Description: The Qinling orogenic belt and surrounding areas are a junction zone in Central China that connects the North China craton, Yangtze craton and northeastern Tibetan plateau. This area is in a key position within the more general framework where there is eastward extrusion of the Tibetan plateau and westward subduction of the Pacific plate. There is an ongoing scientific debate on how these two main processes are driving the geodynamic evolution of the Qinling orogenic belt and surrounding areas. Specific mechanisms have been proposed, such as lower crustal flow, crustal shortening and big mantle wedge tectonics. Knowledge of the seismic velocity structure helps us understand how these two driving forces affect the tectonic blocks of the study area, as well as test how well the proposed mechanisms to fit the regional velocity structure. For this purpose, a high-resolution P-wave velocity model of the crust and uppermost mantle was obtained by inverting arrival times from local earthquakes that occurred in the Qinling and surrounding region. Our three-dimensional (3D) model suggests that crustal channel flow cannot exist in the whole Qinling orogenic belt, and the localized low-velocity zone generated by the horizontal compressive stress caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, is a possible explanation for the growth of the northeastern Tibetan plateau. The contrast in seismic velocities found under the east-Qinling and the west-Qinling orogenic belts implies a different response of these two terranes to the eastward extrusion of the Tibetan plateau. Our velocity model points to relatively stable structural features in the east-Qinling and the Weihe graben, while a low-velocity anomaly in the uppermost mantle of the southernmost Ordos plateau suggests that the lithosphere of the southern Ordos plateau is undergoing destruction.

Description: A delay-dependent robust fuzzy control approach is developed for a class of nonlinear uncertain interconnected time delay large systems in this paper. First, an equivalent T–S fuzzy model is extended in order to accurately represent nonlinear dynamics of the large system. Then, a decentralized state feedback robust controller is proposed to guarantee system stabilization with a prescribed H∞ disturbance attenuation level. Furthermore, taking into account the time delays in large system, based on a less conservative delay-dependent Lyapunov function approach combining with linear matrix inequalities (LMI) technique, some sufficient conditions for the existence of H∞ robust controller are presented in terms of LMI dependent on the upper bound of time delays. The upper bound of time-delay and minimized H∞ performance index can be obtained by using convex optimization such that the system can be stabilized and for all time delays whose sizes are not larger than the bound. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated through simulation example.

Description: By M-matrix theory, inequality techniques, and Lyapunov functional method, certain sufficient conditions are obtained to ensure the existence, uniqueness, and global exponential stability of periodic solution for a new type of high-order BAM neural networks with continuously distributed delays and impulses. These novel conditions extend and improve some previously known results in the literature. Finally, an illustrative example and its numerical simulation are given to show the feasibility and correctness of the derived criteria.

Description: In Sweden, the dam-safety guidelines call for an overhaul of many existing bottom outlets. During the opening of an outlet gate, understanding the transient air-water flow is essential for its safe operation, especially under submerged tailwater conditions. Three-dimensional CFD simulations are undertaken to examine air-water flow behaviors at both free and submerged outflows. The gate, hoisted by wire ropes and powered by AC, opens at a constant speed. A mesh is adapted to follow the gate movement. At the free outflow, the CFD simulations and model tests agree well in terms of outlet discharge capacity. Larger air vents lead to more air supply; the increment becomes, however, limited if the vent area is larger than 10 m2. At the submerged outflow, a hydraulic jump builds up in the conduit when the gate reaches approximately 45% of its full opening. The discharge is affected by the tailwater and slightly by the flow with the hydraulic jump. The flow features strong turbulent mixing of air and water, with build-up and break-up of air pockets and collisions of defragmented water bodies. The air demand rate is several times as much as required by steady-state hydraulic jump with free surface.
