Abstract: Climate change and anthropogenic pressures have significantly affected coastal environments. This study obtained historical data on harmful algal blooms (HABs) and nutrient patterns over a 30-year period to explore responses to long-term climate change and anthropogenic pressure indicators. Although the surrounding area has achieved great economic success over the past 30 years, the Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) has been seriously affected by various pollutants and is threatened by increasing eutrophication and HABs due to climate change and anthropogenic pressures. In the ZJB, HABs rarely occurred before the 1980s but have occurred periodically and frequently since the 2000s. The largest HAB covered a cumulative area of 310 km 2 in 2005. Most of the HABs occurred during spring. Additionally, the dominant phytoplankton species were Skeletonema costatum and Phaeocystis globosa , accounting for 37.50 and 43.75% of the HABs observed, respectively. Anthropogenic pressures have caused the nutrient regime to significantly increased in the ZJB over the past three decades ( P & lt; 0.05). Specifically, the concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) increased threefold from the beginning of the 1990 to 2019 period, while the dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentration increased 21-fold. Unsynchronized variation in nutrient patterns has led to changes in the composition of nutrients, and the ZJB ecosystem has shifted from a P-limited oligotrophic state before the 2000s to an N-limited eutrophic state. Anthropogenic pressure indicators showed a significant linear correlation with nutrients ( P & lt; 0.05), but climate change indicators did not play a direct role in the eutrophication problem in the ZJB during this period ( P & gt; 0.05). Therefore, integrated land-ocean environment management should be introduced to reduce land-based pollution sources, mitigate eutrophication, and curb the blooms of harmful algae in the ZJB.

Abstract: Coastal eutrophication is a major issue of marine pollution. The main factors controlling eutrophication must be identified to ensure effective marine environmental management according to the respective local conditions. Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB), located northwest of the South China Sea, is a semi-closed bay influenced by complex water flows and the development of surrounding cities. In this study, we investigated the development of nutrient concentrations and compositions in ZJB seawater over the past 20 years and the factors influencing eutrophication based on several field investigations from 2006 to 2022 and historical data. High concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were the main contributors to the severe long-term eutrophication in ZJB; however, light eutrophication was observed in the outer bay, primarily caused by chemical oxygen demand (COD) and DIP. The primary sources of COD and nutrients were riverine freshwater, sewage outfalls, mariculture and domestic effluents carried by rivers. Tidal effects diluted the nutrient concentrations in the bay with seawater from the outer bay, thereby playing a key role in nutrient redistribution. The DIN: DIP ratio of ZJB showed long-term nitrogen restriction and excess phosphorus, primarily owing to mariculture activities. Marine undertakings can exert various impacts on water quality. Eliminating illegal aquaculture and launching aquaculture tailwater treatment can improve water quality, whereas practices such as channel dredging may worsen it. This study demonstrates the intricate dynamics of the ZJB ecosystem and offers valuable insights for effective environmental management and conservation efforts.

Abstract: Thyroid cancer (TC), was the fastest-rising tumor of all malignancies in the world and China, predominantly differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). However, evidence on TC stage distribution and influencing factors of late-stage were limited in China. Methods We carried out a retrospective study and enrolled TC patients who were first diagnosed and hospitalized in 8 hospitals in China in 2017. Logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between influencing factors and DTC stage. We extracted eligible primary DTC records newly diagnosed in 2017 from the USA's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We compared clinicopathological features and surgical treatment between our DTC records and those from the SEER database. Results A total of 1970 eligible patients were included, with 1861 DTC patients with known stage. Among patients ≥45 years old, males (OR = 1.76, 95%CI 1.17–2.65) and those with new rural cooperative medical scheme insurance (NCMS) (OR = 1.99, 95%CI 1.38–2.88) had higher risks of late-stage DTC (stage III-IV). Compared with SEER database, over-diagnosis is more common in China [more DTC patients with onset age & lt; 45 years old (50.3 vs. 40.7%, P & lt; 0.001), with early-stage (81.2 vs. 76.0%, P & lt; 0.001), and with tumors & lt;2cm (74.9 vs. 63.7%, P & lt; 0.001)]. Compared with the USA, TC treatment is more conservative in China. The proportion of lobectomy in our database was significantly higher than that in the SEER database (41.3 vs. 17.0%, P & lt; 0.001). Conclusions Unique risk factors are found to be associated with late-stage DTC in China. The differences in the aspect of clinicopathological features and surgical approaches between China and the USA indicate that potential over-diagnosis and over-surgery exist, and disparities on surgery extent may need further consideration. The findings provided references for other countries with similar patterns.

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal malignancies worldwide. It is inadequate to handle in terms of staging and restaging only based on morphological imaging modalities and serum surrogate markers. And the correct and timely staging of CRC is imperative to prognosis and management. When compared to established sequential, multimodal conventional diagnostic methods, the molecular and functional imaging 18 F-FDG PET/CT shows superiorities for tailoring appropriate treatment maneuvers to each patient. This review aims to summarize the utilities of 18 F-FDG PET/CT in CRC, focusing on primary staging, follow-up assessment of tumor responses and diagnostic of recurrence. In addition, we also summarize the technical considerations of PET/CT and the conventional imaging modalities in those patients who are either newly diagnosed with CRC or has already been treated from this cancer.

Abstract: Oxyclozanide is an effective anthelmintic and has shown good properties in other ways including anti-adenovirus, anti-biofilm, antifungal, and antibacterial activity. This study aimed to investigate the acute and subacute 28-days repeated dose oral toxicity of an oxyclozanide suspension in Wistar rats. A high oral lethal dose (LD 50 ) of 3,707 mg/kg was observed in the acute toxicity test. During the 28-days time period, no obvious adverse effects or death were detected. Histopathological changes were observed in the heart, liver, and kidney of animals treated with high dose of oxyclozanide. Based on the hematological parameters, there were no statistical differences between the oxyclozanide-treated group and the control group. For biochemistry assays, ALP, AST, GLU, TBIL, GLO, TG, BUN, UA, LDH, and CK were statistically changed in the treatment groups. These data suggested that the LD 50 of oxyclozanide was ~3,707 mg/kg body weight (BW), and the lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL) of oxyclozanide was at a dose of 74 mg/kg in rats.

Abstract: Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is an important respiratory pig pathogen that causes substantial losses in the worldwide swine industry. Chronic or subclinical infection with no apparent clinical symptoms poses a challenge for preventing transmission between herds. Rapid diagnostics is important for the control of epidemic diseases. In this study, we formulated an A. pleuropneumoniae species-specific apxIVA -based C RISPR/Cas12a- a ssisted r apid d etection platform (Card) that combines recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) of target DNA and subsequent Cas12a ssDNase activation. Card has a detection limit of 10 CFUs of A. pleuropneumoniae , and there is no cross-reactivity with other common swine pathogens. The detection process can be completed in 1 h, and there was 100% agreement between the conventional apxIVA -based PCR and Card in detecting A. pleuropneumoniae in lung samples. Microplate fluorescence readout enables high-throughput use in diagnostic laboratories, and naked eye and lateral flow test readouts enable use at the point of care. We conclude that Card is a versatile, rapid, accurate molecular diagnostic platform suitable for use in both laboratory and low-resource settings.
