    Abstract: At present, the energy loss (EL) mechanism of intracranial aneurysm (IA) rupture is explored based on the global EL calculated by Bernoulli equation, but the details of EL are still unclear. This study aimed to explore the temporal and spatial characteristics of EL of IAs and reveal its mechanism. A novel method for calculating the EL of IAs based on dissipation function (DF) was proposed. DF was derived from the differential form of the energy equation and reflected the irreversible conversion from mechanical energy to internal energy caused by the friction between the fluid micelles. Eight sidewall IAs located at the posterior communicating segment of the internal carotid artery were collected; the three-dimensional (3D) geometric models of IAs were established employing image segmentation and 3D reconstruction. Computational fluid dynamics was applied to obtain hemodynamic parameters of IAs. The temporal and spatial characteristics of EL of IAs were achieved utilizing our proposed method. The simulation results indicated that EL occurred mainly in the boundary layer and the region adjacent to high-velocity inflow jet, EL increased rapidly during cardiac systole and reached its maximum at end-systolic phase and then decreased gradually during diastole until the end of cardiac cycle. The proposed method achieved some improvements over the traditional Bernoulli equation–based method by acquiring the temporal and spatial characteristics of EL, and it could provide insights into the EL of IAs and contribute to further rupture mechanism investigation.

    Abstract: It is of potential clinical value to improve the accuracy of Alzheimer's disease (AD) recognition using structural MRI. We proposed a reparametrized convolutional neural network (Re-CNN) to discriminate AD from NC by applying morphological metrics and deep semantic features. The deep semantic features were extracted through Re-CNN on structural MRI. Considering the high redundancy in deep semantic features, we constrained the similarity of the features and retained the most distinguishing features utilizing the reparametrized module. The Re-CNN model was trained in an end-to-end manner on structural MRI from the ADNI dataset and tested on structural MRI from the AIBL dataset. Our proposed model achieves better performance over some existing structural MRI-based AD recognition models. The experimental results show that morphological metrics along with the constrained deep semantic features can relatively improve AD recognition performance.     Abstract: A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a non-muscular communication technology that provides an information exchange channel for our brains and external devices. During the decades, BCI has made noticeable progress and has been applied in many fields. One of the most traditional BCI applications is the BCI speller. This article primarily discusses the progress of research into P300 BCI spellers and reviews four types of P300 spellers: single-modal P300 spellers, P300 spellers based on multiple brain patterns, P300 spellers with multisensory stimuli, and P300 spellers with multiple intelligent techniques. For each type of P300 speller, we further review several representative P300 spellers, including their design principles, paradigms, algorithms, experimental performance, and corresponding advantages. We particularly emphasized the paradigm design ideas, including the overall layout, individual symbol shapes and stimulus forms. Furthermore, several important issues and research guidance for the P300 speller were identified. We hope that this review can assist researchers in learning the new ideas of these novel P300 spellers and enhance their practical application capability.

    Abstract: Bacillus can help plants to acquire nutrients either directly or indirectly. However, the role of Bacillus community on the competitive growth of invasive Ambrosia artemisiifolia is poorly understood. Native Setaria viridis is often found in areas that have been invaded by A. artemisiifolia . We sought to determine whether the quantitative and/or qualitative differences in the Bacillus community present on the invasive A. artemisiifolia and native S.viridis provide a competitive advantage to the invasive over native species. A field experiment was established to imitate the invasion of A. artemisiifolia . The 16S rRNA gene was commercially sequenced to identify the bacilli isolated from the rhizosphere soil of field-grown A. artemisiifolia and S. viridis . The Bacillus communities in their rhizosphere were compared, and their effects on the competitive growth of A. artemisiifolia and S. viridis were tested in the pot experiments. Bacillus in the rhizosphere soil of A. artemisiifolia significantly enhanced its intra-specific competitive ability. The relative abundance of B. megaterium in the rhizosphere soil of A. artemisiifolia was significantly higher than that of S. viridis . Inoculation with B. megaterium that was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of both A. artemisiifolia and S. viridis significantly enhanced the relative competitiveness of A. artemisiifolia and inhibited that of S. viridis . The higher abundance of B. megaterium in the rhizosphere of A. artemisiifolia creates higher levels of available nutrients than that in the native S. viridis , which enhance the competitive growth of A. artemisiifolia . The result helps to discover the mechanism of Bacillus community in the invasion of A. artemisiifolia .

    Abstract: To investigate the changing trend of Chinese couples' marital satisfaction and its relationship with social changes. Methods A cross-temporal meta-analysis was performed on 118 original studies ( n = 31,909) reporting marital satisfaction of Chinese couples from 1994 to 2020, primarily using correlation analysis and regression analysis. Results (1) Overall, the marital satisfaction of Chinese couples showed a downward trend over time. (2) Men's marital satisfaction displayed almost no change, while women's marital satisfaction had a more obvious downward trend. (3) Changes in macrosocial factors (per capita consumption expenditure, housing prices, old-age dependency ratio, and divorce rate) could significantly predict the downward trend of marital satisfaction, especially for women. Conclusion In the past 27 years, the overall marital satisfaction level of Chinese couples has shown a downward trend, and there are gendered differences, which may be related to changes in the socioeconomic and cultural environments.

    Abstract: The rupture risk assessment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is clinically relevant. How to accurately assess the rupture risk of IAs remains a challenge in clinical decision-making. Purpose We aim to build an integrated model to improve the assessment of the rupture risk of IAs. Materials and Methods A total of 148 (39 ruptured and 109 unruptured) IA subjects were retrospectively computed with computational fluid dynamics (CFDs), and the integrated models were proposed by combining machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms. ML algorithms that include random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), XGBoost (XGB), support vector machine (SVM), and LightGBM were, respectively, adopted to classify ruptured and unruptured IAs. A Pointnet DL algorithm was applied to extract hemodynamic cloud features from the hemodynamic clouds obtained from CFD. Morphological variables and hemodynamic parameters along with the extracted hemodynamic cloud features were acted as the inputs to the classification models. The classification results with and without hemodynamic cloud features are computed and compared. Results Without consideration of hemodynamic cloud features, the classification accuracy of RF, KNN, XGB, SVM, and LightGBM was 0.824, 0.759, 0.839, 0.860, and 0.829, respectively, and the AUCs of them were 0.897, 0.584, 0.892, 0.925, and 0.890, respectively. With the consideration of hemodynamic cloud features, the accuracy successively increased to 0.908, 0.873, 0.900, 0.926, and 0.917. Meanwhile, the AUCs reached 0.952, 0.881, 0.950, 0.969, and 0.965 eventually. Adding consideration of hemodynamic cloud features, the SVM could perform best with the highest accuracy of 0.926 and AUC of 0.969, respectively. Conclusion The integrated model combining ML and DL algorithms could improve the classification of IAs. Adding consideration of hemodynamic cloud features could bring more accurate classification, and hemodynamic cloud features were important for the discrimination of ruptured IAs.

    Abstract: Sepsis is an exacerbated inflammatory reaction induced by severe infection. As important defensive molecules in innate immunity, several AMPs are reported to prevent septic shock. In this study, we characterized a novel cathelicidin, FM-CATH, from the frog skin of F. multistriata. FM-CATH was found to adopt an amphipathic α-helix structural in membrane-mimetic environments and possess favorable antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungus. In addition, it triggered the agglutination of bacteria. It could also strongly bind to LPS and LTA. Additionally, FM-CATH affected the enzymatic activities of thrombin, plasmin, β-tryptase, and tPA, leading to coagulation inhibition in vitro and in vivo . Finally, we observed that FM-CATH improved survival rate and inhibited pathological alteration, bacterial count, serum biochemistry, and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the cecal ligation and puncture-induced sepsis mice. Taken together, these findings suggest that FM-CATH might be served as a promising agent for the treatment of sepsis.

    Abstract: Attention is a complex cognitive function of human brain that plays a vital role in our daily lives. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to measure and analyze attention due to its high temporal resolution. Although several attention recognition brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been proposed, there is a scarcity of studies with a sufficient number of subjects, valid paradigms, and reliable recognition analysis across subjects. Methods In this study, we proposed a novel attention paradigm and feature fusion method to extract features, which fused time domain features, frequency domain features and nonlinear dynamics features. We then constructed an attention recognition framework for 85 subjects. Results and discussion We achieved an intra-subject average classification accuracy of 85.05% ± 6.87% and an inter-subject average classification accuracy of 81.60% ± 9.93%, respectively. We further explored the neural patterns in attention recognition, where attention states showed less activation than non-attention states in the prefrontal and occipital areas in α, β and θ bands. The research explores, for the first time, the fusion of time domain features, frequency domain features and nonlinear dynamics features for attention recognition, providing a new understanding of attention recognition.

    Abstract: The application of desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) and dried blood spot (DBS) sampling has been successfully implemented several times. However, the difficulty of combining DBS sampling with DESI-MS is still the carrier material used for the blood samples. In this study, a new, easily obtained, and cost-effective carrier substrate for dried plasma spot (DPS) sampling and DESI-MS analysis and its application in phospholipidomics studies was described. First, the effects of several carrier materials, including cellulose-based materials (31 ET paper and filter paper) and non-cellulose-based materials (PARAFILM and its shape-modified material, PTFE-printed glass slide and polyvinylidene fluoride film), were tested. Second, a method combining DPS sampling with DESI-MS for phospholipidomics analysis was established, and parameters affecting compound signal intensities, such as sample volume and sprayer solvent system, were optimized. In conclusion, the total signal intensity obtained from shape-modified PARAFILM was the strongest. The suitable plasma sample volume deposited on PARAFILM carriers was 5 μl, and acetonitrile (ACN) was recommended as the optimal spray solvent for phospholipid (PL) profiling. Repeatability (87.5% of compounds with CV & lt; 30%) and stability for data acquisition (48 h) were confirmed. Finally, the developed method was applied in phospholipidomics analysis of schistosomiasis, and a distinguished classification between control mice and infected mice was observed by using multivariate pattern recognition analysis, confirming the practical application of this new carrier material for DPS sampling and DESI-MS analysis. Compared with a previously reported method, the rapid metabolomics screening approach based on the implementation of DPS sampling coupled with the DESI-MS instrument developed in this study has increased analyte sensitivity, which may promote its further application in clinical studies.
