    Abstract: Calcium sulfate and calcium sulfate-based biomaterials have been widely used in non-load-bearing bone defects for hundreds of years due to their superior biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity. However, lower compressive strength and rapid degradation rate are the main limitations in clinical applications. Excessive absorption causes a sharp increase in sulfate ion and calcium ion concentrations around the bone defect site, resulting in delayed wound healing and hypercalcemia. In addition, the space between calcium sulfate and the host bone, resulting from excessively rapid absorption, has adverse effects on bone healing or fusion techniques. This issue has been recognized and addressed. The lack of sufficient mechanical strength makes it challenging to use calcium sulfate and calcium sulfate-based biomaterials in load-bearing areas. To overcome these defects, the introduction of various inorganic additives, such as calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and calcium silicate, into calcium sulfate is an effective measure. Inorganic materials with different physical and chemical properties can greatly improve the properties of calcium sulfate composites. For example, the hydrolysis products of calcium carbonate are alkaline substances that can buffer the acidic environment caused by the degradation of calcium sulfate; calcium phosphate has poor degradation, which can effectively avoid the excessive absorption of calcium sulfate; and calcium silicate can promote the compressive strength and stimulate new bone formation. The purpose of this review is to review the poor properties of calcium sulfate and its complications in clinical application and to explore the effect of various inorganic additives on the physicochemical properties and biological properties of calcium sulfate.

    Abstract: Background: Yiqi Huoxue Decoction (YQHXD) is a traditional Chinese medicine that promotes blood circulation, removes blood stasis, facilitates diuresis, and alleviates edema. It is composed of 10 herbal medicines and has extensive application in treating nephrotic syndrome (NS). However, the active components and the potential mechanism of YQHXD for treating NS remain unclear. Methods: We set up a sensitive and rapid method based on Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatograph-Mass (UPLC-MS) to identify the compounds in YQHXD and constituents absorbed into the blood. Disease genes were collected through GeneCards, DisGeNET, and OMIM database. Genes of compounds absorbed into blood were predicted by the TCMSP database. We constructed Disease-Drug-Ingredient-Gene (DDIG) network using Cytoscape, established a Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network using String, Gene biological process (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis was performed using DAVID. Cellular experiments were performed to validate the results of network pharmacology. Result: A total of 233 compounds in YQHXD and 50 constituents absorbed into the blood of rats were identified. The 36 core targets in the PPI network were clustered in the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase-RAC serine/threonine-protein kinase (PI3K-AKT) and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling pathways. Luteolin, Wogonin, Formononetin, and Calycosin were top-ranking components as potentially active compounds. Conclusion: The results of our studies show that YQHXD is able to enhance renal function, alleviate podocyte injury, and improve adriamycin nephrotic syndrome.

    Abstract: Species of Craterellus (Hydnaceae, Cantharellales) in China are investigated on the basis of morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences from nuc 28S rDNA D1-D2 domains (28S) and nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region. Five species are recognized in China, of which three of them are described as new, viz. C. fulviceps , C. minor , and C. parvopullus , while two of them are previously described taxa, viz. C. aureus , and C. lutescens . A key to the known Chinese taxa of the genus is also provided.

    Abstract: We aimed to identify imaging biomarkers to assess predictive capacity of radiomics nomogram regarding treatment response status (responder/non-responder) in patients with advanced NSCLC undergoing anti-PD1 immunotherapy. Methods 197 eligible patients with histologically confirmed NSCLC were retrospectively enrolled from nine hospitals. We carried out a radiomics characterization from target lesions (TL) approach and largest target lesion (LL) approach on baseline and first follow-up (TP1) CT imaging data. Delta-radiomics feature was calculated as the relative net change in radiomics feature between baseline and TP1. Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) logistic regression were applied for feature selection and radiomics signature construction. Results Radiomics signature at baseline did not show significant predictive value regarding response status for LL approach ( P = 0.10), nor in terms of TL approach ( P = 0.27). A combined Delta-radiomics nomogram incorporating Delta-radiomics signature with clinical factor of distant metastasis for target lesions had satisfactory performance in distinguishing responders from non-responders with AUCs of 0.83 (95% CI: 0.75–0.91) and 0.81 (95% CI: 0.68–0.95) in the training and test sets respectively, which was comparable with that from LL approach ( P = 0.92, P = 0.97). Among a subset of those patients with available pretreatment PD-L1 expression status (n = 66), models that incorporating Delta-radiomics features showed superior predictive accuracy than that of PD-L1 expression status alone ( P & lt; 0.001). Conclusion Early response assessment using combined Delta-radiomics nomograms have potential advantages to identify patients that were more likely to benefit from immunotherapy, and help oncologists modify treatments tailored individually to each patient under therapy.

    Abstract: Blastocystis is a protozoan that parasitizes the intestines. A number of hosts of Blastocystis have been found, including human and animals. However, there has been no research on the prevalence of Blastocystis in Tibetan antelope. Here, a molecular test was performed using 627 Tibetan antelope fecal samples collected on Tibet in China from 2019 to 2020. The result showed that 30 (4.8%) samples were Blastocystis positive. The highest prevalence of Blastocystis was in Shuanghu County (25/209, 12.0%), followed by Shenza County (2/103, 1.9%), Nyima County (3/182, 1.6%), and Baigoin County (0/133, 0.0%). In addition, logistic regression analysis showed that the gender, sampling year, and area of Tibetan antelope were risk factors for Blastocystis prevalence. Three subtypes (ST10, ST13, and ST14) of Blastocystis were found in Tibetan antelope through a subtype sequence analysis, and ST13 was identified to be the dominant subtype. This is the first investigation for the infection of Blastocystis in Tibetan antelope. Collectively, the data in this study have expanded the host range of Blastocystis and provided basic information for the distribution of Blastocystis subtypes, which could support the prevention of Blastocystis infection in wild animals.

    Abstract: Enterocytozoon ( E. ) bieneusi and Cryptosporidium spp. are the most important zoonotic enteric pathogens associated with diarrheal diseases in animals and humans. However, it is still not known whether E. bieneusi and Cryptosporidium spp. are carried by wild rodents in Shanxi, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Shandong, and Inner Mongolia, China. In the present study, a total of 536 feces samples were collected from Rattus (R.) norvegicus , Mus musculus , Spermophilus ( S. ) dauricus , and Lasiopodomys brandti in six provinces of China, and were detected by PCR amplification of the SSU rRNA gene of Cryptosporidium spp. and ITS gene of E. bieneusi from June 2017 to November 2020. Among 536 wild rodents, 62 (11.6%) and 18 (3.4%) samples were detected as E. bieneusi - and Cryptosporidium spp.-positive, respectively. Differential prevalence rates of E. bieneusi and Cryptosporidium spp. were found in different regions. E. bieneusi was more prevalent in R. norvegicus , whereas Cryptosporidium spp. was more frequently identified in S. dauricus . Sequence analysis indicated that three known Cryptosporidium species/genotypes ( Cryptosporidium viatorum , Cryptosporidium felis , and Cryptosporidium sp. rat genotype II/III) and two uncertain Cryptosporidium species ( Cryptosporidium sp. novel1 and Cryptosporidium sp. novel2) were present in the investigated wild rodents. Meanwhile, 5 known E. bieneusi genotypes (XJP-II, EbpC, EbpA, D, and NCF7) and 11 novel E. bieneusi genotypes (ZJR1 to ZJR7, GXM1, HLJC1, HLJC2, and SDR1) were also observed. This is the first report for existence of E. bieneusi and Cryptosporidium spp. in wild rodents in Shanxi, Guangxi, Zhejiang, and Shandong, China. The present study also demonstrated the existence of E. bieneusi and Cryptosporidium spp. in S. dauricus worldwide for the first time. This study not only provided the basic data for the distribution of E. bieneusi and Cryptosporidium genotypes/species, but also expanded the host range of the two parasites. Moreover, the zoonotic E. bieneusi and Cryptosporidium species/genotypes were identified in the present study, suggesting wild rodents are a potential source of human infections.

    Abstract: Based on non-contrast-enhanced (NCE)/contrast-enhanced (CE) computed tomography (CT) images, we try to identify a combined-radiomics model and evaluate its predictive capacity regarding response to anti-PD1 immunotherapy of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods 131 patients with NSCLC undergoing anti-PD1 immunotherapy were retrospectively enrolled from 7 institutions. Using largest lesion (LL) and target lesions (TL) approaches, we performed a radiomics analysis based on pretreatment NCE-CT (NCE-radiomics) and CE-CT images (CE-radiomics), respectively. Meanwhile, a combined-radiomics model based on NCE-CT and CE-CT images was constructed. Finally, we developed their corresponding nomograms incorporating clinical factors. ROC was used to evaluate models’ predictive performance in the training and testing set, and a DeLong test was employed to compare the differences between different models. Results For TL approach, both NCE-radiomics and CE-radiomics performed poorly in predicting response to immunotherapy. For LL approach, NCE-radiomics nomograms and CE-radiomics nomograms incorporating with clinical factor of distant metastasis all showed satisfactory results, reflected by the AUCs in the training (AUC=0.84, 95% CI: 0.75-0.92; AUC=0.77, 95% CI: 0.67-0.87) and test sets (AUC=0.78, 95% CI: 0.64-0.92, AUC=0.73, 95% CI: 0.57-0.88), respectively. Compared with the NCE-radiomics nomograms, the combined-radiomics nomogram showed incremental predictive capacity in the training set (AUC=0.85, 95% CI: 0.77-0.92) and test set (AUC=0.81, 95% CI: 0.67-0.94), respectively, but no statistical difference ( P =0.86, P =0.79). Conclusion Compared with radiomics based on single NCE or CE-CT images, the combined-radiomics model has potential advantages to identify patients with NSCLC most likely to benefit from immunotherapy, and may effectively improve more precise and individualized decision support.
