    Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of 0.01% atropine eye drops on accommodative system parameters among teenagers with low myopia. Methods: Ninety-five myopic teenagers [39 boys (8.69 ± 2.473) and 56 girls (8.54 ± 2.054) aged 5–17 years] with no history of eye disease were enrolled. Biometric and accommodative system parameters were evaluated before and at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months of 0.01% atropine eye drop instillation. Results: Participants without accommodative demand at 6 months demonstrated insignificant changes after the atropine instillation (all p & gt; 0.05). Nevertheless, there were significant differences in accommodative sensitivity, accommodative amplitude, accommodative responsiveness, and negative relative accommodation (NRA) at 3 months compared with baseline after atropine instillation (all p & lt; 0.05). Except spherical equivalent refraction, cornea thickness, intraocular pressure, and axial length were stable after the 0.01% atropine instillation (all p & gt; 0.05). Conclusion: Morphologically, current measurements suggested that 0.01% atropine had favorable reduction of accommodation for childhood low myopia over a half-year period.

    Abstract: Purpose: Dry eye disease (DED) is projected to have increasing public health burden in China with the aging population. No published studies on the epidemiology of DED have been found in grasslands. We estimated DED prevalence among older adults living in grasslands of northern China and investigated its associated factors and impact on vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL). Methods: A multistage cluster random sampling technique was used to select Mongolian and Han participants aged over 40 from November 2020 to May 2021 in this area. An assessment of DED was performed with Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, Schirmer's I test (ST), and Tear film break up time (TBUT). All the participants completed the Chinese version of National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) assessing VR-QoL. Results: Of the 1,400 enumerated residents, 1,287 were examined. The overall age and gender standardized prevalence of DED was 34.5%, of which, 32.6% of Mongolian and 35.4% of Han had DED. In a multivariate model, statistically significant associations were found with advancing age [odds ratio (OR) 1.03, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02–1.04], female gender (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.04–1.68), smoking (OR 0.7, 95% CI 0.5–0.98), anti-fatigue eye-drop use (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.41–0.77), milk product intake (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.39–0.77), number of household members (OR 0.8, 95% CI 0.72–0.88). DED was associated with lower scores on VR-QoL (β= −0.14, P & lt; 0.01). Similar results were observed when analyses were stratified by ethnicity. Conclusions: The novelty-associated factors for DED in the grasslands area were anti-fatigue eye drop use, milk product intake, and number of household members. DED and its components were associated with VR-QoL. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.

    Abstract: Gender differences in ocular biometric measurements of opposite-sex and same-sex twin pairs are still unclear. We aimed to investigate the difference between ocular biometric measurements in adolescent twin pairs. Materials and methods This retrospective study included a total of 64 eyes of 64 adolescents from 32 twins. The ocular biometric measurements and refractive prediction error (RE) were acquired from four groups of dizygotic (DZ) twins: boys from same-sex twin-pairs (SSM, n = 20), boys from opposite-sex twin-pairs (OSM, n = 8), girls from opposite-sex twin-pairs (OSF, n = 8), and girls from same-sex twin-pairs (SSF, n = 29). Results The mean age of the patient was 9.92 ± 2.84 (range: 6–18) years. Overall, boys had higher height, AL, WTW, but lower Ks, and Kf than girls ( p & lt; 0.05). Specifically, SSF was found to have the lowest lens thickness (LT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT), white to white (WTW), and axial length (AL) levels, while the highest keratometry readings in the flat (Kf) and steep (Ks) levels compared with OSM, OSF, and SSM adolescents ( p & lt; 0.05). Compared with the OSF adolescents, ACD levels of the SSF adolescents were significantly lower [(2.99 ± 0.35) and (3.26 ± 0.15) mm, p = 0.033)], but Kf indicator was significantly larger [(43.93 ± 1.64) and (42.91 ± 1.75), p = 0.016)]. Conclusion Our study indicates that there was a significant difference in ocular biometric measurements between twin pairs, and sharing the uterus with a DZ twin SSF has smaller ocular indicator measurements. Our findings provide information on the eyeball and refractive development in adolescents.

    Abstract: The prevalence of visual impairment (VI) and age-related eye diseases has increased dramatically with the growing aging population in mainland China. However, there is limited comprehensive evidence on the progress of ophthalmic epidemiological research in mainland China to enhance our awareness of the prevention of eye diseases to inform public health policy. Here, we conducted a literature review of the population-based epidemiology of VI and age-related eye diseases in mainland China from the 1st of January 1946 to the 20th of October 2021. No language restrictions were applied. There was significant demographic and geographic variation in the epidemic of VI and age-related eye diseases. There are several factors known to be correlated to VI and age-related eye diseases, including age, gender, family history, lifestyle, biological factors, and environmental exposures; however, evidence relating to genetic predisposition remains unclear. In addition, posterior segment eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, are amongst the major causes of irreversible visual impairments in the senile Chinese population. There remains a significant prevention gap, with only a few individuals showing awareness and achieving optimal medical care with regards to age-related eye diseases. Multiple challenges and obstacles need to be overcome, including the accelerated aging of the Chinese population, the lack of structured care delivery in many underdeveloped regions, and unequal access to care. Despite the progress to date, there are few well-conducted multi-center population-based studies following a single protocol in mainland China, which findings can hopefully provide valuable cues for governmental decision-making and assist in addressing and halting the incidence of VI and age-related eye diseases in China.

    Abstract: Environmentally friendly microcapsules are becoming more and more widely used due to the increasing demand for environmental safety in pesticides. To compare the impact of differences in wheat herbicide phytotoxicity of different gibberellic acid microcapsule suspensions, two microcapsule suspensions were separately formulated using the phase transfer method and the in situ polymerization method, and the key performance indicators are the size of microcapsules and the degree of encapsulation. Meanwhile, through field trials, the pharmacological and detoxification effects of different types of microcapsule suspensions on the herbicide methyldisulfuron in wheat fields were compared. The microcapsule suspension was prepared by the phase transfer method and the particle sizes D 10 , D 50 , and D 90 are 0.990, 2.136, and 5.201 μm, respectively; the microcapsule suspension was prepared by the in situ polymerization, the particle sizes D 10 , D 50 , and D 90 are 4.365, 8.547, and 16.782 μm, respectively. The encapsulation rate of the microcapsules prepared by the phase transfer method and the in situ polymerization method was 86.9% and 91.2%, being higher than 80%, the national standard for capsules. Meanwhile, the release rate conforms to first-order release kinetics in 0–4 days and zero-order release kinetics in 5–28 days. The plot trials' result showed that the detoxification effect of the microcapsules prepared by the in situ polymerization method was significantly better than the detoxification effect of the microcapsules prepared by the phase transfer method and the control agent. The growth index of wheat was higher than that of the untreated check after using the agent.

    Abstract: Site-specific N-glycosylation characterization requires intact N-glycopeptide analysis based on suitable tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) method. Electron-transfer/higher-energy collisional dissociation (EThcD), stepped collision energy/higher-energy collisional dissociation (sceHCD), higher-energy collisional dissociation-product-dependent electron-transfer dissociation (HCD-pd-ETD), and a hybrid mass spectrometry fragmentation method EThcD-sceHCD have emerged as valuable approaches for glycoprotein analysis. However, each of them incurs some compromise, necessitating the systematic performance comparisons when applied to the analysis of complex clinical samples (e.g., plasma, urine, cells, and tissues). Herein, we compared the performance of EThcD-sceHCD with those previous approaches (EThcD, sceHCD, HCD-pd-ETD, and sceHCD-pd-ETD) in the intact N-glycopeptide analysis, and determined its applicability for clinical N-glycoproteomic study. The intact N-glycopeptides of distinct samples, namely, plasma from prostate cancer (PCa) patients, urine from immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) patients, human hepatocarcinoma cell line (HepG2), and thyroid tissues from thyroid cancer (TC) patients were analyzed by these methods. We found that EThcD-sceHCD outperformed other methods in the balance of depth and accuracy of intact N-glycopeptide identification, and sceHCD and EThcD-sceHCD have good complementarity. EThcD-sceHCD holds great potential for biomarker discovery from clinical samples.

    Abstract: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) for assessment of hematological malignancies’ therapeutic response. Methods PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched up to August 2021 to identify studies reporting the diagnostic performance of WB-MRI for the assessment of hematological malignancies’ treatment response. A bivariate random-effects model was applied for the generation of the pooled diagnostic performance. Results Fourteen studies with 457 patients with lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and sarcoma (very small proportion) were analyzed. Overall pooled sensitivity and specificity of WB-MRI were 0.88 (95% CI: 0.73–0.95) and 0.86 (95% CI: 0.73–0.93), respectively. Studies using whole-body diffusion-weighted imaging (WB-DWI) showed higher sensitivity than those that did not (0.94 vs. 0.55, p = 0.02). The pooled concordance rate of WB-MRI to assess hematological malignancies’ treatment response with reference standard was 0.78 (95% CI: 0.59–0.96). WB-MRI and PET/CT showed similar diagnostic performance (sensitivity [0.83 vs. 0.92, p = 0.11] and specificity [0.87 vs. 0.76, p = 0.73] ). Conclusion WB-MRI has high diagnostic performance for hematological malignancies’ treatment response assessment. The adding of WB-DWI is strongly associated with increased sensitivity.

    Abstract: It is still controversial whether the proportion of crescents below 50% can be an independent predictive risk factor for poor prognosis in IgAN patients. We reported the significance of different proportions of crescents on the clinical features and the cut-off value of crescents in predicting the occurrence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in patients with IgAN. Methods We retrospectively analyzed biopsy-proven primary IgAN patients in Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital from 2007 to 2019. The patients were divided into 5 groups on the basis of crescent proportion as follows: 0 ( n = 647), & lt; 10% ( n = 221), 10 to 24% ( n = 272), 25 to 49% ( n = 80), and ≥50% ( n = 22). The primary endpoint was defined as ESKD, and the secondary endpoint was the combined renal endpoint (≥50% reduction in eGFR or ESKD). A validation cohort of 346 patients were enrolled from Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University. Cox regression model and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were performed. Results A total of 1242 eligible patients with biopsy-proven IgAN were recorded in the database, compared with the non-crescent group, patients in the crescent group had lower levels of hemoglobin (Hb) and albumin (Alb), higher levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), 24h urinary protein and hematuria, a higher proportion of mesangial hypercellularity (M1), endocapillary hypercellularity (E1), segmental glomerulosclerosis (S1), and tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis (T1/T2) ( p & lt; 0.05). A higher crescent proportion was associated with lower levels of Hb, ALB, eGFR and serum IgG ( p & lt; 0.05), higher levels of SCr, BUN, increasing amounts of 24 h urinary protein, increasing proportion of M1 and E1, and increasing severity of interstitial inflammatory infiltration. During the median follow-up of 43 months (range 6-151), 63 individuals (7.0%) reached the primary outcome of ESKD and 99 patients (11.1%) reached the combined renal endpoint. 34(7.5%), 21 (13.3%), 24(12.2%), 14(21.5%) and 6(31.6%) patients reached the combined renal endpoint in the above five groups in crescents 0, & lt;10%, 10∼24%, 25∼49% and ≥50%, respectively. A total of 274(62.6%) cases in the crescent group and 254 (55.7%) cases in the non-crescent group received immunosuppressive therapy. Multivariate Cox regression showed that crescents ≥50% was an independent risk factor for the progression of ESKD ( p = 0.003) and crescents ≥25% was an independent risk factor for the combined renal endpoint( p & lt; 0.001). The receiver operating characteristic curve showed that IgAN patients with crescents ≥43.7% had a higher risk of ESKD, even with immunosuppressants (Sensitivity = 75.7%,specificity = 89.6%, p & lt; 0.001). This discovery cohort and the validation cohort further confirmed that patients with crescents & lt;43.7% had better renal prognosis than those with crescents ≥43.7% in the whole group and those with immunosuppressants ( p & lt; 0.001). Conclusion IgAN patients with crescents had more severe clinicopathological features and poorer prognosis. Crescents ≥50% was an independent risk factor for the progression of ESKD and crescents ≥25% was an independent risk factor for ≥50% reduction in eGFR or ESKD in treated and untreated IgAN patients. Crescents ≥43.7% was an independent risk factor for ESKD in those with immunosuppressants.

    Abstract: The activated complement profile in IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is still unclear. Our study investigated the profile of urinary complements in IgAN patients and its correlations with clinical and pathological characteristics. Methods Urinary protein abundance was detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) in 50 IgAN, 50 membranous nephropathy (MN), and 68 healthy controls (HC). Then, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were performed to identify differentially expressed proteins in IgAN patients. The differentially expressed complement proteins were screened in IgAN patients, and their correlations with laboratory or pathological parameters were analyzed. Thereafter, 7 complement components were validated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the urine samples of 45 IgAN patients. Results There were 786 differentially expressed proteins between IgAN and HC. KEGG analysis showed that differentially expressed urinary proteins in IgAN were enriched with complement. Of these, 67% of urinary complement protein abundance was associated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate. The urinary complement-related protein collectin12 (colec12), complement H factor (CFH), complement H factor-related protein 2 (CFHR2), and complement B factor (CFB) were positively correlated with serum creatinine; colec12, CFHR2, CFB, and C8g were positively correlated with glomerulosclerosis; CFH, CFHR2, C8g, and C9 were positively correlated with tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis. Conclusion Abnormally increased components of complement pathways significantly correlate with reduced renal function, proteinuria, and renal histological damage in IgAN. It could provide a potential biomarker panel for monitoring IgAN and provide clues for therapeutic choice targeting complement system of IgAN patients.

    Abstract: Norovirus is widely recognized as a leading cause of both sporadic cases and outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) across all age groups. The GII.4 Sydney 2012 variant has consistently prevailed since 2012, distinguishing itself from other variants that typically circulate for a period of 2–4 years. Objective This review aims to systematically summarize the prevalence of norovirus gastroenteritis following emergence of the GII.4 Sydney 2012 variant. Methods Data were collected from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases spanning the period between January 2012 and August 2022. A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the global prevalence and distribution patterns of norovirus gastroenteritis from 2012 to 2022. Results The global pooled prevalence of norovirus gastroenteritis was determined to be 19.04% (16.66–21.42%) based on a comprehensive analysis of 70 studies, which included a total of 85,798 sporadic cases with acute gastroenteritis and identified 15,089 positive cases for norovirus. The prevalence rate is higher in winter than other seasons, and there are great differences among countries and age groups. The pooled attack rate of norovirus infection is estimated to be 36.89% (95% CI, 36.24–37.55%), based on a sample of 6,992 individuals who tested positive for norovirus out of a total population of 17,958 individuals exposed during outbreak events. Conclusion The global prevalence of norovirus gastroenteritis is always high, necessitating an increased emphasis on prevention and control strategies with vaccine development for this infectious disease, particularly among the children under 5 years old and the geriatric population (individuals over 60 years old).
