    Abstract: Estimating the precise nutritional status of crop nitrogen (N) after flowering period is not only important to predict deficiency but the excess that could be revised by fertilization in future crops. Critical N dilution curves describing the critical N concentration ([N] c ) in plant tissues during crop growth have been used to estimate the N status of whole plants in cotton. Little is known, however, about the critical N dilution curve for specific plant organs such as cotton fruits. The objective of this study was to verify the feasibility of fruits-based critical N dilution curve as a useful diagnostic tool for diagnosing the N status of cotton crops. A 3-year field experiment was conducted with seven N application rates (0–360 kg N ha –1 ) using the high-yielding cultivars Jimian 228 and Lumian 28, which differ in maturity. The relationship between fruits dry mass (DM) and N concentration ([N]) was analyzed, and a model of [N] c for cotton fruits was constructed and validated. The results showed that fruits [N] c decreased with increasing fruits DM. The critical N dilution curve based on cotton fruits was described by the equation [N] c = 2.49 × DM –0.12 ( R 2 = 0.649, P & lt; 0.0001) across cultivar-years. The N nutrition index (NNI) of the fruits (NNI f ) with the N dilution curve was significantly related to the NNI of shoot DM, relative yield (RY), and boll density at most sampling dates. For an NNI f of approximately 1, the RY was nearly 95%, while it decreased with a decreasing NNI f below 1. The petiole nitrate-N (NO 3 -N) concentration was also linearly related to the NNI f , suggesting that the NO 3 -N concentration in the petiole was a good predictor of the NNI f . Therefore, fruits-based critical N dilution curve and the derived NNI f values will serve as a useful diagnostic tool for diagnosing N status in cotton crops.

    Abstract: Diabetic ulcers are one of the major complications of diabetes, and patients usually suffer from amputation and death due to delayed ulcer wound healing. Persistent inflammation and oxidative stress at the wound site are the main manifestations of delayed wound healing in diabetic ulcers. In addition, chronic hyperglycemia in patients can lead to circulatory accumulation of lipid peroxidation products and impaired iron metabolism pathways leading to the presence of multiple free irons in plasma. Ferroptosis, a newly discovered form of cell death, is characterized by intracellular iron overload and accumulation of iron-dependent lipid peroxides. These indicate that ferroptosis is one of the potential mechanisms of delayed wound healing in diabetic ulcers and will hopefully be a novel therapeutic target for delayed wound healing in diabetic patients. This review explored the pathogenesis of diabetic ulcer wound healing, reveals that oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation are common pathological mechanisms of ferroptosis and delayed wound healing in diabetic ulcers. Based on strong evidence, it is speculated that ferroptosis and diabetic ulcers are closely related, and have value of in-depth research. We attempted to clarify prospective associations between ferroptosis and diabetic ulcers in terms of GPX4, iron overload, ferroptosis inhibitors, AGEs, and HO-1, to provide new ideas for exploring the clinical treatment of diabetic ulcers.

    Abstract: Objective: This research aims to refresh the limited understanding about the canal and vascular structures within the epiphysis and metaphysis of the tibia and femur and their oncological significance. Methods: This study was started with characterization of a novel structure using radiographs and anatomic dissections, followed by a descriptive clinical study with 55 participants to investigate the effects of tumors on this novel discovery and a retrospective cohort study with 82 participants to investigate whether the structure would be a risk factor for tumor recurrence after the curettage of giant cell tumor of bone. Results: A new anatomical knee structure, the Lijianmin-Chengkun (LC) complex, was discovered in healthy adults, and its clinical implications were examined in this study. This new-found anatomical structure is composed of an epiphyseal and metaphyseal canal which surrounds a blood vessel, foramen, and foramen-covered synovium. All LC complexes showed similar radiographical, anatomical, and histological characteristics and were located within specific tibial and femoral intercondylar regions. These LC complexes seem to facilitate tumor residue and extension and may be a risk factor for tumor recurrence after curettage of femoral and tibial giant cell tumors ( P = 0.031). Conclusion: The LC complexes are related to local tumor recurrence and bidirectional tumor dissemination between intraosseous and intraarticular regions. These findings have opened up a new perspective and may provide new targets for intervention in malignant and aggressive tumors around the knee joint.

    Abstract: Background: As one of the main participants in health care, nurses are esteemed an important driving force for the vigorous health care development. Studies report that nurses’ proactive personality has positive effects on their job performance; however, this relationship acquires further understanding. Objective: A cross-sectional study was performed to explore the relationship between nurses’ proactive personality and job performance; the mediating role of nurses’ competency and work engagement in this relationship was also evaluated. Methods: The study was performed in a large third-degree general hospital in October 2019, Xi’an, PR, China. A sample of 246 nurses participated in this cross-sectional study. Proactive personality was assessed with the Proactive Personality Questionnaire (PPS), job performance was assessed by Heilman three-item measurements, nurse competence was estimated with Nurse Competency Scale (NCS), and work engagement was assessed with the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The structural equation model was used to test the main hypotheses. Results: Structural equation model analysis revealed that work engagement partially mediated the association between proactive personality and job performance. The serial two-mediator model which was used to explore the association between proactive personality and job performance through competency and work engagement, in sequence, was demonstrated. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that work engagement partially mediated the association between nurses’ proactive personality and their job performance. The serial two-mediator model demonstrated that proactive personality was associated with job performance via competency and work engagement. This study also revealed the critical role of nursing managers in understanding the nurses’ proactive personality, which would facilitate them to enhance the latter’s competency and promote their work engagement. All these will in turn constantly improve the overall quality of nursing and advance professional development of nursing and benefits for patients.

    Abstract: Hyperuricemia is an independent risk factor for renal damage and promotes the progression of chronic kidney disease. In this study, we investigated the effect of I-BET151, a small-molecule inhibitor targeting the bromodomain and extraterminal (BET) proteins, on the development of hyperuricemic nephropathy (HN), and the mechanisms involved. Expression levels of bromodomain-containing protein 2 and 4, but not 3 were increased in the kidney of rats with HN; administration of I-BET151 effectively prevented renal dysfunction, decreased urine microalbumin, and attenuated renal fibrosis as indicated by reduced activation of renal interstitial fibroblasts and expression of fibronectin and collagen I in HN rats. Mechanistic studies show that I-BET151 treatment inhibited transition of renal epithelial cells to a mesenchymal cell type as evidenced by preservation of E-cadherin and reduction of vimentin expression. This was coincident with reduced expression of TGF-β1 and dephosphorylation of Smad3 and ERK1/2. I-BET151 was also effective in inhibiting phosphorylation of NF-κB, expression of multiple cytokines and chemokines, and infiltration of macrophages to the injured kidney. Although there were increased serum levels of uric acid and xanthine oxidase, an enzyme that catalyzes production of uric acid, and decreased expression of renal organic anion transporter 1 and 3 that promote urate excretion in the model of HN, and reduced expression levels of urine uric acid, I-BET151 treatment did not affect these responses. Collectively, our results indicate that I-BET151 alleviates HN by inhibiting epithelial to mesenchymal transition and inflammation in association with blockade of TGF-β, ERK1/2 and NF-κB signaling.

    Abstract: Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly spread worldwide. The harmful impact of COVID-19 is beyond just physical health concern. The unprecedented public health crisis has also taken its toll on the mental health of adolescents. The present study aims to estimate the prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempts and investigate the similarities and differences in the influential factors for suicidal ideation and attempts among left-behind children (LBC) and non-left-behind children (NLBC) in rural China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: A total of 761 rural Chinese students, of whom 468 were left behind, completed the cross-sectional questionnaires including demographic data, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire, seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, suicidal ideation, and suicidal attempts. Chi-square test, independent-sample t -test, and logistic regression were performed in the statistical analysis. Results: Overall, 36.4 and 10.4% of rural Chinese students reported suicidal ideation (37.8% for LBC vs. 34.1% for NLBC) and attempts (11.3% for LBC vs. 8.9% for NLBC) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among LBC, parental educational level (adjusted odds ratio, Adj. OR = 1.60), maladaptive strategies (Adj. OR = 1.04), anxious symptoms (Adj. OR = 2.61), and depressive symptoms (Adj. OR = 3.85) were significantly associated with suicidal ideation, while age (Adj. OR = 0.56), maladaptive strategies (Adj. OR = 1.08), symptoms of anxiety (Adj. OR = 3.85), and symptoms of depression (Adj. OR = 2.68) were significantly related to suicidal attempts during the COVID-19 outbreak. Among NLBC, gender (Adj. OR = 2.20), parental educational level (Adj. OR = 1.77), perceived family economic status (Adj. OR = 0.39), anxious symptoms (Adj. OR = 2.38), and depressive symptoms (Adj. OR = 2.77) were significantly associated with suicidal ideation, whereas only anxious symptom (Adj. OR = 5.85) was significantly related to suicidal attempts. Conclusion: Suicidal ideation and attempts are prevalent among students in rural China during the COVID-19 outbreak. Our findings also revealed the shared and unique factors for suicidal ideation and attempts among LBC and NLBC during the COVID-19 epidemic. With regard to the differences between LBC and NLBC, the use of maladaptive strategies and age might be vital factors for suicide prevention measures directed specifically toward LBC, whereas interventions sensitive to gender and perceived social economic status should be specifically designed for NLBC amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Abstract: A total of 60 WRKY family genes of ramie were identified in the ramie. The genes were unevenly distributed across 14 chromosomes in the specie and highly concentrated (72%) in the distal telomeric region. Phylogenetic analysis placed these genes into seven distinct subfamilies groups: I, II (a, b, c, d, e), and III, with group IIc containing only the variant of heptapetide sequence (WRKYGKK). Segmental duplication events (41.7%) was found to be the main driver of BnGWRKY evolution. Thirty eight from among the genes showed collinear relationships with WRKY genes from Arabidopsis thaliana , Cannabis sativa, Oryza sativa , and Zea mays . The number and density of stress and hormone responsives cis -acting elements were comparably higher than other elements, with abundant ARE and rare LTR cis -acting elements indicating the long-standing adaptability of ramie to its natural environment. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis of the WRKY target genes revealed their involvement in response to stimuli, immune system processes, transporter protein activity and antioxidant activity. Expression analysis show that most WRKYs were activated by the cadmium stress, more especially the BnGWRKY2 , BnGWRKY15 , BnGWRKY20, BnGWRKY50 and BnGWRKY58 . Combining transcriptome, orthologous gene relationships and qPCR result, we established the possible involvement of BnGWRKY50 and BnGWRKY58 in crosstalk mechanism between secondary cell wall thickening and Cd 2+ stress. This provided information into the role of BnGWRKY proteins in ramie secondary wall development and cadmium stress response to, and could serve as basis for improvement of the ramie.
