    Abstract: Numerous studies have shown that plant shading can promote the quality of green tea. However, the association of shading with metabolic regulation in tea leaves and roots remains unelucidated. Here, the metabolic profiling of two tea cultivars (“Xiangfeicui” and “Jinxuan”) in response to shading and relighting periods during the summer season was performed using non-targeted metabolomics methods. The metabolic pathway analyses revealed that long-term shading remarkably inhibit the sugar metabolism such as glycolysis, galactose metabolism, and pentose phosphate pathway in the leaves and roots of “Xiangfeicui,” and “Jinxuan” were more sensitive to light recovery changes. The lipid metabolism in the leaves and roots of “Xiangfeicui” was promoted by short-term shading, while it was inhibited by long-term shading. In addition, the intensity of the flavonoid metabolites in the leaves and roots of “Jinxuan” were upregulated with a trend of rising first and then decreasing under shading, and five flavonoid synthesis genes showed the same trend (F3H, F3′5′H, DFR, ANS, and ANR). Simultaneously, the amino acids of the nitrogen metabolism in the leaves and roots of the two cultivars were significantly promoted by long-term shading, while the purine and caffeine metabolism was inhibited in the leaves of “Xiangfeicui.” Interestingly, CsGS1.1 and CsTSI, amino acid synthase genes was upregulated in the leaves and roots of two cultivars. These results indicated that shading could participate in carbon and nitrogen metabolic regulation of both leaf and root, and root metabolism could have a positive association with leaf metabolism to promote the shaded tea quality.

    Abstract: In recent years, the morbidity and mortality of gastrointestinal cancer have remained high in China. Due to the deep location of the gastrointestinal organs, such as gastric cancer, the early symptoms of cancer are not obvious. It is generally discovered at an advanced stage with distant metastasis and lymph node infiltration, making it difficult to cure. Therefore, there is a significant need for novel technologies that can effectively diagnose and treat gastrointestinal cancer, ultimately reducing its mortality. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs), a type of nanocarrier with unique optical properties and remarkable biocompatibility, have the potential to influence the fate of cancer by delivering drugs, nucleic acids to cancer cells and tissues. As a safe and reliable visualization agent, GNPs can track drugs and accurately indicate the location and boundaries of cancer, opening up new possibilities for cancer treatment. In addition, GNPs have been used in photodynamic therapy to deliver photosensitizers, as well as in combination with photothermal therapy. Therefore, GNPs can be used as a safe and effective nanomaterial in the treatment and diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer.

    Abstract: Chinese emergency department (ED) staff encountered significant mental stress while fighting the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We sought to investigate the prevalence and associated factors for depressive symptoms among ED staff (including physicians, nurses, allied health, and auxiliary ED staff). A cross-sectional national survey of ED staff who were on duty and participated in combating the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted March 1–15, 2020. A total of 6,588 emergency medical personnel from 1,060 hospitals responded to this survey. A majority of respondents scored above 10 points on the PHQ-9 standardized test, which is associated with depressive symptoms. Those aged 31–45, those working in the COVID-19 isolation unit, and those with relatives ≤ 16 or ≥70 years old at home all had statistically significant associations with scoring & gt;10 points. Depressive symptoms among Chinese emergency medical staff were likely quite common during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and reinforce the importance of targeted ED staff support during future outbreaks.

    Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between diabetes status and the risk of breast cancer among adult Americans, exploring the impact of BMI, age, and race on this relationship. Methods A cross-sectional analysis of 8,249 individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was conducted. Diabetes was categorized as type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, with both conditions diagnosed according to the ADA 2014 guidelines. The association between diabetes status and breast cancer risk was explored using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results Patients with diabetes had higher odds of breast cancer (OR: 1.51; 95% CI 1.00 to 2.28), Using the two-piecewise linear regression model, it was observed that there is a threshold effect in the risk of breast cancer occurrence at the age of 52 years. Specifically, the risk of breast cancer is relatively low before the age of 52 but increases significantly after this age. Conclusions This study identified a significant association between diabetes status and breast cancer risk among adult Americans. We also found a threshold effect in breast cancer occurrence at the age of 52. Age was significantly associated with breast cancer risk in both Non-Hispanic White and Non-Hispanic Black individuals. These findings underscore the importance of diabetes management, maintaining a healthy BMI, and age-related risk considerations in reducing breast cancer risk.

    Abstract: One of the most active intraplate volcanoes in East Asia, Changbaishan volcano experienced unrest from July 2002 to July 2005. On 2002/06/28, the M 7.2 Wangqing deep-focus earthquake occurred ∼290 km northeast of Changbaishan volcano. While some studies have suggested a possible triggering relationship, the physical mechanism of such distant interaction is still not well understood. Using a template matching technique, which cross-correlates waveform of known events with continuous data, we perform systematic detection of microseismic events recorded by station CBS near Changbaishan volcano from July 1999 to July 2007. The detected earthquakes can be further categorized into three different types: volcano-tectonic (VT) events, long-period (LP) events and harmonic-spectra (HS) events. We detect 3763 VT events between July 2002 and July 2007. The intense VT earthquake swarm during the period from July 2002 to July 2005, along with recurring LPs and HSs and other geodetic/geochemical evidence, suggest magma movement during unrest. Compared with the hand-picked catalogue, the catalogue obtained by template matching technique reveals a delayed-triggering relationship between Wangqing deep-focus earthquake and unrest. The small magnitudes of the VT events and the limited numbers of LP and HS events suggest that the Wangqing mainshock likely triggered bubble excitation in the mid-crust magma system, resulting in overpressure and a small magma injection into the shallow magma chamber at a depth of ∼5 km, leading to the 3-years unrest.

    Abstract: Peach branches is a by-product of peach industry. Making peach branch waste into peach branch organic fertilizer (PBOF) is a promising strategy of ecological utilization. In this study, the effects of PBOF on the yield and quality of peach fruit, chemical properties of bulk soil, and soil bacterial communities were investigated in a peach orchard. The results showed that the yield and sugar/acid ratio of two high-level PBOF treatments (SDH.4 and SKR.4) was higher than no fertilization treatment (CK), but there was no significant difference compared to the commercial organic fertilizer treatment (SYT.4). Moreover, the three fertilizer treatments increased soil nutrients such as soil organic matter (SOM) and available potassium (AK), compared to CK. Furthermore, PBOF increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, and enhanced the soil bacterial co-occurrence pattern and the potential function of bacterial communities to degrade exogenous compounds. In addition, thanks to the local policy of encouraging the use of PBOF, the use cost of PBOF is lower than commercial organic fertilizer, which is conducive to the development of ecological agriculture.

    Abstract: Although there have been remarkable advances in cartilage tissue engineering, construction of irregularly shaped cartilage, including auricular, nasal, tracheal, and meniscus cartilages, remains challenging because of the difficulty in reproducing its precise structure and specific function. Among the advanced fabrication methods, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology offers great potential for achieving shape imitation and bionic performance in cartilage tissue engineering. This review discusses requirements for 3D printing of various irregularly shaped cartilage tissues, as well as selection of appropriate printing materials and seed cells. Current advances in 3D printing of irregularly shaped cartilage are also highlighted. Finally, developments in various types of cartilage tissue are described. This review is intended to provide guidance for future research in tissue engineering of irregularly shaped cartilage.

    Abstract: El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events influence elements of the terrestrial water cycle such as precipitation and temperature, which in turn have a significant impact on drought. This work assessed the impact of El Niño and La Niña on droughts from 1970 to 2020 in the Weihe River basin (WRB) in China. This study used a standardized precipitation index (SPI) to characterize meteorological drought. The regional drought response to extreme events in El Niño/La Niña was analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA), Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests, and other methods. The results showed that, based on PCA, the WRB is divided into two regions, with the northwest region (67%) comprising more area than the southeast region (33%). El Niño/La Niña significantly impacted drought in the WRB. Droughts mainly occurred in the El Niño year and the year following La Niña. El Niño had the highest number of drought years (44%), followed by the year following La Niña (43%). The number of droughts was lowest in the year following El Niño (22%). At 1-, 3-, and 6-month timescales, significant droughts mainly occurred from July to December in El Niño years and the summer following La Niña. On a 12-month timescale, significant droughts mainly occurred from January to April in El Niño years, while no droughts occurred in La Niña years. The longer the timescale of the SPI, the more months of significant drought in El Niño years; however, the intensity of drought in the basin was reduced. In the year following La Niña, summer droughts intensified on a 6-month timescale compared to a 3-month timescale. El Niño and La Niña had greater impacts on the drought index in the northwest region of the WRB. In the northwest region, 60% of the months showed significant drought, compared to only 2% of the months in the southeast region. The drought intensity was higher in the northwest region. The results of this study provide a reference for drought management and early warning systems in the WRB and support solutions to water shortage.
