    Abstract: The long-term impact of COVID-19 on patient health has been a recent focus. This study aims to determine the persistent symptoms and psychological conditions of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 15 months after onset, that patients first developed symptoms. The potential risk factors were also explored. Methods A cohort of COVID-19 patients discharged from February 20, 2020 to March 31, 2020 was recruited. Follow-ups were conducted using validated questionnaires and psychological screening scales at 15 months after onset to evaluate the patients' health status. The risk factors for long-term health impacts and their associations with disease severity was analyzed. Findings 534 COVID-19 patients were enrolled. The median age of the patients was 62.0 years old (IQR 52.0–70.0) and 295 were female (55.2%). The median time from onset to follow-up was 460.0 (451.0–467.0) days. Sleep disturbance (18.5%, 99/534) and fatigue (17.2%, 92/534) were the most common persistent symptoms. 6.4% (34/534) of the patients had depression, 9.2% (49/534) were anxious, 13.0% (70/534) had insomnia and 4.7% (25/534) suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Multivariate adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that glucocorticoid use during hospitalization (OR 3.58, 95% CI 1.12–11.44) was significantly associated with an increased risk of fatigue. The OR values for anxiety and sleep disorders were 2.36 (95% CI 1.07–5.20) and 2.16 (95% CI 1.13–4.14) in females to males. The OR value of PTSD was 25.6 (95% CI 3.3–198.4) in patients with persistent symptoms to those without persistent symptoms. No significant associations were observed between fatigue syndrome or adverse mental outcomes and disease severity. Conclusions 15-month follow-up in this study demonstrated the need of extended rehabilitation intervention for complete recovery in COVID-19 patients.

    Abstract: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) often leads to amputation. Early intervention to prevent DFU is urgently necessary. So far, there have been no studies on predictive models associated with DFU risk factors. Our study aimed to quantify the predictive risk value of DFU, promote health education, and further develop behavioral interventions to reduce the incidence of DFU. Methods Data from 973 consecutive patients with T2D was collected from two hospitals. Patients from the Guangxi Medical University First Affiliated Hospital formed the training cohort (n = 853), and those from the Wuming Hospital of Guangxi Medical University formed the validation cohort (n = 120). Independent variable grouping analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to determine the risk factors of DFUs. The prediction model was established according to the related risk factors. In addition, the accuracy of the model was evaluated by specificity, sensitivity, predictive value, and predictive likelihood ratio. Results In total, 369 of the 853 patients (43.3%) and 60 of the 120 (50.0%) were diagnosed with DFUs in the two hospitals. The factors associated with DFU were old age, male gender, lower body mass index (BMI), longer duration of diabetes, history of foot disease, cardiac insufficiency, no use of oral hypoglycemic agent (OHA), high white blood cell count, high platelet count, low hemoglobin level, low lymphocyte absolute value, and high postprandial blood glucose. After incorporating these 12 factors, the nomogram drawn achieved good concordance indexes of 0.89 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.87 to 0.91] in the training cohort and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.77 to 0.91) in the validation cohort in predicting DFUs and had well-fitted calibration curves. Patients who had a nomogram score of ≥180 were considered to have a low risk of DFU, whereas those having ≥180 were at high risk. Conclusions A nomogram was constructed by combining 12 identified risk factors of DFU. These 12 risk factors are easily available in hospitalized patients, so the prediction of DFU in hospitalized patients with T2D has potential clinical significance. The model provides a reliable prediction of the risk of DFU in patients with T2D.

    Abstract: 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), serving as a versatile platform compound bridging biomass resource and the fine chemicals industry, holds significant importance in biomass conversion processes. The electrooxidation of HMF plays a crucial role in yielding the valuable product (2,5-furandicarboxylic acid), which finds important applications in antimicrobial agents, pharmaceutical intermediates, polyester synthesis, and so on. Defect engineering stands as one of the most effective strategies for precisely synthesizing electrocatalytic materials, which could tune the electronic structure and coordination environment, and further altering the adsorption energy of HMF intermediate species, consequently increasing the kinetics of HMF electrooxidation. Thereinto, the most routine and effective defect are the anionic vacancies and cationic vacancies. In this concise review, the catalytic reaction mechanism for selective HMF oxidation is first elucidated, with a focus on the synthesis strategies involving both anionic and cationic vacancies. Recent advancements in various catalytic oxidation systems for HMF are summarized and synthesized from this perspective. Finally, the future research prospects for selective HMF oxidation are discussed.

    Abstract: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a marine pathogen thought to be the leading cause of seafood-borne gastroenteritis globally, urgently requiring efficient management methods. V. parahaemolyticus encodes 12 resistance/nodulation/division (RND) efflux systems. However, research on these systems is still in its infancy. In this study, we discovered that the inactivation of VmeL, a membrane fusion protein within the RND efflux systems, led to reduction of the ability of biofilm formation. Further results displayed that the decreased capacity of Congo red binding and the colony of Δ vmeL is more translucent compared with wild type strains, suggested reduced biofilm formation due to decreased production of biofilm exopolysaccharide upon vmeL deletion. In addition, the deletion of vmeL abolished surface swarming and swimming motility of V. parahaemolyticus . Additionally, deletion of vmeL weakened the cytotoxicity of V. parahaemolyticus towards HeLa cells, and impaired its virulence in a murine intraperitoneal infection assay. Finally, through RNA-sequencing, we ascertained that there were 716 upregulated genes and 247 downregulated genes in Δ vmeL strain. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that quorum sensing, bacterial secretion systems, ATP-binding cassette transporters, and various amino acid metabolism pathways were altered due to the inactivation of vmeL . qRT-PCR further confirmed that genes accountable to the type III secretion system (T3SS1) and lateral flagella were negatively affected by vmeL deletion. Taken together, our results suggest that VmeL plays an important role in pathogenicity, making it a good target for managing infection with V. parahaemolyticus.

    Abstract: Traditionally, clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma (ccpRCC) was considered to share similar molecular and histological characteristics with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC). Here we aimed to identify somatic and germline variants of ccpRCC. For this purpose, we conducted whole-exome sequencing to detect somatic variants in the tissues of 18 patients with pathologically confirmed ccpRCC, who underwent surgical treatment at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. Targeted sequencing was conducted to detect germline variants in paired tumor or normal tissues or blood. Somatic and germline variants of ccRCC and Renal cell carcinoma included in The Cancer Genome Atlas data and other published data were analyzed as well. The molecular profiles of ccpRCC, ccRCC and pRCC were compared. Among the 387 somatic variants identified, TCEB1 (3/18) and VHL (3/18) variants occurred at the highest frequencies. Germline mutation detection showed that nine variants associated with Fanconi anemia (VAFAs) pathway ( FANCA , 6/18; FANCI , 3/18) were identified in 18 ccpRCC patients. Among ccpRCC patients with VAFAs, five out of eight patients had second primary malignancy or family history of cancer. Somatic variants characteristics may distinguish ccpRCC from ccRCC or pRCC and germline VAFAs may be a molecular characterization of ccpRCC. Compared with ccRCC or pRCC, ccpRCC patients may be significantly correlated with higher risk of developing second primary malignancy.

    Abstract: The differences in short- and long-term outcome between laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) and open liver resection (OLR) for BCLC stage A large hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in difficult segments (I, IVa, VII, VIII) remain unclear. This PSM two-centre study aimed to compare perioperative and long-term survival outcomes of LLR with OLR for this HCC. Methods HCC patients with BCLC stage A who underwent OLR or LLR in two medical centres were enrolled in the study. PSM analysis was performed to match patients between the LLR cohort and OLR cohort. Survival was analysed based on the Kaplan–Meier method. Independent risk factors were identified by Cox regression. Results After PSM, 35 patients remained in the LLR cohort, and 84 remained in the OLR cohort. Patients in the LLR cohort had more intraoperative blood loss (p=0.036) and shorter hospital stays after surgery (p & lt;0.001). The LLR cohort and OLR cohort had no difference in intraoperative blood transfusion, surgical margin or postoperative short-term outcomes. The OS and RFS were not significantly different between the two cohorts. The OS and RFS of these two cohorts were not different in the subgroup analysis. Surgical margin was identified as an independent risk factor for tumour recurrence. Conclusion For BCLC stage A large HCC patients with lesions in difficult segments, LLR was feasible and had shorter hospital stay than OLR. In addition, a surgical margin ≥1 cm could significantly decrease the recurrence probability for large HCC located in different segments without compromising short-term outcomes.

    Abstract: To determine the effect of acupuncture in treating poor ovarian response (POR). Methods We searched MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, CNKI, CBM, VIP database, Wanfang Database, and relevant registration databases from inception to January 30, 2023. In this review, both Chinese and English peer-reviewed literature were included. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using acupuncture as an intervention for POR patients undergoing in vitro fertilization were considered. Results Seven clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were eventually included for comparison (516 women). The quality of included studies was generally low or very low. For the meta-analysis, seven studies showed that compared with controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) therapy, acupuncture combined with COH therapy could significantly increase the implantation rate (RR=2.13, 95%CI [1.08, 4.21], p =0.03), the number of oocytes retrieved (MD=1.02, 95%CI [0.72, 1.32], p & lt;0.00001), the thickness of endometrium (MD=0.54, 95%CI [0.13, 0.96], p =0.01), and the antral follicle count (MD=1.52, 95%CI [1.08, 1.95], p & lt;0.00001), reduce follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels (MD=-1.52, 95%CI [-2.41, -0.62], p =0.0009) and improve estradiol (E 2 ) levels (MD=1667.80, 95%CI [1578.29, 1757.31], p & lt;0.00001). Besides, there were significant differences in the duration of Gn (MD=0.47, 95%CI [-0.00, 0.94], p =0.05) between the two groups. However, no statistical variation was observed in improving clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), fertilization rate, high-quality embryo rate, luteinizing hormone (LH) value, anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) value, or reducing the dose of gonadotropin (Gn) values between the acupuncture plus COH therapy group and the COH therapy group. Conclusion Acupuncture combined with COH therapy is doubtful in improving the pregnancy outcome of POR patients. Secondly, acupuncture can also improve the sex hormone level of POR women, and improve ovarian function. Furthermore, more RCTs of acupuncture in POR are needed to be incorporated into future meta-analyses. Systematic review registration PROSPERO, identifier CRD42020169560.

    Abstract: The host genes play a crucial role in shaping the composition and structure of the gut microbiome. Red deer is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and its pilose antlers have good medicinal value. Hybridization can lead to heterosis, resulting in increased pilose antler production and growth performance in hybrid deer. However, the role of the gut microbiome in hybrid deer remains largely unknown. In this study, alpha and beta diversity analysis showed that hybridization altered the composition and structure of the gut microbiome of the offspring, with the composition and structure of the hybrid offspring being more similar to those of the paternal parents. Interestingly, the LefSe differential analysis showed that there were some significantly enriched gut microbiome in the paternal parents (such as g_Prevotellaceae UCG-003 , f_Bacteroidales RF16 group; Ambiguous_taxa , etc.) and the maternal parents (including g_Alistipes , g_Anaerosporobacter , etc.), which remained significantly enriched in the hybrid offspring. Additionally, the hybrid offspring exhibited a significant advantage over the parental strains, particularly in taxa that can produce short-chain fatty acids, such as g_Prevotellaceae UCG-003 , g_Roseburia, g_Succinivibrio , and g_Lachnospiraceae UCG-006 . Similar to bacterial transmission, metagenomic analysis showed that some signaling pathways related to pilose antler growth (“Wnt signaling pathway,” “PI3K Akt signaling pathway,” “MAPK signaling pathway”) were also enriched in hybrid red deer after hybridization. Furthermore, metabolomic analysis revealed that compared with the paternal and maternal parents, the hybrid offspring exhibited significant enrichment in metabolites related to “Steroid hormone biosynthesis,” “Tryptophan metabolism,” “Valine, leucine and isoleucine metabolism,” and “Vitamin B metabolism.” Notably, the metagenomic analysis also showed that these metabolic pathways were significantly enriched in hybrid deer. Finally, a correlation analysis between the gut microbiome and metabolites revealed a significant positive correlation between the enriched taxa in hybrid deer, including the Bacteroidales RF16 group , Prevotellaceae , and Succinivibrio , and metabolites, such as 7α-hydroxytestosterone, L-kynurenine, indole, L-isoleucine, and riboflavin. The study contributes valuable data toward understanding the role of the gut microbiome from red deer in hybridization and provides reference data for further screening potential probiotics and performing microbial-assisted breeding that promotes the growth of red deer pilose antlers and bodies, development, and immunity.
