Abstract: The article informs readers of the monothematic issue of Geografie journal devoted to the 150th anniversary of geography at Charles University in Prague about historical roots of geography at Prague University in the context of its development in Czechia during the last 150 years. The aim of the contribution is not to assess either the history of geographical thinking or the latest history of geography, but to present above all the development of personal and institutional backing of scientific and pedagogical activities in Czech geography. When assessing this development, the authors take account of the fact that Czech geography, as a discipline of science at Charles University, was developing in relatively frequently changing and sensibly different constitutional and political systems, socio-economical and socio-cultural conditions and also in different geopolitical situations and links of the Czech state. Besides external conditions that have been determining the changes of geography, the authors stress also the role of internal (subjective) factors - existence of key personalities of the discipline (fathers founders), their capacity to get recognition in the international context and to form their continuators.

Abstract: This article addresses the analysis of theoretical and methodological concepts of the quality of human and social capital and their relation to the theory of spatial polarisation. Selected conditions for the development of human and social capital and their territorial differentiation in Czechia are evaluated. On the basis of an evaluation of component indicators of human capital (the ratio of university educated residents in the population over 15 years of age as well as an economic burden index) and social capital (voter participation in municipal elections and the number of candidates divided by the number of offices to be filled in the 2006 municipal elections) problematic areas are identified at a micro-regional level (the network of municipalities having a certified municipal authority).

Abstract: Since 1980s, we can observe a changing paradigm within the approaches towards regions which understand and deconstruct the “region” as a social process. Instead of understanding the region as an object or a category, this change transforms the region into a subject of interest for scholars. The study of regions is from now on considered a research topic which requires a holistic understanding of geography, broad interdisciplinary approaches as well as local and historical sensitivity. The paper is using a conceptual understanding of a region based on the combination of territorial, symbolic and institutional configurations. Regional identity that permeates through all of these layers is viewed as one of the most important elements of the very existence of the region and its recognition in the regional system. This paper contributes to the discussion on the importance of regional identity in regional development. The case study of the Bohemian Paradise region proves the significant influence of landscape features on the process of regional identity reproduction.

Abstract: This article seeks to contribute to discussion concerning the concept of countryside in geographical sciences. In the first section it discusses selected approaches for assessing rural areas and presents key stimulants from the new regional and cultural geography (rural areas as a socio-spatial process and as living space). The second section presents examples of empirical findings from a field survey, the respondents to which were mayors of rural municipalities – with up to 3,000 inhabitants – in Czechia. We empirically explore the truthfulness of a thesis concerning the existence of several distinct types of rural areas in Czechia: rural areas with differing development potential and diverse problems, calling for the use of different instruments in overcoming the problems in question. The results of the survey make it possible to assess the territorial differences of so-called soft factors of ruralmunicipality development (perceptions regarding rural areas, inhabitants’ relationship to the territory of their municipality, local pride, the conditions and indicators of a successful municipality).

Abstract: The article deals with alternative possibilities of delimitation of border territories in Czechia from historical-geographical and cultural-geographical points of view and with the indispensable usage of historical analysis of territory in geographical analysis of territory. An attention is paid to suggestions of a possible orientation of regional geographical research and to spatial variability of Czech borderland in time. The conclusion outlines the typology of the borderland from the point of view of its inner differentiation of the functional-spatial dynamism and social-spatial transformations during the last 150 years.

Abstract: Among consequences of the new regional geography, marginality is not perceived as only the economic phenomenon. This article focuses on the socio-cultural dimension of marginality, using the concept of regional identity in a periphery, specifically in Sušice near Czechia’s borderlands. This means that both the consciousness of inhabitants in the region as well as the identity of the region itself are explored. Elements and processes involved in the formation of regional identity are discussed as a consequence of the regional development of the peripheral borderlands. The concept of regional identity seems to be crucial to any endogenous regional development strategy and can be successfully used in regional planning and territorial marketing as well as tourism management. In particular, any unique traits in peripheries, at the local or regional level, provide resources for future development amidst the generally limited development potential of peripheries and their communities. The article indicates that inhabitants can perceive the spatial determination of the model periphery. In contrast, certain non-marginal aspects of the region are also recognized by the local community. These non-marginal parameters form the essential elements of the local community’s regional identity and, according to public opinion, present opportunities for tourism development.

Abstract: This article explores regional differences in the social capital of peripheral areas in Czechia. Its objective is to make a general contribution to studies of social and human capital and to the clarification of the role of such capital in the polarisation of space. Specifically, the article builds on previous quantitative analyses of differences in human and social capital in Czechia by presenting analyses of selected results from an extensive empirical study, carried out in typologically different peripheral micro-regions in Czechia. Emphasis is given to an analysis of problems concerning residents’ level of participation in groups, according to a given region’s scale-level, residents’ trust in selected subjects (individuals, entities and institutions) and the overall satisfaction of residents with life in a given municipality. In terms of territorial differentiation, attention is focused on an analysis of differences in the quality of social capital in Czechia’s inner and external peripheries, in other words, in areas of continuous settlement and in border regions that were settled after the removal of the German speaking population.

Abstract: The article makes a survey of aspects for evaluation of a periphery in geographic sciences. The definition of the terms "periphery" and "marginality" is discussed. An attention is paid to evaluation aspects and types of polarities defining peripheries. A periphery is understood as a consequence of an asymmetry in organization of a territory, a society, etc. The article takes into account the development of the relation core/centre - periphery and, in their delimitation, differentiates the objective and the subjective viewpoints. Determining factors and actors' behaviour in the framework of the development of peripheries, or their individual types, are observed.

Abstract: The article examines the effects of the social networks of a range of actors on the local development of municipalities located in Czech peripheral border regions. Its main goals are to shed light on and understand the role of social interactions in the development activities of individual municipalities in border-region peripheries and reveal the spatial differentiation of these municipalities. The borderland Cheb district (western Bohemia) is affected by the shrinkage process, and the concept of institutional thickness is used as the explanatory framework. One of the key conclusions is that the more disadvantages there are, the more important institutional thickness is as a development factor. The research data are drawn from 24 semi-structured interviews with the mayors of municipalities that within the system of state administration are municipalities without extended powers. The research also confirmed the diversity of individuals holding the position of mayor and the differences in the specific role mayors play in local development, as well as how important it is for municipalities to be active in microregional associations. It also showed that the internal differentiation of development opportunities and the formation of formal and informal ties are also determined by the quality of horizontal and vertical cooperation.

Abstract: The study should further discussion concerning the problems of military areas, as a type of periphery with strong natural potential. The primary goal is to analyze the impacts of recently presented concepts for utilising the Boletice Military Area, with regard to the Natura 2000 network and sites. The study defines the region’s degree of marginality by using statistical methods and an aggregate index. A central part of the study contains an analysis of a field survey of the behaviour and expectations of local and regional stakeholders, as well as the results of observations from a higher hierarchical level. All findings are then used to develop a broad-based conception of sustainable tourism and regional development for such a unique area.
