    Description: The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017 (IDP2017) is the second publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2016. The IDP2017 includes data from the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian oceans, with about twice the data volume of the previous IDP2014. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains data for a large suite of biogeochemical parameters as well as aerosol and rain data characterising atmospheric trace element and isotope (TEI) sources. The TEI data in the IDP2017 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at crossover stations. The IDP2017 consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 450 TEIs as well as standard hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing an on-line atlas that includes more than 590 section plots and 130 animated 3D scenes. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. Users can download the full data packages or make their own custom selections with a new on-line data extraction service. In addition to the actual data values, the IDP2017 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering and for statistical analysis. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2017 as section plots and rotating 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes combine data from many cruises and provide quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. These 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of tracer plumes near ocean margins or along ridges. The IDP2017 is the result of a truly international effort involving 326 researchers from 22 countries. This publication provides the critical reference for unpublished data, as well as for studies that make use of a large cross-section of data from the IDP2017.

    Description: The water masses passing the Fram Strait are mainly responsible for the exchange of heat and freshwater between the Nordic Seas and the Arctic Ocean (the Arctic Mediterranean, AM). Disentangling their exact sources, distribution and mixing, however, is complex. This work provides new insights based on a detailed geochemical tracer inventory including dissolved Nd isotope (εNd), rare earth element (REE) and stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) data along a full water depth section across Fram Strait. We find that Nd isotope and REE distributions in the open AM primarily reflect lateral advection of water masses and their mixing. Seawater-particle interactions exert important control only above the shelf regions, as observed above the NE Greenland Shelf. Advection of northward flowing warm Atlantic Water (AW) is clearly reflected by an εNd signature of -11.7 and a Nd concentration ([Nd]) of 16 pmol/kg in the upper ∼500 m of the eastern and central Fram Strait. Freshening and cooling of the AW on its way trough the AM are accompanied by a continuous change towards more radiogenic εNd signatures (e.g. -10.4 of dense Arctic Atlantic Water). This mainly reflects mixing with intermediate waters but also admixture of dense Kara Sea waters and Pacific-derived waters. The more radiogenic εNd signatures of the intermediate and deep waters (reaching -9.5) are mainly acquired in the SW Nordic Seas through exchange with basaltic formations of Iceland and SE Greenland. Inputs of Nd from Svalbard are not observed and surface waters and Nd on the Svalbard shelf originate from the Barents Sea. Shallow southward flowing Arctic-derived waters (〈 200 m) form the core of the East Greenland Current above the Greenland slope and can be traced by their relatively radiogenic εNd (reaching -8.8) and elevated [Nd] (21 to 29 pmol/kg). These properties are used together with δ18O and standard hydrographic tracers to define the proportions of Pacific-derived (〈 ∼30 % based on Nd isotopes) and Atlantic-derived waters, as well as of river waters (〈 ∼8 %). Shallow waters (〈 150 m) on the NE Greenland Shelf share some characteristics of Arctic-derived waters, but exhibit less radiogenic εNd values (reaching -12.4) and higher [Nd] (up to 38 pmol/kg) in the upper ∼100 m. This suggests local addition of Greenland freshwater of up to ∼6 %. In addition to these observations, this study shows that the pronounced gradients in εNd signatures and REE characteristics in the upper water column provide a reliable basis for assessments of shallow hydrological changes within the AM.

    Description: Highlights • Nd isotope data reflect advection and dilution of Mediterranean Outflow Water on its way north in the Bay of Biscay. • Combined Hf and Nd isotopes are a sensitive indicator of inputs from land as well as long distance advection and mixing. • Nd isotope results of this and earlier studies demonstrate the temporally variable flow path of Mediterranean Sea Water. We present dissolved neodymium and hafnium concentrations and isotope compositions of surface and deep-water masses from the Bay of Biscay. Neodymium isotope signatures in surface waters of the Bay of Biscay are mostly dominated by local weathering inputs from the surrounding continental margin. Subsurface Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) shows a distinct Nd isotope signature (εNd ≅ −12) at the southwestern-most station and is significantly diluted by mixing with more radiogenic waters or shifted by inputs of relatively radiogenic particulate Nd on its way north along the European margin. Furthermore, the Nd isotope data clearly show a declining fraction of Mediterranean Sea Water (MSW) at intermediate depths on its way north indicating that only 40% to 60% of MSW still present in the mixture at the Galician margin arrive at the stations further north in the Bay of Biscay. An interannual variability of the flow path of MSW is identified when comparing the results of the Nd isotope compositions and salinity data of this study with those of earlier studies from the area. In agreement with Nd isotope and concentration analyses the Hf isotope composition of MSW is set by large-scale inputs of terrigenous material into the Mediterranean as can be deduced from elevated Hf concentrations still observable at the Galician margin. Hf isotope signatures of all water masses of the Bay of Biscay, moreover, are overprinted by local weathering inputs and do not reflect water mass mixing. However, combined dissolved Nd and Hf isotopes serve as indicators of local weathering influences on signatures expected from long distance water mass mixing.

    Description: Highlights • Icelandic input of radiogenic Nd essentially limited to coastal waters • Offshore bottom water Nd isotope signatures consistent with conservative mixing of intermediate and deep water masses • Decreased bottom water Nd concentrations likely reflect removal by particle scavenging Radiogenic neodymium (Nd) isotopes have been widely used as a proxy for tracing present and past water masses and ocean circulation, yet relatively few data exist for seawater from the important deep water formation area around Iceland. We have analyzed the dissolved seawater Nd isotope compositions (expressed as ƐNd) of 71 seawater samples, as well as Nd concentrations [Nd] of 38 seawater samples, collected at full water column profiles from 18 stations in the shelf area off the southern coast of Iceland. The goal of this work was to determine to what extent weathering inputs from Icelandic basalts, which are characterized by a distinctly radiogenic ƐNd signature within the North Atlantic, contribute to the Nd isotope and concentration signatures of water masses in the northern Iceland Basin. Radiogenic ƐNd values of up to −3.5 and elevated concentrations of up to 21 pmol/kg compared to nearby open ocean sites were found in surface waters at shallow sites closest to shore and to river mouths of Iceland. This documents partial dissolution of highly radiogenic basaltic particles, which are transported northwards by the coastal currents. A comparable signal is not observed, however, in offshore surface waters likely as a result of the advection of surface currents mainly directed onshore, thus isolating these sites from Icelandic weathering contributions. The dominance of Subpolar Mode Waters and Intermediate Water unaffected by Icelandic contributions in the offshore study area is supported by unradiogenic ƐNd signatures between −15 and −12. In agreement with hydrographic data, highly radiogenic bottom waters at one site on the Iceland-Faroe Ridge (ƐNd = −7.5) reveal the presence of almost pure Iceland Scotland Overflow Water (ISOW) near its formation site further to the east. In bottom waters of all deeper offshore sites, the combination of depleted Nd concentrations and similar ƐNd values (averaging at ≃−11.75 for the R/V Poseidon data and ≃−11 for the R/V Thalassa data) confirms the rapid entrainment of Atlantic mid-depth and deep waters into the overflow waters, which is accompanied by near bottom Nd removal via particle scavenging. Overall, our findings demonstrate that at present, apart from the radiogenic isotope signature of ISOW itself, the direct contribution of radiogenic Nd originating from weathering of Iceland basalts to the water column of the Iceland Basin is limited. This supports the reliable application of ƐNd values to trace changes in the mixing of open North Atlantic water masses (including ISOW).

    Description: Dissolved neodymium (Nd) and its radiogenic isotope composition (143Nd/144Nd, expressed as εNd) belong to the key parameters of the international GEOTRACES program, which aims to investigate the processes controlling the distribution of trace elements and their isotopes in the global ocean. We present Nd isotope and concentration ([Nd]) data from eleven full depth water column profiles from the eastern (sub)tropical Atlantic Ocean between 2°N and 29°N and from the Romanche Fracture Zone sampled during Meteor cruise M81/1 (GEOTRACES cruise GA11) in February/March 2010. The εNd signatures range from −12.9 in upper North Atlantic Deep Water (UNADW) at the equator to −8.1 in the mixed layer near the Canary Islands. Nd concentrations range from 11.9 pmol/kg observed within the Equatorial Undercurrent to 40.2 pmol/kg in Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) in the Romanche Fracture Zone. Large variations in surface water Nd isotope compositions (−12.7 ≤ εNd ≤ −8.1) and concentrations (15.7 pmol/kg ≤ [Nd] ≤ 27.7 pmol/kg) are caused by partial dissolution of Saharan dust particles between 2°N and 13°N and volcanic island weathering (Canaries) between 25°N and 29°N. In contrast to dust inputs, which predominantly affect the Nd concentrations and isotope compositions of surface waters and underlying South Atlantic Central Water (SACW), contributions originating from the Canary Islands affect the Nd isotope composition of the entire surrounding water column without significantly altering Nd concentrations, thus confirming the concept of boundary exchange in its strictest sense. The results confirm that the composition of lower North Atlantic Deep Water (LNADW, εNd = −12.1) in the abyssal plains of the eastern North Atlantic is exclusively set by the mixing ratio of LNADW and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). Upper North Atlantic Deep Water (UNADW), in contrast, is characterized by εNd signatures between −12.7 and − 12.0 between 2°N and 10°N, whereas further north it is clearly affected by admixture of Mediterranean Water (MW) and radiogenic inputs from the Canary Islands and likely also the Cape Verde Islands.
