South China (1.20 mg/L), Northeast China (1.25 mg/L) and Northwest China (1.25 mg/L) were considered high-fluoride areas, and North China (0.93 mg/L), East China (0.67 mg/L) and Central China (0.80 mg/L) were considered low-fluoride areas. The mean F − content in groundwater differed between provinces and cities. 2) The F − in shallow groundwater mainly occurred in ionic, complex ionic and organic fluoride molecular states. 3) The influence of a high F − content in shallow groundwater on the environment was mainly manifested in the increase in water F − concentration and soil F − and vegetable F − content. The influence of a high F − content on the human body was mainly manifested in an increase in urinary F − content in children, a high prevalence of dental fluorosis in children, an increase in skeletal fluorosis rate in adults with age, and an influence on cognitive function of older adults. These results provide a basis for F − pollution control and high-fluoride water treatment.

    Abstract: Tuberculosis (TB), mainly caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( Mtb ), remains a serious public health problem. Increasing evidence supports that selective evolution is an important force affecting genomic determinants of Mtb phenotypes. It is necessary to further understand the Mtb selective evolution and identify the positively selected genes that probably drive the phenotype of Mtb . Methods This study mainly focused on the positive selection of 807 Mtb strains from Southern Xinjiang of China using whole genome sequencing (WGS). PAML software was used for identifying the genes and sites under positive selection in 807 Mtb strains. Results Lineage 2 (62.70%) strains were the dominant strains in this area, followed by lineage 3 (19.45%) and lineage 4 (17.84%) strains. There were 239 codons in 47 genes under positive selection, and the genes were majorly associated with the functions of transcription, defense mechanisms, and cell wall/membrane/envelope biogenesis. There were 28 codons (43 mutations) in eight genes ( gyrA , rpoB , rpoC , katG , pncA , embB , gid , and cut1 ) under positive selection in multi-drug resistance (MDR) strains but not in drug-susceptible (DS) strains, in which 27 mutations were drug-resistant loci, 9 mutations were non-drug-resistant loci but were in drug-resistant genes, 2 mutations were compensatory mutations, and 5 mutations were in unknown drug-resistant gene of cut1 . There was a codon in Rv0336 under positive selection in L3 strains but not in L2 and L4 strains. The epitopes of T and B cells were both hyper-conserved, particularly in the T-cell epitopes. Conclusion This study revealed the ongoing selective evolution of Mtb . We found some special genes and sites under positive selection which may contribute to the advantage of MDR and L3 strains. It is necessary to further study these mutations to understand their impact on phenotypes for providing more useful information to develop new TB interventions.

    Abstract: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most frequent soft sarcoma in children and adolescents. Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is a relatively rare subtype that is characterized by aggressive behavior and an unsatisfactory prognosis. An ARMS can arise anywhere but most commonly occurs at extremity sites with a very small fraction in the retroperitoneum. The utility of 2-Deoxy-2-[fluorine-18]-fluoro-D-glucose ( 18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) remains to be established in ARMS. Case Report A 3-year-old female child was accidentally found with a large left upper abdominal mass for a day. CT examination indicated a huge soft tissue mass in the left retroperitoneum extending superiorly to the level of the left hilus renalis and inferiorly to the left acetabulum in the pelvic cavity, with intrusion into the lumbar foramens. 18 F-FDG PET/CT found a mass in the left retroperitoneum from the level of T12 to the left acetabulum, with the maximum standardized uptake value (SUV max ) of about 7.0, and a CT value of about 39 HU, invading the left L3-5 intervertebral foramina and protruding into the spinal canal, with unclear boundary with the spinal cord. Retroperitoneal tumor resection and the repair operation of vascular exploration were performed. An ARMS was confirmed by postoperative biopsy, immunohistochemical staining, and genetic detection with the rupture of the fork head in rhabdomyosarcoma (FKHR). The patient received chemotherapy and was in a good condition with no recurrence and obvious complications. Conclusion Retroperitoneal ARMS is rare and indicates a poor outcome with the potential to involve vital organs and intrude into the spinal canal. Accurate diagnosis and staging using PET/CT would contribute to better risk stratifications and appropriate treatment individually.

    Abstract: Sebastes schlegelii is a commercially important fish with a special viviparous reproductive system that is cultured in near-shore seawater net cages in East Asia. In the gonadal development of the species, the gonad of males mature before those of females, which mature after mating. Mating in male/female fishes occurs in October of each year. Then, females undergoing oocyte maturation complete fertilization using stored sperm in March of the following year. The pregnancy is completed when larvae are produced in the ovary. It has been reported that embryonic nutrient supply originates entirely from the female viviparous reproductive systems. However, until now, the nutritional patterns and the processes of nutrient provision in S. schlegelii before parturition have not been clear. The goal of this research was to study the embryos, larvae and juveniles of S. schlegelii during pregnancy. Anatomical observations, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the developmental characteristics of early embryos and larvae and the connecting structures between the mother and the fetus. The results showed the following: (1) Placental-like structures were found during the process of embryonic development in S. schlegelii , and these placental-like structures proliferated after fertilization. (2) The embryos of S. schlegelii were encased by a saclike structure composed of blood vessels, connective tissue, and surface epithelial cells. The vessels near the embryo existed in the thecal layer. Vascularized proliferation was detected following embryonic development. (3) Starting in the gastrula stage, connections between the embryo and surrounding cells loosened, and ovarian fluid became abundant. In addition, a large number of small holes and cristae were observed on the surface of the embryo. We speculate that embryos may be able to absorb nutrients from the ovarian fluid. (4) Yolk was present throughout embryo development. (5) Two types of nutritional modes were observed, lecithotrophic and matrotrophic during embryonic development. Three forms of placental analogs may exist in S. schlegelii : (1) external epithelial absorptive surfaces; (2) trophonemata, with modifications of the ovarian epithelia for absorbing the histotroph; and (3) a follicular pseudoplacenta, with close apposition between follicle cells and embryonic absorptive epithelia.

    Abstract: Several oncogenic drivers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are considered actionable with available or promising targeted therapies. Although targetable drivers rarely overlap with each other, there were a minority of patients harboring co-occurring actionable oncogenic targets, whose clinical characteristics and prognosis are not yet clear. Methods A total of 3,077 patients with NSCLC who underwent molecular analysis by NGS were included, and their demographic and clinical data were retrospectively collected. Results Our study found that the frequency of NSCLC patients harboring co-occurring potentially actionable alterations was approximately 1.5% (46/3077); after excluding patients with EGFR -undetermined mutations, the incidence was 1.3% (40/3077); 80% (37/46) harbored both EGFR mutations and other potentially actionable drivers such as MET amplification (21.6%; 8/37) and alterations in ERBB2 including mutations (27%; 10/37) and amplification (21.6%; 8/37); other combinations of potentially actionable drivers including alterations in ERBB2 , KRAS , MET , ALK , and RET were also identified. Additionally, de novo MET / ERBB2 amplification in patients harboring EGFR -mutant NSCLC treated with first-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) was associated with shorter PFS (p & lt; 0.05). The efficacy of TKIs in NSCLC patients harboring other co-occurring potentially actionable drivers varied across different molecular subtypes. Conclusions Approximately 1.5% of NSCLCs harbored co-occurring potentially actionable oncogenic drivers, commonly involving EGFR mutations. Co-occurring actionable targets may impact the efficacy of TKIs; therefore, future clinical trials in these patients should be anticipated to tailor the combination or sequential treatment strategies.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between psychology and modern art design education in colleges, and to provide the basis for improving the quality of art education in colleges. Based on the relevant theory, the characteristics of educational psychology and art psychology and the correlation between them were analyzed from the angle of art education. According to the characteristics of college students' psychological development, the significance of art psychology-related courses was analyzed. Through the form of questionnaire, a total of 200 students (400 students in total) were randomly selected from Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts (professional art college) and Xi'an University of Science and Technology (comprehensive university), respectively. A total of 400 questionnaires were issued, and 382 valid questionnaires were recovered. The results show that almost all students in two colleges think pedagogy and educational psychology are the theoretical basis for art teachers, while less than one-third of students in Xi'an University of Science and Technology think that art psychology is the theoretical basis for art teachers. The difference between the students' aesthetic and life values in the two colleges is significant ( p & lt; 0.01). In the 15 directions of life values, there are significant differences in five directions: spirit—material ( p & lt; 0.05), enrichment—emptiness ( p & lt; 0.05), enthusiasm—apathy ( p & lt; 0.05), hope—despair ( p & lt; 0.01), and dedication—acceptance ( p & lt; 0.01). It shows that the psychological and values of college students are changeable, and the educators should pay attention to the education in the related fields of psychology. This exploration was conducted based on educational psychology, which is of great significance for improving the educational level of art psychology in colleges and enable students to form correct aesthetic standards and life values.
