Abstract: The aim of this study is to explore the epidemiological characteristics of peripheral T-cell lymphoma in Beijing. Methods  All data were extracted from the Beijing Cancer Registry database from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2018. Segi’s World Standard Population was used to estimate the age-standardized rate (ASR). Changes in trends were examined using joinpoint regression analysis. The observed survival was estimated by the Kaplan–Meier method. Relative survival was calculated using Ederer II and standardized using the Brenner method and International Cancer Survival Standard (ICSS) group 1 age structure. Stratified by gender, area, and histological type, incidence, mortality, and age of onset trends were observed in Beijing. Results  In Beijing, there were 801 new cases and 463 deaths of T-cell lymphoma from 2007 to 2018. Peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) was the most prevalent subtype (37.45%), followed by angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL; 20.35%), NK/T-cell lymphoma (NK/TCL; 17.60%), and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL; 10.24%). The crude incidence and mortality rates were 0.52 and 0.30 per 100,000 person-years, respectively, whereas the age-standardized incidence and mortality rates (ASIR and ASMR) were 0.35 and 0.18 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. Both ASIR and ASMR were more prevalent in men (0.48 and 0.24 per 100,000) and urban area (0.38 and 0.19 per 100,000) than in women (0.22 and 0.11 per 100,000) and rural area (0.30 and 0.15 per 100,000). The average annual percentage change (AAPC) of ASIR and ASMR was 5.72% (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.79%–9.81%) and 4.35% (95% CI: −0.09%–8.99%), respectively. The age-specific incidence rate increased with age and peaked at the age groups of 10–14 and 80–84. The mean and median age of onset increased between 2007 and 2018. In addition, it decreased after the age of onset was age standardization ( β = −0.41 , P = 0.26 ). The 5-year age-standardized relative survival was 39.02% for all patients, 58.14% for NK/TCL, 57.60% for ALCL, 31.38% for AITL, and 29.18% for PTCL-NOS. Conclusions  T-cell lymphoma incidence was rising, but survival was dismal in Beijing, indicating the need for improved early diagnosis and standardized treatment.

Abstract: To assess the efficacy of treatment outcomes of salvage surgery for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (rNPC). Methods We conducted a detailed search of the literatures in biomedical databases published from January 1990 to December 2020. The main research features and results of interest were retrieved from the articles that met the selection criteria for meta-analysis. Results A total of 21 articles with 778 patients were included, 17 of which met the meta-analysis inclusion criteria. The pooled 2-year overall survival (OS), 5-year OS, and 2-year disease-free survival (DFS) were 71%, 50% and 61%, respectively. Subgroup analysis was conducted with postoperative adjuvant therapy. The pooled 2-year OS, 5-year OS and 2-year DFS of the postoperative adjuvant therapy group compared with the surgery alone group were 69% vs 72%, 44% vs 56%, and 77% vs 54%, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on 178 patients with detailed individual postoperative survival data in 10 articles. On multivariate analysis, recurrent T (RT) stage and adjuvant therapy were independent predictors of outcomes. Conclusions This meta-analysis indicated that recurrent NPC patients can obtain survival benefits from salvage surgery. Accurately assessing the RT stage of the tumor and choosing the appropriate surgical method are important to the success of the surgery. Although the prognostic factors influencing outcome have been studied, conclusive data on the survival benefits are still lacking. Random controlled trials (RCTs) to compare surgery alone and postoperative adjuvant therapy are needed in patients with positive margin status after salvage surgery.

Abstract: Understanding intra-seasonal variation in extreme cold events (ECEs) has important implications for climate prediction and climate adaptation. However, the ECEs difference between early (from December 1 to January 15) and late (from January 16 to February 28) winters is a lack of sufficient understanding. Herein, we investigated the trends of ECEs over eastern China in early and late winters. Results showed that the number of days with ECEs had a faster and uniformly decreasing trend in late winter over eastern China, whereas the decreasing trend in early winter was not significant because of the dipole pattern with an increase of ECEs in northeast China and a decrease of ECEs in southeast China during the time period 1980–2021. This denoted that China was presenting a pattern of “cold early winter–warm late winter”. The feature of cold early winter was related to a significant increase in high-latitude blocking highs extending poleward and reaching the Arctic Circle in early winter during the last 20 years. In particular, there was a large-scale tilted high ridge from the Ural Mountains to northern Asia, which favored the negative phase of the Arctic oscillation. This, in turn, led to a strong Siberian high and East Asian winter monsoon. Strong cold advection related to the circulation anomalies caused an ECEs increase in northeast China and dominated the change in temperature over eastern China in early winter. By contrast, the decrease in ECEs in late winter in the last 20 years was more related to the interdecadal enhancement of the anticyclonic anomaly over the north Pacific (NPAC). The strong NPAC extended to East Asia in a zonal direction, causing strong warm anomalies in eastern China through warm advection and diabatic heating, which weakened the northerly and prevented the East Asian trough from moving south, resulting in a warmer East Asia and a uniform decrease in late winter.
