    Abstract: Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM), especially PM 2.5 , can induce various adverse health effects in populations, including diseases and premature death, but the mechanism of its toxicity is largely unknown. Methods Water-soluble components of PM 2.5 (WS-PM 2.5 ) were collected in the north of China in winter, and combined in two groups with the final concentrations of 94 μg/mL (C L group, AQI ≤ 100) and 119 μg/mL (C H group, 100 & lt; AQI ≤ 200), respectively. The acute and long-term toxic effects of WS-PM 2.5 samples were evaluated in several aspects such as development, lifespan, healthspan (locomotion behavior, heat stress tolerance, lipofucin). DAF mutants and genes were applied to verify the action of IIS pathway in WS-PM 2.5 induced-effects. RNA-Sequencing was performed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms, as well as ROS production and Oil red O staining were also served as means of mechanism exploration. Results Body length and lifespan were shortened by exposure to WS-PM 2.5 . Healthspan of nematodes revealed adverse effects evaluated by head thrash, body bend, pharyngeal pump, as well as intestinal lipofuscin accumulation and survival time under heat stress. The abbreviated lifespan of daf-2(e1370) strain and reduced expression level of daf-16 and hsp-16.2 indicated that IIS pathway might be involved in the mechanism. Thirty-five abnormally expressed genes screened out by RNA-Sequencing techniques, were functionally enriched in lipid/lipid metabolism and transport, and may contribute substantially to the regulation of PM 2.5 induced adverse effects in nematodes. Conclusion WS-PM 2.5 exposure induce varying degrees of toxic effects, such as body development, shorten lifespan and healthspan. The IIS pathway and lipid metabolism/transport were disturbed by WS-PM 2.5 during WS-PM 2.5 exposure, suggesting their regulatory role in lifespan determination.

    Abstract: Accurate evaluation of patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) is crucial for personalized treatment. However, misdiagnosis remains a serious issue. Neuroimaging methods could observe the conscious activity in patients who have no evidence of consciousness in behavior, and provide objective and quantitative indexes to assist doctors in their diagnosis. In the review, we discussed the current research based on the evaluation of consciousness rehabilitation after DoC using EEG, fMRI, PET, and fNIRS, as well as the advantages and limitations of each method. Nowadays single-modal neuroimaging can no longer meet the researchers` demand. Considering both spatial and temporal resolution, recent studies have attempted to focus on the multi-modal method which can enhance the capability of neuroimaging methods in the evaluation of DoC. As neuroimaging devices become wireless, integrated, and portable, multi-modal neuroimaging methods will drive new advancements in brain science research.

    Abstract: Introduction: Few studies have addressed the genetic spectrum of NPHS1 variants in Chinese children with nephrotic syndrome. In this multicenter study, the clinical manifestations and features of NPHS1 variants in Chinese children with nephrotic syndrome were researched. Method: Genotypical and phenotypical data from 30 children affected by NPHS1 variants were collected from a multicenter registration system in China and analyzed retrospectively. Results: The patients were divided into two groups: congenital nephrotic syndrome (CNS [ n = 24]) and non-CNS (early onset nephrotic syndrome [ n = 6]). Renal biopsy was performed on four patients in the non-CNS group, revealing minimal change disease in three and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in one. A total of 61 NPHS 1 variants were detected, involving 25 novel variants. The “recurrent variants” included c.928G & gt;A(p.Asp310Asn) in eight patients with CNS, followed by c.616C & gt;A(p.Pro206Thr) in four, and c.2207T & gt;C (p.Val736Ala) in three. Steroid treatment was applied in 29.2% (7/24)of the patients in the CNS group and 50% (3/6) of the patients in the non-CNS group. One patient in each group experienced complete remission but relapsed subsequently. Immunosuppressants were administered to three patients in the non-CNS group, eliciting an effective response. In the CNS group, three patients underwent renal transplantation and six died mainly from infection. Conclusion: Variants of NPHS1 cause CNS and early childhood-onset nephrotic syndrome. NPHS1 variants in Chinese individuals with nephrotic syndrome (NS) were mainly compound heterozygous variants, and c.928G & gt;A(p.Asp310Asn) in exon 8 may act as a recurrent variant in the Chinese population, followed by c.616C & gt;A(p.Pro206Thr) in exon 6. Steroids and immunosuppressants may be effective in selected patients.

In this work, the protein, lipid, carbohydrate, and other components of MFGM are discussed, and also common separation, preparation, and analysis technologies, physicochemical properties, and functional features of MFGM are reviewed, to provide some guidance for the development and utilization of MFGM.

    Abstract: Chronic smokers have abnormal spontaneous regional activity and disrupted functional connectivity as revealed by previous neuroimaging studies. Combining different dimensions of resting-state functional indicators may help us learn more about the neuropathological mechanisms of smoking. Methods The amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) of 86 male smokers and 56 male non-smokers were first calculated. Brain regions that displayed significant differences in ALFF between two groups were selected as seeds for further functional connectivity analysis. Besides, we examined correlations between brain areas with abnormal activity and smoking measurements. Results Increased ALFF in left superior frontal gyrus (SFG), left medial superior frontal gyrus (mSFG) and middle frontal gyrus (MFG) as well as decreased ALFF in right calcarine sulcus were observed in smokers compared with non-smokers. In the seed-based functional connectivity analysis, smokers showed attenuated functional connectivity with left SFG in left precuneus, left fusiform gyrus, left lingual gyrus, left cerebellum 4 5 and cerebellum 6 as well as lower functional connectivity with left mSGF in left fusiform gyrus, left lingual gyrus, left parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), left calcarine sulcus, left cerebellum 4 5, cerebellum 6 and cerebellum 8 (GRF corrected, Pvoxel & lt; 0.005, Pcluster & lt;0.05). Furthermore, attenuated functional connectivity with left mSGF in left lingual gyrus and PHG displayed a negative correlation with FTND scores ( r = −0.308, p = 0.004; r = −0.326, p = 0.002 Bonferroni corrected). Conclusion Our findings of increased ALFF in SFG with reduced functional connectivity to visual attention areas and cerebellum subregions may shed new light on the pathophysiology of smoking.

    Abstract: In order to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) for acute traumatic brain injury (TBI), we studied the potential of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and ADC-derived first-order features regarding this problem. Methods Forty-five male Sprague Dawley rats (sham group: 15, TBI group: 15, LIPUS treated: 15) were enrolled and underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Scanning layers were acquired using a multi-shot readout segmentation of long variable echo trains (RESOLVE) to decrease distortion. The ultrasound transducer was applied to the designated region in the injured cortical areas using a conical collimator and was filled with an ultrasound coupling gel. Regions of interest were manually delineated in the center of the damaged cortex on the diffusion weighted images ( b = 800 s/mm 2 ) layer by layer for the TBI and LIPUS treated groups using the open-source software ITK-SNAP. Before analysis and modeling, the features were normalized using a z-score method, and a logistic regression model with a backward filtering method was employed to perform the modeling. The entire process was completed using the R language. Results During the observation time, the ADC values ipsilateral to the trauma in the TBI and LIPUS groups increased rapidly up to 24 h. After statistical analysis, the 10th percentile, 90th percentile, mean, skewness, and uniformity demonstrated a significant difference among three groups. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis shows that the combined LR model exhibited the highest area under the curve value (AUC: 0.96). Conclusion The combined LR model of first-order features based on the ADC map can acquire a higher diagnostic performance than each feature only in evaluating the neuroprotective effect of LIPUS for TBI. Models based on first-order features may have potential value in predicting the therapeutic effect of LIPUS in clinical practice in the future.

    Abstract: Although it is generally very difficult to supplement flow energy into the tight oil reservoir, there is still good prospect for enhanced oil and gas recovery in this area due to its large proportion of hydrocarbon reserves. However, due to the sensitivity of tight oil reservoir to formation pressure, the porosity and permeability of the reservoir will change greatly with the change of formation pressure in the process oil development, which has a complex impact on dynamic analysis, productivity evaluation and later adjustment of potential stimulation measures. This study mainly focus on the characterization of tight formation rock in the Northwest part of China. In order to get a visual impression of the reservoir core, some routine tests were firstly carried out. After that, porosity and permeability are tested under overburden pressure conditions. Studies show that overburden porosity and permeability will decrease but total decrease percentage will increase with the increase of net effective overburden pressure. The decrease percentage of permeability is much higher compared with that of porosity decrease percentage under overburden pressures. When the net effective overburden pressure is larger than 10 MPa, the decrease of overburden porosity will become relatively small. At the same time, when the net effective overburden pressure is larger than 15 MPa, the decrease of overburden permeability will become relatively small. Taking the pressure-increasing process and the pressure-decreasing process as a whole: the permeability cannot recover to the initial level when overburden pressure is the same as previous round because certain permeability is permanently damaged in the process. At the same time, when the net effective overburden pressure increased to a higher level, the permeability damaged will become relatively smaller. These experiments compose of a comprehensive characterization of formation rock and are of great significance to accurately understand the reservoir damage in the process of tight oil development and reasonably evaluate the productivity of oil producers.

    Abstract: Abnormal interactions among distributed brain systems are implicated in the mechanisms of nicotine addiction. However, the relationship between the structural covariance network, a measure of brain connectivity, and smoking severity remains unclear. To fill this gap, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between structural covariance network and smoking severity in smokers. Methods A total of 101 male smokers and 51 male non-smokers were recruited, and they underwent a T1-weighted anatomical image scan. First, an individualized structural covariance network was derived via a jackknife-bias estimation procedure for each participant. Then, a data-driven machine learning method called connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) was conducted to infer smoking severity measured with Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) scores using an individualized structural covariance network. The performance of CPM was evaluated using the leave-one-out cross-validation and a permutation testing. Results As a result, CPM identified the smoking severity-related structural covariance network, as indicated by a significant correlation between predicted and actual FTND scores (r = 0.23, permutation p = 0.020). Identified networks comprised of edges mainly located between the subcortical–cerebellum network and networks including the frontoparietal default model and motor and visual networks. Discussion These results identified smoking severity-related structural covariance networks and provided a new insight into the neural underpinnings of smoking severity.

    Abstract: Short-term spinal cord stimulation (stSCS) is an effective treatment for postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). However, how exactly stSCS affects time-dynamic intrinsic brain activity in PHN patients is not clear. The purpose of this study was to examine the static and dynamic variability of neural activity in PHN patients after stSCS. Methods In this study, 10 patients with PHN underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) at baseline and after SCS. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and dynamic ALFF (dALFF) were used to investigate the static and dynamic variability of neural activity in PHN patients after stSCS. We additionally examined the associations between clinical parameters and functional changes in the brain. Results There was a significant increase in dALFF in the left precuneus and right superior parietal gyrus, and a decrease in dALFF in the left inferior temporal gyrus, right gyrus rectus, left superior temporal gyrus, right orbitofrontal cortex, and left orbitofrontal cortex. There was significantly increased ALFF in the right inferior temporal gyrus, and decreased ALFF in the right lingual gyrus, left superior parietal gyrus, right superior parietal gyrus, and left precuneus. Furthermore, Pittsburgh sleep quality index scores were positively associated with dALFF changes in the left superior temporal gyrus and left orbitofrontal cortex. Hospital anxiety and depression scale scores and continuous pain scores exhibited significant negative correlation with dALFF changes in the right superior parietal gyrus. Conclusion This study indicated that stSCS is able to cause dALFF changes in PHN patients, thus stSCS might alter brain functions to relieve pain, sleep, and mood symptoms. The findings provide new insights into the mechanisms of stSCS efficacy in the treatment of patients with PHN.
