    Abstract: Purpose: This study used a moderated mediation model to test the mediating effect of general self-efficacy on the relationship between post-traumatic growth (PTG) and creativity and the moderating effect of deliberate rumination in the second path of the indirect mediation path during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A sample of 881 university students from Guangdong Province, China, was surveyed with the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, the Runco Ideational Behavior Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Deliberate Rumination Inventory. SPSS (23 version) and PROCESS (3.3 version) were used for correlation analyses, mediation analysis, and moderated mediation analysis. Results: (1) PTG was positively correlated with creativity, self-efficacy, and deliberate rumination. Creativity was positively correlated with self-efficacy and deliberate rumination. Deliberate rumination was positively correlated with self-efficacy. (2) Self-efficacy mediated the relationship between PTG and creativity. (3) Deliberate rumination moderated the second half of the path of “PTG → self-efficacy → creativity.” Conclusions: PTG affected creativity directly and also indirectly through self-efficacy. In particular, deliberate rumination moderated the relationship between self-efficacy and creativity, such that the association was stronger when the incidence of deliberate rumination was low. These results provide a more comprehensive understanding of the positive link between PTG and creativity.

    Abstract: In recent years, high-quality rice varieties have been widely cultivated for food production in southern China. However, changes in the yield performance of different high-quality rice varieties are still unclear. In this study, the yield and yield components of 710 different types (hybrid or inbred rice and japonica or indica ) of high-quality rice varieties were investigated in six provinces from 2007 to 2017. The results showed that, from 2007 to 2017, the grain yield and yield traits, including the number of spikelets per panicle and seed-set percentage, of high-quality indica rice varieties increased significantly, while the number of panicles decreased only in indica inbred rice. The grain yield of high-quality japonica rice also increased significantly, whereas japonica hybrid rice increased the number of spikelets per panicle and decreased the number of panicles. Compared with inbred rice, hybrid rice had a significant increase in grain yield due to a higher number of spikelets, rather than a lower number of panicles and seed-set percentage. Meanwhile, japonica rice showed higher grain yield than indica rice, which was attributed to seed-set percentage and an optimized structure between the number of panicles and the number of spikelets. In addition, the coefficient of variation of the grain yield of japonica rice decreased, whereas that of indica rice increased over time, and those of the number of panicles and seed-set percentage remained stable. Among the six provinces, Zhejiang had the highest grain yield because the number of spikelets per panicle and seed-set percentage increased over time. Our results suggested that, based on an increase in the yield potential of high-quality rice varieties over the past 11 years, future breeding of high-quality rice should be emphasized to improve the number of panicles and seed-set percentage for hybrid rice and the number of spikelets for inbred rice, especially the grain weight for indica inbred rice.

    Abstract: Purpose: This study used a moderated mediation model to explore the relationship between general self-efficacy (GSE) and psychological resilience (PR) and the associated mechanisms, the mediating role of posttraumatic growth (PTG), and the moderating role of deliberate rumination (DR) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Knowledge of the relationship between these four variables examined further understanding of the PR improvement mechanism of college students and even the general public. Methods: The college students who participated in this study came from an independent college in Guangdong Province, China. A total of 918 college students completed the survey, and the final data sample size was 881. SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS (version 3.3) were used to conduct Pearson's correlation analysis and hierarchical regression linear analysis on the data. Results: (1) The correlation analysis showed that GSE and PR were positively correlated and that PTG was positively correlated with GSE and PR. DR was positively correlated with GSE, PTG, and PR. (2) The results of mediation analysis showed that GSE had a direct predictive effect on DR, and PTG partially mediated the relationship between the two. (3) The results of moderating effect analysis showed that DR hindered the effect of GSE on PTG but enhanced the positive impact of PTG on PR. Conclusions: General self-efficacy can improve PR under the mediating influence of PTG. DR played a positive moderating role in the relationship between GSE and PTG, and played a negative moderating role in the relationship between PTG and PR. These results advance the understanding of the mechanism between GSE and PR.

    Abstract: The highly conserved histones in different species seem to represent a very ancient and universal innate host defense system against microorganisms in the biological world. Histones are the essential part of nuclear matter and act as a control switch for DNA transcription. However, histones are also found in the cytoplasm, cell membranes, and extracellular fluid, where they function as host defenses and promote inflammatory responses. In some cases, extracellular histones can act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and bind to pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), thereby triggering innate immune responses and causing initial organ damage. Histones and their fragments serve as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) to directly eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites in vitro and in vivo . Histones are also involved in phagocytes-related innate immune response as components of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), neutrophil activators, and plasminogen receptors. In addition, as a considerable part of epigenetic regulation, histone modifications play a vital role in regulating the innate immune response and expression of corresponding defense genes. Here, we review the regulatory role of histones in innate immune response, which provides a new strategy for the development of antibiotics and the use of histones as therapeutic targets for inflammatory diseases, sepsis, autoimmune diseases, and COVID-19.

    Abstract: Climate warming has pronounced effects on rice production in China. However, late-seasons rice cultivars are diverse in double rice cropping systems, and the actual responses in grain yield and quality of different late-season rice cultivars to climate warming are still unclear. Methods A two-year field warming experiment was conducted by using free-air temperature increase facilities with three widely-planted late-season rice cultivars, including Taiyou398 (TY, short growth duration indica hybrid rice), Jiuxiangnian (JXN, long growth duration indica inbred rice), and Yongyou1538 (YY, long growth duration indica-japonica hybrid rice) in a double rice cropping system in subtropical China. Results Warming (1.9–2.0°C) had no significant effects on the grain yields of TY and JXN, but significantly decreased that of YY by 4.8% relative to ambient treatment due to a reduction of spikelet number. Compared to ambient treatment, the head rice yields of TY and YY did not change while that of JXN increased by 6.3% under warming conditions. Warming significantly increased the head rice rates of JXN and YY by 6.6% and 7.8%, and the chalky grain rates of TY, JXN, and YY by 79.1%, 21.6%, and 7.6%, respectively. Under warming conditions, the amylose content of JXN and YY decreased significantly by 7.5% and 8.8%, and the setback of three cultivars decreased significantly by an average of 41.5%. Conclusion Warming could improve the milling and eating qualities of long growth duration late-season rice (JXN and YY) and increase or maintain their head rice yield, even though decreased the grain yield of indica-japonica hybrid rice (YY). These results will provide a better understanding for the selection of suitable late-season rice cultivars under future climate warming conditions.

    Abstract: The threat of climate warming to global rice production has been widely addressed, but little is known about its influence on the quality of rice grains. Methods A free-air temperature increase (FATI) facility with two widely-planted high-quality cultivars was used to explore the impact of warming on the grain quality of early rice in subtropical China over 3 consecutive years. Results Compared with the control, FATI increased diurnal canopy temperature by 1.5°, and thus, rice growth duration was shortened by 4.0 d under warming. We found that warming significantly reduced both the milled rice and head rice rates relative to the control, thereby leading to a decrease in the milled rice and head rice yield by 3.9 and 8.3%, respectively. The chalky grain rate and chalkiness were increased by 19.1 and 22.2% under warming compared with the control, respectively. The content of protein, essential amino acids, and non-essential amino acids were increased by 4.1, 5.4, and 4.9% under warming, respectively. Warming reduced the amylose content and setback by 2.0 and 47.5% but increasing peak viscosity, trough viscosity, breakdown, and final viscosity by 9.5, 13.6, 5.7, and 6.0%, respectively. Conclusion Our results suggest that the deteriorated milling and appearance quality induced by warming may be an upcoming challenge for high-quality early rice production in the future.

    Abstract: Purpose: The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which has had a significant impact on people’s lives, has apparently increased the incidence of depression. Although the topic of how depression affects creativity is contested, previous research has revealed a significant relationship between the two. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the relationship and the mechanisms that operate between depression and creativity. Methods: A total of 881 students at an independent college in China completed a questionnaire consisting of the Self-Reported Depression Scale, Runco Ideational Behavior Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale, Deliberate Rumination Scale and demographic information. Among the respondents, 317 (36.0%) were male and 564 (64.0%) were female, all of whom were from the same grade. Correlation analyses were conducted, and then the researchers carried out mediation analysis and developed a moderated mediation model. Results: The results indicated that (a) depression was positively related to creativity ( r = 0.085, p & lt; 0.05); (b) psychological resilience mediated the relationship between depression and creativity; specifically, psychological resilience was negatively related to depression ( r = −0.462, p & lt; 0.01), which in turn was positively related to creativity ( r = 0.198, p & lt; 0.01); and (c) deliberate rumination moderated the relationship between depression and psychological resilience, showing a significant negative correlation with depression ( r = 0.138, p & lt; 0.01), psychological resilience ( r = 0.078, p & lt; 0.05), and creativity ( r = 0.288, p & lt; 0.05); specifically, higher levels of deliberate rumination strengthened the negative correlation between psychological resilience and depression. Conclusion: The results suggest that depression is a positive predictor of creativity and may promote creativity to some extent. Further, individuals with greater psychological resilience are more creative than those with less psychological resilience, as it is a question of whether they can and to what extent they can effectively use depression as an emotional resource. Last, an individual’s level of deliberate rumination moderates the mediating process, especially at the stage where depression is associated with psychological resilience. These findings advance understanding of the mechanisms that operate between depression and creativity.

    Abstract: The effects of climate warming on starch multi-structure and flour and starch functionality of late-season indica - japonica hybrid rice (IJHR) in double-rice cropping systems are still unclear to date. Methods A 2  years field warming experiment was conducted by using free-air temperature increase facilities with an IJHR cultivar (Yongyou1538). The starch multi-structure and flour and starch functionality of IJHR were determined. Results Experimental warming (on average 2.1°C over the 2  years) reduced the amylose content and increased the amount of short amylopectin branch-chains (degree of polymerization 6–12), possibly due to decreased granule-bound starch synthase activity and increased starch-branch enzyme activity. Additionally, the protein content, starch granule diameter, relative crystallinity, and swelling power of IJHR were enhanced by experimental warming. The changes in rice components and starch multi-structure under warming conditions resulted in high peak viscosity, breakdown, pasting temperature, gelatinization temperatures and enthalpy and low setback of rice starch and high peak viscosity and pasting temperature and low setback of rice flour. Conclusion Our results indicated that climate warming might improve the pasting viscosities and enhance the thermal stability of late-season IJHR.

    Abstract: Four P4-ATPase flippase genes, VdDrs2, VdNeo1, VdP4-4 , and VdDnf1 were identified in Verticillium dahliae , one of the most devastating phytopathogenic fungi in the world. Knock out of VdDrs2, VdNeo1 , and VdP4-4 , or knock down of VdDnf1 significantly decreased the pathogenicity of the mutants in cotton. Among the mutants, the greatest decrease in pathogenicity was observed in Δ VdDrs2 . VdDrs2 was localized to plasma membrane, vacuoles, and trans -Golgi network (TGN). In vivo observation showed that the infection of the cotton by Δ VdDrs2 was significantly delayed. The amount of two known Verticillium toxins, sulfacetamide, and fumonisin B1 in the fermentation broth produced by the Δ VdDrs2 strain was significantly reduced, and the toxicity of the crude Verticillium wilt toxins to cotton cells was attenuated. In addition, the defect of VdDrs2 impaired the synthesis of melanin and the formation of microsclerotia, and decreased the sporulation of V. dahliae . Our data indicate a key role of P4 ATPases-associated vesicle transport in toxin secretion of disease fungi and support the importance of mycotoxins in the pathogenicity of V. dahliae .
