Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To analyze gross, fine and global motor performance and its correlation with neonatal and familial variables and day care exposure among children between 12-24 months of age attending public day care centers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated 40 infants (mean age 14.3±2.4 months) attending public day care centers. The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III test was used to assess motor performance and to allow comparison between gross and fine domains of motor development. Neonatal, familial and day care center exposure data were collected and correlated with motor performance. Paired t-tests for mean comparisons and Pearson correlation were used. RESULTS: Motor performance of the studied group was below the average mean. The prevalence of suspected delays in gross and global motor performance was 22.5%, in contrast to none in fine motor performance. There was a significant difference between fine and gross motor performance, with the latter displaying lower scores; 35% of the group showed significant discrepancies between these areas. No correlation was found between the motor categories, neonatal and familial characteristics, and day care center exposure variables. CONCLUSIONS: The infants' global motor development fell below the average mean, with a delay in gross motor development and a relevant discrepancy between motor domains. This study suggests that attention should be given to gross motor skills and opportunities for exploration the environment in day care centers, especially during the first two years of life.

Abstract: The aim of study was to compare typically-developing children and children with Down syndrome (DS) for their fine motor performance, measured by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development - Third Edition (BSITD-III), and for their functional performance in self-care, measured by the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). Associations between these areas were also investigated. Twelve typically-developing children and 12 children with DS were assessed at the age of 2 years. The children with DS performed poorly in fine motor skills when compared with typical children, which may be explained by the complex motor skills involved in the BSITD-III's tasks. Their self-care scores were also lower in comparison with the typical children. However, these scores fell under the average performance for children without disabilities, which may be explained by the low complexity, in terms of fine motor skills, of functional tasks expected for children at that age (eg.: taking shoes/pants off). This finding has probably contributed to the lack of correlation between the areas. Factors such as the assistance provided by the caregivers, and environmental stimulation, may also have contributed to the results.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze the emergence of the child labor problem in tobacco growing in Agudo (Rio Grande do Sul state), triggered by the promulgation of Act 6.481/2008, which addresses the worst child labor conditions. The methodological procedures used were the literature review, desk research and a case study, conducted in the municipality of Agudo. In the case study, we have tried to obtain quantitative and qualitative data through questionnaires and open interviews directed to 27 tobacco growers, and with teenagers and children under 18 years old. The survey results indicate the existence of a clash between different conceptions of child labor in small scale family farmers. The legal devices, the commitment terms and the tobacco supply chain contracts forbid child labor below the age of 18 based on international agreements and regulations which guarantee childhood development. From the perspective of the families, child labor is understood as "help" and a way of socialization and training of the inheritor. Therefore, parents do not agree that child labor is a perverse form of labor exploitation of their children.

Abstract: Abstract There is currently a noticeable increase in independent initiatives for the implementation of non-potable water systems in residential buildings. These initiatives count on little technical support, regulatory guidelines or legislation to guide designers, builders and managers on the appropriate practices of implementation, operation and maintenance of these systems, which can put at risk both the health of users and the success of this technology. Considering that it is essential to meet the needs of users, adapting solutions to use, evaluation during operation (EDO) is a suitable tool for the analysis of the system's current situation. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the performance of buildings' non-potable water systems during their operation in residential buildings, with regard to design, implementation, operation and maintenance. The EDO method was applied in six residential buildings. The results show that lack of technical training, specific technical requirements and laws to guide designers, builders, managers and users contributes to the current scenario, characterized by systems that operate with less than adequate performance to meet the needs of users and ensure their safety.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to report the results of evaluation of the Syllabus Pedagogical Project, implemented in the beginning of 2008, in undergraduate programs at Universidade Sagrado Coração (USC), located in Bauru, State of São Paulo. With this intent, a sample of the performance of first year USC Pedagogy, History, Architecture and Urban Design and Computer Science students, who used the Syllabus methodology for one year, was analyzed. The analysis referred to questions of general training of ENADE/2008. The analyzed data apply to the comparison of USC students performance with that of students of the same programs at other institutions, like Colleges or Universities, located in Bauru or around it, and also with the average of students of these programs in Brazil. It also analyzed the results of an internal assessment done by the University in 2009 about the implementation of this new methodology of teaching and learning. With respect to performance issues of ENADE/2008, it has been observed that the best results were obtained by students of USC. Moreover, the students of Pedagogy and History, who performed best in ENADE/2008, among the programs evaluated, were those who indicated in the evaluation of the methodology, the highest level of participation in reading and Prior Activities recommended by teachers. The results suggest that the Syllabus methodology has made a positive impact on students' learning.
