Abstract: A study was conducted to evaluate the use of cashew nuts meal (CNM) in diets for sheep, raised in feedlot. Thirty two crossbred animals received concentrates with the same amount of crude protein, but four different levels of CNM (0, 12, 24 and 36%). A factorial 4 x 2 was used, with four levels of CNM and 2 sexes, with four repetitions. Daily weight gain and feed conversion as well as intake of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and ashes were determined by analysis of variance, Duncan statistical test and regression analysis. Intake was estimated as g/animal/day, percentage of body weight (%BW) and g/BW0.75. There were differences in intake of DM, CP and EE when animals were fed concentrates with 0 and 36% of CNM. Also, intake of DM, CP and NDF tended to decrease as the levels of CNM increased in the diet. EE intake increased according to the different CNM levels. The type of diet did not significantly affect either weight gain or feed conversion. Therefore, cashew nut meal can be included up to 24% in the concentrate, but the total diets should not have more than 6% of fat.

Abstract: Twenty crossbred male Santa Inês sheep were assigned to a completely randomized block design to evaluate the effects of feeding dried cashew pulp (DCP) on performance, digestibility of nutrients, and nitrogen balance. It was also of particular interest to study the economical viability of adding DCP to diets of feedlot sheep. Diets were isonitrogenous and contained ground Tifton 85 hay (Cynodon spp), corn, soybean meal, salt, and one of the following levels of DCP: 0, 10, 20, 30 or 40%. Increasing the dietary levels of DCP had no significant effect on intakes of DM and CP and also on feed conversion. Neutral detergent fiber intake was increased while an opposite effect was observed for weight gain by adding DCP to the diets. For average daily weight gain is recommended the inclusion of 30% of DCP in the diet because of the greatest economical return rate. Inclusion of DCP in diets of finishing feedlot sheep reduced nitrogen retention and negatively affected total tract digestibilities of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF.

Abstract: A study was conducted to evaluate the performance and the dry matter and nutrients intake in feedlot sheep fed diets with different levels of hray from tropical grasses: elephantgrass, buffelgrass, "milhã-roxa" and "urochloa"grass. Santa Inês hairy sheep (16 males and 16 females; average weight = 26,5 kg). A completely randomized design, with four replicates and two animals per experimental unit, was used. Males and females showed the same response to all treatments. Weight gain was similar for all diets, with an average of 95 g/animal/day. Dry matter and neutral detergent fiber intake were not different among all treatments. However, diets with "milhã-rôxa" hay were associated to the highest crude protein intake. It was concluded that all types of hay can be used for feedlot sheep.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate bioeconomic efficiency of F1 Dorper x Santa Inês lambs for meet production. Performance of F1 Dorper x Santa Inês lambs in raising and fattening phases was analyzed. The production phase of lambs was realized in native pastures ("caatinga") and the finishing phase was in confinement. The ewes were supplemented during the last 50 days of pregnancy and the first 30 days of lactation. Lambs were weaned at 70 days of age, divided into three lots, confined and fed elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) ad libitum, and concentrate in the proportion of 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5% of live weight, respectively. Lambs sex did not have significant influence on birth weight, as well as on weaning weight and weight gain until weaning. In production and confinement phases, lambs of single births were superior to double births ones considering these variables. Linear effect was significant for weight and for weight gain, at 30 and 50 days of confinement. The three inclusion levels of concentrate were economically viable. Gross margins of live weight for each kg of lamb produced were R$ 0.26 kg-1, R$ 0.30 kg-1 and R$ 0.36 kg-1 of live weight to concentrates of 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5%, respectively. The best economics results were obtained when the concentrate level was 3.5% of live weight.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to determine the influence of the ram in the growth traits of 303 slaughter lambs of ½ Somalis Brasileira x ½ Undefined Breed (SRD) and ½ Santa Inês x ½ SRD genetic groups. The animals were weighted each 14 days until weaning at dry season and up to 140 days of age at rainy season. The genetic group and the year of birth did not influence (P 〉 0.05) any of the analyzed traits. The month of birth influenced (P 〈 0.05) weights at birth, at 56 days of age and at weaning, and weight gain until weaning. February was the best month to birth of lambs. Single animals weighted more and gained more weight (P 〈 0.05) than those of multiple births, in all ages and studied intervals, except in the period between weaning and the age of 140 days. Males were heavier and gained more weight than females, both in the pre-weaning and in the post-weaning period. The two analyzed genetic groups are similar as to body weight and weight gains, both in the pre-weaning and in the post-weaning period.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to establish the influence of breeding ram and feeding on performance of lambs in confinement. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2x4 factorial arrangement. The treatments were two genetic groups (Santa Inês x not defined breed (NDB) and Somalis x NDB) and concentrate (corn, soybean meal plus mineral salt) at 15%, 30%, 45% and 60%. Thirty two animals were confined in individual stalls and each was one repetition. The diets were composed by concentrate and roughage, leucaena hay (Leucaena leucocephala), as a complete ration. The slaughter weight increased and the feed efficiency improved (P 〈 0.05) as concentrate in diet was increased. A quadratic effect on dry matter intake and organic matter intake with maximum values of 35.29% and 35.36%, respectively, was observed. All estimated gross margin were positive. There was no difference (P 〉 0.05) among concentrates; however, the genetic group Somalis x NDB was superior (P 〈 0.05) to Santa Inês x NDB.

Abstract: This work was carried out for evaluating in vivo digestibility of nutrients from FM 86 and FM SM cultivars of mulberry at two growth ages, 45 and 90 days. Eight Saanen male goats being six month-old and 26kg of live weight were used. Experimental design was completely randomized factorial 2 x 2 (two mulberry cultivars and two growth ages). The NDF digestibility coefficient of FM 86 cultivar (74.82%) was higher than the FM SM (69.36%) and there was not statiscal difference between their growth ages. In relation to ADF digestibility coefficient, there was significant interaction between cultivars and growth ages. FM 86 cultivar with 45 day-old showed ADF digestibility coefficient higher (75.09%) than that with 90 day-old (68.82%). Considering NDT and energy, DM and CP digestibility coefficients, it was observed the superiority of plants with 45 day-old, independently of the cultivar. It was concluded that FM 86 and FM SM cultivars showed great energetic values and high DM, CP and cellular wall constituents digestibility coefficients which indicated the elevated power of mulberry for using as forage in goat nutrition.

Avaliou o pH e N-NH3 amoniacal do líquido ruminal e a ureia do sangue.

Abstract: This trial was conducted with the objective of evaluating the nutritive value of the silage of elephantgrass by the addition of 0, 12, 24, 36 and 48% of cashew bagasse (by-product of the cashew juice agro-industry). A completely randomized design with four replicates was used. After 82 days, the silos were opened and samples were collected for determination of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicellulose (HEM), pH and levels of N-NH3 of the silage. The addition of the cashew bagasse (BC) decreased the pH and N-NH3 values and increased the PB grade of the silage. The level of ADF and HEM did not change in function of different additions. It was concluded that the cashew bagasse improves the nutritive value of the silage and provides better conservation of silage.
