    Abstract: Menopause contributes to renal dysfunction in women, which is generally attributed to estrogen withdrawal. In addition to decreased estrogen level, serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level increases after menopause. This study investigated the association between high circulating FSH level and renal function in post-menopausal women. Methods This observational cross-sectional study included 624 pre-menopausal, 121 peri-menopausal, and 2540 post-menopausal women. The levels of female sex hormones were examined by chemiluminescence and indices of renal function were measured using a clinical chemistry analyzer. The post-menopausal women were grouped into quartiles according to serum FSH levels. Results Renal function progressively declined from pre-menopause to peri-menopause to post-menopause, which was accompanied by increasing serum FSH level. In post-menopausal women, serum creatinine level increased with increasing FSH quartile, which was accompanied by a decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (p for trend & lt;0.001); moreover, the prevalence of declined eGFR ( & lt;90 ml/min/1.73 m 2 ) and chronic kidney disease (CKD; eGFR & lt;60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 ) increased (p for trend & lt;0.001). Even after adjusting for confounders, the odds ratios (ORs) of declined eGFR and CKD increased with increasing FSH quartiles in post-menopausal women. The ORs of declined eGFR (OR=2.19, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.63–2.92) and CKD (OR=10.09, 95% CI: 2.28–44.65) in the highest FSH quartile were approximately 2- and 10-fold higher, respectively, than in the lowest FSH quartile (p & lt;0.05). After stratifying post-menopausal women by median age (61 years), the OR for declined eGFR for each FSH quartile in the older group was higher than that for the corresponding FSH quartile in the younger group. Conclusions A high circulating FSH level is an independent risk factor for renal dysfunction in women after menopause. Additionally, aging may aggravate the association of high FSH levels with reduced renal function in post-menopausal women.

    Abstract: Electron beam selective melting (EBSM) has emerged as a promising technology for additive manufacturing (AM) of superalloys. In this study, a comprehensive multi-physics model is developed to analyze the molten pool flow behavior and influencing factors in the EBSM process. The discrete element method (DEM) and volume of fluid (VOF) method are employed to establish the powder bed model and track the solid-liquid free surface, respectively. The results reveal that the molten pool exhibits a conduction mode characterized by a large width-to-depth ratio driven by the Marangoni effect. Internal vortices cause the molten pool to expand even after the scan ends. The ambient pressure, in comparison to the preheat temperature, has a significant impact on vapor recoil and consequently affects the surface quality of the molten pool. Moreover, a large hatch distance results in cracks and porous morphological features on the surface of the samples. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of numerical simulations in providing detailed insights into the EBSM process of the IN738 superalloy material.

    Abstract: With China’s rapid industrialization and urbanization, China has been increasing its carbon productivity annually. Understanding the association between carbon productivity, socioeconomics, and medical resources with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) may help reduce CVDs burden. However, relevant studies are limited. Objectives The study aimed to describe the temporal and spatial distribution pattern of CVDs hospitalization in southeast rural China and to explore its influencing factors. Methods In this study, 1,925,129 hospitalization records of rural residents in southeast China with CVDs were analyzed from the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS). The spatial distribution patterns were explored using Global Moran’s I and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA). The relationships with influencing factors were detected using both a geographically and temporally weighted regression model (GTWR) and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR). Results In southeast China, rural inpatients with CVDs increased by 95.29% from 2010 to 2016. The main groups affected were elderly and women, with essential hypertension (26.06%), cerebral infarction (17.97%), and chronic ischemic heart disease (13.81%) being the leading CVD subtypes. The results of LISA shows that central and midwestern counties, including Meilie, Sanyuan, Mingxi, Jiangle, and Shaxian, showed a high-high cluster pattern of CVDs hospitalization rates. Negative associations were observed between CVDs hospitalization rates and carbon productivity, and positive associations with per capita GDP and hospital beds in most counties ( p   & lt; 0.05). The association between CVDs hospitalization rates and carbon productivity and per capita GDP was stronger in central and midwestern counties, while the relationship with hospital bed resources was stronger in northern counties. Conclusion Rural hospitalizations for CVDs have increased dramatically, with spatial heterogeneity observed in hospitalization rates. Negative associations were found with carbon productivity, and positive associations with socioeconomic status and medical resources. Based on our findings, we recommend low-carbon development, use of carbon productivity as an environmental health metric, and rational allocation of medical resources in rural China.

    Abstract: Three-dimensional (3D) printing concept has been successfully employed in regenerative medicine to achieve individualized therapy due to its benefit of a rapid, accurate, and predictable production process. Traditional biocomposites scaffolds (SCF) are primarily utilised for bone tissue engineering; nevertheless, over the last few years, there has already been a dramatic shift in the applications of bioceramic (BCR) SCF. As a direct consequence, this study focused on the structural, degeneration, permeation, and physiological activity of 3D-printed BCR (3DP-B) SCF with various conformations and work systems (macros, micros, and nanos ranges), as well as their impacts on the mechanical, degeneration, porosity, and physiological activities. In addition, 3DP-B SCF are highlighted in this study for potential uses applied from bone tissue engineering (BTE) to bone tumor treatment. The study focused on significant advances in practical 3DP-B SCF that can be utilized for tumor treatment as well as bone tissue regeneration (BTR). Given the difficulties in treating bone tumors, these operational BCR SCF offer a lot of promise in mending bone defects caused by surgery and killing any remaining tumor cells to accomplish bone tumor treatment. Furthermore, a quick assessment of future developments in this subject was presented. The study not only summarizes recent advances in BCR engineering, but it also proposes a new therapeutic strategy focused on the extension of conventional ceramics’ multifunction to a particular diagnosis.

    Abstract: Some studies have demonstrated a bidirectional association between obesity and depression, whereas others have not. This discordance might be due to the metabolic health status. We aimed to determine whether the relationship between obesity and depression is dependent on metabolic health status. Methods In total, 9,022,089 participants were enrolled and classified as one of four obesity phenotypes: metabolically healthy nonobesity (MHNO), metabolically unhealthy nonobesity (MUNO), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). We then divided the population into eight phenotypes based on obesity and the number of metabolic risk factors. Furthermore, the associations of eight phenotypes, based on obesity and specific metabolic risk factors, with depression were assessed. Result Among all participants, a higher risk of depression was observed for MUNO, MHO and MUO than for MHNO. The risk was highest for MUO (OR = 1.442; 95% CI = 1.432, 1.451). However, the association between MHO and depression was different for men and women (OR = 0.941, men; OR = 1.132, women). The risk of depression increased as the number of metabolic risk factors increased. Dyslipidemia was the strongest metabolic risk factor. These relationships were consistent among patients ≥ 45 years of age. Conclusions The increased risk of obesity-related depression appears to partly depend on metabolic health status. The results highlight the importance of a favorable metabolic status, and even nonobese populations should be screened for metabolic disorders.

    Abstract: Exogenous genes of transgenic crops are usually transferred to their wild-type relatives through pollen-mediated gene flow, which may change the ecological fitness and ability to invade wild populations, resulting in the weeding of wild plants and other unpredictable environmental impacts. In this study, the F 1 generation of herbicide-resistant soybeans and wild soybeans was obtained by artificial pollination, F 2 generation seeds were obtained by self-crossing, and the fitness of the parents and their F 1 and F 2 generations were tested. The foreign protein EPSPS was expressed normally in the hybrid between transgenic and wild soybeans; however, the protein expression was significantly lower than that in transgenic soybeans. The fitness of the F 1 hybrid between transgenic and wild soybeans was significantly lower than that of its parent. Compared with those of the wild soybeans, the F 2 generation soybeans improved in some fitness indices, while the emergence rate, pollen germination rate, and number of full seeds per pod, pods per plant, and full seeds per plant did not significantly differ. The aboveground biomass and 100-seed weight of the F 2 generation were higher than those of wild soybeans. Fitness among the F 2 -negative plants, homozygous, and heterozygous positive plants did not significantly vary. Improved fitness and presence of foreign genes in the F 2 soybean were not significantly correlated. As the F 2 generation of transgenic and wild soybeans had no fitness cost and the flowering stage were overlapped, the foreign gene might still spread in the wild soybean population.

    Abstract: Pancreatic cancer is one of the major reasons of cancer-associated deaths due to poor diagnosis, high metastasis and drug resistance. Therefore, it is important to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pancreatic cancer to identify new targets for the treatment. TIPE2 is an essential regulator of tumor apoptosis, inflammation and immune homeostasis. However, the role of TIPE2 is still not fully understood in pancreatic cancer. In this study, we found the expression of TIPE2 was decreased in pancreatic cancer tissues compare to paracancerous tissues, which was negatively correlated with tumor size in patients. Overexpression of TIPE2 significantly decreased cell proliferation, metastasis and increased apoptotic events in pancreatic cancer cell lines. Moreover, the results obtained from real time PCR and western blot revealed that TIPE2 was also involved in inhibiting MMPs and N-Cadherin expression while increasing Bax expression in pancreatic cancer cells. Similarly, TIPE2 could inhibit tumor growth in vivo , decrease the expression of Ki-67 and N-Cadherin, and increase the expression of Bax by IHC analysis in tumor tissues isolated from tumor-bearing mice. Mechanistic studies exhibited that TIPE2 might suppress pancreatic cancer development through inhibiting PI3K/AKT and Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathways triggered by TGFβ1. Moreover, the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes from tumor-bearing mice were analyzed by flow cytometry, and showed that TIPE2 could promote T cell activation to exert an anti-tumor effect possibly through activation of DCs in a TGFβ1 dependent manner. In general, we described the multiple regulatory mechanisms of TIPE2 in pancreatic tumorigenesis and tumor microenvironment, which suggested TIPE2 may act as a potential therapeutic target in pancreatic cancer.

    Abstract: Understanding the water use efficiency (WUE) of rubber plantations to seasonal fluctuations is critical for understanding the water, energy, and carbon cycle in tropical regions. In this study, we examine the exchange of water and heat fluxes between land and atmosphere in rubber plantation ecosystems during monsoon and drought seasons, employing data collected from eddy covariance towers. Further attribution analysis demonstrates that drought-induced alterations in the water use efficiency are predominantly governed by changes in surface resistance (positive contribution). The contributions of incoming shortwave radiation are virtually counteracted by air temperature and longwave radiation. It is noteworthy that the light use efficiency presents the most conspicuous negative contribution; however, this effect is predominantly counterbalanced by vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and aerodynamic resistance. The elevated water use efficiency (WUE) observed in rubber plantation ecosystems during the drought season raises concerns regarding the potential implications of anthropogenic forests on food and water security in tropical regions.
