    Abstract: Stock enhancement based on hatchery-reared fish has become one of the most common forms of management practices in marine fisheries resource restoration. However, unnatural rearing environments may cause hatchery-reared fish to diverge phenotypically from wild conspecifics, with negative consequences for post-release performance in the natural environments. To better evaluate the suitability of releasing hatchery-reared fish, it is necessary to understand the phenotypic effects of captive rearing, through comparisons with wild conspecifics. In this study, we compared body morphology, swimming performance, and biochemical body composition between hatchery-reared and wild marbled rockfish ( Sebastiscus marmoratus ) from the same general gene pool. The results show that the overall body profile differed significantly between the groups, with hatchery-reared individuals having a deeper body (in particular in the head and trunk regions), narrower caudal peduncles, and higher condition factor, as compared to wild conspecifics. Hatchery-reared marbled rockfish also had relatively shorter fins, for a given size. In terms of swimming performance, the hatchery-reared marbled rockfish performed worse than the wild, with slower burst swimming speeds and poorer endurance. Wild rockfish had higher body protein content but lower lipid levels compared to the hatchery-reared individuals. These results suggest that hatchery rearing conditions have a great impact on the phenotypic development, with possibly high effects on their post-release performance of the hatchery-reared marbled rockfish. Modifications for the hatchery environment and operation should be investigated with an aim to minimize the divergence in phenotypic development for production of more wild-like fish for stocking.

    Abstract: Inland surface water plays an important role in global carbon cycling, which responds to transformation between dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Studies have shown that algae in karst lakes and reservoirs can convert DIC to organic matter (OM) and form stable carbon sinks via photosynthesis. However, the pathways of conversion of inorganic carbon to organic carbon during algal growth remain unclear and need further investigation. In this study, spectroscopic techniques were applied to investigate the variations in algal organic matter (AOM) composition in the growth metabolism of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus under simulated karst water condition. The results showed that algal extracellular organic matter (EOM) contained high DIC concentration during the adaptation phase, which formed the carbon source for algal photosynthesis. In addition, DOC in algae increased after entering the stationary phase, while more OM was released into water. As algal growth proceeded, the amino groups in EOM were consumed to produce more aromatic protein-like material, while more lipid material was produced in intracellular organic matter (IOM). The spectral characterization results could intuitively determine AOM dynamics in different growth stages of algae, which can be used for establishing effective approaches for detecting organic carbon variations and responding to regional carbon cycling in karst water.

    Abstract: The force chain method is a powerful tool to analyze the pressure arch of a tunnel, which has important influence on the seismic stability of tunnel structures. The force distribution around the tunnel before and after an earthquake was observed with numerical simulation and shaking table test, and then some parameters related to the pressure arch around the tunnel were analyzed. The discrete element method software PFC was used to numerically simulate the variation of shape and height of pressure arch with tunnel depth before and after an earthquake. The effect of tunnel depth, span, section shape, lining stiffness, seismic spectrum, and seismic amplitude on the shape and height of pressure arch was numerically simulated. The numerical results show that the tunnel depth, span, section shape, and seismic amplitude have great effect on the pressure arch shape, while the lining stiffness and seismic spectrum has little effect on the pressure arch shape. In addition, the shaking table tests were conducted to observe the pressure arch shape before and after an earthquake, and the experimental results were applied to verify the numerical simulation results.

    Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the association between sedentary behavior and anxiety-induced sleep disorder at a global perspective. Methods: A total of 254,924 adolescents (mean age: 14.45 ± 1.42 years; 52.8% girls) who participated in the Global School-Based Student Health Survey were included for analysis. Self-reported questionnaires assessed anxiety-induced sleep disorder and sedentary behavior. Multivariable logistic regression analysis and countrywide meta-analysis were used for investigating the association between sedentary behavior and anxiety-included sleep disorder. Results: The results showed that sedentary time was linearly associated with higher OR of anxiety-related sleep disorder in adolescents across the countries and that 8 h or more per day increased the OR by 2.17 times. Countrywide meta-analysis showed that 8 h or more per day of sedentary behavior yielded an OR = 1.40 (95% CI = 1.34–1.46) of anxiety-induced sleep disorder. Moreover, the association between sedentary behavior and sleep anxiety was significant in adolescents over the age of 11 years regardless of sex. Conclusions: The findings from this study suggest that as sedentary behavior increases, sleep disorders also increase, independently of sex among adolescents. Effective preventive strategies are needed to be taken to decrease sedentary behavior that could be used to improve mental health and sleep quality among adolescents.

    Abstract: Inflammation plays an important role in the occurrence and development of neuropathic pain. Immune-responsive gene 1 (IRG1) decarboxylates cis -aconitate to produce itaconate in the mitochondria. Itaconate serves as an immunomodulator of macrophages and represses inflammation in infectious diseases. Recently, a study showed that an itaconate derivative inhibits neuroinflammation and reduces chronic pain in mice. However, the function and molecular mechanisms of endogenous itaconate in neuropathic pain have not been fullyelucidated. In this study, the content of itaconate in the ipsilateral spinal cord after nerve-injured mice was detected with mass spectrometry. The Irg1 -/- mouse was constructed to determine the role of endogenous itaconate in the chronic constriction nerve injury (CCI) model. The analgesic effect of exogenous itaconate was assessed with intraperitoneal and intrathecal administration in both male and female CCI mice. The spinal application of 4-OI also reduced the evoked responses of wide dynamic range neurons in CCI mice. The potential analgesic mechanism of itaconate was explored through molecular biology experiments and verified in Interleukin (IL)-10 -/- mice. We found the levels of itaconate and IRG1 in the spinal cord significantly increased after CCI. Irg1 deficiency aggravated the mechanical and heat hypersensitivity, while the exogenous administration of the itaconate derivative 4-OI alleviated the neuropathic pain in male and female CCI mice. Mechanistically, the treatment of 4-OI increased the level of IL-10 and activates STAT3/β-endorphin pathway in the spinal cord, and the analgesia effect of itaconate was impaired in IL-10 -/- mice. Finally, we showed that the upregulation of IL-10 induced by 4-OI was mainly from spinal neurons through Nrf2 pathway. This study demonstrated the analgesic effect of endogenous and exogenous itaconate in the neuropathic pain model, suggesting that the spinal IL-10/STAT3/β-endorphin pathway might mediate the analgesia effect of itaconate.

    Abstract: Molecular generation (MG) via machine learning (ML) has speeded drug structural optimization, especially for targets with a large amount of reported bioactivity data. However, molecular generation for structural optimization is often powerless for new targets. DNA-encoded library (DEL) can generate systematic, target-specific activity data, including novel targets with few or unknown activity data. Therefore, this study aims to overcome the limitation of molecular generation in the structural optimization for the new target. Firstly, we generated molecules using the structure-affinity data (2.96 million samples) for 3C-like protease (3CLpro) from our own-built DEL platform to get rid of using public databases (e.g., CHEMBL and ZINC). Subsequently, to analyze the effect of transfer learning on the positive rate of the molecule generation model, molecular docking and affinity model based on DEL data were applied to explore the enhanced impact of transfer learning on molecule generation. In addition, the generated molecules are subjected to multiple filtering, including physicochemical properties, drug-like properties, and pharmacophore evaluation, molecular docking to determine the molecules for further study and verified by molecular dynamics simulation.

    Abstract: Nowadays, both urbanization and cropland expansion are hot issues. However, research related to the spatiotemporal interaction between urbanization and cropland expansion and their socioeconomic determinants remains scarce. Accordingly, this research takes the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (MRUA) as the research area by combining spatial analysis, sensitivity analysis, and the spatial gravity model. To achieve this goal, we identified the area of the construction land expansion and cropland expansion, the sensitivity of cropland expansion to construction land expansion, and the shifting trajectory of gravity centers of construction land expansion and cropland expansion and their interaction during 2000–2020, respectively. Additionally, the geographically weighted regression model was utilized to explore the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of four socioeconomic determinants of the interaction between construction land expansion and cropland expansion. The results are as follows: 1) the area of the expanded construction land and the expanded cropland and the sensitivity of cropland expansion to construction land expansion show an overall increasing pattern; 2) the gravity center of the expanded construction land shifted toward the northeast, whereas that of the expanded cropland moved to the southeast but with similar moving distances (17.83 and 15.37 km, respectively); 3) the GDP has an increasing positive effect on the interaction of the construction land expansion and cropland expansion, whereas the investment in fixed assets shows an increasing negative effect during 2000–2020. The GDP in the agricultural sector and population displays a stable influence. This article offers a solution for decision makers to promote the interaction between construction land and cropland.

    Abstract: A clear understanding of cropland expansion dynamics and their effects is vital for cropland protection and food security. However, the trajectories of cropland expansion have been less discussed. This study referred to the modes of landscape expansion and assessed the cropland expansion trajectory in three urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and its impact on cropland fragmentation. Specifically, we identified three cropland expansion trajectories using the landscape expansion index, namely, infilling, edge-expansion, and outlying. Moreover, the surface relief amplitude model was employed to characterize the relief amplitude effect on cropland expansion trajectories. By coupling landscape metrics (e.g., patch density, landscape shape index, the largest patch index, and aggregation index) and Spearman correlation analysis, the relationship between cropland expansion trajectories and cropland fragmentation was assessed. Results show that (1) three urban agglomerations experience cropland expansion, in which the edge-expansion trajectory is primary, followed by infilling and outlying trajectories; (2) the cumulative frequency curve indicates that infilling and edge-expansion trajectories are likely to be distributed in low topographic relief amplitude regions, while the outlying trajectory is located in relatively higher topographic relief amplitude regions; and (3) infilling and edge-expansion trajectories contribute to a significantly positive relationship with the decrease of cropland fragmentation, while the outlying trajectory has a negative relationship with cropland fragmentation. This research highlights that cropland protection policies should considerably focus on the trajectory of cropland expansion, not only request the total area of cropland in a dynamic balance.
