    Abstract: Occupational self-efficacy, which refers to the belief that one is competent to fulfill work-related tasks or activities, has attracted increasing attention in recent years. The six-item version of the Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale (OSS-6) is an excellent tool for evaluating occupational self-efficacy; however, there is currently no report of the reliability and validity of the OSS-6 among Chinese people. This study aimed to translate the OSS-6 into Chinese and evaluate its reliability and validity in a sample of Chinese employees. A total of 433 junior staff at several firms completed the Chinese version of the OSS-6, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire, the in-role performance scale, and the career calling scale. Four weeks later, 94 participants were recalled and were retested using the OSS-6. Factor analysis results supported the one-factor model of the OSS-6. Excellent internal consistency was obtained with the OSS-6. Additionally, the OSS-6 results were significantly correlated with general self-efficacy, self-esteem, job satisfaction, in-role performance, and career calling. Furthermore, occupational self-efficacy was found to partially mediate the effects of career calling on job satisfaction and in-role performance. The results of this study supported the cross-cultural consistency of the structure of the OSS-6 and showed that the Chinese version of the OSS-6 demonstrated excellent validity and reliability. Therefore, the Chinese version of the OSS-6 can be used as an assessment tool for evaluating occupational self-efficacy in future studies.

    Abstract: This study aimed to examine the impact of sleep quality on occupational well-being in employees by primarily focusing on the mediating role of occupational self-efficacy. Methods A total of 487 junior staff completed a set of questionnaires comprised Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scale, Occupational Self-efficacy Scale, and occupational well-being measurements. Results The results revealed that both sleep quality and occupational self-efficacy were significantly correlated with occupational well-being. The structural equation modeling analysis and the bootstrap test indicated that occupational self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of poor sleep quality on occupational well-being. Discussion These findings expand upon existing research on the relationship between sleep quality and well-being among occupational workers, shed light on the correlation of poor sleep quality with occupational well-being, and are valuable in promoting the occupational well-being of employees.

    Abstract: In this study, we discuss the effects of attachment on depression and the mediating roles of self-esteem and rumination in Chinese seniors. We assessed 431 using the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Ruminative Responses Scale, and the Short Form of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance significantly predicted depression in seniors. Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance positively predicted rumination but negatively predicted self-esteem. Structural equation models showed that rumination and self-esteem fully mediated the effects of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance on depression. The attachment of seniors is related to depression, and self-esteem and rumination have chain mediating effects between attachment and depression.

    Abstract: A criminal act can be regarded as an irrational decision-making process. Therefore, understanding differences in the criminal decision-making process would shed light on criminal behavior. We utilized dual processing theory to propose that offenders’ differences in decision-making may cause them to adopt non-adaptive behaviors, such as high reference point setting, abnormal reward–punishment sensitivity, delayed discounting rate, and decision-making style. Our study compares differences in these indicators between offenders ( n = 518) and non-offenders ( n = 636) in a diverse sample of Chinese adults. The results showed that compared with non-offenders, offenders had higher relative deprivation, reward sensitivity, and delayed discounting rates but lower punishment sensitivity and vigilance in decision-making. A logistic regression analysis also shows that the above factors were significant predictive indicators for the commission of crimes.

    Abstract: Acute sleep deprivation (SD) seriously affects cognitive functions, such as attention, memory, and response inhibition. Previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated a close relationship between the functional activities of the precuneus (PC) and the function of alert attention. However, the specific effect of the PC on attention decline after acute SD has not been elucidated. In this study, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the relationship between the changes of the PC functional connectivity and alertness decline after total SD. Methods Thirty healthy, right-handed adult men participated in the experiment. Alert attention and functional connectivity were assessed by the Psychomotor Vigilance Test and a resting-state fMRI scan before and after total SD. The region of interest to region of interest (“ROI-to-ROI”) correlation was employed to analyze the relationship between the PC and other brain regions after acute SD. Results Participants showed decreased alert attention after total SD. In addition, SD induced decreased functional connectivity between the right PC and the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG). Moreover, there was a significant correlation between the decreased PC functional connectivity and alertness decline after total SD. Conclusion Our findings suggest that the interruption of the connection between the right PC and the right MFG is related to the observed decline in alert attention after acute SD. These results provide evidence further elucidating the cognitive impairment model of SD.

    Abstract: Visual experience modulates the intensity of evoked brain activity in response to training-related stimuli. Spontaneous fluctuations in the restful brain actively encode previous learning experience. However, few studies have considered how real-world visual experience alters the level of baseline brain activity in the resting state. This study aimed to investigate how short-term real-world visual experience modulates baseline neuronal activity in the resting state using the amplitude of low-frequency ( & lt;0.08 Hz) fluctuation (ALFF) and a visual expertise model of radiologists, who possess fine-level visual discrimination skill of homogeneous stimuli. In detail, a group of intern radiologists ( n = 32) were recruited. The resting-state fMRI data and the behavioral data regarding their level of visual expertise in radiology and face recognition were collected before and after 1 month of training in the X-ray department in a local hospital. A machine learning analytical method, i.e., support vector machine, was used to identify subtle changes in the level of baseline brain activity. Our method led to a superb classification accuracy of 86.7% between conditions. The brain regions with highest discriminative power were the bilateral cingulate gyrus, the left superior frontal gyrus, the bilateral precentral gyrus, the bilateral superior parietal lobule, and the bilateral precuneus. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate baseline neurodynamic alterations in response to real-world visual experience using longitudinal experimental design. These results suggest that real-world visual experience alters the resting-state brain representation in multidimensional neurobehavioral components, which are closely interrelated with high-order cognitive and low-order visual factors, i.e., attention control, working memory, memory, and visual processing. We propose that our findings are likely to help foster new insights into the neural mechanisms of visual expertise.

    Abstract: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is the most common and dominant inherited neuromuscular dystrophy disease in adults, involving multiple organs, including the brain. Although structural measurements showed that DM1 is predominantly associated with white-matter damage, they failed to reveal the dysfunction of the white-matter. Recent studies have demonstrated that the functional activity of white-matter is of great significance and has given us insights into revealing the mechanisms of brain disorders. Materials and methods Using resting-state fMRI data, we adopted a clustering analysis to identify the white-matter functional networks and calculated functional connectivity between these networks in 16 DM1 patients and 18 healthy controls (HCs). A two-sample t -test was conducted between the two groups. Partial correlation analyzes were performed between the altered white-matter FC and clinical MMSE or HAMD scores. Results We identified 13 white-matter functional networks by clustering analysis. These white-matter functional networks can be divided into a three-layer network (superficial, middle, and deep) according to their spatial distribution. Compared to HCs, DM1 patients showed increased FC within intra-layer white-matter and inter-layer white-matter networks. For intra-layer networks, the increased FC was mainly located in the inferior longitudinal fasciculus, prefrontal cortex, and corpus callosum networks. For inter-layer networks, the increased FC of DM1 patients is mainly located in the superior corona radiata and deep networks. Conclusion Results demonstrated the abnormalities of white-matter functional connectivity in DM1 located in both intra-layer and inter-layer white-matter networks and suggested that the pathophysiology mechanism of DM1 may be related to the white-matter functional dysconnectivity. Furthermore, it may facilitate the treatment development of DM1.

    Abstract: Cardiac sympathetic nerve system (SNS) might play an important role in arrhythmogenesis of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM). This study aims to assess the activity of cardiac SNS in ACM patients by heart rate variability (HRV), and to investigate its predictive value for sustained ventricular tachycardia (sVT). Methods A total of 88 ACM patients and 65 sex- and age- matched healthy participants were enrolled. The time domain measures were used to evaluate the activity of cardiac SNS. An independent cohort with 48 ACM patients was as the validation cohort. Results ACM patients had lower levels of standard deviation of all NN intervals (SDNN) [118.0 (90.3, 136.8) vs. 152.0 (132.5, 174.5) ms, p & lt; 0.001] compared with healthy participants. Further analysis showed ACM patients with sVT had lower levels of SDNN than those without sVT (105.0 ± 28.1 vs. 131.8 ± 33.1 ms, p & lt; 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed SDNN was independently associated with sVT in ACM patients [odds ratio (OR) 0.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.45–0.78), p & lt; 0.001]. Receiver operating characteristics curve demonstrated SDNN had clinical values in predicting sVT in ACM patients [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.73, 95% CI (0.63–0.84), p & lt; 0.001], which was verified in the validation cohort. Conclusion The present study suggests that HRV is impaired in patients with ACM, and the SDNN level has a moderate value in risk stratification for sVT in ACM patients. In addition, the finding might provide new target for the further management of ACM with integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine.
